THE GREATEST STRENGTH COACH OF ALL TIME! Charles Poliquin was one of the most iconic strength and conditioning coaches of all time. He was the master behind every known Olympic athlete and coach. Unfortunately, he passed away on 27th September, 2018 because of a sudden heart attack. If you are into strength and conditioning or even weight training in general, here is a little about him that you must know. For those new to the Iron Game, Poliquin coached Olympians in two dozen sports and hundreds of elite athletes in other sports. In track and field, he worked with 2004 gold medal winners Dwight Phillips (long jump) and Adam Nelson (shot put), and in 1999 worked with Jamaican hurdler Michelle Freeman, an Olympian who now coaches at the University of Virginia. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. As a strength coach, Poliquin “talked the walk” and, spouting 19+ inch bone-crushing pythons for arms, “walked the talk!” Aside from that Charles was a father to Krystal, who is a remarkable young woman who has been kind enough to allow me the opportunity to have this conversation you are seeing today about growing up with Charles Poliquin as your dad! I never had the chance to meet him in person, however I have followed his teachings, in and out of the gym for many many years. This podcast episode was near and dear to me personally and really was honored to have this opportunity. Thank you again Krystal & Coach Eric for connecting us together and making this happen! I hope you enjoy it and if you are interested in learning more about strength training, weight loss, nutrition, or just overall health & well-being I will add the links below. We learn what it was like to be a lifter when Muscle Magazines emerged. Communities formed around shared experiences created by the stories told in magazine columns. This contemporary history would be the first battle grounds between magazine owners, athlete icons, “gurus” and training philosophies. During this era Olympic Lifting underwent changes, bodybuilding became a legitimate separate endeavour and powerlifting would also formalize. If you lift weights regularly at some point you are probably asked, "how much can you bench?" The only times that a strong bench press really matters is in strength testing for a football team (no matter what level) or in the sport of Powerlifting which tests competitors to see how much weight they can lift in the bench press, deadlift and squat. Let's face it, people who can lift lift a ton of weight will always be impressive and attract attention in the gym. Be honest, how often have you seen someone moving a bar with 6 or 8 plates and thought, "jeez, I need to get a little stronger." Silent Mike knows the Iron Game. If you are interested in strength training in general or Powerlifting in particular then you should become familiar with Silent Mike Farr, a well-known internet personality and online personal trainer who specializes in the sport of Powerlifting. Osmo is one of the most respected and knowledgeable guys in every aspect of the Iron Game. From training knowledge, to competing, to the history, Osmo is second to none. He is also my best friend in the Iron Game. I’ve been talking to Osmo regularly for around 25 years and I consider him a brother. He is my “go to guy" whenever I have a question about Iron Game History. In addition to being a true gentleman and a first class guy, Osmo ranks as pound for pound one of the strongest Iron Game Guys too. At the age of 21 years old, Osmo cleaned and jerked 418 pounds. He competed in the 1968 Senior nationals in the 198 pound class. At the age of only 21 years old, he retired from competitions. Who knows what he could have done if he kept competing for another 10 years or so. He probably would have been a world champion. Osmo is the founder and editor of THE IRON MASTER magazine which ran from 1989 to 2000. It was one of the highest quality and most informative Iron Game History magazines of all time. I’m proud to have written many articles for THE IRON MASTER. Osmo is also one of the worlds foremost experts on the history of Physical Culture and the Iron Game. Originally introduced to Brooks Kubik through his book, "Dinosaur Training", his work has had a huge impact on how I train. Brooks is a fan of pure strength along with what you might (if you were a CrossFitter) call "ultra heavy metcon."  Heavy sandbags, barrels, car pushing, farmer's walks, and as many odd lifts as you can imagine make up Brooks' routines. He's a 5 time National Champion in sub-masters bench press, so he's definitely not some armchair writer; this guy lives it. On top of all that, he's got a mind like a steel trap, and to sit back and listen to him talk about the history and connections found throughout the Iron Game is to enjoy a master at work. From Alan Calvert to Harry Paschall and from Thomas Inch up to Peary Rader, Brooks has studied and can elaborate on all the connections found throughout the marvelous sport known as the Iron Game. While most of this may be well outside your area of expertise, I think you'll enjoy the passion, enthusiasm, and commitment that comes through in every word. Enjoy!
