At Google Cloud Next 2025, Google Cloud Vice President of Applied AI Duncan Lennox sits down with Bob Evans in part three of our series "Google Cloud and the AI Revolution." They discuss how Google Cloud is redefining enterprise applications through purpose-built AI agents, the shift from incremental to transformational innovation, and how businesses can harness agentic AI to deliver seamless, end-to-end customer experiences at scale.Google Cloud's Agentic RevolutionThe Big Themes:Beyond Infrastructure to Applied AI: Historically, Google Cloud was associated with infrastructure, data analytics, databases, and backend technologies. However, it's now undergoing a transformation, stepping boldly into the realm of applied AI. Rather than just competing with established players in enterprise applications (like ERP, HCM, or CRM), Google Cloud is innovating at a more foundational level by creating entirely new types of agents and applications. The Customer Engagement Suite, A CRM Rethink: Google Cloud's Customer Engagement Suite isn't just an upgrade to traditional contact center software — it's a full reimagining of how businesses engage with customers. Historically, customer service was seen as a cost center: something to be optimized for efficiency and minimized wherever possible. Google Cloud flips that on its head. With the Customer Engagement Suite, the focus shifts toward creating differentiated, high-quality customer experiences that build brand loyalty, satisfaction, and even new revenue streams.Best Adoption Practices: Lennox discusses several best practices for companies looking to succeed with applied AI. First, start somewhere tangible — don't try to "boil the ocean." Select a high-visibility area where AI can solve real problems and produce measurable results. Second, tie your efforts directly to business outcomes, such as customer experience improvements, revenue growth, or operational savings. Third, choose a strategic partner capable of evolving with you as the technology advances. The Big Quote: "Experimentation is great, of course, but what I see more and more as I talk to C-level executives is they now want to be able to deliver ROI, and you have to make some bets. You've got to choose some areas. For us in applied AI, Customer Engagement Suite has been a great one, because it's a problem that C-level execs can understand."Learn More:Check out details about Customer Engagement Suite, and follow Duncan Lennox on LinkedIn.

Always up for a challenge and networking with others, she was able to get outside her comfort zone to become a real estate agent. Embracing Adversity Jaynie shares her experience of when her mother developed dementia and how it helped her embrace a new perspective of change. Things happened unexpectedly, and there's nothing you can do about it besides adapting and keeping going. Reflecting on this experience allowed her to learn how to handle tough situations professionally and get through them. Katie shares another personal experience of her struggles with infertility. You expect it would be easy to enter motherhood, but for her, it was a ten-year struggle. This showed her you always have to put one foot forward and never give up, no matter how challenging the situation is. Embracing AI technology has not always been easy for Jan, and it was even harder having to help train her team. However, by surrounding herself with other leaders, she was able to embrace the change and help her team out. In this video, two hospital managers present an extended and intriguing view of major design changes that bring in state-of-the-art technology making sure that it "fades into the background" while clinical care takes the focus. Kara Tomlinson is Executive Director of System Care Delivery and Innovation and Ron Carson is Executive Director of Enterprise Applications at Nebraska Medicine. They have not let the age of their building—more than 50 years old—or the presence of legacy technologies keep them from dreaming big and "redefining what the hospital of the future means." One major example is replacing the dry erase board that is the focus of so many wards with a digital board from eVideon called Vibe Health. Although easy to use, the old boards limited efficiency and accuracy, were prone to human error, and—most important—weren't integrate with other systems. Ready for more ideas about UX for AI and LLM applications in enterprise environments? In part 2 of my topic on UX considerations for LLMs, I explore how an LLM might be used for a fictitious use case at an insurance company—specifically, to help internal tools teams to get rapid access to primary qualitative user research. (Yes, it's a little “meta”, and I'm also trying to nudge you with this hypothetical example—no secret!) ;-) My goal with these episodes is to share questions you might want to ask yourself such that any use of an LLM is actually contributing to a positive UX outcome Join me as I cover the implications for design, the importance of foundational data quality, the balance between creative inspiration and factual accuracy, and the never-ending discussion of how we might handle hallucinations and errors posing as “facts”—all with a UX angle. At the end, I also share a personal story where I used an LLM to help me do some shopping for my favorite product: TRIP INSURANCE! (NOT!) Highlights/ Skip to: (1:05) I introduce a hypothetical internal LLM tool and what the goal of the tool is for the team who would use it (5:31) Improving access to primary research findings for better UX (10:19) What “quality data” means in a UX context (12:18) When LLM accuracy maybe doesn't matter as much (14:03) How AI and LLMs are opening the door for fresh visioning work (15:38) Brian's overall take on LLMs inside enterprise software as of right now (18:56) Final thoughts on UX design for LLMs, particularly in the enterprise (20:25) My inspiration for these 2 episodes—and how I had to use ChatGPT to help me complete a purchase on a website that could have integrated this capability right into their website Quotes from Today's Episode “If we accept that the goal of most product and user experience research is to accelerate the production of quality services, products, and experiences, the question is whether or not using an LLM for these types of questions is moving the needle in that direction at all. And secondly, are the potential downsides like hallucinations and occasional fabricated findings, is that all worth it? So, this is a design for AI problem.” - Brian T. O'Neill (8:09) “What's in our data? Can the right people change it when the LLM is wrong? The data product managers and AI leaders reading this or listening know that the not-so-secret path to the best AI is in the foundational data that the models are trained on. But what does the word *quality* mean from a product standpoint and a risk reduction one, as seen from an end-users' perspective? Somebody who's trying to get work done? This is a different type of quality measurement.” - Brian T. O'Neill (10:40) “When we think about fact retrieval use cases in particular, how easily can product teams—internal or otherwise—and end-users understand the confidence of responses? When responses are wrong, how easily, if at all, can users and product teams update the model's responses? Errors in large language models may be a significant design consideration when we design probabilistic solutions, and we no longer control what exactly our products and software are going to show to users. If bad UX can include leading people down the wrong path unknowingly, then AI is kind of like the team on the other side of the tug of war that we're playing.” - Brian T. O'Neill (11:22) “As somebody who writes a lot for my consulting business, and composes music in another, one of the hardest parts for creators can be the zero-to-one problem of getting started—the blank page—and this is a place where I think LLMs have great potential. But it also means we need to do the proper research to understand our audience, and when or where they're doing truly generative or creative work—such that we can take a generative UX to the next level that goes beyond delivering banal and obviously derivative content.” - Brian T. O'Neill (13:31) “One thing I actually like about the hype, investment, and excitement around GenAI and LLMs in the enterprise is that there is an opportunity for organizations here to do some fresh visioning work. And this is a place that designers and user experience professionals can help data teams as we bring design into the AI space.” - Brian T. O'Neill (14:04) “If there was ever a time to do some new visioning work, I think now is one of those times. However, we need highly skilled design leaders to help facilitate this in order for this to be effective. Part of that skill is knowing who to include in exercises like this, and my perspective, one of those people, for sure, should be somebody who understands the data science side as well, not just the engineering perspective. And as I posited in my seminar that I teach, the AI and analytical data product teams probably need a fourth member. It's a quartet and not a trio. And that quartet includes a data expert, as well as that engineering lead.” - Brian T. O'Neill (14:38) Links Perplexity.ai: https://perplexity.ai Ideaflow: https://www.amazon.com/Ideaflow-Only-Business-Metric-Matters/dp/0593420586 My article that inspired this episode
Let's talk about design for AI (which more and more, I'm agreeing means GenAI to those outside the data space). The hype around GenAI and LLMs—particularly as it relates to dropping these in as features into a software application or product—seems to me, at this time, to largely be driven by FOMO rather than real value. In this “part 1” episode, I look at the importance of solid user experience design and outcome-oriented thinking when deploying LLMs into enterprise products. Challenges with immature AI UIs, the role of context, the constant game of understanding what accuracy means (and how much this matters), and the potential impact on human workers are also examined. Through a hypothetical scenario, I illustrate the complexities of using LLMs in practical applications, stressing the need for careful consideration of benchmarks and the acceptance of GenAI's risks. I also want to note that LLMs are a very immature space in terms of UI/UX design—even if the foundation models continue to mature at a rapid pace. As such, this episode is more about the questions and mindset I would be considering when integrating LLMs into enterprise software more than a suggestion of “best practices.” Highlights/ Skip to: (1:15) Currently, many LLM feature initiatives seem to mostly driven by FOMO (2:45) UX Considerations for LLM-enhanced enterprise applications (5:14) Challenges with LLM UIs / user interfaces (7:24) Measuring improvement in UX outcomes with LLMs (10:36) Accuracy in LLMs and its relevance in enterprise software (11:28) Illustrating key consideration for implementing an LLM-based feature (19:00) Leadership and context in AI deployment (19:27) Determining UX benchmarks for using LLMs (20:14) The dynamic nature of LLM hallucinations and how we design for the unknown (21:16) Closing thoughts on Part 1 of designing for AI and LLMs Quotes from Today's Episode “While many product teams continue to race to deploy some sort of GenAI and especially LLMs into their products—particularly this is in the tech sector for commercial software companies—the general sense I'm getting is that this is still more about FOMO than anything else.” - Brian T. O'Neill (2:07) “No matter what the technology is, a good user experience design foundation starts with not doing any harm, and hopefully going beyond usable to be delightful. And adding LLM capabilities into a solution is really no different. So, we still need to have outcome-oriented thinking on both our product and design teams when deploying LLM capabilities into a solution. This is a cornerstone of good product work.” - Brian T. O'Neill (3:03) “So, challenges with LLM UIs and UXs, right, user interfaces and experiences, the most obvious challenge to me right now with large language model interfaces is that while we've given users tremendous flexibility in the form of a Google search-like interface, we've also in many cases, limited the UX of these interactions to a text conversation with a machine. We're back to the CLI in some ways.” - Brian T. O'Neill (5:14) “Before and after we insert an LLM into a user's workflow, we need to know what an improvement in their life or work actually means.”- Brian T. O'Neill (7:24) "If it would take the machine a few seconds to process a result versus what might take a day for a worker, what's the role and purpose of that worker going forward? I think these are all considerations that need to be made, particularly if you're concerned about adoption, which a lot of data product leaders are." - Brian T. O'Neill (10:17) “So, there's no right or wrong answer here. These are all range questions, and they're leadership questions, and context really matters. They are important to ask, particularly when we have this risk of reacting to incorrect information that looks plausible and believable because of how these LLMs tend to respond to us with a positive sheen much of the time.” - Brian T. O'Neill (19:00) Links View Part 1 of my article on UI/UX design considerations for LLMs in enterprise applications: https://designingforanalytics.com/resources/ui-ux-design-for-enterprise-llms-use-cases-and-considerations-for-data-and-product-leaders-in-2024-part-1/

Version 1, a leader in digital transformation, has announced it has worked with Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) to drive and support a major business transformation journey, modernising its human resources systems and in turn supporting critical business objectives. The successful delivery of the project has signposted a transformative era for the rail operator, redefining the organisational culture and operational efficiency of the business as well as the future of rail service in Ireland. Iarnród Éireann provides passenger and freight rail services across Ireland, as well as jointly operating the Dublin to Belfast Enterprise services with Northern Ireland Railways and operates Rosslare Europort. Version 1 partnered with Iarnród Éireann, not just in the delivery of a new Cloud HCM solution, but also in preparing the organisation for the transformation of its HR services and supporting the significant change management programme. The success of the project has completely transformed Iarnród Éireann's HR system, streamlining processes and reducing administrative tasks while at the same time propelling its employer brand into one that is recognised as a leading benchmark for employee engagement and satisfaction, talent management, learning and development and the critical help desk support. John Kennedy, Head of HR Organisational Development at Iarnród Éireann said "We needed a partner that could understand our approach and delivery methods. This is a key deliverable for us, so we needed to bring people on the journey with us. We knew that delivery is through people and change affects people differently, so a key decisive factor for us was the profile of the supplier. "Version 1 of course demonstrated all the technical capability required but more importantly, it could offer the strategic understanding and competencies in the business transformation element. The core values of both organisations married perfectlyand the discussions we had with Version 1 really helped us in delivering the total programme successfully." Colm Gillard, Managing Director, Enterprise Applications at Version 1 added "When we set out to help Iarnród Éireann and first had discussions, we understood immediately that people are at the heart of what they do. Moving thousands of people every day and being at the centre of the Irish economy from a freight and infrastructure point of view, it was imperative that any system we designed had to be human-centric. "We were extremely proud to be selected to work with them and one of the most rewarding impacts that we've seen has been the improvement in staff motivation and engagement. This transformation positions them at the leading edge of public service, very well-equipped to shape and define the future of rail transport in Ireland." See more stories here.
Ryan Walicki of Relish talks about why enterprise solutions rarely cover all bases; the rise of AI; & the importance of collaboration & customer experience. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [07.28] The story behind the brand name Relish. “While I'm more of a mustard and ketchup guy personally (!), Relish just really stood out to us – a word that can create certain emotions.” [09.02] Ryan's background, his love of procurement, and his journey to co-founding Relish. “I fell in love with it… I watched the perception of procurement go from ‘people who buy stuff' to a strategic function, from analytics and sourcing all the way through invoicing and payment.” [11.53] An overview of Relish – who they are, what they do, and how they help their customers. “We're trying to meet users where they are. A lot of users have succumbed to “I'll just create a workaround” or “Excel can do that for me”… Enough of that!! You should expect more, you should demand more from your enterprise software.” [15.37] The ideal client for Relish. [16.45] Ryan's perspective on why enterprise solutions rarely meet all requirements; the biggest enterprise software challenges; and how those challenges have been compounded by the industry changes we've seen over the last few years. “These solutions are presented as ‘It'll do everything you want – and cut your grass!' The customer takes that at face value, builds a business case, builds an ROI case – and they never meet it.” [20.37] How Relish is working to simplify processes, extend solutions, and bridge gaps in order to complement and enhance enterprise software. “5% of business revenue is lost due to fraudulent activity... there's too many workarounds and stale processes out there… But there's an end to this story that's a lot more positive, automated, safe, and economic than Excel workbooks.” [25.02] Why Relish is so passionate about collaboration, partnering with some of the industry's biggest names to create ecosystems that drive success for everyone. [27.18] The rapid evolution of AI, and how Relish uses it to help clients streamline and enhance their processes. “There are a lot of folks that present themselves as AI experts. But this is so new, it's moving so fast – there are no experts!” [31.47] Customer experience, and the importance of creating an effective chain of solutions for your customer, and your customer's customer. “One of the most frequent phone calls finance gets is from suppliers asking: “When am I going to get paid?” [35.34] A case study showing how Relish helped a global financial institution to solve its invoice challenges, increasing automation from 24% to over 95%, streamlining its source-to-pay process, and boosting its visibility and process speed. “We felt like the root of all evil is in master data inefficiency, and so if we built a platform that had the capability to go after that core problem, we could manifest those as applications in invoicing, supplier, and automation.” [39.25] Ryan's hockey team, and whether or not they'll be making the finals! [41.23] What the future holds for Relish, and for the industry. “The time between point A and point B keeps getting shorter because innovation is happening fast… We're outgrowing applications very quickly.” RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED: Head over to Relish's website now to find out more, and discover how they could help you too. Are enterprises ready to harness the full potential of generative AI in application modernization? In today's episode of Tech Talks Daily, we dive deep with Kyle Charlet, IBM Fellow and CTO for IBM Z Software, exploring the transformative impact of AI on hybrid cloud strategies and legacy systems. Kyle provides expert insights into how application modernization is crucial for executing successful hybrid cloud strategies, with generative AI playing a critical role in this evolution. He discusses the benefits of AI in translating outdated code from languages like COBOL to more contemporary languages such as Java, enhancing developer productivity, and ensuring business agility. With IBM's comprehensive lifecycle approach, Kyle outlines how organizations are not just rewriting, but intelligently enhancing their existing assets for future-proof platforms. We also cover the significant challenges that come with modernization, such as understanding complex, monolithic legacy applications developed over decades. Kyle explains how generative AI serves as a tool to demystify these systems, assisting in generating test cases, synthetic data, and highlighting potential security vulnerabilities that need addressing from the outset. The conversation shifts to the impact on IT roles and skills, emphasizing the increasing importance of testing, security, and integration competencies. Kyle points out that developers will need to adapt rapidly to interpret AI-generated code and focus more on application architecture and less on building from scratch. Looking ahead, Kyle speaks on the expectations for faster innovation cycles and more interconnected systems across hybrid environments. He stresses the need for Ops teams to prepare for managing this complexity and the optimization of DevSecOps pipelines to stay competitive. Join us as we explore how generative AI is reshaping the landscape of application modernization and what this means for the future of enterprise IT. After the episode, we invite you to share your thoughts: How do you see generative AI influencing your industry's approach to modernization and hybrid cloud strategies?

There are a lot of publicly available data sets out there. But when it comes to specific enterprise use cases, you're not necessarily going to be able to find one to train your models. To realize the power of AI/ML in enterprise environments, end users need an inference engine to run on their hardware. Ryan Loney takes us through OpenVINO and Anomalib, open toolkits from Intel that do precisely that. He looks specifically at anomaly detection in use cases as varied as medical imaging and manufacturing.Want to read more about Anomalib?
