I'm delighted to speak with Ben Ashdown this week. Ben is joined by return guest, Dr Mustafa Sarkar. Ben is a senior lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. He is part of the Sport Performance Research Group in the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement (SHAPE) Research Centre and is a PhD researcher focusing on resilience in youth football. Ben's research interests are observational methods and assessment in sport psychology, resilience behaviours in youth football and resilience development practices. Before moving into lecturing, Ben was a research associate at The University of Nottingham on the Steps to Active Kids (STAK) project that sought to evaluate the impact of a school-based physical activity programme on outcomes including self-efficacy and obesity risk factors. Ben is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a Postgraduate diploma in teaching in the lifelong learning sector. After graduating from York St John University on a BA (Honours) degree in Sport Studies and Psychology, Ben completed an MSc in Sport Psychology at the same institution. Mustafa is Associate Professor of Sport and Performance Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. His main area of research is on individual, team and organisational resilience in elite sport. Mustafa has a background in teaching and research with most of his research focusing on the psychology of sporting and performance excellence, specifically looking at resilience in high achievers in sport and business. Mustafa also works with coaches and organisations helping them to develop resilience in athletes and teams. We talk about a brilliant paper led by Ben and co-authored by Mustafa and Dr Chris Saward and Dr Julie Johnston entitled “Exploring the behavioral indicators of resilience in professional academy youth soccer”. The study offers insight into the observable behaviours characterising resilience in youth soccer. Participants identified 36 resilience behaviours, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the concept in this specific context. The results provide a platform to support practitioners in observing resilience behaviours and structuring practices for resilience assessment and development. The findings of this study can support youth soccer players in reflecting on their behavioural responses to in-game stressors, and thus better understand how and when they demonstrate resilience.

Ongoing debates about how digital technologies impact children's health and well-being often frame sports as the opposite  or even antidote to sedentary screen time. For centuries, children's sports have served as a symbol of a “good” childhood -- one that privileges some children while historically excluding many others, especially girls, Black children, and children of colour. In this episode, Dr. Sara Grimes (Director of the KMDI) chats with Dr. Samantha White, Assistant Professor of Sport Studies at Manhattanville College (New York), about her work on children's sporting cultures at the intersection of race and gender, and how mapping the history and politics of children and sports is crucial for understanding contemporary ideas about childhood. The discussion focuses on two of Dr. White's recent articles, “Ebony Jr! and the Black Athlete: Meritocracy, Sport, and African-American Children's Media” (Journal of Sport History, 2020), and “Black Girls Swim: Race, Gender, and Embodied Aquatic Histories” (Girlhood Studies, 2021). Despite a lack of competition entering the postseason of his junior year, Devin managed to navigate a seemingly insurmountable national bracket where he was an unseeded wrestler that knocked off No. 6 seed Reece Lefever of Wabash, No. 3 seed Cole Welter of Wartburg, No. 2 seed Chris Burdge of Centenary, and No. 4 seed, Kris Krawchuk of Wilkes to capture gold. Devin is a Jackson, N.J. native and a 2010 graduate of perennial powerhouse Jackson Memorial High School. With the Jags, Biscaha was part of a contingent that was the No. 1 team in New Jersey in 2007, and consistently ranked in the top 10 in the state during his high school career. Biscaha was the first Springfield wrestler to compete in the national championship bout since John Roden was the national runner up at 174 in 2000. Biscaha became Springfield Wrestling's first ever NCAA Division III title and only second national champ in the program's long history next to Olympic gold medalist and the late Jeff Blatnick '79, who won a pair of NCAA Division II national titles at heavyweight in 1978 and 1979. After graduating from Springfield with a bachelor's degree in Movement and Sport Studies, Biscaha began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach at Powerhouse Christiansburg High School in Christiansburg, Virginia. While on staff, Biscaha helped lead Christiansburg to 3 team state titles, two team state runner-up finishes, coached 11 individual state champions that combined for 19 titles, and coached 20 state placewinners. He recently returned to his hometown of Jackson, New Jersey where he is now the head coach at Jackson Liberty High School. Following Devin's title run, Springfield finished 8th in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the 2013 Division III tournament. It was the highest team finish for the Pride since the 1998 team took seventh. Alongside Bischaha, Derek Adams and Joe Grippi wrapped up their seasons by earning All-America honors. This is the first time since 1999 that Springfield has produced three All-Americans. That year, Mike Gaydos (197-6th), Craig Vedrani (157-6th), and John Roden (174-4th) all took home the national honor. In this episode of The End of Sport Nathan and Johanna speak with Dr. Lucía Trimbur, an Associate Professor of Sociology and American Studies at John Jay College and the Graduate Center at the City University of New York and a Global Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Trimbur talked with us about her forthcoming ethnographic work about the concussion crisis in football, and interweaves insights about her past work on boxing into an absolutely fascinating conversation. In the second of a two-part show, Dr. Trimbur dives into her recent piece for Tropics of Meta on the horrific evidence showing that the NFL used the common medical practice of ‘race norming' to alter (lower) the cognitive levels of Black football players in order to argue that their cognitive functioning levels were less impaired than that of their white counterparts, in order to exclude them from being able to claim compensation from the NFL. We moreover discussed the important issue of how difficult it was for her to find a home for this important work, as the mainstream media outlets she pitched it to were—unsurprisingly—not interested in spotlighting the work. She also walked us through her understanding of the position and function of athlete activism in Trumpist America (from this piece), and the enduring power that athletes have as demonstrated by and even beyond the NBA wildcat strikes this summer, and how more athletes should be like the WNBA players. For the remainder of the episode we discussed the growth of Sport Studies as a field (which she published an academic piece on here) and the challenges that sport scholars continue to face across different fields as some non-sport academics continue to not see our work as being valuable enough to hire into their departments. The episode concludes with an honest look at Dr. Trimbur's athletic career as a D1 college athlete and the difficulties she encountered while training as a boxer for Come Out Swinging. Dr. Trimbur talked with us about her forthcoming ethnographic work about the concussion crisis in football, and interweaves insights about her past work on boxing into an absolutely fascinating conversation. In the first of a two-part episode, Dr. Trimbur walks us through her ongoing research for Lights Out: The Creation of the Concussion Crisis for Columbia University Press on the innerworkings of a football program at an un-named Ivy League school. She specifically focuses on their conversations about the concussion crisis, in terms how athletes, coaches, trainers, etc. approach the issue and calculate their daily and long-term decisions for playing the game. She also is doing research beyond the field to understand how the game, schools, and the NCAA has historically adapted to the concussion crisis in terms of rules and penalties. She moreover shared how–surprisingly to her and us—quickly the football program agreed to allow her to study them by joining their meetings, practices, games, and much more. Dr. Trimbur shared how in both her past study of Gleason's Gym for Come Out Swinging and the concussion one, people proved more than willing to share their insights and even sought out her attention and feedback at times. Stay tuned for the second part of the interview, where we talk about the harmful racial politics behind ‘race norming' in the 2015 NFL Concussion Settlement (she wrote about it here), the role of athlete-activists in Trumpist America (published about it here), the position of Sport Studies in the academy (here), and much more! Dr. Carter-Francique is also an Associate Professor in the African-American Studies Department there, doing storytelling, teaching, and elevating her role as an educator, scholar, and activist. Akilah's journey through sport participation forced her both to the sidelines at times while positioning her for a proverbial seat at many tables. Welcome back to How Do You Like It So Far?, listeners! Today, we’re bringing you a time capsule of an episode: We recorded today’s conversation back in April, but it’s still as relevant as ever. Just don’t mind us thinking the coronavirus pandemic will be over in a couple of weeks. The episode features Suzanne Scott, an assistant professor at the University of Texas Austin and author of Fake Geek Girls: Fandom, Gender, and the Convergence Culture Industry. She is also the co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Media Fandom, an anthology that brings together an international and interdisciplinary collection of nearly 60 established scholars to reflect on the state of the field and to point to new directions in fan studies research. Also on the episode is Susan Kresnicka, a cultural and business anthropologist and president and founder of cultural research firm Kresnicka Research and Insights (see their Human Needs Model whitepaper). Susan holds an M.A. in social anthropology from The University of Texas at Austin, sits on the professional advisory board for UCLA’s Master of Social Science program, and regularly speaks publicly on fandom, gender, morality, identity, and the value of anthropology in business. In the episode, Susan and Suzanne lead us through a discussion of how we define the word “fan” and who it applies to. Then, we discuss the relationship between fandom and industry: How do industry choices shape whose voices matter in fandom? How do companies strike the balance between capitalism and fan culture? Should fans be entitled to have a voice in new iterations of their favorite texts? Other topics Susan and Suzanne cover are the differences and similarities between sports fandom and entertainment fandom, how toxic fans and trolls affect fandom, and how fandom’s relationship to the industry is shifting as a result of COVID-19.   Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper: Susan’s yearlong study on fandom: The Power of FandomDegrees of Fandom: Authenticity and HierarchySuzanne’s study on repackaging fan culture and commercializationCovid-19 and FandomFandoms and virtual engagement in a time of social distancingExploring Fan Communities in Online SpacesInstagram #PassTheBrush challengeDisney+ “May the 4th” TweetsDisney Terms of Use“Fanocracy” and fandom of brands like Trader Joe’s, Southwest Airlines, etc.“Joker” Fan Art contest“A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy”Chapter 5 of Suzanne’s book (on Fan Auteurs)The Psychology of Sports FandomThe beginning of the fan movement: brief history of the first fandomsMatinee girls as the first fansThe Disjuncture between Sport Studies' and Pop Culture Studies' Perspectives on FandomAfrican American acafandom and other strangers: New genealogies of fan studiesEsports and the future of fandom“Creators of popular media are becoming increasingly wary of their fans. Do the exact numbers really matter that much or is it more of an assessment tool to track body composition? What are the limitations? 3.Do you feel that a lot of the sports nutrition recommendations gets misinterpret when it comes to physique nutrition? For example, carbohydrates and glycogen restoration? 4.Athletes are always looking for what can maximize their performance, while there is a trend in todays fitness industry of: “what’s the least you can do to get results”. What are your thoughts about this trend?
