Our Intergenerational Divergence series is sponsored by our friends Sarala and Danny Turkel. This episode is sponsored by an anonymous friend who supports our mission. In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Yehuda, Bayla, Elisha, and Avi Samter—members of a family that made aliyah from the comfortable Five Towns life a decade ago—about the divergence between Jewish life in America and in Israel. Whether one serves in the IDF has become a major realm of bifurcation within the Jewish People, and it's a gap that we often fail to bridge even within our own social circles. In this episode we discuss:How does making aliyah and entering the army change prior friendships? Why should every Jew imagine the possibility of living an elevated life defending the Jewish People in the Land of Israel? What differentiates Five Towns Judaism from spirituality in the Land of Israel? Tune in to hear a conversation about unifying “both sides” of the Jewish People. Interview begins at 8:02. The Samter family made Aliyah from America and now have two sons serving in the Israel Defense Forces, fighting in the wars over the last 16 months in Gaza and Lebanon.References:Survivor IsraelFor more 18Forty:NEWSLETTER: 18forty.org/joinCALL: (212) 582-1840EMAIL: info@18forty.orgWEBSITE: 18forty.orgIG: @18fortyX: @18_fortyBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/18forty-podcast--4344730/support.

From the Calf, William Gell's attention switches to the Chickens in his 1906 poetic tour of the Island, Mannin Veg Veen. Going round to Port Erin, we look at William Milner's association with it, including the tower on Bradda Head. Though Gell doesn't mention him, we also look at Arnold Bennett, who set a chapter of his 1902 novel, Anna of the Five Towns, in Port Erin, and that was by no means the only work of his set in the village. In a translation into Manx, we're looking at the rather odd tales of the Brothers Grimm, and a disgruntled discharged soldier has collected a motley crew of five people with extraordinary gifts. A king has offered his daughter in marriage to anyone who can beat her in a race, and our ex-soldier puts up one of the band - but if he loses, they both lose their heads!Shoh yn kiaull t'ain y cheayrt shoh -DIAOULEZ AR MENEZ - La quadrature du rondCHRISTINE BREGAZZI - A sea visionMIKE O'CONNOR - The Zeak waltzALTAN - Ma theann tu 'un aonaighCILMERI - CilmeriANNA MURRAY - Traditional wedding reelMONA KERYS - An durzunellMATT CREER - Ny boallyn shohMIKE O'CONNOR - Come to Good
Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of The Chai on Life Podcast. I'm Alex Segal and today, we are speaking with Yaffa Moskowitz, the Director of Education at Midreshet Rachel V'Chaya, a seminary in Jerusalem. Here's a little more about Yaffa: She is a native member the Far Rockaway community and was active in that community and the Five Towns for many years. Yaffa, her husband Danny, and seven children made aliya in the summer of 2013 and now live in Mitzpe Yericho. Yaffa served as teacher and Director of Ateres Seminary for women on the Queens College Campus for 13 years and she was also involved in the Neshei Shor Yoshuv community where she gave chaburas for married women.I met Yaffa when I was a student exactly seven years ago at Midreshet Rachel and have continued to learn from her and with her since. She has such a wealth of knowledge and this conversation really turned into the perfect thing to listen to right in the middle of Elul preparing for the chagim.During this time at Midreshet Rachel, the students learn from the sefer, Tomer Devorah, which teaches us about Hashem's 13 Attributes of Mercy. As we learn about Hashem and understand who He is more, so to speak, we learn how we can emulate Him more in our own lives, and we used that text as the jumping off point for our conversation. As we spoke, we explored:-What a “sin” actually is in Judaism (it may not be what you think) and how we can always get back on track-How to separate ourselves from the sin and retain our confidence and closeness to G-d through the process-How we can get to the core of what emunah really is on the most basic level and use these foundational concepts to connect to Hashem more deeply-The restraint Hashem has with us every day and how we can apply that concept to our own lives and actions-How to work on letting go of control-Why we should speak to ourselves with more compassion from a Torah perspective-When fear is appropriate in Judaism and what kind of fear that actually is talking about-How we can continue to grow and elevate ourselves year after year…and SO MUCH MORE!To learn more about Midreshet Rachel V'Chaya, click here.Special thank you to Tania Friedlander, our first podcast partner! fWotD Episode 2610: Arnold Bennett Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 27 June 2024 is Arnold Bennett.Enoch Arnold Bennett (27 May 1867 – 27 March 1931) was an English author, best known as a novelist who wrote prolifically. Between the 1890s and the 1930s he completed 34 novels, seven volumes of short stories, 13 plays (some in collaboration with other writers), and a daily journal totalling more than a million words. He wrote articles and stories for more than 100 newspapers and periodicals, worked in and briefly ran the Ministry of Information in the First World War, and wrote for the cinema in the 1920s. Sales of his books were substantial, and he was the most financially successful British author of his day.Born into a modest but upwardly mobile family in Hanley, in the Staffordshire Potteries, Bennett was intended by his father, a solicitor, to follow him into the legal profession. He worked for his father before moving to another law firm in London as a clerk aged 21. He became assistant editor and then a women's magazine editor before becoming a full-time author in 1900. Always a devotee of French culture in general and French literature in particular, he moved to Paris in 1903; the relaxed milieu helped him overcome his intense shyness, particularly with women. He spent ten years in France, marrying a Frenchwoman in 1907. In 1912, he moved back to England. He and his wife separated in 1921 and he spent the last years of his life with a new partner, an English actress. He died in 1931 of typhoid fever, having unwisely drunk tap water in France. Many of Bennett's novels and short stories are set in a fictionalised version of the Staffordshire Potteries, which he called The Five Towns. He strongly believed that literature should be accessible to ordinary people and lamented literary cliques and élites. His books appealed to a wide public and sold in large numbers. For this reason and his adherence to realism, writers and supporters of the modernist school, notably Virginia Woolf, belittled him, and his fiction became neglected after his death. During his lifetime his journalistic "self-help" books sold in substantial numbers, and he was also a playwright; he did less well in the theatre than with novels but achieved two considerable successes with Milestones (1912) and The Great Adventure (1913).Studies by Margaret Drabble (1974), John Carey (1992), and others have led to a re-evaluation of Bennett's work. His finest novels, including Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives' Tale (1908), Clayhanger (1910) and Riceyman Steps (1923), are now widely recognised as significant works. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:18 UTC on Thursday, 27 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Arnold Bennett on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

This is a selection of short stories recounting, with gentle satire and tolerant good humour, the small town provincial life at the end of the nineteenth century, based around the six towns in the county of Staffordshire, England, known as the Potteries. Arnold Bennett chose to fictionalize these towns by changing their names and omitting one (Fenton) as he apparently felt that “Five Towns” was more euphonious than “Six Towns”. The real town names which are thinly disguised in the novel are: Hanley, Longton, Burslem and Tunstal, the fifth, Stoke, became “Knype”.Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was born in Hanley, the eldest child of a pawnbroker who subsequently became a solicitor. Bennett's father wished him to become a solicitor too, but he failed his university entrance examination and instead became a solicitor's clerk, at first in his father's office and, from 1889, in London. He showed early promise as a writer winning a writing competition in a local newspaper as a boy. In London he began to see his writing published in popular magazines and he joined the staff of a magazine in 1893.His first novel to be published, A Man from the North, appeared in 1898 and its success allowed him to give up other work to concentrate on writing. His first short story (A Letter Home) was written in 1893 and appears in Tales of the Five Towns.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

"She was a pioneer in the Five Towns community and baruch Hashem still enjoys those around her." How can we understand the debate between Rabbi Yosi and the rabbis in the Mishna regarding stealing that is forbidden on account of theft by rabbinic law or because of darkhei shalom? One loan one's kitchen equipment of those who are suspected of storing shmita produce beyond the permitted time or amei haaretz (who are either suspected of not tithing their produce or of not keeping laws of purity) but there is a distinction between the two regarding helping grind their wheat. Why? Abaye and Rava each bring a different explanation and the Gemara raises several questions against Rava (contradictions from other tannitic sources) and resolves them. They bring another contradiction between two different Mishnas in Demai regarding one who brings his produce to an am haaretz to grind - does one need to be concerned that they switch their produce with their own? In which cases is there a reason for concern and why?

Rivka is an Israeli Haredi political administrator. Since 1999, she has worked for Israeli politician Reuven Rivlin, first as his bureau chief and campaign adviser, and, since his election as President of Israel in 2014, as his chief of staff. She has received extensive media coverage for being a frum mother of 12 in a high-profile political position. Ravitz considers her high-profile position an opportunity to display her religious commitment and make a Kiddush Hashem (sanctification of God's name). She wears modest clothing, and covers her hair with a wig. She does not fraternize with male colleagues or participate in "staff-consolidation days", and refrains from shaking hands when greeting men, in keeping with halacha. During Rivlin's 2015 visit to the Vatican, a photograph showing Pope Francis bowing to Ravitz. Despite it being a high profile visit, the Pope had bowed to her in respect of her religious resilience. During Rivlin's visit to the United States towards the end of his term, President Biden kneeled before Ravitz upon hearing that she is a mother of 12 children. She has incredible stories with Putin, Wonder Woman and other high profile kings, queens and leaders of the world. Dr. Yosef Sokol and a team of researchers have published a study about marriage trends in the frum community. If his data is correct, it would have major repercussions about how to define the Shidduch Crisis, as well as how to solve it. Some people have questioned the results, methodology, and conclusion of Dr. Sokol and his team. In this exclusive interview on the VIN Podcast, Dr Sokol addressed the following questions: How is it possible that the vast majority of Charedi girls eventually get married, when that contradicts the perception of so many people? How does his data change the definition of the shidduch crisis? What is the real cause of the crisis (in his opinion)? Why did he use “self-identification” to determine whether respondents are Charedi, rather than using objective criteria? Why did he choose the term “yeshiva orthodox”, rather than Charedi or yeshivish other terms? How can he be certain that his study reached all segments of the frum community, including Lakewood? How many respondents were there from each community (eg Lakewood, Brooklyn, Five Towns, Monsey, Teaneck, etc) Does he have Rabbinic support? How can we solve the shidduch crisis, according to his research? Dr. Sokol is an assistant professor at Touro, a licensed psychologist, and a Musmach of Yeshiva Bais Yosef in Brooklyn.

A Hollywood screenwriting and movie-making icon, Ernest Lehman penned some of the most memorable scenes to ever grace the silver screen. Hailed by Vanity Fair as “perhaps the greatest screenwriter in history,” Lehman's work on films such as North by Northwest, The King and I, Sabrina, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music helped define a generation of movie making. But while his talent took center stage, the public knew little of Lehman himself, a native of Manhattan's Upper West Side and the Five Towns of Long Island devoted to his wife of 50 years. His relentless perfectionism, hypochondria and all-night writing sessions fueled by tequila and grilled cheese sandwiches were some of the quirks that made Lehman a legend in the Hollywood community. In Ernest Lehman: The Sweet Smell of Success (UP of Kentucky, 2022), author Jon Krampner lays bare the life of this lauded yet elusive character. Moving seamlessly from post-production meetings to sound stages and onto the locations of Lehman's greatest films, Krampner's extensive biography brings to life the genius and singularity of the revered screenwriter's personality and the contributions he made to the world of cinema. Jon Krampner is the author of The Man in the Shadows: Fred Coe and the Golden Age of Television, Female Brando: The Legend of Kim Stanley, and Creamy and Crunchy: An Informal History of Peanut Butter, the All-American Food. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University.
