So fine that, at first we thought they were photographs.  But, no...it is art work created by the very talented livestock illustrator CJ Brown.  CJ not only creates these amazing portraits but she also writes books and loves to talk about beef production in the U.S. You can see her work here but first, listen to her story. As the state fair kicks off its 169th year, students from all corners of the state congregate to the Iowa State Fairgrounds to eat deep-fried [insert food here], ride fair attractions, and enjoy the free shows and entertainment. Many people, even in the most agricultural affluent state in the country, may not know of the animal showings that run all week long brought by 4-H and FFA chapters from the entire state.  While rural Iowa may know the animal showings brought from their communities from students that raised them, many urban area students may not even know a competition like this exists in their city. Des Moines Public Schools started Central Campus to guide students from the five Des Moines Public High Schools to sharpen them for technical degrees and development after graduation. The Environmental & Agricultural Sciences Academy instructor, Kevin Anderson, invited the GROW Podcast and podcast host, Ashley Kaldenberg, to talk about how agriculture can be better marketed to urban based youth.  Highlights from this episode:  With the rising labor problems in the ag industry, it's going to be important to span into urban areas with agriculture.  Getting urban based kids exposure to agriculture opens the door for all the areas of interest in the ag industry.  Show notes:  Central Campus  Connect with us  Watch The Episode

Welcome to the weekend! This is Stephen Colbert from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Saturday, August 12th, and Sunday, August 13th, 2023.According to the National Weather Service, temperatures on Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high near 89, cooling to a low around 63 Saturday evening.Sunday will be Partly sunny, with a high near 86 and a 20 percent chance of showers after 1pm before cooling to 63 Sunday night with showers and a chance of thunderstorms.Making sweet corn sweeter is on the plate of Iowa State researchersSummer is the smell of cut grass, weekend barbecues and — especially in Iowa — the taste of sweet corn, which few people know better than Alan Myers. An Iowa State University professor of biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology since 1987, Myers has made it his mission to make sweet corn sweeter. The most recent USDA-funded sweet corn research, run through the University of Florida, offered scientists $8 million to — among other things — develop new breeding tools, improve early-season tolerance and determine factors driving consumer preference. The $800 million in American sweet corn grown annually accounts for about 1 percent of the country's corn production — which is dominated by field corn. Sweet corn consumption has been trending down for decades.Sweet corn is being celebrated this weekend at the annual St. Jude's Catholic Church Sweet Corn Festival in northwest Cedar Rapids, where volunteers have shucked some 18,000 ears of corn to prepare.Festivities include carnival rides, entertainment, games and food — including, of course, hot buttered ears of sweet corn.Chuck Grassley: ‘It's about time' for Hunter Biden special counselIowa U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley said Friday he welcomes the appointment of a special counsel for the investigation into Hunter Biden, the president's son, but said he has reservations about the person selected for the post due to concerns about political bias in the U.S. Justice Department and the appointment of U.S. Attorney David Weiss of Delaware as the special counsel.Weiss, a U.S. attorney appointed by former President Donald Trump, was already leading an investigation into Hunter Biden about alleged unpaid federal taxes and an alleged gun possession crime. A plea deal between the prosecution and Hunter Biden's attorneys fell apart last month when a judge rejected the deal.“I have some questions about Weiss doing it, because Johnson and I sent all of this material we had … in regard to the payments that were made to Hunter Biden, and we don't know what they did with them," Grassley said.Republican candidates flock to Iowa State Fair's opening dayFor the next 10 days, the Iowa State Fairgrounds will be the center of the battle for the Republican nomination for president. The fair is virtually mandatory for anyone running for president as a Republican, a chance to meet voters from across the state, sample various foods on sticks and exhibit the retail politicking vital to winning support in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.Four candidates visited the fair Thursday, and a dozen more, including Democrats and a Libertarian, are expected to visit later.Former Vice President Mike Pence drew the largest crowd Thursday at the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox, where he implored several dozen people that it was time to “restore a threshold of civility in public life.”California radio talk show host Larry Elder kicked off Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds' “Fair-Side Chats” at JR's Southwest Pork Ranch. The chats will be a series of discussions Reynolds will be holding throughout the fair with most presidential candidates. After flipping burgers and chops at the Iowa Pork Tent, North Dakota Gov. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, October 27.It will be another pleasant fall day on Thursday. According to the National Weather Service it will be partly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 58 degrees. On Thursday night it will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 37 degrees.Art Sathoff, the recently retired superintendent of the Indianola Community School District, was named Wednesday as the interim superintendent of the Cedar Rapids Community School District. The vote was 6-1, with Dexter Merschbrock opposed. He did not give an explanation from the dais of his vote.Former Superintendent Noreen Bush, 51, died Sunday. She was diagnosed with cancer more than two years ago. Friends and colleagues said Bush was a “rock star,” “leader among leaders” and a “model for doing what's right for kids.”Bush went on family medical leave in September. The school board approved her resignation letter last month, effective June 30, setting in motion a superintendent search process.Former president Donald Trump is coming to Iowa next month to campaign for the Republicans on the ballot, and, presumably, himself.Trump plans to hold a campaign rally at Sioux City's Gateway Airport on Thursday, Nov. 3 — just five days before Election Day, the Trump campaign announced Wednesday.Trump plans to deliver remarks in support of his effort to advance his agenda and to energize voters to support Republican candidates Trump has endorsed, including Grassley and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, the Trump campaign said.Trump's last visit to Iowa was just more than a year ago: he endorsed Grassley — to a mixed reaction from the crowd gathered at the Iowa State Fairgrounds — during a rally last October. This time, Trump will be speaking in the hometown of Mike Franken, the Democratic opponent who is running closer to Grassley than any of Grassley's previous six re-election opponents, according to polling and fundraising. A recent Mediacom/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll said Franken was within 3 percentage points of Grassley, who won his previous six re-election bids by an average of 35 points.Navigator Heartland Greenway this week became the second developer of a carbon dioxide sequestration pipeline to ask Iowa regulars to allow it to use eminent domain to force landowners to sell it easements for the underground hazardous pipeline route. In a filing Tuesday with the three-member Iowa Utilities Board, Navigator asked for a permit to build its C02 pipeline from Northwest to Southeast Iowa for 811 miles.Early this year, another CO2 pipeline developer — Summit Carbon Solutions — also asked regulators to allow it to use eminent domain to build its pipeline through 30 Iowa counties in Northern and Western Iowa, according to its permit application.Developers of CO2 pipelines stand to get billions of dollars in tax subsidies.Iowa law gives the Iowa Utilities Board authority to allow eminent domain for things like electric transmission lines and underground pipelines. To be granted this power, municipal governments or private companies must show their projects serve a public use. If the power of eminent domain is granted, a county compensation commission determines fair market value for the properties.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, March 10. It looks like the snow that was predicted for Thursday earlier in the week could be heading mostly to the south. Still, according to the National Weather Service, there will be a 30 percent chance of snow, mainly between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 28 degrees. The chance for snow will taper off even further Thursday night, with a low around 15 degrees. As a sneak peek, it looks like we'll have to deal with cold weather a few more days before bumping back up to above 50 degrees on Sunday. Kim Reynolds finally made it official Wednesday: She's running in November's election for another four-year term as Iowa's governor. The Republican governor made her re-election announcement at an event hosted by her campaign Wednesday night at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Her remarks were a mixture of her record in Iowa with criticisms of federal Democrats' policies. “As long as I am governor, Iowa will be a state where you can live your life freely, not have to wake up every morning worrying about the next thing the government will do to you, your business or your children,” Reynolds said during the rally. Iowa's first female governor, Reynolds has served in the office since 2017, initially filling the unexpired term of then-Gov. Terry Branstad, who was named U.S. ambassador to China. Reynolds ran for election to a full term in 2018, winning against Democrat businessman Fred Hubbell. Iowa reported a significant drop in new COVID-19 cases in the past week as the state enters its third year of the pandemic. The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 1,746 new coronavirus cases in the past seven days, a major decline from the 6,809 cases reported the previous week, according to data released Wednesday. This major shift comes as Iowa emerges from the omicron surge, which peaked Jan. 19 with 38,574 new cases reported in one week. The Iowa City school board this week began considering the benefits and impact a four-day school week would have on student learning, families and staff. Though the district has no plans to move to a four-day week at this time, Superintendent Matt Degner told the board at its meeting on Tuesday the idea “has the potential to create a better outcome for our students.” With a four-day school week, the school year would start earlier in August and extend to the end of June, which could lessen “summer slide” — the loss of achievements made during the school year — Degner said. The current school calendar, which begins after Aug. 23 and ends around Memorial Day in May, is “based on the old agriculture calendar,”  School board members expressed interest in the idea and some concerns, including meeting the needs of special education students and retaining hourly staff like paraeducators. The impact on child care and summer camps also must be considered, they said. Support for this news update was provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6. It's going to be a taste of spring this weekend, with a return to the cold the following week. According to the National Weather Service there will be a high near 65 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Saturday. Keeping with the spring feel, there will also be rain and thunderstorms likely, with showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 3 p.m. There will also be a chance for showers and thunderstorms Saturday night, with wind gusts as fast as 45 mph. The low will be around 31 degrees. Sunday will be colder and calmer. It is predicted to be partly sunny, with a high near 45 degrees. There could be a chance for rain and snow Sunday night, with a low around 30 degrees. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds' campaign arm is planning a “special event” that could be the official kickoff of her re-election campaign. The Reynolds campaign announced Friday it will hold a rally Wednesday at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The announcement does not say what Reynolds will talk about at the event. Reynolds, a Republican, is up for re-election this fall. She has not yet officially announced her desire to seek another four years as Iowa governor, but is widely expected to do so. This year, Democrats have just one active candidate to challenge a potential Reynolds run: Deidre DeJear, a Des Moines businesswoman who ran for Iowa secretary of state in 2018. More than 1,000 tickets have been sold for the Russian Ballet Theatre's performance of “Swan Lake” on Sunday evening at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Cedar Rapids. Michael Silva, executive director of VenuWorks of Cedar Rapids, said via email that he is “not aware of any mass refund requests” in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As a precaution against any backlash or protests, he said Cedar Rapids police will be on hand for the performance, but he does not expect there to be any disturbances. “This troupe has recently played the theaters in both Davenport and Dubuque, and we are hearing that the performance was beautiful and the messages about peace have been well received by the public,” Silva said. The Iowa Department of Public Safety is asking the Iowa Legislature for $385,000 to take the “final steps” in outfitting all Iowa State Patrol troopers with body cameras. If lawmakers approve use of the Technology Reinvestment Fund for equipment installation and licensing of software, troopers could be using the body cameras in a year, Public Safety Commissioner Stephan Bayens said. The agency that stops more than 150,000 motorists a year, provides security at the state Capitol and staffs high-profile events like RAGBRAI will benefit from body cameras, according to a briefing document prepared for the Legislature. The agency will seek competitive bids for the cameras, which cost between $600 and $1,000, and for data storage.  Support for this news update was provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. Zach Bogle started a current events wrestling outlet called Stalemates in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. With no wrestling, what else did wrestling people get to do to try to stay busy? This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, October 20. It should be another nice fall day Wednesday, with a chance for some rain in the afternoon and evening. For the most part the National Weather Service is predicting mostly sunny skies in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 71 degrees. Rain looks to be most likely between noon and 6 p.m. The low is predicted to be 48 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. Federal agents conducted a search in New Sharon on Tuesday in a firearms investigation, but the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation assisted in case there was a connection to the Xavior Harrelson death investigation. The search warrant was obtained by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for a property in New Sharon in connection with a firearms violation case. The DCI indicated they participated in the search due to the proximity to where Harrelson went missing, but this is particularly curious because investigators have not released the cause of death, yet. Last Friday, nearly five months after the 11-year-old Harrelson was reported missing from a Montezuma mobile home park where he lived with his mother, authorities confirmed that human remains found in a nearby farm field were of the boy. The drama surrounding hospitals potentially being built in North Liberty continues.  A Johnson County surgical group is posturing to sue member surgeons associated with Steindler Orthopedic Clinic, accusing them of violating a no-compete agreement by seeking state permission to build a new surgery center in what could become a new medical hub in North Liberty. Johnson County Surgical Investors made its threat — and other arguments — in a letter urging the State Health Facilities Council to deny Steindler a “certificate of need” to build a $17.9 million ambulatory surgery center on 36 acres near the Interstate 380 interchange with Forevergreen Road. Johnson County Surgical Investors and Iowa City Ambulatory Surgical Center — a 13-year-old multi-specialty center jointly owned by the Johnson County group and Mercy Hospital in Iowa City — argue the Steindler development in North Liberty is not only unnecessary but unlawful. Their arguments are tied, largely, to a relationship between Steindler and the Iowa City surgical center giving 13 Steindler physicians “active medical staff privileges” at the center — located just a half mile from where Steindler is now in Iowa City. According to the letter, because those 13 are physicians and owners of both Steindler and Johnson County Surgical Investors, they signed agreements not to own, operate, manage, finance, lease or invest in any other ambulatory surgical center in Johnson County. According to reporting in the Washington Post, Iowa authorities are investigating multiple threats — including one of lynching — that Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Ross Wilburn received soon after writing an op-ed earlier this month critical of former President Donald Trump. Wilburn wrote the opinion piece published in the Des Moines Register ahead of Trump's Oct. 9 rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. In it Wilburn accused Iowa Republicans of putting their loyalty to Trump ahead of Iowans' needs. Wilburn received two phone messages from a restricted number, and one left in his Legislature email's inbox. Only the first voicemail included a violent threat of lynching, but all three included explicit and racist language Wilburn said that while it is difficult to identify people in these cases, he intends to press charges if they are found. Iowa's Republican Senators both condemned the messages. This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, Oct. 11th. According to the National Weather Service, we can expect showers and possibly a thunderstorm today. The high will be near 65. Winds from the northeast 10 to 15 mph then from the northwest in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Rainfall amounts up to one inch are possible. Then tonight, a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10 p.m., then a slight chance of showers between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. The low should be around 52. Former President Donald Trump came to Iowa Saturday for a rally attended by thousands at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. It was his first public appearance in Iowa since just before the 2020 election. During more than two hours of remarks at Saturday night's rally, Trump showed no indication he has any intention of relinquishing his assault on those 2020 election results with his false claims of voter fraud. Early in his remarks he claimed that the election was “rigged.” Gov. Kim Reynolds, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, U.S. Reps. Ashley Hinson and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and former acting U.S. Attorney General Matt Whitaker all spoke earlier in the event. The Hawkeyes moved to No. 2 in the Associated Press Poll following their nail-biting 23-20 win over Penn State Saturday. It's their highest ranking in the AP Poll since the 1985 season when Iowa was ranked No. 1 for all of October. With 6:26 left in the game, Spencer Petras threw a touchdown pass to Nico Ragaini who, despite being hit by an Penn State linebacker, landed on the inside of an end zone pylon for the score. Many conferences and conventions lost a year at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic but very few lost two. However, that was the case for the World Pork Expo. After shutting its doors in 2019 due to concerns about African swine fever in Asia, and then canceling its 2020 event due to the pandemic, the World Pork Expo is now set to hold its event, in person, from June 9 to 11 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. The event, sponsored by the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), will consist of a trade show, educational seminars, industry updates and opportunities for networking. The guest on this week's MEAT+POULTRY podcast is Doug Fricke, director of trade show marketing at the NPPC and the World Pork Expo. Fricke described the steps that World Pork Expo organizers took to get the in-person event off the ground and how new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines were implemented to ensure the safety of all attendees and participants. He also outlined how international companies, many of which are still deciding on whether or not to travel, will be able to interact with and participate in the World Pork Expo. Fricke also explained how he handled the last two years of preparing for events and how COVID-19 will affect trade shows going forward. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/meatpoultry-podcast/message
