All the instructions it's very easy in the show notes. Okay.. our top story this week: XX A biotech company developing stem-cell treatments for type 1 diabetes has announced a new research partnership aimed at improving the survival of transplanted insulin-producing cells. NewcelX, a clinical-stage company based in Switzerland, said it will work with Eledon Pharmaceuticals to study a combination approach. The goal is to help transplanted cells survive longer in the body by reducing the immune response that often leads to transplant rejection. If successful, the strategy could support longer-lasting islet cell replacement and move the therapy closer to becoming a functional treatment for people with type 1 diabetes. However, the companies have not yet released any safety or effectiveness data on the combination treatment, and financial details of the partnership were not disclosed. The research agreement is focused on exploring whether combining stem-cell-derived islets with targeted immune therapy can lead to longer-lasting cell transplants and improved outcomes for people with type 1 diabetes. https://www.stocktitan.net/news/ELDN/newcel-x-announces-strategic-collaboration-with-eledon-d10l1vqdofls.html XX Debate this week in the UK on whether testing for type 1 diabetes should become mandatory when children present with symptoms. The Westminster Hall debate, scheduled for 9 March, will consider calls for routine testing of babies, toddlers and young children who show signs associated with the condition. It follows a petition backing the move, dubbed 'Lyla's Law', which passed 121,000 signatures in December 2025. The campaign was launched by John Story after his two-year-old daughter, Lyla, died from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) on 3 May 2025, 16 hours after being diagnosed with tonsillitis. https://www.nursinginpractice.com/clinical/diabetes-and-endocrinology/diabetes-community-urged-to-call-on-mps-to-attend-lylas-law-debate/ XX A new study suggests that people with gestational diabetes who adjust their own insulin doses may reach healthy blood sugar levels faster than those whose doses are adjusted by clinicians. Half of the participants were assigned to adjust their own insulin doses using a simple rule: increase the dose by two units if fasting blood glucose was above 95 mg/dL, decrease it by two units if it dropped below 70 mg/dL, and keep the same dose if levels fell in between. The other half had their insulin adjusted by clinicians through weekly reviews. By the end of pregnancy, both groups had similar average fasting glucose levels before delivery: about 89 mg/dL in the patient-led group and 90 mg/dL in the clinician-led group. However, those adjusting their own insulin reached their blood sugar targets more quickly, averaging 1.8 weeks compared with 2.5 weeks for those managed by clinicians. The study also found lower risks of certain complications among the patient-led group. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/self-insulin-dosing-leads-control-gestational-diabetes-2026a1000729 XX A blockbuster anti-obesity and diabetes drug could cost as little as $3 per month to manufacture once it goes off patent later this month, researchers said Friday, providing a major opportunity to boost health in low and middle-income countries. Semaglutide, the active molecule in Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy will lose patent protection in countries such as Brazil, China, and India later this month, and researchers identified 150 countries where it was never patented. These researchers estimated it will cost as little as $3 to produce a month's supply of semaglutide, which in its branded form sells for around $200 a month in the United States. Another of the study's authors, Professor Francois Venter at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, said drugs to treat HIV, TB, malaria, and hepatitis are now available at prices close to production costs but still sufficient for generic manufacturers to operate. https://www.sciencealert.com/weight-loss-drugs-could-cost-just-3-a-month-to-make-as-patents-end XX Here in the US the FDA is stepping up its efforts to combat widespread GLP-1 drug compounding. In its latest offensive, the agency has unleashed a fresh set of 30 warning letters targeting telehealth companies it says make "false or misleading" claims about compounded versions of popular obesity drugs. The FDA says Compounded drugs can be important for overcoming shortages or meeting unique patient needs—but compounders should not try to compound drugs in a way that circumvents FDA's approval process." https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/fda-ramps-crackdown-glp-1-drug-compounders-fresh-batch-30-warning-letters XX Check your infusion sets for an issue: Unomedical, a subsidiary of Convatec and a supplier of insulin infusion sets to diabetes tech firms, has received a warning letter from the FDA. Inspectors raised concerns with leaking infusion sets, following a regulatory assessment of Unomedical's facility in Reynosa, Mexico, last summer. Unomedical supplies infusion sets to insulin pump makers including Medtronic, Tandem Diabetes Care and Beta Bionics. In a Feb. 3 statement, Convatec said the letter focuses on reporting procedures and quality protocols and does not place restrictions on producing, marketing or distributing any of Unomedical's products. Unomedical told the FDA in its responses that it plans to conduct a retrospective review of complaints involving serious injury or death by January and conduct additional training on complaint handling by May. https://www.medtechdive.com/news/fda-warns-insulin-infusion-set-maker-unomedical-over-leaks-mishandled-comp/813503/ XX Nearly four in ten people with type 2 diabetes do not take their medications as prescribed, according to a new research review published in Diabetologia in November 2025. Researchers examined existing studies on medication adherence, including how often patients miss doses, why it happens, and what strategies may help. They estimated that about 38% of patients with type 2 diabetes are not fully adherent to their medications. Adherence rates vary depending on the type of medication. About 63% to 68% of patients take oral glucose-lowering drugs as directed, while adherence drops to 43% to 54% for injectable GLP-1 medications and 41% to 64% for insulin. Poor adherence can lead to serious consequences. One retrospective study cited in the review found that patients who consistently took their glucose-lowering medications had a 31% lower risk of hospitalization or emergency department visits. The review also highlighted ways to improve adherence. Simplifying medication routines can help, such as using fixed-dose combination pills, which combine multiple drugs into a single tablet. Studies show these combinations are linked to better adherence and improved blood sugar control. Pharmacists can also play an important role by providing education, reviewing medications, setting up reminders, and helping patients organize their treatment plans. The researchers noted that support should be tailored to each patient. Older adults may benefit from simpler systems and caregiver support, while younger patients may respond better to digital tools like app-based reminders. The authors also found that measuring adherence is challenging and recommend using multiple methods, such as pharmacy records, patient interviews, and objective tests when possible. Overall, the review concludes that personalized, multi-step approaches lasting at least three months are most effective in helping people with type 2 diabetes stay on track with their medications. https://www.pharmacytimes.com/view/type-2-diabetes-medication-adherence-rates-remain-low-and-pharmacists-can-help XX New clinical trial shows metformin does not directly reverse insulin resistance in people with type 1 diabetes. Instead, it lowers the total amount of insulin required to keep blood glucose levels within the recommended range. The findings, published in Nature Communications, challenge long-held assumptions about how metformin works in type 1 diabetes. The results may help physicians refine treatment strategies and reduce the daily demands placed on people who rely solely on insulin therapy. "Insulin resistance is a growing problem in type 1 diabetes. Not only does it make regulating blood sugar levels difficult, but it is an underappreciated risk factor for heart disease, which is one of the biggest causes of health complications and deaths in those with type 1 diabetes," says Dr. Jennifer Snaith, endocrinologist and co-lead of the study. https://scitechdaily.com/groundbreaking-trial-reveals-unexpected-benefit-of-metformin-in-type-1-diabetes/ Tech news ahead, including updates from Sensonics, Dexcom & Tandem.. right after this…. Back ot the wnews.. XX Sensonics shares that it's secured FDA investigational device exemption (IDE) for its self-powered, battery-enabled Gemini sensor. It enrolled the first patients in the IDE trial and expects to complete that in the second half of 2026. Gemini builds on the implanted CGM to put the transmitter under the skin as well as the sensor. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/senseonics-q4-2025-ide-gemini-cgm/ XX Medtronic Diabetes is now officially MiniMid, a stand alone public company. Medtronic acquired MiniMed 25 years ago announed last May that it would spin its diabetes business off. In their statement the company points out that MiniMed is the only diabetes tech company to sell both insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/medtronics-diabetes-unit-minimed-valued-at-53-billion-as-shares-fall-in-nasdaq-debut-4547518 XX Kevin Sayer heads back to Dexcom.. The former CEO is back in his position as executive chair of the Board, he'd stepped away for a medical leave. Dexcom (Nasdaq:DXCM) announced today in an SEC filing that former CEO Kevin Sayer has returned from his leave of absence. Sayer's return to the board comes just days after Dexcom announced a new board member. Last week, the company announced that it added Google SVP, Platforms and Devices, Rick Osterloh, to its board as well. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/kevin-sayer-returns-dexcom-board-chair/ SAN DIEGO - DexCom, Inc. He has held this position since 2016. https://www.investing.com/news/company-news/dexcom-appoints-google-executive-rick-osterloh-to-board-93CH-4529662 XX Sequel Med Tech announced broad national availability of its twiist™ Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System powered by Tidepool. After U.S. FDA clearance in 2024 and a controlled launch to optimize the twiist experience, the system is now fully available nationwide. The release says: Built on Sequel's proprietary iiSure™ Technology, the system enables earlier detection of delivery issues, alerting users to blockages up to nine times faster than other AID systems1, potentially reducing the risk of unexplained high glucose and giving you time to take action before experiencing severe high blood sugar or DKA2. Designed to expand access to automated insulin delivery, twiist is available through pharmacy channels with a flexible access model, XX Tandem Diabetes Care's Mobi automated insulin delivery system is now available with Android devices. In November, Tandem announced that it received FDA approval for the Android version of its Mobi mobile app. The pump, which pairs with Tandem's Control-IQ+ algorithm, previously worked with iOS software. At the time of the clearance, it said it would commence a limited rollout before the full launch — now underway — this year. Tandem launched Mobi in the U.S. in February 2024. It initially received FDA clearance for people with diabetes ages six and up in July 2023. The system then received expanded clearance for pediatric indications in April 2024, then later won CE mark in May 2025. Mobi features a 200-unit insulin cartridge and an on-pump button to provide an alternative to phone control for insulin boluses. It comes in at less than half the size of the flagship Tandem pump system, the t:slim X2 pump. Mobi can fit in a coin pocket, clip to clothing or go on the body with an adhesive sleeve. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/tandem-diabetes-care-launches-mobi-android/
We are thrilled to welcome Michele Pistone, who is a professor of law at Villanova University and the director of the VIISTA online program, which trains people to serve as “accredited representatives” in immigration court without a law degree. She emphasizes the importance of legal representation for migrants and paints the startling picture of what it is like to see young children brought into immigration court and left to represent themselves. She shares stories that inspire her of people putting their passion to work, like a graduate of the VIISTA program who is helping Catholics who were persecuted in Nicaragua with their court cases.Brian and Joe recount stories from a recent trip to Houston. First, they share the details of their meeting with Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, the superior general of the global Society of Jesus. A native of Venezuela, Fr. Sosa shares a passion for immigration and understands the complexities of border dynamics. While in Houston, the Del Camino team also met up with Lisbeth and her 20-year-old daughter for breakfast. Lisbeth ran the kitchen in a Reynosa shelter, and we greatly enjoyed the food that she would prepare. She used to make us baleadas, a popular dish from Honduras, although her daughter was quick to complain that she still hasn't taught her how to make them yet!
//The Wire//1100Z February 23, 2026////PRIORITY////BLUF: CARTEL WAR KICKS OFF IN MEXICO AS CJNG LEADER KILLED BY MEXICAN FORCES.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events-Mexico: Yesterday afternoon Mexican forces conducted a raid in the town of Tapalpa, Jalisco, with the objective of capturing Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes (Alias: "El Mencho"), the leader of the CJNG Cartel. During the operation, El Mencho was killed, which triggered heavy fighting between the Mexican government and the CJNG cartel throughout the afternoon. So far, most of the heavy fighting has been observed in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, two cities which have historically served as CJNG strongholds.Immediately after Mencho's death, CJNG forces declared a general mobilization throughout Jalisco, which encompasses most of their territory. Most of the fighting throughout the afternoon took the form of knee-jerk, rapid response elements engaging Mexican authorities with small arms and crew served weapons, mostly via skirmishes in the street in various small towns scattered throughout the district. Violence is not confined to just Jalisco, burning vehicles were observed in the town of Reynosa, just across the border from McAllen, Texas.Throughout the evening, a more organized and substantial deployment was undertaken, with heavier weapons and armored vehicles being deployed to engage government forces throughout the region. In the town of Puerto Vallarta, combat actions were reported throughout the afternoon with CJNG briefly holding the city for some time. Within a few hours, Government forces rolled in hard with air support, pushing CJNG out of the city (or at least, out of fighting positions on the street) by nightfall.Throughout the countryside, many roads are impassable due to cartel forces digging anti-tank ditches across the roadway, emplacing roadblocks, and otherwise digging in for what they perceive to be a draw-out fight.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Throughout much of Mexico, the situation can be described as a state of pandemonium and chaos. There's no way to determine front lines or Centers of Gravity at the moment, as all of the violence observed throughout the afternoon is representative of whatever combat power local CJNG cells had at their safehouses. El Mencho was the patriarch of the CJNG, and more of a grandfather figurehead of the cartel family than an operational leader. As one might expect, killing a sicario's grandfather in such a manner has dialed the violence up to eleven. As soon as word got out that El Mencho was dead, everyone grabbed their rifles and started shooting at whatever Mexican authorities were in their area. The next few days will probably see even more organized violence as cartel leadership organizes more significantly for combat actions in the long term. Since the CJNG cartel has been allied with the Gulf Cartel for some time, violence has continued right up to the US border.Due to the rapid breakout of war throughout the region, most entities were not expecting small arms engagements on a peaceful Sunday afternoon. Cities known for heavy tourism industry are directly in the center of much of the fighting, with off-season tourists being caught in the middle of the conflict. As a reminder, Guadalajara is scheduled to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, and right now many high-level soccer matches have brought scores of tourists and sports fans to the exact district that is now host to heavy fighting.Guests at the many tourist resorts scattered throughout the region suddenly found their afternoon cocktail hour interrupted by gunfire and shrapnel, and throughout the evening most civilians throughout the region spent many hours sheltering in place, or fleeing the area if they could. The US State Department has issued shelter-in-place orders for the following areas

MCALLEN, Texas - Ralph Garcia, interim chief operating officer for McAllen Economic Development Corporation, has given a brief update on the various projects the group is working on. “Right now, the EDC is working with about 25 active projects. This represents a total of about three million square feet of space. Estimated jobs are about 8,000 and the economic impact of that is roughly about $5 billion dollars,” Garcia said a quarterly stakeholders meeting.“Primarily, our companies are coming from France, Sweden, Mexico, the US and Japan. Those are the activities that we're seeing right now.”Garcia said McAllen EDC has secured two new leads during the current quarter, along with 23 existing prospects."We also continue to work on state leads. Most of what we're seeing coming through, the focus is on manufacturing and, of course, distribution and logistics. Those are projects that we continue to work with.”Garcia said the MEDC team working on active projects includes Susie Flores in McAllen and Rafael Angel Ortiz Salazar in Reynosa. “And, of course, we continue to do BRE (business retention and expansion) visits with a lot of our existing business, both in McAllen and Reynosa. We find that most of the leads that we're generating right now are through a BRE visit, where we're learning of current projects that companies are looking at.”Garcia said quite a few of those expansion projects involve South America.“We're trying to leverage those projects, to look at Texas as an alternative option. One of the advantages that we have is our low cost, so that helps us. But, we're always trying to get in front of those projects, versus them leaving the area completely.”Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.
We are delighted to welcome Sue Weishar, a lifelong immigrant advocate who lives in New Orleans, LA. She is the former director of Immigration and Refugee Services at Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and a former policy and research fellow with Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI) at Loyola University New Orleans. Currently, she is the chair of the social justice committee at her local parish, St. Anthony of Padua. Sue talks about the positive impact of immigrants in the city of New Orleans, especially in the recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina. She shares stories of the way her parish and community have been impacted by increased immigrant enforcement, including the separation of families.Brian and Joe also share stories of families who are separated as a result of immigration policy. Joe shares the story of Amanda, a teenage girl at a shelter in Reynosa, who he connected with over a mutual interest in the writings of JRR Tolkien (although we will let you guess which one is the bigger fan!). Amanda was with her dad and siblings in Mexico, while her mom lives in Texas: a family separated, trying to decide how to reunite. Brian shares the story of Javier, who was picked up by ICE and deported after living two decades in the U.S., leaving behind his wife and kids. //The Wire//2300Z May 29, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CARTEL VIOLENCE CONTINUES IN MEXICO. RUSSIAN NUCLEAR SECRETS ALLEGEDLY DISCLOSED IN LARGE-SCALE INTELLIGENCE LEAK. DETAILS EMERGE REGARDING SHOOTING IN COLORADO.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Russia: Over the past few days, various journalistic media groups have claimed to be the recipient of a large number of classified documents pertaining to Russia's nuclear arsenal and readiness procedures. Specifically, claims have been made that this leak encompasses more than two million documents and is the largest leak of military information in Russia's history.AC: The media groups making these claims have not released any solid details yet, so until actual evidence comes forth, there's no possible way to determine if any of this is true. As a reminder, this very specific situation has happened before: Journalists have claimed to have something exceptionally damaging to Russia and when it's released it turns out to be nothing at all. On the other hand, Russia also has a history of accidentally leaking highly classified information on live television (such as their intercontinental nuclear torpedo, the Status-6 project). As such, until something becomes public there's no way to interpret these claims.Mexico: Multiple mass graves have been discovered this week. The remains of 5x musicians have been recovered from a vacant lot in the border town of Reynosa, after they were reported missing a few days ago. Further into Mexico's interior, the remains of 17x cartel victims were recovered from a mass grave located inside a vacant house in Abasolo.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - Elon Musk has announced that he is no longer affiliated with DOGE, as his 130-day tenure as a temporary government employee has come to an end.AC: This "role-reduction" is probably for several reasons. Since his work at DOGE was never really advertised as a permanent position, this departure is not really that out of the ordinary. However, this is a flimsy excuse at best; the White House could have always pencil-whipped whatever paperwork needed to allow his continued work at DOGE.The real reason behind him stepping back to the private sector is probably for reasons surrounding the latest omnibus spending bill not including a single reduction in inefficiency identified by DOGE. Musk made comments against Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill", and now he's out. Somewhat ironically, the U.S. Department of Efficiency has an efficiency rate of zero percent, as not one single inefficiency in government spending identified by this department has been codified in law. Whether or not Musk's departure will mean the death of DOGE is anyone's guess, but as it stands, DOGE never really lived in the first place.Colorado: More details have come to light following a suspected domestic shooting that took place in Colorado Springs last Saturday. 6x people were shot during the battle, with 1x fatality reported at the scene, and 5x others remaining in critical condition. Multiple shooters have been reported in conjunction with this incident, some of which are the individuals that were shot.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: This seems like a small detail, but the shootout in Colorado Springs is a case study that may serve as a barometer for how the summer might go. Initially, this incident was reported as a routine shooting and/or a possible active shooter situation in the vicinity of Potter Drive. However, follow-on information suggests this was not simply a shoot-and-scoot engagement, but was actually a protracted small arms skirmish that lasted several minutes. If local groups, gangs, or just normal street criminals become empowered in a local area to the point where they shift into standing their ground during a gunfight (instead of breaking contact as is what normally happens when the shoo

We are delighted to welcome Sr. Patricia Mulderick, RSM, from the immigration cohort of ARISE Adelante. ARISE Adelante empowers immigrants living in low income communities in south Texas to attain a better life for themselves, their families, and their community. Sr. Patricia has been part of the immigration cohort at ARISE for a few years, after spending 37 years in South America. She talks about her journey from growing up in coal-country Pennsylvania to becoming a Sister of Mercy and spending decades in Peru. Along with working at ARISE, Sr. Patricia has dedicated time to accompanying migrants in camps and shelters in Reynosa and shares moving stories of encountering Christ in the people she has gotten to know through prayer, conversation, and artwork.Brian and Joe share stories that reflect how we can be invited to be Christ to one another. Brian tells the story of a recent Zoom reunion with people who had spent time at migrant shelters in northern Mexico and are now living across the US. This year has been marked by a lot of fear and uncertainty for the migrant community, so the gathering gave people an opportunity to connect, share, and pray. Joe tells the story of his recent birthday celebration. When the kids at Senda 2 were praying over him, he had to kneel down to their level. As they placed their hands on his bowed head, he felt the presence of Christ himself made manifest through the children.

Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Fernando A. Flores, author of the novel Brother Brontë. Set in Texas in 2038, it is a dark tale of a future where books are burned, the libraries are closed, and your neighbor may turn you in for having books. In the interview, Flores said, "...for those of us who have traveled to the valley by car, we've been through Three Rivers many times. And it's frightening because you posit an authoritarian police city-state with people that are coopted by the city-state, with people that resist the city-state, and with people that are just trying to get by, like our protagonist, Naftali, who's just trying to get by. And I say it's, it's a little bit frightening because of, you know, if, if you look at where we are today and where we could be in 13 years...I'm hoping it's not...prescient..."Fernando A. Flores was born in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and grew up in South Texas. He is the author of the collections Death to the Bullshit Artists of South Texas and Valleyesque and the novel Tears of the Trufflepig, which was long-listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and named a best book of 2019 by Tor.com. His fiction has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books Quarterly, American Short Fiction, Ploughshares, Frieze, Porter House Review, and elsewhere. He lives in Austin, Texas.
