Most Americans today would not think of their local church as a site for arbitration and would probably be hesitant to bring their property disputes, moral failings, or personal squabbles to their kin and neighbors for judgment. But from the Revolutionary Era through the mid-nineteenth century, many Protestants imbued local churches with immense authority. Through their ritual practice of discipline, churches insisted that brethren refrain from suing each other before "infidels" at local courts and claimed jurisdiction over a range of disputes: not only moral issues such as swearing, drunkenness, and adultery but also matters more typically considered to be under the purview of common law and courts of equity, including disputes over trespass, land, probate, slave warranty, and theft. In Law in American Meetinghouses: Church Discipline and Civil Authority in Kentucky, 1780–1845 (Johns Hopkins UP, 2022), Jeffrey Thomas Perry explores the ways that ordinary Americans--Black and white, enslaved and free--understood and created law in their local communities, uncovering a vibrant marketplace of authority in which church meetinghouses played a central role in maintaining their neighborhoods' social peace. Churches were once prominent sites for the creation of local law and in this period were a primary arena in which civil and religious authority collided and shaped one another. When church discipline failed, the wronged parties often pushed back, and their responses highlight the various forces that ultimately hindered that venue's ability to effectively arbitrate disputes between members. Relying primarily on a deep reading of church records and civil case files, Perry examines how legal transformations, an expanding market economy, and religious controversy led churchgoers to reimagine their congregations' authority. By the 1830s, unable to resolve doctrinal quibbles within the fellowship, church factions turned to state courts to secure control over their meetinghouses, often demanding that judges wade into messy ecclesiastical disputes. Tracking changes in disciplinary rigor in Kentucky Baptist churches from that state's frontier period through 1845, and looking beyond statutes and court decrees, Law in American Meetinghouses is a fresh take on church-state relations. Ultimately, it highlights an oft-forgotten way that Americans subtly repositioned religious institutions alongside state authority. Learn more about your ad choices. Paul Jeffrey Thomas has been composing songs from a very early age and feels uniquely integrated as a human person when that inspiration gifts him with music and the chance to perform what he has written. Paul still feels the idealism of music having the ability to help improve the world's social structures and the lives of people everywhere. For Paul, music is life and as important as breathing. Join me in this episode of Someone Gets Me —How to Fall in Love with Your Art Again with Paul Jeffrey Thomas ▶️ Key point covered in this episode: ✔️Paul put music and lyrics that speak to his soul, hoping that it speaks to many others, too. In his song, We'll Get Home, he shares how happiness awaits on the other side when you take the courage to pursue your healing and transformation. This message is one that many of us can make use of today. ✔️Music as a ministry. To borrow Leo Fender's words, he said, "Musicians are emissaries of God." Paul believes this is a sacred role in making music that touches and heals. Musicians, in a way, facilitate the gift of restoration for many who need it. ✔️Intuition and inspiration work together in the creation process. As a singer, songwriter, and composer, Paul describes that making music does not necessarily require developing it intellectually but manifesting from what's coming in from the soul and the heart. ✔️Spirituality is called a "practice" for a reason. Pursuing and deepening the relationship with the sacred requires consistency. Whether it's prayer, meditation, and breathing exercises — these all require repetition to achieve a truly spiritual life. ✔️Take the spiritual path through your creativity. Paul shares how in his journey, he opened up through self-acceptance and made more music that heals and imparts life wisdom as an artist. Paul Jeffrey Thomas is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, lyricist, poet, and composer. He studied classical guitar and composition at Rhode Island College and jazz guitar at Berklee College of Music. Paul's experience includes bands he formed around his original songs, appearances on Nashville television, writing for cable, and independent film. He was nominated in Japan for best score for the independent film Not Me by filmmaker Mahmoud Salimi. Well our Punktowners have found the ship, and it seems to have some crew! Strange, they all should be dead. Something does not seem right, and the only way to get a handle on the situation is for Tenpenny to do some deep space accounting. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Our Punktowners have a new mission. Travel to a unknown place, outside of the galaxy, find a missing experimental starship, and retrieve a piece of technology. Well if you're going to be going on a long distance trip that means it's time to drain Aikeets bank account to upgrade the gang. It's time for another in-between episode. In this one vinney's on again off again girlfriend finally confesses her love to Mooch, and things do not go well.
Our Punktowners are in way over their heads now. Secrets are revealed, and they are initiated into a secret organization whose job is to fight existential threats that are apocalyptical in nature. No problem for a bunch of hardened Paxton citizens.
How are the characters going to find who their "handler" wants them to eliminate? Try following the spiders......
It's another in-between episode for our Punktowners, now with 100% more prostitution saving!
Our Punktowners have a very super secret meeting with some very important people. Time to get on their super secret disguises, aka bondage gear. Just another day in Paxton.
Well our punktowners are in it now. You could almost say they are in too deep to get out. But what does it all mean? Who are they all working for? What is the endgame for all this? All things in good time.......in good time.
Fishing? In Paxton? What are our Punktowners up to this time? I'm sure it has something to do with the robot Akeet and his amazing ability to make a plan come together.
Can a poop onesie be a brand? Short answer: yes (an anatomically correct vagina is next). This week Amanda tries not to get too personal while speaking with pelvic physical therapist, Dr. Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas of Greater Boston Urology about pelvic health. You know, your internal banana hammock that no one thinks about nearly as much as they should? Dr. Jeffrey-Thomas talks about her COVID pivot to spreading accurate information to the masses via TikTok and Instagram, and how she is able to approach pelvic health from a more holistic standpoint with her co-worker and surgeon, Dr. Angel Johnson. Your pelvis holds A LOT OF STUFF, and synchronicity is more important than you think. Amanda gets the scoop on hovering over a public (or any) toilet seat, peeing in the shower, kegels -- which may not be the answer you need, why am I leaking (am I leaking?), and what in God's name is the Bristol Stool Scale? With great knowledge comes great responsibility about how your body works; you are going to be thinking about this all week. Our Punktowners have found out where the kid is, with some cult on the outskirts of Paxton. The problem though is how to get him out of there. Aikeet's food delivery service to the rescue!

Our punktowners are given another case by their mysterious benefactor. Just a little favor, to find a missing child. Of course in Paxton things are never that easy.

Our Punktowners are deep underground and have found the source of the missing people. Something is strange about this place though. Will our heroes make it out alive?
Our punktowners are still trying to find out the mystery of the missing people, a common occurrence is the city of Paxton, but this leads them underground where some dangerous critters call their home.
What is an RPG without the obligatory groveling at the altar of mindless capitalism? Our Punktowners feel naked without weapons dangling from every appendage, so it's off to buy some things!
Our Punktowners are hot on the trail of a "monster." Of course this is Paxton, which makes differentiating the populace from horrific creatures can be rather difficult.
He got away with murder on an insanity defense... shot to death in 1978 attempting to abduct a woman, and decades after his death, he claimed another victim.
Our Punktowners have a new mission. Simple enough, find a missing person, but in Paxton nothing is ever so simple.
Our punktowners have "solved" the mystery of the cult and now it is time for some rest and relaxation. Come find out what happens when our players have to do some improvising about their daily lives.
Our investigators reluctantly dig deep into the workings of a cult on the outskirts of Punktown. Everything seems to be on the up and up, and one of the characters starts to see things their way, but all of this just does not feel right.

On today's show we hear from the Director of Risk Management and Employee Benefits for the Atlanta Independent School System, Jeffrey Thomas. What does it mean to Manage your Medical Providers? We may have all heard some of the following terms when in our work place when it comes to managing our employees and staff. MBO – management by objectives MBM – management by memorandum MBE – management by email MBWA – management by wandering around MBLSA – management by the last seminar attended However, today Jeffrey walks through with us how to manage through communication ensuring that you are imparting knowledge and bringing awareness to those you are managing. There needs to be clarity from both the sender and receiver to ensure that the communication has been understood. Strategies for Managing Your Medical Providers Most effective form of communication is direct, honest and face to face with the providers. Its important for the employer to drive the conversations so that the providers understand the specific policies and practices since the vary from employer to employer. Medical Providers Role Be available to the employers, listening in to the questions that you may have so that they are answered and taken care of accurately. Its important if you are a medical provider to remember that the employers you are working with are your customers and they have other options if they are not understood or taken care of correctly. Success is defined by the communication between the employer and medical providers not defined solely by the reduction of your medical expenses.

Fans of Warner Brothers Animation will recognize Celeste Green as the co-creator of "Gotham High." Based on the DC Comics character, Batman, "Gotham High" was an animated series created by Celeste Green and Jeffrey Thomas. The series was ready to receive the green light from DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation until a sudden changeover in studio management shelved all animated projects at that time. Since then, the concept artwork from the project has gone viral, appearing in online film publications such as Gawker, io9.com, ComingSoon.net, and SuperHeroHype.com. Celeste is also the former president of the Lyric Music theater and serves as the executive director and co-founder of Cast Aside Productions in Portland, Maine. What's more important for artists? Achieving fame and recognition through the admiration of fans? Or finding authenticity, sincerity, and honesty? Can you have both? Are they mutually exclusive? How do artists find that balance? In this episode, we explore these questions and more, including her experience working with Warner Brothers, our mutual experience as students at Emerson College (which also happens to include a Batman project!), and her own sense of theological exploration through web comics and graphic novels. --- Featuring Patrick Girts as the Joker
