Today, she runs USC Builds, a 140-person Rochester contracting firm, and a workforce development nonprofit that Governor Hochul wants to replicate across New York State. In this episode, she gets into what it actually looks like to build a company culture most firms won't even try, what it cost to fire a client who represented a third of her annual revenue, and why the construction industry's labor crisis is a competitive advantage for anyone who started this work early.CHAPTERS00:12 Welcome and the Non-Conformist Oath01:09 How Fitz and Melissa Met at the Jewish Home of Rochester11:25 Why More Americans Should Travel Abroad12:23 Meet USC Builds: 25 Years Building People Through Construction13:31 From History Major to Construction President16:26 Why a Skilled Trade Can Never Be Taken Away19:33 What a Trauma-Informed Workplace Looks Like in Construction27:43 Why She Fired Her Second-Biggest Client Over Racism on the Job Site30:42 The Construction Labor Crisis and Who's Already Positioned to Win34:39 Ascend Workforce Solutions and the Governor's Attention41:20 Trauma as a Superpower42:51 This or ThatCONNECTUSC Builds → https://uscbuilds.comROC Vox → https://rocvox.comNew episodes every Tuesday.Recorded at ROC Vox Recording & Production in Pittsford, NY. The ambience of a Jewish home
The Rebbe explains that repeated delays in shidduchim often stem from a lack of firm resolve to build a home on Torah and mitzvot. Through sincere commitment, modest practice, daily charity, and prayer, the proper match will arrive. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/016/003/5957
Taking time to understand the deeper meaning in our lives. Sunday morning series with Rabbi Ya'akov Trump.
This week's replay, one of the most popular episodes of 2025, features a profound conversation between Barry Barkan, visionary eldercare advocate and Pioneer Network co-founder, and AgingIN CEO Susan Ryan. These longtime friends discuss reimagining aging and the transformative potential of community, spirit, and consciousness. Barkan shares his journey from founding the Live Oak Institute to helping launch the Pioneer Network, driven by a belief that aging is not a problem to solve but a gift to elevate. He recounts his efforts to create a regenerative, inclusive community at the Jewish Home in Oakland—an idea that initially faced rejection but ultimately gained momentum and global influence, including a successful expansion into 15 homes in Israel. But this conversation goes beyond history. Barkan offers a deeply reflective vision for a paradigm shift—a movement from a worldview rooted in domination and separation to one grounded in interconnection, kindness, and sufficiency. He challenges listeners to see humanity as one living being, where every person and every creature matters. Together, Ryan and Barkan explore the concept of "Elder Awesome" and moving beyond traditional notions of "elder care." They also discuss the "Tao of Blessings"—a personal path to leave grace in every encounter Barkan offers his vision for communities and care environments rooted in equity, dignity, and accountability.

B"H According to the Talmud, three things expand a person's consciousness: a beautiful home, a beautiful partner, and beautiful Jewish books. The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that displaying Jewish books proudly reflects our inner spiritual values. One great recommendation? This morning we discuss why, among all the Jewish holidays, Chanukah is the most focused on our home, not synagogue. Based on an insight from Rabbvi Michael Rosenzweig, we explore how the Chanukah conflict, which took place on the battlefield and in the Beit HaMikdash, was essentially a conflict over what would be the values of the Jewish home. Chanukah teaches us that the Jewish home, properly constituted, is the most powerful and successful means of transmitting Judaism. More than forty years ago, as I prepared to ascend the pulpit for my first High Holy Days sermon as a rabbi, one of the elders of my congregation, dear old Arthur Leibowitz, pulled me aside. “Rabbi,” he said to me, “Preach the Dickens at 'em.” I said to him: “OK, Arthur. Just please don't have any great expectations.” American Jews already know, intuitively and rationally, that they are living in the "worst of times." The rise of antisemitism, both in the United States and abroad, and the ongoing, unfolding horror of October 7 and its aftermath, makes that all abundantly clear. But, let me pull back the curtain for you, and show you that in some ways, we are living through the best of times.

Real life is not the news stories. Real life in Israel can be wonderful and simple and full. 10. Just Right – The Story of a Jewish Home Written by Ellen Emerman, illustrated by Sarah Kranz It is a big adventure for Rivkie and her family to move into an empty new house. Soon the moving truck arrives. The furniture, carpets, plants, toys and clothes all get put away in their respective places, and the family starts to feel at home. That is – until Rivkie discovers that something is missing. She leads everyone into each room determined to make everything “just right.” By working together, the whole family helps to put in place all the important, familiar objects that turn an ordinary house into a special Jewish home. Small children will enjoy seeing Shabbos candlesticks in the dining room, Jewish books in the den, tzedakah boxes in the kitchen, and Chanukah menorahs in the living room. When everything seems just right, Rivkie insists that something is still missing. Finally, they all help put up the mezuzahs to finish transforming their new house into a real Jewish home.

We learn from Ya'akov (Jacob), our forefather, that creating a Jewish Home is the highlight of life and not a mere sidelight. It needs preparation as well as physical & spiritual protection. I believe this is a powerful expression of the values of Jewish marriage that fly in the face of the ephemeral values of secular culture. ENJOY! Lots of love, Rabbi Garfinkel of Project 613

The New Jewish Home has been serving elders in New York City since before the Civil War, but CEO Jeffrey Farber knows that even an organization with that kind of longevity needs constant innovation to survive into the future. For more than 15 years, the Jewish Home's Geriatrics Career Development (GCD) program has given teens and young adults in Manhattan and the Bronx the chance to gain practical experience – and certification – in the eldercare field. The benefits aren't just practical for the Jewish Home, which has hired countless graduates from the program, but for the participants themselves, who boast a 99% high school graduation rate. Farber sat down with Susan Ryan to discuss the benefits of the GCD program, as well as the Jewish Home's partnership with The Green House Project to develop a post-acute Center for Excellence – building on momentum gained through GHP's previous cultural transformation work at the Jewish Home's Sarah Neuman campus.
