What should we expect from the Philadelphia Flyers hiring Rick Tocchet to be their new head coach? We brought on longtime Vancouver Canucks podcaster and writer Jackson McDonald to answer some questions we have about Tocchet and more. King Bob is the stage name and musical project of one Jackson McDonald.Drawing inspiration from the melodic punk and alternative rock acts that dominated the late '90s and early 2000s, King Bob has established his reign as one of the most exciting new artists from Vancouver Island having played a string of sold out shows in Victoria and beyond. His debut record Rookie explores the downtrodden yet naively optimistic exploits of a man searching for meaning in the face of the absurdity of adulthood and modern life. Join His Majesty and your host James Olson as they explore the multi-generational cultural impact of Green Day, lament the loss of the Hartford Whalers, debate the merits of concept records, & more.
Games? Must we? This week we're leaving Spooktober behind us and kicking off No-Theme-ber with a bang, as King Bob frontman and Roxy Fever host Jackson McDonald returns with our second Hitchcock in just three weeks as he redeems himself by bringing a cross-country spy thriller to the table that set the template for summer thrills for everything that's come after it. Yes, it's 1959's North by Northwest, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, written by Ernest Lehman, and starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll and Martin Landau. A classic mistaken identity thriller, Hitchcock is recombining story elements from a number of spy films of his past, leaving one final stamp on the genre before turning his focus back to horror. The end result is a movie that has its fingerprints all over not just the Mission: Impossible franchise, but what we expect from blockbuster entertainment period. Plus: Jackson and JMo combine for theatrical field trips to The Wild Robot and Venom 3: The Last Dance, while Hayley's still buzzing over a visit to the Video Stop in Watrous, Saskatchewan. Listen to King Bob's new album, Rookie: linktr.ee/allhailkingbob Other works referenced in this episode include The Birds, The Stand, Longlegs, Us, Shutter Island, Malignant, The Thing, Star Wars, Fargo, High Fidelity, The Black Phone, Invitation to Hell, Casa Bonita Mi Amor, 6 Days to Air, Where We Call Home, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Vertigo, Rear Window, Secret Window, Trap, Koyaanisqatsi, Family Guy, Mad Men, Rope, Charade, Big Trouble in Little China, Total Recall, Hail Caesar!, Burn After Reading, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, The Maltese Falcon, Jaws, Rebecca, and The 39 Steps, among others. We'll be back next week as No-Theme-ber continues with the Steve Martin rom-com Roxanne, famously filmed in Nelson, BC (or at least famously in this part of the world), a selection brought to us by beloved guest Rachel Hadaway, who will be joining us for that one. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
It's the end of Spooktober... nobody trusts anybody now and we're all very tired, as we chill out with the original prince of podcasting RJ MacReady and John Carpenter's frozen freakfest takes its rightful place in the pod pantheon. It's 1982's The Thing, directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David and Donald Moffat. An absolute masterclass in the art of practical make-up and on-camera special effects, it's a movie that still looks outstanding to this day, now 42 years after it hit the screen. Critics hated the film upon its release, accusing Carpenter of only being interested in pushing the limits of technical achievement, and slacking on character and story. While I'd take issue with the latter critique, the former is exactly what has made the movie an enduring favourite. As for its story, this is a scenario so rife with paranoia that it has since gone on to become a successful board game. Sadly, The Thing is not available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but you can nab it on Blu-ray for $5 most places and it's well worth owning on physical media. Other works discussed in this episode include the Venom franchise, Invaders From Mars, Poltergeist, Transformers, Lover, Stalker, Killer, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, Paranormal Activity 2, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Poltergeist III, Truth or Dare (2017), Death Becomes Her, Gladiator II, The X-Files, Lost, Severance, Clear and Present Danger, and Escape From New York. We'll be back next week to kick off No-Theme-ber, a lawless month where anything goes, as Roxy Fever's Jackson McDonald returns to the show with a redemption pick from his own collection, and to promote the new King Bob album Rookie available now wherever you get your music. He's making us circle back to Hitchcock with a classic mistaken identity thriller, 1959's North by Northwest, with Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

On this episode of the podcast… Jackson McDonald joins the show from the FIU Football Stadium! The Panthers tight end from the Keys shares some stories with Jake, Kevin and Jonny!
Over the last two seasons, the Putnam County baseball teams have been expecting and performing great seasons. We spoke with Chris Newsome (51:37) after the 2022 season and about fall baseball as the football coop with Hall has halted the 2023 fall, now-graduated Andrew Pyszka (1:21:43) after the 2022 season, and Jackson McDonald (1:35.55) a week before the 2023 postseason.Intro: R.I.P.s (3:55, Terry Funk, Bray Wyatt, Bob Barker), Win/Lose/Stat (11:10, scores, stats, accomplishments from 8-21 to 8-28)
Waka waka! Steve Martin Month continues as this week we welcome Jackson McDonald (Roxy Fever, History Lesson: Part II) back to the program to discuss a pair of movies that are actually good, as we get movin' right along into 1979's The Muppet Movie, directed by James Frawley, and starring Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Charles Durning, Austin Pendleton, and a long list of cameo appearances including Edgar Bergen, Mel Brooks and of course, Steve Martin. While it's not officially the movie of the week, we also spend a great deal of time talking about 1981's The Great Muppet Caper, which sees last week's standout star Charles Grodin give an all-timer performance opposite Ms. Piggy. Two delightful films that make for a lively discussion on the unsolvable puzzles of Henson's puppetry. We've also got Theatre Reports on Oppenheimer and Last Voyage of the Demeter, and continue to shake our heads in disbelief that Prey never got a run in theaters, while J Mo, Hayley and Jackson are all fixated on music in the dog days of summer. If you'd like to watch The Muppet Movie or The Great Muppet Caper before listening along, they are both available for streaming on Disney+ and come strongly recommended. We'll be back next week to wrap up Steve Martin Month with 1999's Bowfinger, directed by Muppet maven Frank Oz, and ponder whether it is worthy to be inducted into the ADHD-DVD podcast canon. See you then!
This week, we're joined by a guest for the very first time, which is exciting! Unfortunately they have brought with them an unwatched DVD from their own collection which was excrutiating! JACKSON McDONALD (Roxy Fever) guides us back into bio-pics with a movie that at times feels like a made-for-TV Ray, 2009's Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Kimberly Elise, and Aunjanue Ellis. It's a movie Jackson believes found its way onto his shelf via his father-in-law, and it's not something we recommend anyone watch before listening along. You can hear more of Jackson's film takes on his own movie podcast, History Lesson: Part II with co-host Tyler Shipley. If you're a complete masochist who does want to see the movie before listening to the podcast, Gifted Hands is currently streaming on Netflix Canada at the time of publication. We'll be back next week with Ben Affleck in The Accountant.
This week, we're back with a belated 4/20 celebration, watching the movie who's own early 90s marketing campaign encouraged filmgoers to "watch it with a bud", Richard Linklater's 1993 high school classic DAZED AND CONFUSED. This one is a Hayley Hasn't Seen, despite the fact she's owned it for roughly 13 years without ever popping it in the player, and perhaps the movie's stoner reputation scared her away as someone who does not partake. But before we can get into a certified five-star classic, we must take the opportunity to gush about another film some are saying that could also describe, and that's John Wick: Chapter 4, which we should be free to talk about now because if you really wanted to see it at this point and haven't, like... what is your problem? Come back next week when we're joined by guest Jackson McDonald for a recap of the absolutely horrendous made-for-TV biopic, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story. And as always, special thanks to Eastman Presser for our music and Sydney Beaudin for our cover art.
Jackson McDonald (Roxy Fever) joins the show and tells us the SHOCKING TRUTH about what happened with Boudreau this season. Samso Insight Episode 100: As we progress to a world of clean energy and a No Emission life, the hard path of implementation begins. The hard apart of all the conversation of decarbonisation and a perfect world of less carbon, less emission to no carbon and no emission is the implementation of some real world details. In this episode we have Matthew Bowen and Adel van der Walt from Jackson McDonald and Joe Wyder from DMIRS speaking with Tony Goode. Matthew and Adel share with us their experience in this sector which seems to be a world of smoke and mirrors. The average citizen of the world seem to have an opinion on the clean world. However, they seem to lack the understanding of how that will work in practice. When we talk about the mining sector, there are so many parameters that needs to be considered. Most importantly, mining is a business and if there are no profits, then there will be no mining. This discussion is all about how we are going to have clean energy for mining and how all proponents of this industry must work together to have best practice. There are some real working examples of cleaner energy and this was discussed and discussed as shown in the image below. The example from King Island and Rottnest Island are prime example of how important hybrid power systems are to the clean energy process. One interesting message that came from this episode is that clean mining will consume more energy. Those people that want clean mining need to understand that to achieve the clean power world, there is a need for more mining. More clean mining means more energy will be consumed. Make sure you have a good cup of your favorite beverage and check in on this episode of Samso Insights. AS stale as you may think the heading is, as you watch the episode, you will begin to get engrossed with this stimulating concept of implementing the decarbonisation process. Chapters: 00:00 Start 00:20 Introduction 03:05 The state of the clean world status. 07:17 Why do we Decarbonise?. 03:18 Changing of mindsets. 14:10 How does the Decarbonisation process look? 15:55 Carbon Consumption - The Business of Mining. 21:41 Clean Mining will consume more power. 22:21 Small Vehicle Fleet on Alternative Fuel 23:43 NASA testing alternative fuel options. 24:25 Is hydrogen cells for the big trucks? 24:57 The birth of hybrids. 25:32 Difficulties of hydrogen. 26:01 Alternative fuel will determine Mine Design. 27:08 The issue with Lithium ion batteries. 28:06 State Government Hydrogen Committee 32:02 The coming of the Mineral Revolution. 33:39 The Purchase Agreement. 35:21 DMIRS New Implementation supporting Decarbonisation. 39:29 Resources provided by DMIRS. 40:54 Jackson McDonald contribution to the Power Agreement templates. 43:38 Agreements are made form the miners perspective. 51:28 The impacts and opportunities for Indigenous communities. 52:36 Challenges of Hybrid vs Conventional power generators. 53:51 Opportunities to help indigenous communities. 54:50 The wealth creation opportunities from the renewable energy space. 57:51 Concluding comments from Matthew Bowen 01:00:20 Conclusion
Jackson (Roxy Fever, @failsonmcdonald) is back on the pod and he brought along Minutemen's classic "Double Nickels on the Dime" for us to talk about. Outside of the album, it's about the Vancouver Canucks, listening to bands that get straight to the point, and just enjoying the good stuff.
Clowns, we finally made it to the Season 1 finale! In a much-delayed episode, we stray further and further from the Lord's light. Of course our hosts' hungry minds immediately jump to food, as we discuss struggle meals, the Saweetie meal, and which celebrity we think would have the best McDonald's meal. Then, one host makes a dangerous detour into the world of human fluids; we can already hear the audience booing him from home. Per usual, we meander around the world of music, bouncing from BTS to Lizzo to Normani to Cardi to Nicki to #FreeBritney. Finally, we take a trip down memory lane and reminisce on our favorite moments of Season 1. Keep those throwing arms loose, because Season 2 is right around the corner! • Want us to answer your question on air? Join Georgia and guest Jackson McDonald to discuss Fredrik Backman's 2017 book "Beartown" and its recent HBO adaptation. Get Paid Quick (GPQ)!! What are your options for prompt payment? Hear from Thomas Jacobs about adjudication and how GPQ can help you in the event of a payment dispute. This is the first of podcast series that we are doing with Jackson McDonald - one of WA's largest law firms - where we will cover a range of topics that relate to small-medium trade based businesses and how they can protect themselves. We all know cashflow is the lifeblood of the tradies' business. Hopefully – all your customers will always pay your invoices in full, and on time. But sometimes disputes can arise. And if you cannot collect your cash quickly and efficiently, your business could soon be in trouble – not to mention the stress it causes. But did you know that there is a rapid, cheap way to enforce payment of your invoices without having to go to court? It is called adjudication – and its available to anyone who does work under a construction contract. Jackson McDonald has made the process of preparing an adjudication application really easy – with its online app - Get Paid Quick (GPQ).All that is involved is you answer a series of simple questions and upload your contract and invoice in the comfort of your home. The programme prepares a draft application which is then settled by lawyers – and they only proceed to take action if they think you will win. The real advantage of the adjudication process is its speed – you can get a decision confirming that the debt is due within 1 month of launching (which is much quicker than going through court or arbitration). Join Tom Jacobs of Jackson McDonald as he walks you through the adjudication process – and how the GPQ app can help you get paid.”https://www.getpaidquick.com.au/https://www.jacmac.com.au

With Game 3 set to go early in the morning on Thursday and having had a few too many margs to bring you a post-game show after Game 2, Justin returns to Tuesday's conversation with Jackson McDonald (Roxy Fever, Daily Hive Offside) for a little overtime, on a topic sure to rankle just as many listeners as its subject did in his on-ice days as a Canuck. Ryan Kesler tweeted his support of Donald Trump over the weekend, irritating many Canucks fans who were trying to like him again. Justin makes the case that Kesler's off-ice behaviour has never mattered, and even with bad politics, he's still unquestionably one of the greatest Canucks of all time.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Ahead of Tuesday's Game 2 between the Canucks and Wild, Justin catches up with Jackson McDonald (Roxy Fever, Daily Hive's Offside) to settle a bet, try and find space for Jake Virtanen and Loui Eriksson in the Vancouver lineup, and ponder the distinct lack of buzz around the Canucks as a "playoff team" among the faithful.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! I love the 2011 Canucks run as much as anyone, but it's time to put the retrospectives and game rewinds on pause for now. Jackson McDonald the (almost former) Managing Editor of Canucks Army and co-host of Roxy Fever joins the podcast to talk the Canucks roster building strategy, Canucks rumours he decided to drop, life under quarantine, and Henrik's Hart Trophy winning season. We also discuss the album Abbey Road by The Beatles, and why watching The Last Dance reminded me of it. Follow us on Twitter, @powerofthetowel and @nickbondi. Learn more about your ad choices. The first returning guest in Locked On Canucks history, CanucksArmy managing editor JACKSON McDONALD returns to the show to talk Horvat's even-strength struggles, if J.T. Miller was worth a first round pick, Tyler Myers strong start, the underrated contributions of Josh Leivo, and Sven Baertschi's return to the NHL. Recorded this morning ahead of Vancouver's 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils, though much of what we said proved shockingly prescient. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on the show that’s still grieving, I reflect a bit on the takeaway lessons of Jason Botchford’s friendship and incredible professional impact, and how I feel changed personally and professionally since his passing. I wanted to put together a tribute show this week collecting stories from people who knew him like I did, and people who knew him better than me. But the timing didn’t feel quite right to do that. I couldn’t bring myself to do it, anyway. Not yet. But I did share my own stories of the man and the way he helped me with CHRIS FABER of CanucksArmy on his podcast, and with his permission have republished that conversation in full with my own introduction. I strongly recommend Faber’s full podcast, talking with Georgia Twiss, myself, Jackson McDonald, J.D. Burke, Harman Dayal, Clay Imoo, Cory Hergott and Ryan Biech. It runs over 5 hours and is as cathartic as it is heart-wrenching. You can find it by searching for Canucks Conversation wherever you get your podcasts. I want to thank Chris for getting me going and allowing me to spill these stories at a time when I did not feel up to talking to anyone about anything. The kid can interview. This week, it’s the return. The show is back with brand new material, as CanucksArmy’s JACKSON McDONALD joins Justin to talk the Canucks’ deployment of Nikolay Goldobin, the on-going war over the Russian winger between rabid factions on either side, the maturation of Jake Virtanen, and more. But beyond Canucks talk, they also get into OHL’s hazing controversy, and what it reveals about labour needs and unionization in the CHL — and an article of Jackson’s that was read on the floor of Ontario’s provincial parliament.
