Ruining Your Childhood - The Pitfalls of Nostalgia

Have you ever made a nice, homemade bowl of your favorite something? Mac n cheese... Chicken noodle soup... Dumplings... Or maybe you don't do "home" made; a bowl of your favorite something is Kraft Dinner, or some Spaghetti-O's... Regardless, have you ever looked down at your bowl of probably gelatinous cuisine and thought to yourself, "this could really use some gold leaf..." Well, this week, we talk the utterly superfluous gold burger, Rob's expensive dinner date, and neoliberalism. Kevin also talks to us about the new novel he's reading called The Three Body Problem. This weeks Thoughts Off The Stem are infused with Nugz Pheno Hunter Pixie Stikz a 27% THC Sativa. For the Prer-Roll I'm smoking the Recliner, Movie Night hash infused blunt, a 29% THC hybrid. These were supposed to help me focus. They did not. They basically turned me into one giant brain fart for the show.Since I was all on my high horse about road rage last Sesh. It got me thinking about all the times us dudes get all agro and like to profess our our ability to kick butt and fight man hunting animals. That's right some times our bravado has us thinking we are the baddest people on the planet. This got me thinking about the time I was told about one individuals confidence in their capabilities to fight a wolf with his bare hands. That's right they thought they could take a wolf. They barely went outside yet killing a wold was easier than making Kraft Dinner in their mind.Let's just set the record straight. You're not killing a wolf with your bare hands. However the topic of this podcast is a list of people who did manage to fight off animals that tried to kill them.Yup my obsession with life continues. These people are definitely tougher than me. I'm pretty sure they are tougher than you and you won't believe the stuff they did to escape the jaws of some of the most ferocious animals on the planet. We've got a guy who bit a python, a woman who fought off a tiger with garden tools, a woman who saved her husband from a mountain lion with a ball point pen, a taxidermist who stangled a cougar and guy who beat up a tiger with his bike. There's a few more on the list but you get the point. We can't be to sure about how tough we really are until we meet that kind of adversity.Since we are discussing a train wreck mindset and reading stories of insanely tough individuals. I thought it would be fitting to tell you a little bit about how this seshisode came to be. It was full of adversity and problems. Took me 5 attempts to record and a mess of a show to sift through to find the better points I made. So hopefully my mistakes and the issues I encountered in creating this sesh give you a little something relatable. I know it's not on the level of being half way down a sharks throat and stabbing your way out, but it's adversity none the less. I hope I made something out of nothing on this one and that you ultimately enjoy the sesh!Don't forget to like the podcast, subscribe to the channel and check out Tots420.com

Welcome to the Food Professor Podcast, Season 4, Episode 2! Our exceptional guest is Gregg Curwin, the President & CEO at Novagevity and their Sperri brand. He's an Ag Tech entrepreneur with a 20-year history of breakthrough thinking, and he's currently focused on the intersection of health, technology, and agriculture. We dive right into the discussion:1. Food Affordability Meetings with Minister Champagne: Michael brings up the recent meetings, likening them to the second Ghost Busters film—similar script, less excitement, and some notable absences. We discuss notable manufacturer absences and insights into what we can expect in the coming weeks. Will there be any discounts on turkey and pumpkins for Halloween? Shrinkflation labels on shelves?2. Bank of Canada's Carbon Tax Inflation Model: Michael inquires about the Bank of Canada sending Sylvain some work on how they arrived at 0.15% inflation for the carbon tax. The Professor gives it a D+3. Stats Canada's Population Report: The discussion then shifts to Stats Canada's latest report on the population, with a surprising focus on temporary foreign workers. Sylvain shares the statistics, highlighting the significant increase in workers with permits. The conversation delves into the implications of this trend on the Canadian population and economy.4. Food Insecurity in Canada: Michael brings up a concerning report from Food Banks Canada, revealing that nearly 7 million Canadians are struggling to put food on the table. 5. KD's Refresh and "Cancel Coverage": Shifting gears, the hosts discuss Kraft Dinner's (KD) refresh in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) world. They also introduced a unique initiative, "Cancel Coverage," to cover restaurant reservation cancellation fees so you can stay home and eat KD!About GreggGregg Curwin has an extensive background in commercializing high-value Ag Tech and health careapplications. Welcome to July 14th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a classic comfort food and the spirit of class.  Macaroni and cheese has become a staple food for kids everywhere. If you're a parent, you're probably sick of being asked to make this dish, but you gotta know you're not alone. Kraft sells one million boxes of mac and cheese. Per day. And Canada buys almost 24% of that total. Up there, it's referred to as Kraft Dinner and some have unofficially called it the country's national meal. It's also popular to put ketchup on it, but don't give your kids any ideas. On National Mac & Cheese Day, whip up a bowl of this classic comfort food, though it may not feel different from any other day, still a celebration is a celebration, right? Everything about the orange flavored liqueur known as Grand Marnier signifies class, elegance and distinction. Made from Caribbean oranges, fine cognac and sugar, this spirit is aged to perfection for nearly 10 years. Since its debut in 1880 the process has changed very little. It first appeared at the Ritz Hotel in Paris and sailed aboard the RMS Titanic. To this day a rescued bottle is found in the Titanic Museum. It was more recently served to Queen Elizabeth II for her Golden Jubilee and today a new bottle is purchased every two seconds. On National Grand Marnier Day, celebrate the spirit that evokes class in everything from cocktails to desserts.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. On today's show, we talked about the first round of the NHL playoffs, spoke to Quads from Canucksarmy about their season, and a whole lot more. Kicking off this week's podcast, we got started with a discussion about the first round of the playoffs and what the Oilers need to do to make sure they get through the LA Kings. Seeing as we all think the Oilers will beat the Kings in round one, we welcomed David Quadrelli from Canucksarmy.com to talk about what we should expect from Vancouver in tonight's season finale and what went on with their season overall. From there, the podcast somehow devolved into a conversation about subs, Kraft Dinner, and other random food choices that had nothing to do about anything. Getting back to the Oilers, we looked at what to expect from the boys tonight against the Canucks seeing as some of the big stars won't be playing. Lastly, we wrapped up this week's podcast with another round of Ask the Idiots and Hot and Cold performers to recap what was a very busy week here in Edmonton.

This episode was created from my heart ♥ for you.Yoda's journey into cooking begins with playing in the dirt at my childhood home in Thorndale, Ontario. I started navigating my way through the restaurant scene, and later became a Red Seal Chef, restaurateur and private caterer. I've always loved food and once I got a taste for professional cooking and entrepreneurship, I always knew this is what I wanted to do with my life!I was raised as your typical 'country' kid... I played in the dirt, always had to help with the chores, and I considered eating cherry tomatoes right off the porch plant an 'after school snack.' I wasn't an incredibly adventurous eater, but was lucky enough to have parents that cared about food. My mom was always a great cook - I have fond memories of making onion buns with her in the winter to go alongside hearty stew (I can still smell those onions!) My dad became a great cook a little later in life, but was always picking carrots out of the ground and encouraging us to take a bite - dirt and all. He has the greatest green-thumb of anyone I know! His garden today is full of meyer lemons, tomatoes of all colours and he even has an avocado tree in his office! If you've ever had food from Yoda's Kitchen, you've had food grown from my dad's garden! My decision to become a chef came to me in my late teens after my parents separated and, after many meals of Kraft Dinner (eek!), my dad and I decided that one of us would have to learn. I took it on as a hobby and quickly realized that I had immense passion for it. I enrolled in Niagara College's Chef Training program that summer and off I went.Fast forward a few years to my apprenticeship under Chef Alfred Estaphan at Sunningdale Golf Course in London. I'd been in the restaurant scene as a line cook at a few different establishments, and I'd begun to find my style as a young chef - I  understood the importance of shopping locally, cooking seasonally and making things from scratch. It was during this time that I decided to do a bit of traveling so I took off to Australia for several months. I made enough money to keep traveling by picking macadamia nuts, making candy with a traveling brittle connoisseur and eventually got a job training under a pastry chef on a huge beach resort with a view of the ocean. It was pure bliss. I was missing home though, and after a short trip across Canada to visit the west coast, I came back and settled in London. While working at some of the city's best restaurants (Braise and The Only on King to name a few) and working part time at Fanshawe College as a lab technician in the Culinary Department, I decided to give catering a go. I developed a business plan in 2010 and it was my Five Year Plan to quit my restaurant job and start catering full time. This dream became a reality in a short 8 months. My dreams were coming true!During my time as a professional caterer, I had the chance to cater so many amazing events, meet many wonderful people and helped change people's lives. Along the way I had many, many challenges, but got to cater some pretty crazy events. I have catered in an open field with no running water or electricity. I've catered on a moving train. I've catered a surprise engagement in the middle of Springbank Park and a walnut fell and shattered one of my dessert plates! I've been blessed to be invited into many of your homes, and will always consider my time as a private caterer as one of the greatest times of my life.In 2016 while my catering company was soaring, I decided to do what no one thought I would do... I opened a restaurant! In May 2016, we opened the doors of Glassroots. During the time Glassroots was open, we achieved many wonderful awards and accolades. We won Our London's "Best Restaurant" and "Best Patio" contest, and we were also named "London's Best Kept Dining Secret" by The London Free Press in their 2017 Reader's Choice contest. It was an interesting 16 months to say the least! I had the most wonderful staff, but restaurant life was incredibly different than catering, and very challenging. You can read more about the full story in my best selling book “Salt and Sour.” (Click here to get your copy)After much thought and soul searching, I decided to leave the restaurant world and return to catering. Before doing so, I took a bunch of time off to work on my book, travel and spend time with family, and in Spring 2018, I relaunched Yoda's Kitchen 2.0! I am currently located at 1010 Dundas Street, behind the Booch retail store. You can currently find me at pop ups around the city, monthly cooking classes at Jill's Table, eating lunch at Curley Brew Co, or delivering Little Green Meals around the city. I love partnering with other local businesses, playing with my dog Gnowee, writing poetry and of course, cooking dinner for friends.Website: https://www.letyodacookforyou.com/ This is a public episode. Today's guest is a true bread artisan, a master bread baker, a trained pastry chef, avid golfer, recipe consultant, chef instructor, and such a nice man! Hailing from north Germany, Chef Thor Pannek talks about his childhood and his journey to become a bread apprentice, a bit later than typically done. In this episode we talk about the unglamorous side of bakeries, wonderful organic food markets, the mathematics involved in baking, and some fun treasured childhood pantry staples from Germany (how do I get a box of Miracoli?!). I really enjoyed hearing about his food journey and I hope you will too. Prost!
