In Job 12 we have a continuation of his response to Zophar. This chapter tells us Job accepts that all that has happened to him is from the Almighty (Shaddai - a Hebrew word which expresses two different aspects of God's character - it means "the destroyers" and also, "the nourishers"). In chapter 42verses11 we are told that Job's suffering was from God. Job starts chapter 12 with supreme sarcasm, "No doubt you (my 3 friends) are the people, and wisdom will die with you" ESV verse 1; i.e. you're know-alls so why should I, Job, bother talking to you. Can't you see the wicked also prospering, he contends. In verse 10 we have another Hebrew parallelism i.e. the first expression meaningfully correlates to the second - the life of the beasts equates to the breath of humanity (Ecclesiastes 3verses19). Nahum was an Elkoshite from the southern kingdom of Judah. His name means "comfort" (a similar idea to the "parakletos" - Comforter of the New Testament). Jesus made Capernaum (city of comfort, or consolation) his base of operations in Galilee. The comfort of the prophecy of Nahum was that Judah's oppressor would be dealt with by the Almighty. The book was written between 624 AD and 612 AD when Nineveh was overthrown by Babylon. As Egyptian power declined from the middle of the 7th century BC Assyria rose to prominence. Firstly, Nineveh and then Babylon assumed the dominant position in the threatening Assyrian development. Then in 612 BC Babylon conquered Nineveh and she no longer had a rival. Judah rejoiced for although the Babylonians, who God would bring against them in His chastisement, were exceedingly cruel they were more humane than their Ninevite brothers. Chapter 1 of Nahum deals with the Almighty's wrath against Nineveh. Verse 2 describes God's jealousy - Nineveh had been the nation who had brought the LORD's punishment upon God's guilty people. But the Assyrians had delighted in the cruelty meted out on Israel. Israel's Sovereign demonstrated His power over nature. When Yahweh is aroused to judge who can withstand His might. But after chastisement has been given our Potentate will compassionately pardon His people and destroy their oppressors. Chapter 2 details the destruction of Nineveh. All of Nineveh's powerful defenders and defences would be useless against the coming Babylonian onslaught. The panic within Nineveh is graphically portrayed. Colourful and emotional language describes the chaos experienced by the Ninevites. The den of the former ravening lion has itself become plundered. James 5 concludes this letter from the half-brother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Verses 1-6 contain a warning to the rich. We remember that in chapter 2 the poor were showing favour to their rich oppressors but, as chapter 5 tells us, the time of reckoning had arrived. The soldiers of Rome, who had encircled Jerusalem in 70 AD, had heard that the rich had swallowed their gems in an attempt to escape with some of their wealth. So, when the fleeing rich (identified by their fatter flesh) fled they were opened up to see what wealth they had swallowed. Accumulated wealth in any form other than faithful and charitable works of love is useless, worthless and may in fact witness against us having been faithful servants of Christ. Verse 4 is a reference to the Law of Moses (Leviticus 19verses13; see also Jeremiah 22verses13; Malachi 3verses5). The field day labourers were having their wages held back overnight by the wealthy landowners, which God detested. The powerful would find opposition from Yahweh Tz'vaoth - He whose omnipotent power is with the host of heaven. The time to account for their self-indulgent apathy had come. They, verse 6, had condemned and murdered the righteous Lord Jesus Christ, who as he taught them had not resisted. James also according to history was clubbed to death by the Jews, who called him "James the just". Verses 7-12 speak of patience in suffering. Verse 7 is certainly the key to daily living. The farmer must patiently await for God to give him a crop. Grumble not and judge not, for our Judge is at the door (Acts 17verses31). The prophets and especially Job suffered long under trial. Let this console all believers in patiently enduring suffering whilst praying earnestly for the kingdom for which we long. We must always be true to our word - an oath adds no validity (Matthew 6verses36-37). Verses 13-19 deal with the prayer of faith. These verses contain five prayers. How significant it is that that this letter stresses the importance of prayer in the life of a believer. "Prayer", said brother Harry Tennant, "is not the spare wheel in the boot of the car - for use when an emergency arises - it is the steering wheel that directs our life". There were in the first century believers who had been afflicted with sickness as a consequence of their wayward behaviour. Repentance and prayer were the key to their recovery. If we have a friend who is a close confidant who can keep the matter undisclosed, they may be able to help us through a trauma (see Galatians 6verses1-3). Consider the example of persistence in prayer until resolving the pressing problem that was demonstrated in Elijah's life (1 Kings 18verses41-46). God has given each one of us the responsibility to help one another to the kingdom. Our passage this morning covers both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Why we should be thankful, instead of complaining. You have so much to be thankful for!
QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Hell begins with a grumbling mood, always complaining, always blaming others.”~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) in his book The Great Divorce “Grumbling is the death of love.”~Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992), German-American actress “Bless you, prison! Bless you for being in my life. For there I came to realize that the object of life is not prosperity, as we are used to thinking, but the soul's work.”~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2007), Russian writer of his time in a Soviet gulag “Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses.”~Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (1808-1890), French critic and novelist “Let us be ashamed of our slowness in thanking God when He gives, and of our quickness in grumbling at Him when He takes away.”~Nikolaj Velimirovic (1880-1956), Servian Orthodox prelate, imprisoned by the Nazis “Let me clear up something...God is not against you having things. He's against things having you.”~Voddie Baucham (1969-2025), pastor and writer “Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin, and an antiseptic.”~John Henry Jowett (1863-1923), British minister and preacher “What the Lord wants is that you shall go about the business to which He sets you, not asking for an easy post, nor grumbling at a hard one.”~Catherine Booth (1829-1890), co-founder of The Salvation Army “Thankfulness is a flower which will never bloom well except upon a root of deep humility.”~J.C. Ryle (1816-1900), Anglican bishop of Liverpool “Praise is the rehearsal of our eternal song. By grace we learn to sing, and in glory we continue to sing. What will some of you do when you get to heaven, if you go on grumbling all the way? Do not hope to get to heaven in that style. But now begin to bless the name of the Lord.”~Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), famed London preacherSERMON PASSAGEPhilippians 2:12-18 (ESV)Philippians 2 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. Philippians 1 12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. 16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. 27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Why This Episode Matters:DJ Grumble's story flips the myth of the “tortured full-time artist” on its head. A medicinal chemist by training, he treats his beat-making with the same rigor as a lab experiment, balancing structure and spontaneity while managing a startup, research deadlines, and a thriving music catalog. His journey shows that creativity and discipline aren't opposites; they're two sides of the same molecule.Explore the Stories Behind the BeatsLove diving into the stories behind the beats? The sinners flock to listen to Jesus. Why do the Pharisees grumble about this? Dr. Chris Croghan teaches us that what they hold important is the law, and it isn't working the way they want it to work. You grumble because you're not getting your way. Then Jesus tells a parable about the shepherd leaving the 99 to find the one lost sheep and the woman searching for her lost coin. Dr. Croghan explains how this is a depiction of how God tracks down those who he calls his own. CARE OF SOULS - ADDICTIONIn Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those struggling with life's challenging situations: addiction, death, family disharmony, and more. Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders. With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the broken places of addiction not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ.Because in the end, it's not about fixing people—it's about preaching the Gospel.Listen to Care of Souls wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Luther House website: Care of Souls - AddictionSING TO THE LORD Martin Luther said, "Next to the word of God, the art of music is the greatest treasure in the world." To understand the importance of hymnody in the Lutheran church, Lars Olson and Mason Van Essen sit down with Zachary Brockhoff to discuss the lectionary's hymns, their meaning and history, and how the music preaches the Gospel.
Bit dramatic? I was hoping to say this after a playoff final win rather than the current mess, but I've decided to call time on the podcast. It's something I've been weighing up for a while and, to be honest, it's an acknowledgement that my heart's just not in it quite as much as it used to be. Which, if I'm being blunt, you may have noticed at points last season. I started BladesPod eight years ago, which seems a long time to do anything really. My goal was to be something a little more “considered” than eg Praise or Grumble football phone-in style content, with fairly chill takes rather than clickbaity sensationalism. I hope that BladesPod has lived up to that in the main, but I'm now at a stage of life where United aren't at the front of my mind anywhere near as much. Rather than put out something a bit rubbish or half-hearted, I think it's just time to hang up the mic. I've hugely, hugely enjoyed my time recording and putting these podcasts out there, and the (generally!) good-natured feedback they've generated, even when it's a difference of opinion. Above all it's through this podcast that I've made some genuine friendships and met a load of people I don't believe I'd ever have crossed paths with otherwise. As the pod's lifetime has overlapped with me becoming a parent – not to mention living through a global pandemic – I can't overstate how useful it's been for my own mental health. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who's ever taken the time to record with me – Anna, Dave, Hal, and all the guest fans of other teams who I've ever had on, back when I had a bit more enthusiasm. To Jay, without whom I don't think I'd have carried on going for this long: a man who was my gateway into football analytics as well as giving the enthusiasm and self-belief that we were doing something worth ours' and other people's time. It's been awesome to see him find an amazing career in the game he devoted so much of his spare time to – one of the hardest-working people I've ever encountered. And of course, a huge thanks to Andrew – someone I'd never met or even spoken to before we recorded an episode together for the first time, and now probably a person I speak to more often than anyone who doesn't share my surname. An absolute pleasure to record all those episodes with you – six years! – and the one thing that's made me put off finishing the podcast for the last year or two. A legend of the Lane. Finally, a thank you to anyone who's ever listened to the pod or otherwise interacted with me on social media etc. It was only because there appeared to be any audience for this at all that I kept doing it beyond the first amateurish episode. I really do appreciate that that audience continued right up to this day, and I hope you got at least some enjoyment out of the pod during its run. I'll still be writing about Sheffield United Women on my newsletter WOMEN OF STEEL (http://womenofsteel.substack.com), and hopefully will keep writing about the men's team for the Pinch and anywhere else that will accept a few words from me when they come to mind. But for now, that's all folks. Thanks again for listening to us. UTB, Ben
Send us a textHow do you talk to people about God? Those conversations in my experience typically end up not productive. Maybe that means we're doing it wrong. Perhaps we're all talk and no show. What is God's form of evangelism that is presented in the Bible? We are called to be sincere seekers of God. Not just with lip service. The instruction of Christ is to be changed into a new person. With that change comes a renewing of your mind. Ultimately, the end goal is to become the best person you can be. You cannot achieve it alone, you have to have the example of Jesus to follow. What do we learn of Jesus's interactions in the form of His evangelism? He not only taught wisdom and instructed after righteousness, but He was the prime example of how to live and be one with God. Grumble in your work? Unhappy with a change at home? Lost your job? Your dream job making you upset at life? To be changed into a person of content is where happiness and perseverance reside. Life will bring seasons of testing, just as it did for Israel in the wilderness and for Jesus in the desert. Groaning before God is an honest expression of our need, but grumbling reveals distrust in His provision. This message challenges us to bring our struggles to the Lord in faith rather than complaint, trusting His goodness even in the hardest trials.

James 5 concludes this letter from the half brother of our Lord Jesus Christ. So when the fleeing rich (identified by their fatter flesh) fled they were opened up to see what wealth they had swallowed. Accumulated wealth in any form other than faithful and charitable works of love is useless, worthless and may in fact witness against us having been faithful servants of Christ. Verse 4 is a reference to the Law of Moses (Leviticus 19:13; see also Jeremiah 22verse 13; Malachi 3 verse 5). The field day labourers were having their wages held back overnight by the wealthy land owners, which God detested. The powerful would find opposition from Yahweh Tz'vaoth - He whose omnipotent power is with the host of heaven. The time to account for their self indulgent apathy had come. They, verse 6, had condemned and murdered the righteous Lord Jesus Christ; who as he taught them had not resisted. James also according to history was clubbed to death by the Jews, who called him "James the just". Verses 7-12 speak of patience in suffering. Verse 7 is certainly the key to daily living. The farmer must patiently await for God to give him a crop. Grumble not and judge not, for our Judge is at the door (Acts 17 verse 31). The prophets and especially Job suffered long under trial. Let this console all believers in patiently enduring suffering whilst praying earnestly for the kingdom for which we long. We must always be true to our word - an oath adds no validity (Matthew 6verses 36-37). If we have a friend who is a close confidant that can keep the matter undisclosed, they may be able to help us through a trauma (see Galatians 6 verses 1-3). Consider the example of persistence in prayer until resolving the pressing problem that was demonstrated in Elijah's life (1 Kings 18 verses 41-46). God has given each one of us the responsibility to help one another to the kingdom.
When we talk about acting tools, we usually mention headshots, reels, technique, or coaching. But punctuation? Not so much. And yet, punctuation—something you probably haven't questioned since middle school—might be interfering with your most natural, honest performances. The Problem Most Actors Don't Know They Have You get a script. Maybe it's commercial copy, maybe it's a scene. And without realizing it, your brain starts obeying the punctuation. Comma. Small pause. Period. Full stop, drop your pitch. Exclamation mark. Boost the energy, punch the line. Your body responds to those tiny marks automatically. But here's the thing: those cues might not match what your character is actually feeling. They might even contradict the emotional truth of the scene. If you've ever given a read that felt stiff, too “correct,” or like something was missing… this might be why. Why Punctuation Feels Helpful (But Can Hurt) Punctuation is meant to clarify meaning in writing. It's useful when you're reading silently or trying to follow someone else's train of thought. But acting isn't silent reading. It's expression. It's listening and responding. It's emotional and often messy. Here's where things get interesting: studies show that your brain processes punctuation differently depending on the mark. Semicolons and dashes? They activate the left side of the brain. Exclamation points and periods? The right side. Each carries its own emotional weight. Each sends a signal, even if you don't consciously register it. Which means your delivery may be less about what you're feeling… and more about how your brain is reacting to a comma. How to Break Free (Without Losing the Script) As Mandy Fisher shared in this episode of the Acting Business Boot Camp podcast, one of the most helpful things you can do—especially for commercial reads—is to strip out the punctuation entirely. Remove the commas. Take out the periods. Uncapitalize everything except brand names. Why? Because when you stop being told where to pause or emphasize, you start making those choices from instinct. From character. From context. It might feel strange at first, but that discomfort is exactly where more interesting, more connected performances begin. A Simple Experiment to Try This Week Take 60 seconds of script. Could be anything—a monologue, a commercial, a scene. Delete every piece of punctuation. Then read it out loud. Notice what your voice does. Notice how your pacing shifts. See what happens when you stop “reading” and start speaking. You might stumble. You might feel a little out of control. But you'll also find something new. A more honest rhythm. A stronger point of view. A version of the script that sounds less like a performance and more like a person. Final Thought: Punctuation or Presence? Punctuation has a place. It can help with rhythm and intention. But if you're performing with one eye on the commas, you're probably holding back. So ask yourself: are you punctuating for performance? Or are you speaking from presence? You already have a voice that's worth hearing. You don't need grammar rules to make it powerful. Let go. Experiment. Trust that you know how to connect without a period telling you when to stop. Ready to take your training deeper? Today on BOLD STEPS, Pastor Mark Jobe has a perspective-changing lesson on how to handle our temptation … to complain. Last time, we began a message about a seemingly simple subject … the topic of complaining. We all do it, and unfortunately, it's one of those things that gets easier and easier to fall into the more we do it. That's why combating our instinct to grumble is so important! There will always be problems, struggles, and uncertainties in this life … but how we choose to respond to them makes all the difference. You may think that complaining is just a natural response, a simple way of expressing how we feel. Today on BOLD STEPS, Pastor Mark Jobe warns about the danger of grumbling. With Thanksgiving coming up next week, we wanted to share a message he gave to students here at MBI on the need to move beyond grumbling and complaining. And this is aimed at EVERYONE. We all have a tendency to gripe and complain from time to time, but Mark is going to emphasize the importance of fighting The Grumble.
