The Paradox of the Human Condition

The Paradox of the Human Condition Episode Summary: In this thought-provoking episode of 'The Stories We Tell Ourselves,' we delve deep into the enigmatic journey that is human existence—where the very essence of our vulnerabilities and strengths are put under the microscope. Our exploration begins from the innocence of infancy, a time when love and protection seem to shield us from the looming complexities of life. Yet, it is precisely within these early moments of nurturing that the groundwork is laid for the perplexing dichotomies that we all must face. Throughout the podcast, we contemplate the poignant irony that what brings us the purest joy—love, contentment, and fulfillment—is also what renders us susceptible to the sharpest of pains: loss, grief, and disillusionment. Our innate quest for happiness is depicted as a pursuit of a mythical leprechaun, a tantalizing chase for contentment that is perpetually just out of reach. Listeners are guided through the intricate dance of positivity, a concept often championed as the panacea for life's ills. But reality bears a far more complicated landscape, with the journey to positivity riddled with obstacles, teaching us that disappointment can often feel like the only constant. The metaphoric imagery of being leaves in the unforgiving storm of existence brings to life the sense of helplessness that can arise in the face of life's unpredictable nature. 'The Paradox of the Human Condition' does not merely expose the unpredictable and often cruel aspects of life but also sets the stage for an introspective dialogue. It asks the pertinent, timeless questions about the nature of contentment and the dynamics of human resilience in the face of an indifferent universe. This episode is an invitation to contemplate the great paradoxes of life and to find meaning within them, providing a compass through the tumultuous terrain of human emotion and fate.

In this episode of Habits of the Few, Mo Naboulsi dives into the history and significance of the Iranian Revolution. With a focus on the habits of the few, Mo explores what made the Iranian people rise up against their government and how this event has shaped the modern world. Listen as we discuss the motivations of the Iranian Revolution and how it has influenced the world today. From geopolitics to human rights, this episode is packed with information that will help you understand the significance of Iran's Revolution. Don't miss it! In the aftermath of a hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi's intensified efforts to enforce Iran's Islamic laws, even more protests have taken place, this time in the streets of Tehran. The issue at hand is one that has been simmering for decades, but previous reformist leaders' promises to make changes have done nothing to stop it: women are tired of being subjugated by religious law. In Iran, the most fundamental questions about what makes a society work continue to be debated. While core human rights are being violated, many Iranians want to see change to their government's Islamic policies. --- The Islamic Republic of Iran is a country in Western Asia that is governed by a theocratic Islamic republic. The government is based on the principles of the 1979 revolution, which overthrew the previous monarchy and established an Islamic republic. The supreme leader of Iran is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who holds ultimate political and religious authority in the country. The President of Iran is responsible for the administration of the country and is elected by the people. The legal system in Iran is based on Islamic law, also known as Shariah law, which is derived from the teachings of the Qur'an and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad. The constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran states that all laws and regulations must be consistent with Islamic principles. The government of Iran is known for its strict adherence to Islamic principles and its strict control over many aspects of society, including the media, education, and personal behavior. The government has been criticized by some for its human rights record, including its treatment of women, minorities, and political dissidents. However, it is supported by many others, who view it as a guardian of the country's Islamic identity and values. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/habitsofthefew/message

How to do it all - John Malott | Ep. 52

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2022 46:32

In this episode, we talk about the concept of humility, and why it's an important trait for entrepreneurs. I think when you're building a business, if you are going to grow big and if you are going to do something that is actually going to be meaningful in the world, then you need to have a huge ego to convince people and really capture people's imaginations and your own imagination. But once things go wrong, what's amazing is that the bigger you are in your success, the quicker the comeback down. And so the true purpose in entrepreneurship is not how quickly you climb the mountain or how high you go; it's how strong you come back up after something has gone wrong. Learning that nuance between ego and humility, I think, is truly what separates amateur entrepreneurs from professionals. The reality is that we're all afraid to fail. For some reason, in our society, failure is seen as a bad thing. Success comes with so much praise, but failure? So much criticism. I get it. I was once afraid of failing just as much as anyone else. But here's the deal: when you've failed enough times, you start to realize that there's nothing special about failure. It's not the end of the world. It doesn't mean that you are a terrible person. It means that you have made a mistake. And the more you do it, the better at recognizing those mistakes and changing course before it's too late. This isn't just my opinion: there is a science behind this. Research shows that fear of failure keeps us from going as far or as fast as we're capable...and until we can accept failure and use it to our advantage, it will hold us back from bigger success! We've all been there: something annoying or frustrating happens and as a result we spend the rest of the day in a foul mood. And the additionally frustrating thing is, someone can often know they're in a bad mood, but be unable to snap out of it. The next time you get into a funk, don't just wait for the dark cloud to lift. There are steps you can take to improve your mood, and the first is to figure out what's causing it. You alone control your emotions – and that means you control how to improve your mood or when to give in to a bad one. Your mood is an emotion, which means it's a choice – and just like any other choice, you can learn how to break out of a bad mood and choose positivity over negativity. Getting out of a bad mood isn't always easy, especially if we feel that we've been wronged or disrespected, but with these six tips, it can be done. 1. Change your state Changing your physiology is the fastest way to create a breakthrough in any area of life. Take a deep breath and relax tense muscles. Throw your shoulders back. Adopt a power pose. Smile at yourself in the mirror. Get your heart going with some exercise you enjoy, which is proven to reduce stress. You'll trick your brain into getting out of a bad mood. 2. Change your focus Where focus goes, energy flows – and if you focus on the negative, that's what you'll feel. To quickly discover how to get out of a bad mood, focus on what you want to feel, rather than what you're currently feeling. To help change your focus, put on your favorite song and dance around. Watch a funny video or feed your mind with inspiring stories or quotes. Music can physically transform your brain, and humor changes your physiology. Smiling, even when you don't want to, can actually convince you that you have something to smile about. 3. Be grateful Want to know how to improve your mood? Practice gratitude. “Trade your expectations for appreciation and the world changes instantly,” Tony likes to say. When you choose to focus on the positive, you're not only able to improve your mood at the moment – you'll notice that you begin attracting more positivity, thanks to the law of attraction. 4. Use visualization Many top athletes and business people use visualization as a powerful way to manifest their goals – including learning how to get out of a bad mood. Visualization is a way to create absolute certainty within your brain and can help you shift your mood by reminding you what matters: your long-term goals, your innermost values and your hunger for an extraordinary life. 5. Meditate The benefits of meditation include reduced stress, better focus and emotional regulation – all of which can help you better unlock how to get out of a bad mood. Think you don't have time to meditate? It doesn't take long to see these benefits. A 10-minute priming routine is all it takes to refocus your brain. You can also incorporate 15 minutes of mindfulness meditation in your daily routine. 6. Get support Friends and family are invaluable. If you need a pick-me-up, call a loved one for support. They can help you talk through the problem and refocus on solutions. Strong social relationships can help you be happy in the long-term as well, so taking the time to nurture these relationships is always a good idea. Learning how to break out of a bad mood on demand will help you make better decisions, communicate more effectively, and ultimately crush your obstacles and achieve your goals. You'll be able to leave emotional baggage behind and focus on what you can control: your beliefs, your mood and your behavior. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/habitsofthefew/message

The REAL Charles Poliquin | Habits of the Few Ep. 41 Krystal Poliquin & Coach Eric

THE GREATEST STRENGTH COACH OF ALL TIME! Charles Poliquin was one of the most iconic strength and conditioning coaches of all time. He was the master behind every known Olympic athlete and coach. Unfortunately, he passed away on 27th September, 2018 because of a sudden heart attack. If you are into strength and conditioning or even weight training in general, here is a little about him that you must know. For those new to the Iron Game, Poliquin coached Olympians in two dozen sports and hundreds of elite athletes in other sports. In track and field, he worked with 2004 gold medal winners Dwight Phillips (long jump) and Adam Nelson (shot put), and in 1999 worked with Jamaican hurdler Michelle Freeman, an Olympian who now coaches at the University of Virginia. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. As a strength coach, Poliquin “talked the walk” and, spouting 19+ inch bone-crushing pythons for arms, “walked the talk!” Aside from that Charles was a father to Krystal, who is a remarkable young woman who has been kind enough to allow me the opportunity to have this conversation you are seeing today about growing up with Charles Poliquin as your dad! I never had the chance to meet him in person, however I have followed his teachings, in and out of the gym for many many years. This podcast episode was near and dear to me personally and really was honored to have this opportunity. Thank you again Krystal & Coach Eric for connecting us together and making this happen! My family is like Baskin Robbins 31 flavors spiritually, and it was during an Introduction to World Religion class at an Ivy League school that I started to consider the historical evidence that led to my new beliefs. There's an authentic daily joy in my life that is far greater than anything I imagined, and I am energized by connecting with people from all cultures and nations. My parents divorced when I was 7, and I became even more focused on academics and athletics during my teenage years. After graduating from Dartmouth College with a degree in Psychology, I was living out my childhood dream as a soccer goalkeeper. In Africa, I took a prescribed medication to prevent malaria, and it built up toxic levels in my system. I was fighting for my life for a year, and it took ten years to recover. During this time, my life was transformed in the deepest ways: identity, faith, mindset, habits, career, and relationships. The greatest blessings and growth in life can emerge from the worst situations. This is the grace of God, and the hope I want to spread. The pain in my journey has fueled a purpose in my heart to see more people experience an abundant life. After denying God's existence throughout my childhood, I never anticipated deciding to follow Jesus.

This documentary is an exploration of the strengths and fallibility of humanity through the lens of the current racial, social and political divides in the United States. With a mix of dynamic on-the-ground footage and raw authentic interviews, our project brings together perspectives that seldom reach outside their own echo chambers, shedding light on why we are so divided and why we’re struggling to understand each other through these times. The Backstory The year of 2020 has brought a myriad of struggles. Racial tensions have spurred the longest consecutive wave of protests in US history, political polarization is at an all time high, and all of this is occurring in the wake of a global pandemic. Like many, we were initially drawn to the streets in the wave of palpable outrage that swept the nation after the death of George Floyd. What began as a documentation of the subsequent protests, has unfolded into a greater search for meaning across racial, social and political lines as we began to search for answers to questions such as: How did we get here? We’ve seen these issues before, so what is different this time? If we all feel so morally right, how do we begin to communicate with one another? What happens if we don’t? Our quest to answer these questions has led to expansive exploration and meaningful discovery. Our Journey We have filmed on the ground for over 150 days of Black Lives Matter protests in Portland, amidst clouds of tear gas and other less-lethal weapons. We’ve traveled to cities such as Kenosha, Los Angeles and Chicago to explore what the same issues look like across the United States. We even found ourselves witnessing and documenting history on election night Washington DC and Philadelphia as new narratives unfolded. We’ve poured over research regarding moral and social psychology and dug into the racial history of our nation’s past. We have traveled across the country filming racial and political rallies and interviewing activists, police officers, business owners and academics all over the country. We’ve done all of this to build a multi-faceted perspective of what it means to be human amidst the racial, social and political tensions we are currently facing.

His specialization is hockey strength and conditioning. He has effectively undergone numerous internships with Charles Poliquin (founder of the PICP and world renowned Strength Coach) and Nelson Ayotte (strength and conditioning coach of the St-Louis Blues). Eric has worked with athletes of all levels, from youth sports to professionals in the NHL. ”I’ve been in the strength and conditioning field for over 15 years and I had the privilege to train people from all walks of life, from the business professional to the elite athlete. Strength training and performance nutrition has evolved well passed the usual medical and nutritional research. With the help of functional medicine and bio-signature protocols, I have great results in very short time. Bio-Signature Modulation is a revolutionary approach for losing unwanted bodyfat in specific locations. I’ve had the chance to learn from friend and renowned author/strength coach to the elite, Charles Poliquin. He has developed a system that dictates your specific hormonal profile. Imagine being able to finally rid yourself of stubborn lower body fat, or melt your love handles forever! Through Poliquin’s tested technique of hormone manipulation and diet strategies, individuals have been able to successfully shed fat in specific areas of their bodies. This theory says that each person has a unique biochemistry which means they respond differently to stress in environments as well as nutrients. This method, which measures body fat, shows what hormones need to be optimized and which supplements can be used to achieve optimal and rapid results. For example, most of my executive clientele, with their cortisol profile (stress hormone) skyrocketing, will retain bodyfat mostly around (and viscerally) the abdominal region, while female with hormonal issues will retain more fat around the hips and legs. With the help of a specific, individualized nutritional, and exercise program, results usually appear faster with an improved overall well being. I use these techniques and many others (Manual muscle testing, nutritional evaluation, First Line Therapy, Stuctural Balance) to help identify major concerns and fix them as fast as possible. While people see and feel the obvious results physically, they will also improve spiritually and mentally. I did numerous internships with Charles Poliquin and Nelson Ayotte in high performance strength training and nutritional protocols for high level athletes. In an effort to stay up to date with all the new research concerning nutrition and supplementation, I attend as many seminars as possible on those subjects, such as the Metagenics continuing educational program. A high level functional medicine and supplementation certification program. I’ve also prepared amateur and professional athlete’s such as Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.”
