When news broke of the Jewish National Fund of Canada losing its charitable status on Aug. 10, the move meant the Canada Revenue Agency also stripped the venerable Jewish charity of its ability to issue tax receipts to donors. This poses a serious challenge to the historic Zionist fundraising organization–which received $20.2 million in donations in 2023: will supporters still want to give money to JNF Canada for environmental and resilience projects in Israel if they can no longer write the philanthropy off on their Canadian income tax forms? Some donors are taking a wait and see approach, but want answers as to why JNF Canada admits it kept quiet for years about its problems with the federal tax auditors who warned them about "repeated and serious non-compliance" with Canadian tax rules dating back to at least 2014, and earlier. But other philanthropists say the bureaucrats didn't treate JNF Canada fairly, and they expect the charity will win both of its appeals in court: to block the suspension, and to eventually overturn it. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we're joined by two prominent JNF Canada donors: Jonathan Goodman of Montreal, who is raising $10 million for JNF Canada's new Climate Solutions Prize to boost "green technology", and also by Mary Ellen Herman of Toronto, who donated half the cost of an accessible playground built in southern Israel. Today's panel comprises environmental reporter Sue Surkes and Palestinian affairs correspondent Aaron Boxerman, along with host Jessica Steinberg. Surkes assesses the extent of ecological damage wreaked by the massive fires that ripped through the Jerusalem Hills since Sunday, turning some 25,000 dunams (6,200 acres) of woodlands into scorched earth, harming complex ecosystems. The Palestinian Authority sent four firefighting teams to assist in putting out the fires in the Jerusalem hills, prompting public thanks from Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. Back on the environmental front, a look at a $1 million prize kickstarted by Canadian philanthropist Jeff Hart aimed at bringing Israeli-based innovation technology to fight climate change worldwide. And finally, while several rockets were shot into Israel from Gaza this week, Israel isn't responding, in an effort to allow talks to proceed between Gaza and Israel, three months after Operation Guardian of the Walls. Discussed articles include: Ecologists worry over ecosystem's recovery after huge Jerusalem-area blaze Palestinian firefighters help Israel battle Jerusalem-area blazes With $1m annual prize, donor hopes Israeli ideas will help solve climate crisis TV: Israel not responding to Gaza rocket due to progress in talks with Hamas Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Have you ever been talking to your friends one moment, and then the next you wake up covered in blood with human remains in your teeth? Well... We hope not... But this is exactly what happened to Jake and Amanda. One moment they're teenagers, and then suddenly they're full fledged zombies. Oh and not to mention the NCD is after them trying to cover up the whole "zombies are real" deal from the public. Unfortunately, the two newly zombified teens can't escape Cass. Cass is a psychic who bonds with Jake in such an unconventional way... she even starts to like like him. Yet, Jake likes Amanda, but Cass likes Jake...but Jake's a zombie and doesn't even know Cass really exists. What a strange love triangle.
This Friday episode reacts to a full day of the first major championship in more than a year. A favorite son of the SGS, Brendon Todd is yet again on top of the leaderboard and there is condemnation for those who lost the faith because of potential “bombers’ paradise.” Andy uses this to offer some pointed thoughts on the setup and rough and what, if anything, we can take away from a mixed leaderboard after 18 holes. Then there’s a segment honoring Jeff Hart, the 60-year-old club pro who putted with his glove on and hit some eye-poppingly short drives. Brooksy’s back again and continues to speedbag Bryson, who had some shaft problems. They debate whether Bryson should have been able to put a new driver in play. There’s a cross-sport comp that anoints Zatch Johnson the St. Louis Cardinals of golf. There is ample time spent on the Spieth Problem, which Andy claims is just a mental issue at this point. Brendan asks how many players under 40, even with the current grim situation, would not take Spieth’s resume and career right now? Rory’s struggles are also put into perspective but Tiger’s approach is praised in the context of Andy’s earlier course analysis. Also, did the PGA screw Jon Rahm with his grouping. They close with some words of praise on ESPN voices re-joining golf coverage and a whiparound discussion on the Pirate going low in England and the U.S. Women’s Amateur bracket shaping up for a blockbuster weekend.
Jeff Hart is a professor at Western Washington University and Jeff raised his son as a single parent. Jeff has lived his life exploring a diverse array of interests such as competition shooting, Kempo karate, sportbike stunt riding, ultra-running, rock climbing, and mountaineering. One way I measure a person is by how clearly they can express themselves. I wonder if it’s ever possible to achieve complete and lasting unobstructed self-expression. In my experience, I feel like that resistance, be it time, responsibilities, injury, finances, etc, is everpresent. Since unobstructed self-expression is so hard to grasp, it feels increasingly enjoyable as you grasp the ilk just a little bit more.Jeff’s life story of learning skills and pursuing fulfillment is a great study in problem-solving to remove the intrinsic and extrinsic obstructions that would stifle his pursuit of fulfillment.Jeff and I discuss how building skills in activities do or do not transfer to the skills useful in daily life. I got to go get trad-dad with Jeff and talk about how he balances parenting and pursuing his own passions.Links to subjects discussed on the podcasthttps://positivepsychology.com/self-concept/
