Jane Wurwand is not just the founder of Dermalogica—she's a force of nature. A visionary in the beauty industry, she built a billion-dollar global skincare empire while championing financial independence for women. But behind her success is a deeply personal story of resilience, reinvention, and sheer determination. In this episode of Beautiful Inside by Beauticate, I sat down with Jane at Dermalogica's headquarters in LA to hear her extraordinary journey firsthand. She opened up about losing her father at just two years old, growing up in Scotland with a single mother who instilled in her an unshakable drive for independence, and the challenges she faced as a young woman navigating an industry dominated by men.Jane shares how she escaped a toxic marriage, started over in South Africa, and later took a bold leap to California—arriving with nothing but a plan, unstoppable determination, and a vision that would change the beauty world forever. She explains how adversity shaped her work ethic, why financial empowerment is at the heart of Dermalogica, and the mindset shifts that helped her turn setbacks into stepping stones. We also dive into the power of intuition, the role of magical thinking in success, and the daily rituals that keep Jane grounded while leading a global brand. Her story is one of reinvention, courage, and unwavering belief in the power of purpose-driven business. If you've ever felt stuck, faced personal or professional setbacks, or wondered how to truly build something meaningful, this episode is packed with insight and inspiration. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • How childhood adversity shaped Jane's drive and independence • The bold decisions that led to the creation of Dermalogica • How to reframe trauma and setbacks into fuel for success • The power of visualization and intuition in business and life • Jane's daily rituals for balance, resilience, and creative thinkingThis is a conversation about more than just skincare—it's about reinvention, resilience, and the courage to bet on yourself.A special thank you to Dermalogica, our season sponsor for Season 4. Today we're welcoming Jane Wurwand, co-founder of Dermalogica, the skincare brand Jill can't stop raving about! Recording straight from their HQ in Carson, California, we meet the legend who managed to take an indie skincare spa brand and turn it into a multi-million-dollar success story, passing the torch of self-actualization to hundreds of female entrepreneurs with their education-first approach in the process. In this do-not-miss episode, Jane gives us a sneak peek into her newly launched book, Skin In The Game: Everything You Need is Already Inside You.    For anyone looking for a post-pandemic reset, Jane schools us on how to tap into your own purpose, sharing the lessons she's learned through intimate, say-what?? stories. Find out how her father's early passing ignited a fire in Jane as a 5-year-old girl growing up in Scotland, and how a trip to Japan inspired Dermalogica's iconic Daily Microfoliant exfoliating powder – now celebrating its 20th anniversary. Plus, find out what Jane has to say about “Clean Washing,” the one thing that still needs to change in the industry, and why to her, “Beauty” is a dirty word.   *Special thanks to Dermalogica for providing travel and accommodations to Breaking Beauty for this story.   PROMO CODES: When you support our sponsors, you support the making of Breaking Beauty Podcast! Today, Evelyn and Dani discuss holistic medicine and the Compton Health Bar. Dani Solorio, 33, is an herbalist and the founder of Compton Health Bar, which is a health and wellness store in the city of Compton, CA. Compton Health Bar's mission is to bring health to the hood and reconnect us with our ancestral healing practices. Dani is originally from Zacápu, Michoacán, Mexico, she arrived in the US at the age of 6, and grew up in Lynwood, CA. She began her entrepreneurial journey at a young age, primarily because as an undocumented high school student, college was not an option. By working in warehouses and restaurants, Dani saved enough money to open her first business at the age of 21 – a tiny video store inside the indoor swap meet in Compton, CA. Although Dani loved movies, her true passion had always been natural medicine, which led to the opening of her first health store in 2012. She has been growing her herbal remedy practice and nourishing her community ever since. Zoe Saldana’s media company, BESE, made a mini-documentary about Dani and her health mission. Jane Wurwand, founder of Dermalogica and FOUND/LA, selected Dani and Compton Health Bar as recipients for FOUND/LA’s California State University of Northridge’s Business Honors Consulting Program. Dani has been a featured speaker on the topics of entrepreneurship and holistic healing on podcasts, at business events, at local schools/ institutions, and has been featured multiple times on Telemundo's "Acceso Total." Dani currently resides in Willowbrook, CA, with her wife, and consults with clients in Compton as well as other parts of the country. Understanding your skin isn’t just about what you see on the surface. There is a deeper connection that can be uncovered and Dermalogica does that through Face Mapping. In this episode Jane Wurwand, Founder and Chief Visionary of Dermalogica, takes us through the concept of Face Mapping. This skin analysis is a true journey to help you understand your skin, and it all begins with a conversation and the power of human touch. Jane shares how Face Mapping was created, why it’s core to Dermalogica’s DNA and personal stories of how it’s impacted her as a skin therapist and so many others. At Dermalogica we believe that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for skin health. Face Mapping is the first step in the personalization of both a professional skin treatment and an at-home skin care regimen. Face Mapping is so much more involved than just looking at the skin; it begins the relationship and builds the trust between clients and skin therapists all over the world.  Click here Face Mapping to learn more!

This is the story of where entrepreneurship and a passion for skin care come together and an industry is changed forever.  It started in Los Angeles, 1983, where Jane Wurwand, a tenured, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist new to the American "esthetician" industry, recognized that continuing skin therapy education was practically non-existent in the United States.  After opening a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI), Jane invited licensed skin therapists to the postgraduate training to help make them competitive in the business. In 1986, Dermalogica was born, as it didn’t take long for Jane to realize no product line embraced her belief of skin health as opposed to "beauty," so she developed her own. The vision was clear – a product line free of common irritants and artificial ingredients and most importantly one that would improve skin health. With more than 100,000 skin therapists trained and available in over 80 countries, Dermalogica products are the number one choice of skin care professionals and consumers worldwide.   www.dermalogica.com
