Its position just across the river from Washington made it ideal for detaining captured Confederate soldiers, suspected spies, and civilians accused of disloyalty.Rather than one large prison, Alexandria had several smaller facilities spread across the city. These included converted buildings such as warehouses, a former slave pen (now the Freedom House Museum), and specialised prisons like the Wilkes Street Female Prison for women. Prisoners were often held temporarily before being transferred to larger prisons in Washington.Conditions were typically harsh, with overcrowding, limited supplies, and poor sanitation, although they were not on the same scale as major prison camps like Andersonville Prison. Crime levels fluctuated as war, economic disruption, and the presence of Union troops strained the city. The arrival of large numbers of formerly enslaved people seeking refuge added further pressure on housing and resources and was often, unfairly, linked to crime. Soldiers relied on basic, calorie-rich rations such as bully beef, biscuits, bread, jam, tea, and tinned vegetables, with hot meals from field kitchens when supplies reached the line. Disruptions caused by mud, shellfire, and the German blockade often reduced these comforts, leaving men with cold, repetitive fare like Maconochie stew or pea soup, sometimes made with horsemeat. Send us a textThe Trent Affair With (Chris Lean)In this episode of the American Civil War & UK History podcast, host Daz was joined by fellow reenactor Chris Lean to discuss the Trent Affair.The Trent Affair(1861) was a diplomatic crisis during the American Civil War between the United States and Great Britain. A U.S. Navy ship, the USS San Jacinto, stopped the British mail steamer RMS Trent and captured two Confederate envoys, James Mason and John Slidell, who were on their way to Europe to seek support for the Confederacy. Britain, viewing this as a violation of its neutrality and an affront to its flag, protested angrily and demanded the release of the diplomats.
