On today's episode – a bit of politics, a tinge of history, a dab of fiction, and a whole lot of love. We're in conversation with actor, producer, and bestselling author James Brandon about his new book The Edge of Being – a story about being young, queer, and searching for the role of fathers and identity. The book is a tender and heartfelt queer young adult novel about the multiplicities of grief, deeply held family secrets, and finding new love – within the political context of San Francisco's Compton's Cafeteria Riots, a queer rebellious event that occurred on the West Coast prior to New York's Stonewall rebellions. Brandon also produced and played the central role in the internationally acclaimed tour of Terrence McNally's Corpus Cristi for over a decade. He is co-director of the documentary film based on that journey. He is the co-founder the I AM Love Campaign and currently serves on the Board for Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits (BAAITS) in San Francisco. The Grumbleweeds story began in Leeds in 1962, when the group was first formed by Robin Colvill.  They spent the next few years undertaking the usual round of clubs and pubs in their native Yorkshire and overseas engagements in German, playing alongside bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and many others.  They turned fully professional in 1967, following an appearance on BBC TV's 'Opportunity Knocks' – an early version of today's X Factor show. They went on to appear on the show 'Max Bygraves Meets New Faces', courtesy of Johnny Hamp, who nearly 20 years later masterminded their popular TV series, ambiguously titled 'The Grumbleweeds Radio Show'In 2013, Robin was joined by his close friend and first-class actor, singer and comedian James Brandon, James, himself a stand-up comic, took the role of straight man to Robin's hapless idiot.  Interestingly, it is the first-time in the history of comedy that the straight man has switched places to take on the role of the clown in the act. Their first appearance as the new act was in 'Aladdin' at Hull's New Theatre. To say their performance was a success is a vast understatement, heralded by their peers as even funnier than before. There are very few acts in the history of UK comedy that can stand the test of time and who can boast such a proud theatrical history as The Grumbleweeds.Listen to Robin Colvill telling his own story of Juke Boxes to the height of Television Success.

I listen to a lot of podcasts that span a multitude of genres including comedy, politics, and, of course, photography. Regardless of the show, there is a common element to my favorite episodes. When the host and guest(s) dive deep with some real stuff—I’m talking about authentic, personal, and raw conversation—that’s when I find myself glued to the speakers. The show could go on for three hours and I’d still be there listening. That’s how I feel about this episode. I’m lucky to be joined by my longtime friend, James Brandon, to discuss not only what led him to become a professional photographer, but what made him realize that he wanted to leave that life behind. I suspect that a lot of what he says may resonate with some of you. It certainly did with me. I hope you enjoy this one!
