Digital assets are have for several years been the main growth drivers for most media owners. This is as true of TV – ITV just announced it saw 10% growth in digital revenues compared to flat overall revenue growth – as it is in publishing, as seen in the latest consumer ABC figures, as it is OOH, as it is in, of course, social media and search. So it was little surprise that, according to IAB UK's latest digital adspend report, in 2025 the UK's digital ad market grew 10% to £40.5bn pounds. It's a staggering number, especially when you consider that AA/Warc estimated the total UK ad market reached £46.9bn pounds last year.Adspend on social media grew 21% year on year to £11.5bn, even as industry leaders at both agencies and competing media owners made the case to "turn down the toxic" by divesting from social and reinvesting in more trusted media channels.Elizabeth Lane is the head of insight at IAB UK. She sat down with host Jack Benjamin her to unpack the latest adspend report, and why video in particular was a driving force for digital growth last year. The duo also discussed how AI is changing search to the detriment of publishers, what to watch out for in retail media, and why gaming and digital OOH also saw double-digit growth in 2025.Highlights:1:21: Toplines from IAB UK's 2025 Digital Adspend Report3:41: Social's pivot to video helps explain its 20% growth rate13:39: Search, retail media and gaming: disruption and missed opportunities24:06: How AI could change digital investmentRelated articles:UK adspend expected to surpass £50bn for first time in 2026High-attention media is more profitable, finds Peter Field, Lumen and NewsworksReddit looks to scale through search, performance and insightWhy audio is embracing video — with News Broadcasting's Dave Wilcox and Russell Pedrick---Visit The Media Leader for the most authoritative news analysis and comment on what's happening in commercial media. In this episode Houston legend Mike D — the man many call the original King of Lean — unpacks the true story behind codeine culture in the American South. Before “lean” was a mainstream rap flex… before double cups and purple memes… there was a street-level hustle that changed Houston forever. Mike D breaks down how promethazine with codeine went from a quiet substitute for heroin to a full-blown cultural phenomenon — influencing DJ Screw, the Screwed Up Click, and icons like Pimp C, Bun B, and Lil Wayne. What started as something passed around on the corner turned into an underground empire moving thousands of dollars a day — long before law enforcement even understood what was happening. In this interview, we cover: * How Mike D became Houston's go-to supplier * The birth of “drank” culture inside DJ Screw's house * The economics of the codeine black market * Street wars between Houston neighborhoods * Texas prison brutality and plantation-style incarceration * The real story behind Pimp C's death * Addiction, droughts, and what happens when supply dries up * How music and drugs fed off each other to build a movement This isn't just a drug story. It's a story about culture, capitalism, addiction, loyalty, betrayal — and how one underground market reshaped Southern hip-hop forever. From Astroworld fights to state prison bids… from Mercedes at 16 to moving cases of syrup… Mike D tells it all. Go Support Mike! In today's episode, Greg Burke, Assistant Professor of Accounting and Business Law at Loyola University Chicago, highlighted a key finding from his research: less than a third of crowdfunding issuers file their required annual reports on time, and fewer than half ever do.Greg explained that this lack of compliance undermines investor trust and market legitimacy. “Investors are looking for regulation crowdfunding annual reports,” he said. “Sometimes they're just not finding it. If investors are demanding it and they're not getting it, it certainly may impact their investment decisions and the potential growth in this market.”The consequences of this gap in transparency are significant. As Greg noted, compliance with annual reporting requirements provides investors with critical information to make better decisions. This transparency fosters trust, encourages repeat investments, and helps attract new capital to the space.Greg's research also uncovered ways to increase compliance. In a field experiment conducted with King's Crowd, a marketing campaign emphasized the regulatory risks of failing to comply with reporting requirements. This simple approach increased compliance by 20%. “A simple email reminder tailored towards emphasizing regulatory risk can make a difference,” Greg said.Platforms and intermediaries also play a critical role. Greg suggested that crowdfunding platforms could incorporate reporting support into their services, either by helping issuers directly or partnering with third-party providers. He noted that the process doesn't have to be costly or complicated. “There are services out there that can provide these reports for less than a thousand dollars,” Greg explained.By addressing this issue, we could unlock the full potential of regulated crowdfunding. Transparent reporting not only satisfies investor demand but also legitimizes the marketplace, opening doors for more diverse founders and innovative solutions to access much-needed capital.Improving compliance with reporting requirements might seem like a small step, but it's a foundational one. As Greg put it, “Any kind of movement in this space to increase reporting compliance only adds legitimacy to the space.”tl;dr:Greg Burke highlights low compliance with annual reporting requirements in the regulated crowdfunding market.Improved compliance fosters investor trust and market growth, benefiting entrepreneurs and diverse founders.Greg's research shows emphasizing regulatory risks can increase reporting compliance by 20%.Crowdfunding platforms and third-party services can simplify compliance for resource-constrained entrepreneurs.Greg's superpower is making complex topics relatable by tailoring messages to his audience's needs. How to Develop Making Complex Concepts Relatable As a SuperpowerGreg's superpower is making complex, seemingly dull topics engaging, relatable, and accessible. As Greg explained, “I think what I've come down to is making seemingly uninteresting, confusing, or unimportant things seem interesting, understandable, and relevant.” He emphasized that the key to this skill lies in understanding the audience, creating an engaging environment, and translating complicated ideas into relatable concepts.Illustrative Story:Greg shared an example from his classroom, where he taught students about safeguarding assets, a topic that might seem boring at first glance. By comparing company practices to personal experiences—like hiding cash from a roommate—he made the concept tangible and easy to understand. Through relatable analogies, Greg transformed a dry academic topic into a conversation his students could connect with and apply.Actionable Tips for Developing the Superpower:Know Your Audience: Understand what matters to the people you're speaking to and tailor your message.Make It Relatable: Use analogies or examples drawn from everyday life to explain complex ideas.Create an Open Environment: Foster a safe, genuine, and engaging space to encourage curiosity and interaction.Observe and Adjust: Pay attention to how people respond to your explanations and refine your approach accordingly.Be Brave: Don't be afraid to try new ways of communicating, even if it doesn't work perfectly the first time.By following Greg's example and advice, you can make “making complex concepts relatable” a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Robotics is moving quickly — from drones that deliver packages to humanoids and cobots designed to work safely alongside people. The design of systems is getting more complicated because each type of robot has its own needs for power, safety, and efficiency. We talk to Hirohisa Hori, Senior Manager, Power System Marketing at Renesas Electronics about how these problems are being solved. We look at the different ways that robots charge and use batteries, the difference between 48V and 400V motor drives, and why functional safety is becoming more important even outside of cars. We also look at the evolving landscape of communication protocols inside and outside robots, and why GaN technology is starting to play a central role in next-generation motor control.

In this episode of the Power of Zero Show, David McKnight looks at headlines, such as those from Vanguard, BlackRock or Morningstar, that have predicted a dismal forecast for stock market returns over the next decade. Since such articles predict 4-5% annual growth for the next decade, many investors are pondering whether they should take some chips off the table. Back in 2015, those same institutions and companies stressed that valuations were too high and that, since the markets had a great run, it couldn't possibly continue anymore. Vanguard forecasted 4-6% returns, BlackRock predicted 4.5-5% returns, while Research Affiliates predicted an anemic 1.5-2% returns. However, from 2015 through 2024, the S&P 500 posted a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of roughly 11.9% - proving those predictions wrong! In fact, such forecasts by stock market research institutions turned out to be off by 5-6%. David believes that financial institutions making failed predictions about the future of the stock market isn't just the exception, it's the rule. In the 2015-2024 timespan, we had a global pandemic that shut down entire economies, interest rates fell to zero, then spiked in record time, massive government stimulus, a tech boom, a crypto craze, and the rise of AI. - How many of those events could have been predicted in 2015? David doesn't recommend putting too much stock in long-term market forecasts by large financial institutions because, even if they might be well-researched, they're still guesses. For David, you shouldn't let fear drive your investment behavior. Not only should you stay invested over the next 10 years, but you should focus on investing inside tax-free accounts. Think about a balanced, comprehensive tax-fee approach that takes advantage of every nook and cranny in the IRS tax code. David refers to tools such as Roth IRAs, Roth 401(k)s, and some properly structured cash value life insurance policies like Indexed Universal Life. What drives long-term stock market returns? “It isn't predictions, emotions, or headlines, it's innovation and productivity. If you look around, you can see that those things are accelerating, not slowing down,” says David. In this episode, we're joined by Brad Crammond — a farmer near Austin, Manitoba, with a unique background as a former agronomist and retailer. Brad brings a well-rounded perspective on KWS Hybrid Rye, sharing firsthand insights from the field and from the advisory side of the business. From Agronomist to Full-Time Farmer Brad kicks things off by reflecting on what initially drew him to rye, and how his first experience with hybrid rye was a game-changer — delivering a 30 bushel per acre yield boost that caught his attention and changed the way he viewed the crop's potential. Going All-In on Hybrid Rye We explore why Brad has now committed fully to hybrid rye. It's not just about yield — Brad explains how agronomics, harvest timing, weed suppression, and marketing flexibility all factored into his decision to expand acres. Regrets and Resilience Brad shares a moment of hindsight after last fall's rye harvest, where he wished he had kept more acres. We dig into what stood out about that crop — from winter survivability to spring vigor and overall crop resilience. Advice from a Farmer & Agronomist To wrap things up, Brad offers practical, farmer-to-farmer advice for anyone still on the fence about trying hybrid rye. Drawing from both his hands-on experience and years of crop advising, he highlights what to consider when evaluating this crop for your farm. Whether you're new to rye or looking to push your yields higher, this episode is packed with field-proven insight and actionable advice. Tune in now to hear Brad's full story and why he believes hybrid rye has earned a permanent place in his crop rotation. Thanks for tuning, Tracy
Ingram Micro has suffered a significant ransomware attack attributed to the SafePay group, disrupting its systems and affecting deliveries across multiple regions. The attack, which is believed to have exploited vulnerabilities in the company's GlobalProtect virtual private network, has left its website and online ordering systems offline since July 5, 2025. SafePay claims to have accessed sensitive data, including financial information and customer records, and has demanded a ransom for data security. This incident highlights the fragility of the supply chain for IT providers, as Ingram Micro is a critical distributor relied upon by managed service providers (MSPs) and value-added resellers (VARs).The podcast also discusses the recent shift in the desktop operating system market, with Windows 11 surpassing Windows 10 in market share. Despite this milestone, the adoption of Windows 11 has been slower than its predecessor due to stringent hardware requirements and a lack of consumer interest in upgrading. While the commercial sector is expected to see an increase in shipments as businesses transition to Windows 11, the consumer market remains weak, influenced by tariffs and inflation. Microsoft is preparing to offer extended support for Windows 10, allowing organizations to continue receiving critical updates as the end of support date approaches.Flamingo has launched OpenMSP, a platform aimed at helping MSPs and managed security service providers reduce software costs through open-source tools and AI-driven margin analysis. This initiative comes as software licensing and technician salaries consume a significant portion of revenue for these service providers. Meanwhile, Cloudflare has announced measures to block AI web crawlers by default, addressing concerns over unauthorized content scraping. This move could lead to a new content licensing model for AI training, potentially creating new revenue streams for content-heavy clients. The episode concludes with a tribute to Alan D. Weinberger, the founder of the ASCII group, who recently passed away. His contributions to the IT community and the establishment of a supportive network for MSPs are recognized as significant. The podcast emphasizes the importance of community in the technology-driven business landscape and encourages listeners to consider the human aspect of the industry. Additionally, it highlights the need for robust backup solutions, such as Comet Backup, to protect against potential disruptions in the face of increasing cyber threats. ConnectWise has confirmed it was the target of a cyber attack by a nation-state threat actor, affecting a small number of its ScreenConnect customers. The company has since patched the software and implemented enhanced monitoring measures to secure its environment. This incident highlights the increasing targeting of remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools by advanced threat actors, particularly from Russian and Chinese intelligence services. The breach, occurring shortly before the IT Nation Secure Conference, raises concerns about the security of RMM tools, which are now viewed as critical infrastructure by hostile foreign actors. In the broader technology landscape, PC sales are projected to grow by 4.1% in 2025, primarily due to a temporary pause in tariffs that has encouraged manufacturers to increase shipments. However, this growth is not indicative of sustainable demand, as challenges such as rising prices and declining consumer sentiment loom. Meanwhile, U.S. smartphone sales are expected to decline due to ongoing tariffs, with the average selling price projected to rise by 4%. This situation reflects a complex interplay of market dynamics influenced by tariff policies.A global study from Kindle reveals that while 95% of organizations have adopted AI, a significant skills gap exists, with 71% of leaders believing their workforces are unprepared to leverage AI effectively. The report indicates that only 40% of leaders utilize AI-powered insights for decision-making, underscoring the need for better alignment between workforce strategies and AI technology. Additionally, the IoT Asset Tracking and Visibility Adoption Report 2025 highlights that 74% of asset tracking projects meet or exceed ROI expectations, emphasizing the importance of managed asset tracking solutions over in-house developed tools.Recent announcements from major companies like Barracuda, Red Hat, and Salesforce indicate a shift towards AI-driven solutions in the enterprise sector. Barracuda has launched an AI-powered cybersecurity platform, while Red Hat introduced AI-driven system administration tools to address the skills gap in Linux management. Salesforce's acquisition of Informatica aims to enhance its data management capabilities, further integrating AI into its offerings. These developments suggest that the focus is shifting from flashy AI features to practical applications that simplify security and enhance operational efficiency. One of the most powerful and consistent forces pushing stock prices higher over time isn't just earnings or interest rates — it's human ingenuity. From the invention of the wheel in 3500 BC, to Gutenberg's printing press in 1440, to Space Travel in 1969, and now the rise of Artificial Intelligence, innovation has been the engine of progress. And nowhere is the impact of innovation more directly reflected than in the stock market. Unlike real estate, bonds, or Treasuries, which often lag behind in capturing the upside of breakthrough ideas, stocks give investors a front-row seat to benefit from human creativity and technological advancement — especially in the innovation-rich landscape of America. In this episode, we look back at some of history's greatest breakthroughs and look forward to how emerging technologies could shape not just the world — but your portfolio. Tune in and learn how to align your investments with the most powerful force on Earth: the endless spark of human ingenuity. Here's to wise investing, Brett Pattison & Brian Hunsaker
The recent U.S.-China tariff truce has led to a significant surge in global markets, with the U.S. reducing tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30% and China lowering its tariffs on American imports from 125% to 10%. While this agreement has provided short-term relief, it has also triggered caution among Chief Information Officers (CIOs), who are now deferring IT projects and prioritizing cost management. A survey indicates that nearly two-thirds of IT leaders are focusing on cost control, with many reporting delays in discretionary IT spending, reflecting a shift from initial optimism to a more cautious approach. In the realm of artificial intelligence, the U.S. Copyright Office has issued a report warning that generative AI companies may be infringing copyright laws by using creators' works without permission. This has raised significant legal and political concerns, especially following the dismissal of the office's director shortly after the report's release. The implications for IT service providers are profound, as they must now navigate increased legal ambiguity and compliance risks related to the provenance of training data used in AI models. Moreover, a recent survey revealed that many business leaders who implemented AI-driven layoffs regret their decisions, with over half acknowledging that their choices were misguided. As organizations face a global skills shortage, experts caution against hastily reducing headcount without a strategic plan for workforce transformation. The Society for Human Resource Management reports that a significant portion of jobs is at risk of displacement due to automation, emphasizing the need for reskilling and upskilling workers in vulnerable roles. Finally, the emergence of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) marks a shift in digital marketing strategies, focusing on optimizing content for AI-driven conversational interfaces rather than traditional search engine optimization. As generative AI platforms reshape how consumers access information, businesses must adapt their content strategies to remain visible in an evolving digital landscape. This shift underscores the importance of providing tangible value in services, as consumers increasingly prioritize measurable business outcomes over ideological narratives.
