Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and ages and genders.. On the last weekend in February each year over 2000 heroes take to the water in Perth, Western Australia to swim the 19.7 kilometers from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island. Highly regarded worldwide and one of Western Australia's iconic events, the South32 Rottnest Channel Swim is a 19.7km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach (Mudurup) to Rottnest Island (Wadjemup). The Rottnest Channel Swim is not only a challenge in fitness, mental toughness and ability – but a challenge in managing your mind as well. In this podcast I share just some of the stories of people I know in my Podsquad North Cottesloe swimming group who did incredible things to discover just how much resilience, how much stamina, how much courage and how much tenacity they really had. It was a magical day with incredible stories coming out of it. It made me think of David Bowie's wonderful song - Heroes. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2442: Rock parrot Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 11 January 2024 is Rock parrot. The rock parrot (Neophema petrophila) is a species of grass parrot native to Australia. Described by John Gould in 1841, it is a small parrot 22 to 24 cm (8+3⁄4 to 9+1⁄2 in) long and weighing 50–60 g (1+3⁄4–2 oz) with predominantly olive-brown upperparts and more yellowish underparts. Its head is olive with light blue forecheeks and lores, and a dark blue frontal band line across the crown with lighter blue above and below. The sexes are similar in appearance, although the female tends to have a duller frontal band and less blue on the face. Two subspecies are recognised.Rocky islands and coastal dune areas are the preferred habitats for this species, which is found from Lake Alexandrina in southeastern South Australia westwards across coastal South and Western Australia to Shark Bay. Unlike other grass parrots, it nests in burrows or rocky crevices mostly on offshore islands such as Rottnest Island. Seeds of grasses and succulent plants form the bulk of its diet. The species has suffered in the face of feral mammals; although its population is declining, it is considered to be a least-concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:35 UTC on Thursday, 11 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Rock parrot on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Geraint Standard.

In 1977, we sent a Golden Record of the sounds of Earth into space with NASA's Voyager probes. This 'cosmic' calling card inspired the program team to make this - a golden record of Australian sounds. It varies from Nature Track - there are human made sounds and there are human voices, these soundscapes are layered sounds from all over Australia - they're not natural soundscapes. To create the soundscape for our vinyl record - our teams recorded over 200 bespoke sounds - many of which have been arranged into the final composition.  Sounds were gathered from as far as the Perth Canyon (20km west coast of Rottnest Island) and as remote as Warramunga in the Northern Territory. Kate Adie introduces correspondents' dispatches from South Sudan, from the air war over Ukraine, a troubled area of Chicago, a small island off Western Australia and Sweden's capital, Stockholm. The conflict in Sudan which began in April continues to tear its capital city, Khartoum, apart. Hundreds have been killed and more than a million people have fled their homes. Some have connections to South Sudan - which split from Sudan in 2011. Catherine Byaruhanga has been to the South Sudanese town of Renk and heard from families who've managed to return. After attending the G7 summit in Japan, Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, tweeted that peace was 'closer today'. One tangible outcome of the meeting was the promise from President Biden that the US would allow countries to supply F16 fighter jets to Ukraine - something President Zelensky has been requesting for months. But just how will these jets help? Our correspondent Abdujalil Abdurasulov talked to two Ukrainian fighter pilots. Chicago has a new mayor. At his swearing-in, Brandon Johnson - a former teacher and union organiser - spoke proudly of his humble beginnings in one of the most violent neighbourhoods in the Americas. He continues to live in Austin, Chicago and has promised to take a new approach to fighting crime. Mike Wendling has been to the mayor's neighbourhood to see how data science is being used to tackle the city's gun violence problem. Visitors to Western Australia's Rottnest Island have only recently begun to discover the island's hidden, tragic past. While many tourists come to the island to see the quokkas, cute marsupials with happy grins, more and more of them, like Emma Thomson, are learning about the historic mistreatment of its indigenous people, the Wadjemup. And in Sweden, Rob Crossan takes a walk around an area of Stockholm that has always fascinated him - and meets a homeless man who asks why anyone should be destitute in a country which is often celebrated as a showcase for the best in humanity.

After that, Greg and Eric field a number of questions from listeners, covering a range of topics including the relationship between exercise variety and hypertrophy, how to train for greater bone density, what acute protein synthesis studies can (or can't) tell us about eating to maximize hypertrophy, and whether or not you need to balance “pushing” and “pulling” volume to keep your shoulders healthy and pain-free.
