Ohio educators want professional development opportunities that give them the tools to be the best educators possible for their students. But, too often, school districts prescribe PD that doesn't feel like a valuable use of anyone's time. Ohio's Educator Standards Board set out to change that by making the state's Professional Learning Standards more user-friendly and more useful. Educator Standards Board member Eugene Mach walks us through the process and the changes that are in the pipeline for educators around the state.SEE THE CURRENT STANDARDS | If you'd like to look at the previously adopted Standards for Professional Development to see how they compare to the new Professional Learning Standards as proposed, click here to read the full document. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE NEW STANDARDS | The Educator Standards Board voted to move their newly developed Professional Learning Standards forward to the State Board of Education for consideration in March. The Professional Learning Standards document is not on the agenda for the State Board of Education's April meeting. Check the State Board of Education's webpage to keep tabs on when the document moves forward and to see the latest version of the document under consideration. Please note, the Educator Standards Board voted on March 7, 2025, to move forward this version of the Professional Learning Standards without the words 'equity' or 'inclusion,' despite the objections of several ESB members, including Eugene Mach, who is featured in this episode. This episode was recorded before that vote took place, so discussions about those changes are not included in the conversation you hear here.  SUBSCRIBE | Click here to subscribe to Public Education Matters on Apple Podcasts or click here to listen on Spotify so you don't miss a thing. But the United States is widely regarded as the home of democracy and the leader of the struggle for freedom, for human rights and human dignity.” -Secretary of State Dean Rusk before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, 1963 (The Department of State Bulletin, Volume 49: “Fulfilling Our Basic Commitments as a Nation, Statement by Secretary Rusk”) About the Speaker Secretary Alphonso Jackson, former Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, has decades of experience in housing and community development. Dr. Edmond ("Ed") Dugas, Research Coordinator for the Athletic Network at UL – Lafayette, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his career at UL - Lafayette and his lifelong dedication to athletics at the institution. In 2002, Ed was the driving force behind creation of the Athletic Network ("AN"), which showcases athletes/sports in UL's past. Mike Spears of Firefly Digital developed the website. AN provides an historical and educational clearinghouse of information about Louisiana athletics and the University spanning over 110 years. It also serves as a communications database for former athletes, support groups, faculty, administration and fans. Ed and his son, John Dugas, are volunteers who personally enter the data and take responsibility for accuracy of the site's materials. It is truly a labor of love and devotion to UL - Lafayette sports! Ed is a native of Evergreen LA (located between Bunkie and Cottonport). A graduate of Evergreen High School, Ed had intended to enter the Air Force Academy but his plans were short-circuited by health issues relating to his inner ears. Luckily, the Principal of his Evergreen High School was close friends and the college roommate with SLI (now UL - Lafayette) President Joel Fletcher, who convinced Ed that he should attend college in Lafayette. And as they say....the rest is history. When Ed started college in 1958, UL Lafayette was then known as South Louisiana Institute or "SLI." Its original name was SLII (South Louisiana Industrial Institute). In 1960, the university was renamed to USL, an acronym for University of Southwestern Louisiana, and an endeavor in which Ed was actively engaged. (The university was renamed to University of Louisiana at Lafayette in September 1999. Ed joking says that "We change our name every 39 years." Governor Mike Foster signing legislation renaming USL to University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Ed looks back upon his time at USL with fondness and shares how student workers worked hard, up to 100 hours per month, for the sum of $40 per month, while they still had to pay $16 per month to cover room and board! But the experience was invaluable and Ed taught tennis and coached basketball as he worked with Dave Fisher. Ed went on to graduate from USL in August 1962 and was mentored by USL's late, great basketball coach, Dutch Reinhardt. He earned a Masters and Doctorate in Physical Education and Education Administration. He looks back with admiration of the talented staff he worked with, including Dr. David Fisher, Fred Nelson, Clyde Wolf, Dr. Jim Kennison, and Al Simon. Ed served on the UL faculty in a variety of positions and ranks from 1967 until he retired in 2001. Administratively, he served in the following positions at USL: Coordinator, Men's Physical Education; Coordinator, Graduate Studies for the College of Education; Head, Department of Health and Physical Education; and Director of Student Teaching. He was the first Executive Director of the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. In 1988, Ed was one of three graduates selected as “Outstanding Graduates” from the USL College of Education in their 25th year after their graduation date. In 2001, he was awarded the Professor Emeritus title at UL -Lafayette. Dr. Ed Dugas pictured in red jacket with the first officers of the new College of Education Alumni Chapter, with Dr. Ray Authement on far right. As you'll hear during this interview, Ed has been anything but a retiree in the past twenty years. Ed's life has been defined by athletics, both in teaching and reporting on the athletic history of UL – Lafayette through the Athletic Network, which provides a place for former University athletes and fans to connect and join support teams for their favorite sports. After a two-year hiatus, the Athletic Network went live again on December 13, 2023 thanks to a significant donation made to the Athletic Network by Edmond “Bruce”...

After serving in the military for almost eight years, Alec joined Booz Allen Hamilton, earned his MBA at Wharton, and then joined McKinsey as a consultant. We also offer a number of weekly programs, a newsletter, things like that, that veterans can use, to better inform their college decision. I'd like each of you also to give us a little background on your personal journeys to involvement with Service to School. And Sydney, why don't you start with that one? [3:33] Sydney Matthes: Yeah, absolutely. I actually started as an ambassador. So during my time as an independent admissions consultant, I was consistently approached by soldiers. My husband is active duty army, so he would send me soldiers that had questions...

They're holding their inaugural 806 Technologies Learning Summit from June 8-10 at the Omni Frisco Hotel in Frisco, TX. What led 806 Technologies to launch this summit?“We want to get people face-to-face,” Dougherty said. “Coming out of the pandemic and the time when so many people were so isolated, we know the power and the energy that exists when people get together, face-to-face. So, that's why we are doing it first. But the other is to build that sense of synergy, to bring people together in various leadership roles in education from across the nation to share best practices, to encourage one another, and to strategize together.”Marshall and Dougherty cover the following during their conversation...● The particulars of the summit and who should attend● Speakers attending the conference and what topics they'll cover● The summit's spotlight on the importance of mental health for students“One of the things we'll talk about is how to explicitly include mental health in your improvement plan because it has to be very deliberate,” Dougherty said. “It can't be something we kind of stick in there as a little footnote. It has to be a very thoughtful, deliberate, intentional incorporation of this in everything that we do.”About KevinKevin Dougherty is a forty-year veteran in the education space. Shortly after the move his life was shattered as his family was involved in a fatal car accident that took the lives of his brother Race Sawyer, his nephew Rider Sawyer, his wife Kortni, his son Riggins, and his daughter Franki. The accident occurred on July 25, 2021. Mason has now become solely focused on raising his son, Blue, who survived the car accident. His mission is to help other people by living the 10/90 Principle. I spent the next five months with no job. Somebody here me…No job, no income. But it was the most valuable time because I had time to figure out, “how in the world did I get here? How did I find myself in this place? And most of all, how do I dig myself out of it?” And that's what I'm here to share.   [00:0011:30] I know for me and that transition in 2019, I was escaping. Like I literally hit rock bottom. You don't have to get to the point that you have to escape. You can plan a transition. I know we're talking to multiple passionate people. When you break out of that mindset of, “this is all I can do” and you understand all of the ways that you can express the purpose that you're called to, then you can make a plan to transition yourself. So you don't have to escape. I eventually went back to higher education and I worked a little, but longer my most recent transition into full-time entrepreneurship was a planned transition I wasn't escaping I was transitioning.   [00:013:00] You don't have to escape. You don't have to get to rock bottom. You are not stuck. I was convinced I was trapped and I was stuck. There's nothing I can do. But once you open up to understand, I call it discovering your brilliance. Once you discover your brilliance and you know what you're called to do and you realize you can do it in a lot of different ways, the whole world opens up. Then you can see clearly and you can make a plan. Rather that transition is 6 months, one year, five years, whatever it is for you, I just wanna say we escaped because we had to, but you don't have to! [00:16:13] Many times we choose our community out of convenience, so our family members, our physical neighbors, our colleagues, the people that we're just in their lives because of convenience. And that doesn't mean you don't love them or honor them. Not in a disrespectful way. But they are your community because they're already connected to you. In one way or another, but sometimes our convenient community can't understand what God is calling us to do.   You need powerful community. You need community that you have to invest to get in; that you have to apply to get in. You need community that pushes you beyond where you are. Your convenience level and that will pull you forward into what you're called to do. That's where you're gonna get those comments of, “Oh yeah, you're supposed to be doing that…Why are you playing?” That's where you're gonna get those questions that challenge your mental box.   Your convenient community will always keep you comfortable, because they they're comfortable. They don't understand the stretch. They don't. It doesn't make logical sense to them. But your powerful community will always call you up. They will, challenge those mental boxes. There's a certain box that you are taught to stay in.     Dr. Patrice Buckner Jackson Biography:   Dr. Patrice Buckner Jackson, known in her community as Dr. PBJ, is an educator of almost 25 years and an Executive Coach for more than 10 years.
