Mantic are currently Kickstarting DreadBall All Stars™: The Sci-Fi Sports GameSpend five minutes talking to Ronnie Renton, and one thing becomes clear. He is still, by his own admission, “mentally… only 12 years old.”That enthusiasm has carried him from the earliest days of Warhammer through to founding Mantic Games, and into a modern hobby that looks very different to the one he started in.“I had a pre-order for the very first edition,” he says. “So I've been on that journey from day one.”Now, decades later, he is designing for players who have taken that same journey and no longer have the time they once did.Making games that fit real livesA recurring theme in Renton's thinking is simple. People still love the hobby, but their lives have changed.“I don't have time to spend ages finessing loads of things if I just want to play on a Tuesday night,” he explains. That shift has shaped Mantic's recent output. Where once the answer to everything was a large-scale game like Kings of War, the company now builds across a wider spread. Smaller, faster experiences sit alongside the traditional long-form hobby projects.Renton describes it as two types of game.“I think there's the Forever Game and then there's the now game,” he says. The former is the classic army-building commitment. The latter is something you can pick up, play for a few months, then move on from without guilt. Most players, he suggests, now live somewhere between the two.Bringing in a legendThat shift in thinking is also reflected in who Mantic chooses to work with. One of the more notable recent moves has been bringing in Jervis Johnson, a designer whose influence stretches back decades. For Renton, the decision was straightforward once the idea took hold.“Why don't we go and get the guy that invented the genre to write it?” he says. The opportunity came while rethinking DreadBall. Rather than revisiting the existing game, the aim was to relaunch it in a way that felt fresh, faster, and easier to pick up.“It had to pay homage to what came before, but it mustn't be a rehash,” Renton explains.Johnson's approach reflects that brief. The focus is on clarity and pace, with rules that quickly become second nature.“Once you know it, everything you need is on the card,” Renton says. For Mantic, it is part of a broader direction. Bring in experienced designers, give them room to work, and build games that players can return to easily.“He just knows how to do it from beginning to end,” Renton adds. The danger of listening too muchFor all the talk of community engagement, Renton is wary of letting players design the game.“If you give the keys to the asylum to the loonies, they'll make the game that they think they want,” he says. The problem is not bad intent. It's focus. Players tend to fixate on edge cases and small frustrations, often at the expense of what makes a game welcoming in the first place.“You must stay true to it, but you must clean it up and make it welcoming to new players,” he explains.Fail to do that, and even a well-loved system slowly fades.Solving the real problemsRenton now starts design from a different place than he once did.“What problem am I going to solve?”Sometimes that problem is practical. Terrain that looks good but is also clear to play on. Games that can be set up quickly and packed away without taking over the house.Other times, it's social. Making it easier for players to actually get games in.“I want to come together, have fun, roll dice, and not have to spend all night remembering rules,” he says. That thinking runs through everything from quick-play sports games to simplified army formats. Not instead of, but alongsideOne of Renton's more telling observations is that new games are rarely replacements.“It's an as well as game, not an instead of game,” he says.Players are not abandoning their main systems. They are adding to them. A fast, one-hour game sits alongside a larger project rather than competing with it.That shift has consequences. It means games need to be easier to revisit, easier to teach, and easier to enjoy without long preparation.Keeping the hobby aliveFor all the changes, Renton does not think players themselves have become harder to please. The challenge is different.“There's more choice,” he says. That makes it harder to reach critical mass. A great game still fails if no one nearby is playing it.Which brings him back to the same core idea. Remove friction. Help players get from buying a game to actually playing it.Because in the end, nothing else matters if the miniatures never reach the table. And for someone who has been there since the very beginning, that still seems like a goal worth chasing.

The 7th Sea 3rd Edition role-playing game Kickstarter, developed by Studio Agate and licensed through Chaosium, successfully launched and was fully funded in under 30 minutes. This new edition advances the setting timeline in Théah by 10 years to 1678 and is designed to be backwards compatible with 2nd Edition materials. The mechanics have been overhauled to focus on cinematic action using a modernized “Roll & Keep” system that incorporates two colors of d10s: one for Action and one for Wound dice. Available pledge tiers range from a PDF Collection (~~$70 USD) to Deluxe Box Sets (~~$187 – $280 USD), and the campaign is set to conclude on April 9th, 2026. The DreadBall All-Stars Kickstarter by Mantic Games offers a new, standalone sci-fi sports board game that veterans Jervis Johnson and Alessio Cavatore designed to be a “full-contact version of NBA Basketball”. The game streamlines action for fast-paced, 60-minute matches by removing extensive team-building in favor of pre-assembled miniatures and fixed rosters. It features tactical play resolved via challenge rolls and “DreadBall cards,” multiple unique arenas that dynamically change the rules, and a new Battle Royale mode for 3 to 6 players. Mantic is providing the complete game and best value upfront, having opted out of traditional stretch goals, with the campaign concluding on April 9, 2026. The Warmachine 3D: Lost, Damned & Salvation campaign by Steamforged Games is running on the MyMiniFactory FronTier platform, acting as a limited-time discounted pre-order for official, 3D-printable STL files. The campaign offers files for three *Warmachine* armies currently playable in the MK4 edition ruleset: Grymkin, Infernals, and Convergence of Cyriss. Customers can purchase a Single Army for $150 or the All-In Bundle for $299. The models will eventually be released on the standard MyMiniFactory store at a higher individual price after the 14-day FronTier campaign concludes. Tunnels & Trolls: A New Age is a Kickstarter reboot of the classic 1975 heroic fantasy TTRPG, published by Rebellion Unplugged, which aims to be a simpler, less confusing alternative to D&D. The system uses D6 dice pools with “Exploding Dice” for fast, chaotic conflict resolution, prioritizing luck and risk over optimized builds. While the system itself is described as simple and robust, the reviewer expressed mixed feelings due to the Quickstart adventure. The introductory quest—clearing rats from a basement—was criticized for its dullness and inclusion of archaic design choices, such as requiring a skill roll just to open a door. The campaign offers a core rulebook, a campaign book, a city setting book, and solo adventures. #7thsea #dreadball #warmachine #tunnelsandtrolls 7th Sea 3rd Edition Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/agate/7th-sea-ttrpg-a-new-journey Dreadball All-Stars: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/manticgames/dreadball-all-stars-the-sci-fi-sports-game Warmachine Frontier: https://www.myminifactory.com/frontier/warmachine-lost-damned-salvation-5274 Tunnels & Trolls: A New Era: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rebellionunplugged/tunnels-and-trolls-a-new-age Definitive HATE on MyMiniFactory: https://www.myminifactory.com/frontier/hate-the-definitive-miniature-collection-5301 Sean Aaberg's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/seanaaberg LowLife Sign Up: https://www.dungeondegenerates.com/ Warmachine on MyMiniFactory: https://mmf.io/upturned Mantic Companion App: https://companion.manticgames.com/ Use our Referral code: MCTXEE Support us by Shopping at Miniature Market (afilliate link): https://miniature-market.sjv.io/K0yj7n Support Us by Shopping on DTRPG (afilliate link): https://www.drivethrurpg.com?affiliate_id=2081746 Matt’s DriveThruRPG Publications: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matthew%20Robinson https://substack.com/@matthewrobinson3 Chris on social media: https://hyvemynd.itch.io/ Jeremy's Links: http://www.abusecartoons.com/ http://www.rcharvey.com Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/upturnedtable Give us a tip on our livestream: https://streamlabs.com/upturnedtabletop/tip Donate or give us a tip on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/2754JZFW2QZU4 Intro song is “Chips” by KokoroNoMe https://kokoronome.bandcamp.com/
We are joined by Mantic Games CEO Ronnie Renton this week to discuss the upcoming Dreadball All Stars game. A new edition of the game written by the legendary Jervis Johnson.
In this in-depth interview, we sit down with Jervis Johnson, the legendary designer behind Blood Bowl, to talk about DreadBall All Stars — Mantic's upcoming all-star sci-fi sports game. Jervis breaks down: What DreadBall All Stars is and how it's evolved from classic DreadBall The move to alternating activations and faster, end-to-end gameplay How All-Star teams of unique characters change the feel of the game His approach to game design, iteration, and “murdering your darlings” Narrative vs competitive balance in modern tabletop games Championship play, legacy cards, and long-term replayability The dark, corporate satire behind the DreadBall universe We also dive into Jervis' reflections on Blood Bowl's legacy, emergent storytelling, gateway games, and what he's been working on recently — including Trench Crusade, a Godzilla RPG, and large-scale historical wargames. Whether you're a Blood Bowl veteran, a board gamer looking for your next fix, or simply interested in how great games are made, this is a fascinating conversation with one of tabletop gaming's most influential designers.

Since yesterday's release was just an 'official' reading of the April Fool's Day episode, the content, if not the presentation, of which you've already heard, I wanted to give you something new (in Oldex terms anyway) as well. And here it is! Huge thank you to Alistair for the contribution of Space Marines, Tyranids and Chaos Space Marines codices to the project. I look forward to getting to them! If you want to donate olde codexes to the project, get in touch via the means below. Like my readings of GW literature? Why not do me a favour and post on the Black Library Facebook page and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks? That would make my week to be honest. The Play to Win Podcast from Aconyte Books – Series 1: Everybody Wins by James Wallis
This is the Play to Win Podcast from Aconyte Books. This first series of the podcast accompanies the book Everybody Wins: Four Decades of the Greatest Board Games Ever Made by James Wallis. In this episode, James chats with two of the most significant figures in the British games industry from the 1980s onwards – legendary Games Workshop games designer Jervis Johnson and Fighting Fantasy editor and founder of Black Library Marc Gascoigne. If you enjoyed this podcast, visit www.aconytebooks.com for more information on Everybody Wins: Four Decades of the Greatest Board Games Ever Made by James Wallis.
Craig shares his latest obsession: Rick Priestley and Jervis Johnson's era-agnostic, miniature agnostic ranks and file game published by Warlord Games covers almost any kind of battle from the mid 1700s to the late 1800s. The Epic Battles supplement converts the game to a 15mm historicals with a focus on the ACW and the Napoleonic period in two lines of miniatures from Warlord Games...New starter sets with new minis are being released this month.
Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Hey, at least it's not such a gargantuan break as last time, is it? Seriously though, thank you very much for sticking with Oldex. I didn't realise it had been a month, I thought it was more like two weeks. For the last couple of months my depression has really battered me. It's been hard to do the bare minimum when it comes to audiobook narration and voice acting that actually pays me. Doing this passion project on top was asking too much of myself. One of those months was also spent narrating a 17+ hour audiobook for my other podcast, which is over 100 hours work. 1 hour of professional level audio, like Oldex, takes about 6 hours to do, so it was a significant chunk of my time. Thus, I appreciate you understanding why there's been a gap in episodes. I have as a result, however, improved my mastering process, so now its sounds even better! Oldex is back. Like my readings of GW literature? Why not do me a favour and post on the Black Library Facebook page and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks? In which I narrate mostly a chart! There was some lore on the same page, but I felt like it was missing some context without the full chart rundown. Plus, this is the final piece from Codex Imperial Guard (3rd. ed) and I didn't want to end it on a tiny little piece. I've had requests to cover old Eldar and Ork codices, but keep missing out on those as their eBay prices inflate beyond my means. I don't suppose you want to donate one to me, do you? Starring the toppermost lad, Nork Deddog is a character close to my heart and has been since I first read this edition of the Imperial Guard codex as child. I absolutely love Lord Commander Solar Macharius. He's one of my favourite characters. There isn't an audibook of the Macharius omnibus. Be a dear and email/tweet Black Library saying you want me to narrate that as an audiobook, won't you? Cheers. Something a bit meatier to get our teeth into, and the first of two extracts concerning one of my favourite characters in all Warhammer. I still have his model and when I've worked through more of The Backlog I'm looking forward to making a diorama with him. Honestly, there's longer fiction in this codex, it's just all later on. Certainly nothing like the fiction contained in the later 3rd ed. Codex Necrons though. Still, it gives examples of flavourful regiments beyond the big main ones that have their own doctrines these days. My sincere apologies in the time it's taken to get this out. A long term health condition really took a nosedive and I was struggling to get the basic facets of my life done, never mind Oldex. I've gone ahead and started to title these. They're not the official titles, just ones I think appropriate. I don't mean to impede on the writer's original story, or put my stamp on it (even though I am, really), it's just because I think it's going to be easier for you to know which stories you have or haven't listened to this way, rather than trying to remember if you've listened to 'page 10a' or 'page 10b'. This is a really human piece of Imperial Guard life that sets them apart from all the other factions in the universe. With some tweaks this could easily be a letter from a real-world war. Oldex now has a Facebook page! Like to keep up to date with new releases and show your support for the project: https://www.facebook.com/OldexPodcast I thought Storm Troopers, now called Tempestus Scions, coming from the Schola Progenium was a relatively modern thing, perhaps brought in with the Scions replacing the Storm Troopers in...I want to say 6th edition? I also thought the Kasrkin style of Storm Troopers came in 4th edition or later, but having just looked them up in this codex, the picture next to their entry is that of the Kasrkin. The guys I own in berets must've been 2nd edition boys! Despite being very static, 2-piece monopose they still hold up rather well. Oldex now has a Facebook page! Like to keep up to date with new releases and show your support for the project: https://www.facebook.com/OldexPodcast I had a choice between 3rd edition Imperial Guard or Space Marine codexes and listener Tom favoured the Astra Militarum. It's a wise choice; after the otherworldly and Lovecraftian weirdness of the Necrons this most human and relatable of factions will make the perfect counterpoint. If anyone knows who the fictions within this codex were specifically written by, please let me know so I can credit the correct author. The last codex stories were selected in an order to fit in around my work - sometimes I just didn't have time to record, proof, edit and master a 20 minute episode. In hindsight though, a story emerged through all the pieces from Codex Necrons 3rd edition, and I'm going to go back and put them in the right order when I have time. It's with that in mind I'm going to create and release all the stories from Codex Imperial Guard 3rd edition, should the same happen again. And if not, at least it will be like reading through the whole book in order. In this Episode we celebrate 20 years of the GW game Inquisitor: the Battle for the Emperor's Soul. Written by Gav Thorpe, Jervis Johnson and John Blanche. We'd also like to wish Jervis a happy retirment. Thanks so much guys for all the inspiration. Regular hosts Adam and Alex are joined by George Newbould (GM), Mike Ackroyd (that's Inquisitor Pyotr Machelor to you) and Rob Fellman (Inquisitor-Executioner Oswulf-Tyburn). We (re)introduce you to the shadowy world of the game, introduce Mike and Rob's characters (earlier episodes this season discuss Lars Hermaan [Adam's PC] and Inquisitor Romero Vae [Alex's]) Then its into the campaign: The Heart of Petragard 3 interlinked sprawling games of table top narrative RPG action in M42. This was a whole lot of fun so thank you for listening! If you want to follow along to the narrative game reports our twitter ( @angelcastAOS ) has the scoop with a LOT of photographs of the models on the tables. Seriously excellent terrain thanks to George and Alex and huge thank you to George for writing and GMing the whole thing. The Emperor Protects.
Hello! It is a bonus episode of the podcast! The first of... many? We hope? This aside, where we are going, you won't need hope! Instead, Tom, Drew and James are around the table talking about the mini phenomenon that is Inq28, or Inquisimunda, or just Inquisitor, or... all those other dark, gothic, weird minis that haunt Instagram, just waiting for someone to say "Oh, that's really cool".We have a natter about what it is, and a little bit about the event that we ran in March 2020 (yes, *that* March 2020) as well as other projects, how we got involved and what inspires us.We recorded this a few months back, so things like AoS 3 were just a twinkle in Jervis Johnson's eye, and we were also still in full lockdown. Finally, as a little bonus, you can download the Illuminations of the Idolant Circle lore book/background that we created for our event here:Illuminations (PDF) Hosted on Acast.
