Michael Bishop grew up surrounded by emotional trauma, bullying, homelessness, and instability, moving in and out of the foster care system while dealing with serious issues at home. Fighting became a way to survive, and that anger eventually led to him being locked inside Massachusetts juvenile detention centers for nearly two years. In this episode, Michael shares a firsthand account of life inside youth detention, including physical abuse by guards and the long-term impact of being punished instead of protected. This conversation exposes the harsh realities of the juvenile justice system and how a broken upbringing and systemic failures shaped the course of his life. _____________________________________________ #JuvenileDetention #PrisonStories #JusticeSystem #SurvivorStory #TrueCrimePodcast #Massachusetts #LifeBehindBars #lockedin _____________________________________________ Thank you to PRIZEPICKS & GOLD DROP SELTZERS for sponsoring this episode: PRIZEPICKS: Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/IANBICK and use code IANBICK and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! _____________________________________________ GOLD DROP: Head to https://www.thedryoak.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout for 10% off your order. _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Brutal Beginnings Inside Juvenile Detention 00:40 Childhood Trauma, Homelessness & Foster Care 01:05 Meet Mike: His Story Begins 02:24 Growing Up With Instability & Family Struggles 05:04 Homelessness, Loss & a Broken Family System 08:26 Bullying, New Schools & Feeling Like an Outsider 13:13 Gifted Programs, Mental Health & Acting Out 16:32 Rebellion, Police Encounters & the CHINS Program 23:00 School Fights, Suspensions & Falling Behind 27:27 DSS Group Homes & Foster Care 33:02 Foster Homes, School Incidents & Authority Clashes 40:54 Probation, Drug Tests & Escalating Legal Trouble 46:26 Alternative School, Metal Detectors & Physical Restraints 53:46 Probation Chaos, Failed Drug Tests & Court Dates 56:14 Sentenced to Juvenile Detention 01:01:14 Intake & Assessment Unit: Fear, Isolation & First Restraints 01:11:51 Westborough Secure Unit: Abuse, Trauma & Turning 18 01:20:05 Staff Abuse, Manipulation & Surviving the System 01:31:01 Developing Narcolepsy While Locked Up 01:39:27 Violence, Corruption & Hard Lessons Learned 01:46:03 Other Kids' Stories: System Failure on Repeat 01:53:37 The Final Straw: Restraint, Investigation & Consequences 02:02:02 Transferred to a New Facility: A Glimmer of Hope 02:08:11 Release From Juvie, Recovery & Life After Lockup 02:13:29 Mental Health, Healing & Breaking the Cycle 02:16:49 Final Thoughts: Advice for At-Risk Youth Learn more about your ad choices. ESB Networks has announced the launch of its new 'Weather Watch' Schools Programme aimed at supporting Junior Cycle and Transition Year Geography students to explore the links between weather patterns and renewable energy sources. Nearly 8,100 secondary school students across 90 schools nationwide are taking part in the programme and have received a free weather station from ESB Networks to encourage learning about energy, electricity, and the impact weather has on renewable electricity generation. The programme encourages conversations beyond the classroom, helping students bring energy awareness into their homes. By creating discussions about energy use, the initiative encourages participation in ESB Networks' "Is This a Good Time?" programme. This initiative supports tips about electricity consumption, helping people to make informed decisions about their electricity use, such as shifting electricity use away from peak times (5-7 pm) or to times when there is surplus renewable energy available on the network. Through the use of outdoor weather stations and supporting learning materials, the programme links classroom theory with real-world applications. Each weather station comes with a digital display directly linked to the station, allowing students to gather learnings from within the classroom. The lessons teach students how weather like wind or solar, impacts renewable energy in practice - and how this can be used to help make more informed decisions on energy usage. Additionally, the weather station is linked to ESBNetworks.ie/weatherwatch, enabling each participating school to share their learnings. Key features of the Weather Watch Schools Programme include: Hands-on learning: Weather stations are provided to all participating schools, giving students direct access to the science behind renewable energy generation. Skills development: Students will develop and use critical thinking, data analysis and problem-solving skills. Broaden sustainability knowledge: Students are provided the opportunity to broaden their understanding of sustainable practices in their everyday lives. Cross-curricular applications: The programme brings together knowledge from geography, math, and environmental studies. Lindsay Sharpe, Strategy and Customer Manager at ESB Networks, said: "The ESB Networks Weather Watch schools programme is a pivotal initiative that empowers the next generation with the knowledge and skills to understand the critical role of electricity and weather in our daily lives. By engaging students in meaningful conversations and practical activities, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of renewable energy and its impact on electricity consumption. This programme not only educates but also inspires students to take proactive steps towards a sustainable future. The programme provides a new avenue to educate young people about energy and environmental efficiency allowing for interesting and active learning to take place." Claire Phelan, Geography Teacher at Patrician Secondary School Cork, whose students are partaking in the programme, added: "ESB Networks' Weather Watch Schools Programme has encouraged our students to think more deeply about the connections between weather conditions, climate conditions, and the link in generating renewable energy sources. Students are using their knowledge from this programme to become energy ambassadors at home." For more information, visit ESB Networks' Weather Watch | Sustainability Education.

In this episode, I talk with a student from the New School about the encampments there and what we can learn from the experience. Students at the New School set up their encampment in the lobby of the University Center in April a few days after the encampment was established at Columbia University and over 100 students were arrested. The New School student encampment last for over two weeks and eventually took the Parsons Building across the street, before President Donna Shalala had the students arrested early one morning. A few days later, faculty at the New Schools set up another encampment at the University that also lasted a couple weeks and eventually took the Welcome Center, holding it a few days before disbanding on the promise of a vote on divestment (which has not been delivered). In this conversation, we talk about the way the university administration dealt with the encampment, using less brute force than many of the other schools, and how this altered the organization of the encampment. In going through the whole experience, we discuss how our groups start mirroring bureaucracies, the use of divestment as a goal, the changing experience of study of revolutionary texts in the context of an encampment as opposed to the classroom, and more. Ultimately, we don't know where the energy that was invigorated by the encampments will turn up next in resistance to genocide and control. But it is important to look at our actions and name their consequences. If you like this show, please share with your friends and rate and follow us wherever you get podcasts. Note: this is a special episode of The Disagreement. What you're about to hear is a live recording from the New Schools Summit, one of the most important education events of the year. This our first ever live taping and we had a blast. Huge shout out to the NewSchools team for making it happen. And we should add that we're taking our podcast on the road! Would you like The Disagreement to come to your conference, event, off-site, college, synagogue, or mosque? We want to hear from you! Email podcast@thedisagreement.com.--Today's disagreement is on The Math Wars. For some context, “the math wars” is a debate happening in K-12 education about the best way to teach math. Broadly speaking, there are two camps that have conflicting pedagogical approaches:Explicit instruction focuses on procedural fluency, guided practice, and repetition.Inquiry-based instruction focuses on conceptual understanding, open-ended problems, and productive struggle. This is an incredibly high-stakes debate — especially if you have children or loved ones that are currently receiving K-12 math instruction. To explore its contours, we've brought on two math education experts:Kevin Dykema is President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), an international organization with more than 30,000 members. Kevin has been a passionate advocate for inquiry-based instruction and NCTM is one of the method's leading proponents. Kevin is also a teacher — currently in southwest Michigan — and he has taught 8th grade mathematics for over 25 years.Holly Korbey is an independent education journalist, whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and many more. Holly also writes and produces The Bell Ringer, a Substack newsletter about the science of learning.Today we ask a wide range of important questions about the Math Wars:How do children actually learn math, and what's the best way to teach them?Which approach has a more compelling body of evidence on its side? What is the best way to teach students from low-income and marginalized communities?Show NotesWhy the math wars are consequential [03:20]Inquiry-based instruction overview [05:19]Cognitive science [06:52]Relationship between conceptual understanding and fluency [11:26]Productive struggle [13:15]Research overview [20:05]What does explicit instruction look like?
