Susan Pendergrass speaks with Patrick Tuohey, senior fellow at the Show-Me Institute, about the Kansas City 33 School District's recent proposal to issue $424 million in bonds for building improvements. Despite a significant decline in enrollment and a previous failed bond referendum, KCPS is asking taxpayers to fund this initiative through increased property taxes. They discuss whether new buildings can truly address the district's deeper issues, such as poor academic performance and declining enrollment, if the funds could be better spent elsewhere, and more. In this episode, I talk with a student from the New School about the encampments there and what we can learn from the experience. Students at the New School set up their encampment in the lobby of the University Center in April a few days after the encampment was established at Columbia University and over 100 students were arrested. The New School student encampment last for over two weeks and eventually took the Parsons Building across the street, before President Donna Shalala had the students arrested early one morning. A few days later, faculty at the New Schools set up another encampment at the University that also lasted a couple weeks and eventually took the Welcome Center, holding it a few days before disbanding on the promise of a vote on divestment (which has not been delivered). In this conversation, we talk about the way the university administration dealt with the encampment, using less brute force than many of the other schools, and how this altered the organization of the encampment. In going through the whole experience, we discuss how our groups start mirroring bureaucracies, the use of divestment as a goal, the changing experience of study of revolutionary texts in the context of an encampment as opposed to the classroom, and more. Ultimately, we don't know where the energy that was invigorated by the encampments will turn up next in resistance to genocide and control. But it is important to look at our actions and name their consequences. If you like this show, please share with your friends and rate and follow us wherever you get podcasts. Note: this is a special episode of The Disagreement. What you're about to hear is a live recording from the New Schools Summit, one of the most important education events of the year. This our first ever live taping and we had a blast. Huge shout out to the NewSchools team for making it happen. And we should add that we're taking our podcast on the road! Would you like The Disagreement to come to your conference, event, off-site, college, synagogue, or mosque? We want to hear from you! Email podcast@thedisagreement.com.--Today's disagreement is on The Math Wars. For some context, “the math wars” is a debate happening in K-12 education about the best way to teach math. Broadly speaking, there are two camps that have conflicting pedagogical approaches:Explicit instruction focuses on procedural fluency, guided practice, and repetition.Inquiry-based instruction focuses on conceptual understanding, open-ended problems, and productive struggle. This is an incredibly high-stakes debate — especially if you have children or loved ones that are currently receiving K-12 math instruction. To explore its contours, we've brought on two math education experts:Kevin Dykema is President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), an international organization with more than 30,000 members. Kevin has been a passionate advocate for inquiry-based instruction and NCTM is one of the method's leading proponents. Kevin is also a teacher — currently in southwest Michigan — and he has taught 8th grade mathematics for over 25 years.Holly Korbey is an independent education journalist, whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and many more. Holly also writes and produces The Bell Ringer, a Substack newsletter about the science of learning.Today we ask a wide range of important questions about the Math Wars:How do children actually learn math, and what's the best way to teach them?Which approach has a more compelling body of evidence on its side? What is the best way to teach students from low-income and marginalized communities?Show NotesWhy the math wars are consequential [03:20]Inquiry-based instruction overview [05:19]Cognitive science [06:52]Relationship between conceptual understanding and fluency [11:26]Productive struggle [13:15]Research overview [20:05]What does explicit instruction look like? “Everyone thinks that you have to have your life sorted by the time you're in your twenties. But you don't. That's still really young, you have your whole life ahead of you. But actually, Grandma, the other day, she was asking me what I wanted to do when I'm older, and I was like, “I don't know.” And she was like, “Well you better figure it out soon.” And I was like, “Okay, Grandma!” And mom was like, “Don't listen to her. Just do whatever you want to do. No stress.”Episode #83 of The Hope Initiative with Amelia MacDonald.Part 4 of my chat with my youngest sister, Amelia MacDonald. On the cusp of turning 15, Milly shares her thoughts on country life following a move at the turn of the year, navigating a new school, the dating scene, creativity, plus plenty more. It's a treasure to chat with her on the podcast and I'm honoured to be bringing this one to you to listen to.If you'd like to catch up, the following episodes can be found below;Episode #2: Part 1 - The ProdigyEpisode #51: Part 2 - Too Scared to QuitEpisode #63: Part 3 - Underage DrinkingProduced by RUKKUSFollow and connect with the podcast on Instagram and TwitterMusic by Jess Fairlie
On this episode of What's Up with Mike McShane, we talk with New Schools for Baton Rouge CEO Ken Campbell. He tells us some challenges that some schools in Baton Rouge are facing as well as some success stories and ways to keep improving and moving forward.
Education is compulsory but school is not. Under the 1996 Education Act, parents have a responsibility to provide their children with a suitable education whether at school or otherwise. School does not suit all children or lifestyles. Parents choose home education for a number of reasons, the topmost of which is the desire to give their children a quality, individualised education that will equip them for their adult life in an ever-faster-changing world. This may all change. Parliament is currently debating a proposal for a new education bill. The New Schools Bill will also impose new requirements on Home educating parents. So how will this change your life and why should you be concerned? In Episode 81 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share why home educators should be concerned about the New Schools Bill. Read the New Schools Bill HERE: https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3156 New Schools Bill and Home Education The changes in the Schools Bill impact England, but not currently Wales and Scotland. Local authorities must have a register of all children not in school. Every local authority is different and without strict guidelines, there is a risk that LAs will abuse their new powers. Parents can be fined up to £1000-£2500 for failing to comply with new regulations Local authorities must now provide support to home educators but no specifics have been given on what this will look like. Instead of protecting home educators, these changes treat us as a problem that needs to be controlled. Many are concerned about what this will lead to. No specifics are given on what information will be collected to assess if a "suitable education" is being provided by parents. The Bill and amendments are currently being discussed in the House of Lords throughout June. Petitions against the Schools Bill by home educators are available to sign nationwide. The easiest way to find it is by searching on Facebook for the New Schools Bill and your consistency name.
