In this episode… Branding involves more than simply developing a clever name and eye-catching packaging to drive repeat sales. You must generate loyalty through post-purchase efforts and differentiate yourself from the competition. Yet 95% of brands ignore post-sale branding, blending in with the millions of other brands in their category. How can you rise above the noise to assert your dominance in the market? Branding interventionist David Brier urges brands not to be tentative in their efforts. Instead, communicate your values, mission, and personality with a sense of conviction and be bold in your endeavors. To differentiate yourself authentically, evaluate your competitors, look ahead into the future, and pivot based on the insights you've gathered. When it comes to generating lifetime value, you must provide customers with compelling reasons to engage with your brand post-sale. Rather than spamming them with countless emails promoting similar products, reimagine how your brand can function in consumers' lives beyond the initial purchase.  On this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, David Brier, the President and Creative Director of DBD International, Ltd., joins William Harris to reveal revolutionary brand-building strategies. David shares when you should consider a brand intervention, how to develop a recognizable brand, and how to obtain buy-in from senior executives.

We spend more than the average time with James exploring his life as a son of teachers (who I truly admire), a Cambridge University grad and one of the earliest Y Combinator alumni. His thoughts are ones that I want to come back and listen to over and over again. I feel like the didactic impact from just this conversation is worth at least 3 or 8 listens to this one interview. I highly recommend contrasting it with Lex Fridman's interview of Sam Altman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Guz73e6fw) or even Guy Raz's interview with him (https://podcasts.apple.com/nl/podcast/hibt-lab-openai-sam-altman/id1150510297?i=1000580232536) or even Reid Hoffman's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPJIpx3KscY). I think Tim Ferris also did one with him at one point, but I can't find it to share. Please feel free to add it to the comments or anywhere you can. James is a fascinating perspective and this interview, I believe is possibly worth listening just as much as the 3 former ones -- just saying.

After working as a lawyer and executive at several early-stage technology companies, Andrew eventually became CEO of an education company that became #1 in the country. He then started a national entrepreneurship non-profit, Venture for America, which worked to empower thousands of young entrepreneurs to bring their dynamism to communities across the country, from New Orleans and Baltimore to Denver and Detroit. Andrew was named a Presidential Ambassador of Entrepreneurship by the White House under the Obama administration and a Champion of Change for his work with Venture for America. Initially dubbed a "longer than long shot" candidate by the New York Times in 2018, Andrew became a top-tier contender for the presidency, raising nearly $40 million in grassroots funding. With a vision to rewrite the rules of the United States economy through a “Freedom Dividend” of $1,000 a month for every American adult, Andrew became one of the most exciting stories in the 2020 race. Andrew's nationwide support, known as the “Yang Gang,” propelled him to seven Democratic primary debates, outlasting six senators, four governors, three members of Congress, two mayors, and one secretary. Following this unexpected run for president, Andrew formed the non-profit Humanity Forward, successfully lobbying Congress for direct cash relief for struggling American families during the pandemic while simultaneously distributing over $8 million directly to struggling families. From his presidential and New York mayoral runs, Andrew has seen first-hand what's preventing our country from getting things done, and he is now directing his energies towards fixing the machinery of our stagnant democracy. With Forward - Notes on the Future of Our Democracy, Andrew lays out the case for a variety of democracy reform measures that can unclog the pipes of our system and realign the incentives of legislators with the wellbeing of the American people.   Produced by The MunnAvenuePress.com

If you're familiar with the Silicon Valley world or venture capital space, Steve Jurvetson is a name that needs no introduction. For the rest of you, Steve's a legendary venture capitalist perhaps best known for his early backing of companies like Hotmail, Skype, Paypal, Tesla, SpaceX, and more. He sat on Tesla's board of directors for years, and currently sits on SpaceX's board, too. These big bets he's taken on then-risky and out-there companies have led Steve to astronomical financial success (pun intended), but also to become an influential thought leader on space and technology issues, along with others. He was also an early backer of the cultivated meat industry, investing in Upside Foods' Series A. In 2016, President Obama appointed Steve as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship. Steve's also been honored as one of "Tech's Best Venture Investors" by Forbes, and as the “Venture Capitalist of the Year” by Deloitte. The dude's a pretty prolific photographer too, it turns out, as I've learned. In fact, if you enter his name into Google without hitting enter, one of the dropdowns you get served is Steve Jurvetson Flickr!  Today, Steve runs a venture capital fund called Future Ventures with his business partner Maryanna Saenko, and for full disclosure, as you'll hear in this interview, Future Ventures is an investor in my own company, The Better Meat Co. But as you'll also hear in this interview, that doesn't stop us from discussing taboo topics like Steve's personal wealth, how he spends his money, and more.  Other interesting topics we explore include: What led a deep tech investor like Steve to invest in alternative meat? How many startup pitches does Steve hear weekly?  What makes a good pitch, and what gets him to cross the finish line to actually wire investment dollars? What company does Steve want you to start and pitch him on? What does Steve think you should look for in a cofounder? For what does Steve think his future self will condemn his current self? What would be one of the greatest discoveries ever, in Steve's view? What happened in his life when Steve stopped drinking? What does Steve suggest you try as “the funniest google exercise”? In all, it's a riveting conversation with one of the most consequential names in business, including businesses that are seeking to do good in the world.  Resources referenced in this episode NASA's Planetary Protection Division and Paul's thoughts in Astronomy magazine about its implications Massive liquid water oceans in our solar system, such as on Europa and Enceladus Europa report, which Steve still needs to see Steve's thoughts on Boston Consulting Group's report on where best to invest for the climate Steve's review of Paul's book Clean Meat (which he reviewed before the two knew each other) Other books Steve's enjoyed: Steve Jobs, The Founders, and Code Breaker More about Steve Jurvetson Steve Jurvetson is an early-stage venture capitalist with a focus on founder-led, mission-driven companies at the cutting edge of disruptive technology and new industry formation.  Steve led founding investments in several companies that had successful IPOs and others that were billion-dollar acquisitions, representing $800 billion of aggregate value creation. Some of those early VC investments include Planet Labs, SpaceX and Tesla. Before co-founding Future Ventures and Draper Fisher Jurvetson,  Steve was an R&D Engineer at Hewlett-Packard, where seven of his chip designs were fabricated.  He also worked in product marketing at Apple and NeXT and management consulting with Bain & Company.  He completed his undergraduate Electrical Engineering degree at Stanford in 2.5 years, graduating #1 in his class, and went on to earn a MSEE and MBA from Stanford.  In 2017, Steve received the Visionary Award from SV Forum. In 2016, President Barack Obama appointed Steve as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship. Steve has also been honored as one of "Tech's Best Venture Investors" by Forbes, and as the “Venture Capitalist of the Year” by Deloitte.

David is also the author of the award-winning book Brand Intervention: 33 Steps to Transform the Brand You Have into the Brand You Need. In this episode: Customers buy transformations — products or services that make things simpler, better, easier, tastier, smaller, or bigger. How can you use your company's unique story as a selling point to differentiate itself from competitors? How can your brand add value for customers? The most essential factor in building your brand is the experience people have with your product or service — the actual differentiator of using it, interacting with it, and the transformation it helps bring about. With a wealth of branding experience behind him, David Brier's advice is to start by focusing on customers' problems and needs. He helps companies create a unique brand that relates and interacts better with customers. Customers look for brands that fill the gap between where they are and where they want to be — they are looking for a solution. Once you can do that for them, your business will grow. In this episode of the Systems Simplified podcast, Adi Klevit interviews David Brier, Founder and CEO of DBD International, Ltd., about his system for creating a differentiated brand. David also talks about his book, explains what branding means, and discusses how companies can become extraordinary and differentiate themselves from competitors.

Michael Shermer speaks with Andrew Yang about the Forward Party, the future of politics in a party duopoly, political partisanship, and how to bring about the change we need. This conversation is based on Yang's new book Forward: Notes on the Future of Our Democracy. Shermer and Yang discuss: why we have a political duopoly, instead of, say, 7 parties like in Germany • ranked-choice voting and open primaries • gerrymandering and voting restriction laws and policies • the Rational Public • fairness doctrine • local journalism, newspapers, and TV stations • term limits • nonpartisan primaries • data as a property right • Department of Technology • Universal Basic Income (UBI) • reparations • abortion • the polarization of radio, television, and social media • ideology and political polarization • Trump in 2016, 2020 … and 2024? • what it's like to run for President • what his fellow politicians are really like in person • what he learned on the campaign trail • how his many failures in life prepared him for political campaigning • why market solutions to social media polarization won't work • why you should join the Forward Party even if you don't agree with all their points. Andrew Yang was a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and a 2021 candidate for mayor of New York City. Julie Hanna is an Egyptian-born entrepreneur and chair of the board of Kiva, a US-based non-profit organisation that allows people to lend money via the internet to people on low incomes in over 90 countries. Julie herself came to the US as a child refugee, fleeing civil wars in Jordan and in Lebanon, where her family were living. She says it shaped her as a person. In 2015, President Obama named her Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship. Vijayalakshmi Das is the CEO of Friends of Women's World Banking, India, which is based in Ahmedabad. This week, we’re excited to share a conversation with 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate and Venture for America founder, Andrew Yang. Andrew is not your typical politician. In fact, he’s a serial entrepreneur, more known for starting and leading companies than waging political battles. He’s also running on a bold policy platform that proposes universal basic income. Last but certainly not least, he’s Asian American which will make him the first Asian American to ever run for President of the United States as a Democrat. Being the first Asian American President is not Andrew’s motivation for running. But his run is opening a dialogue about the the future of humanity and the role Asian Americans should play in civic life, politics, and broader society. In this episode, we talk to Andrew about: His upbringing,
His brief stint as a corporate lawyer which then led him into a career of entrepreneurship,
His thoughts on Asian American civic involvement,
Why he’s running for president, and ultimately Why we all need to wake up to the economic realities of our time.

This week's conversation is with entrepreneur Daymond John on the power of clarity, vision, and imagery. From street hustle -- to Shark Tank to being a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, he has become globally recognized for his relentless commitment to promoting and supporting entrepreneurs. Daymond initially made his mark as the entrepreneur and branding expert behind the groundbreaking lifestyle brand, FUBU (which eclipsed more than $6 billion in global retail sales). He started a global brand from the basement of his mother’s house.Today, the streetwear market that FUBU pioneered is a $20 billion dollar industry. In this conversation we discuss what has been the driving force behind Daymond’s success, his process for setting goals, and why having clarity is so important to him.In every single of these conversations I ask the guest if they have a guiding philosophy that shapes their life. Daymond likes to ask people if they can describe themselves in 2-5 words. When you’re able to be that concise, it leads to some serious clarity. In Daymond’s words: “If you don’t know what you stand for, when you walk into a room, you leave it up to us to interpret who you are.”This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.Receive a free 20-count travel pack of Athletic Greens (valued at $99) with any purchase!Claim here: athleticgreens.com/findingmasterySupport for Finding Mastery also brought to you by Health IQ:Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more.Learn more and get a free quote at healthiq.com/findingmastery

This conversation was a lot of fun; Andrew really humanized entrepreneurship and how to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Some of my favorite moments included: (1) why entrepreneurship isn’t a magic trick (3:05), (2) how he sees entrepreneurship shaking out over the next decade (16:55), (3) the consciousness that has emerged from this election cycle (24:06), and finally (4) key takeaways for young professionals (40:01). "I remember it like it was yesterday. It was Good Friday, 1989, at 3:30 in the afternoon. It was 37 degrees outside. I stood outside the Colosseum Mall, a mall in Jamaica, Queens. It's pretty popular. Just shivering with a bag of hats. I sold $800 worth of hats in an hour," Daymond John tells me. $800 an hour. That's "the power of broke." Before FUBU (a $6 billion global apparel company), before Shark Tank, and before Obama chose him as the Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, Daymond John worked 18-hour days driving a delivery van. And he wasn't making money. His paychecks covered overhead - the cost of his van, gas, and maintenance. He worked to make money, and he made money to work. "When I took that to FUBU, I started saying, 'If we're not making money, it's not worth doing anything,'" he says. It's not failure. It's experience. "Other people call it failure. I won't call it failure. It's part of the process," he says. You need to take every single "failure" and bring it forward. You're on the floor. And broke. Learn from it. Money is the byproduct of energy, effort, and strategy. "Before you have any business, you're supposed to take inventory of yourself," Daymond says. "Assets and liabilities can be time, energy, education, friends, location, way of thinking." You have to take inventory of yourself. His new book, The Power of Broke: How Empty Pockets, a Tight Budget, and a Hunger for Success Can Become Your Greatest Competitive Advantage is not Daymond's story. It's your story. And mine. It's about how you're going to get up, get experience, and get money. These are stories I learned from. The power of broke is "the common thread between all of us," Daymond says. It's about how you can learn from your mistakes and profit off your potential. Take advantage of that. Listen to my interview with Daymond. Here are the top 3 things you can only learn by listening to today's podcast: - "That is the most important thing about running a business," Daymond says. "If you don't have that, I don't care how much money you have. You can't buy your way into it." (at 5:35) - I ask Daymond: What are the first steps? What if you're listening and saying, "I got born at the wrong time," or "I'm in the wrong town"? What if you're hungry? And you want to hustle, and you've got the power of broke, but you don't know what to do with it? (at 21:59) - How do you know when a business will be successful?
