This is our second episode on the topic of pricing strategy - the first of which was Jon Manning in Season 1 which we also recommend you to listen to first. We could only cover so much in the last episode so in this episode we cover some of the other areas to round-out our understanding of how to use pricing strategy as a growth-driver. Any growth strategist worth their salt knows that pricing strategy can't really be isolated from the larger business machine - product, packaging, sales, marketing etc. In particular, pricing and the product offering are inextricably interlinked. So this is where we start the discussion, and as you'll soon hear, Kimberley Haley delves a lot into behavioral economics and packaging strategy. Throughout her career, she's been a pioneer of executing value-based pricing as well as moving the industry past theory and into applied practice. Today she shares with you what she has learned from being on the front lines - including failures and successes along the way. Her experience as a SaaS pricing expert has extended past 15-years and included many different industries, products and services. This makes her a goldmine of information. She knows exactly how to explain how pricing works in practical contexts. While she specializes in mostly software pricing these days, what you'll hear can be applied equally across all sectors - especially services. She isn't a talker - she's a doer. In fact this is her first podcast interview! And Kimberley doesn't disappoint. She explains how each one of her pricing projects is unique, and details how she's both built and implemented profitable pricing models to hundreds of specific use cases in order to maximize returns. This is all commercially sensitive and highly confidential work of course - so none of the famous companies she does this work for can be mentioned, but I do convince her to disclose a bit of her secret sauce. This includes an interesting story about leading a pricing strategy and deal desk team for a $1.7B B2B data & analytics organization that featured over 40 different product lines. Kimberley is someone who has designed pricing strategies to optimize returns for many different sales distribution channels and product lines. This includes, how to redesign discount policies to minimize value erosion, implement renewal programs to improve retention, and how to use quote-to-cash automation to accelerate the sales cycle. What is value - how do you break it down and optimize it? So what is a value-engineer - and why do all the highest growth tech companies in the world hire these roles? How do the companies whose products you use weekly - manipulate your purchase behavior through intentional pricing mechanisms and their superior understanding of behavioral economics? Why are subscription pricing models so hot right now and why are traditional companies experimenting with them? What's the story behind AT&T's packaging which customer's hate, forms the basis of a Southpark episode, but is a roaring commercial success? What are the best pricing books to read? You'll learn all the dirty little secrets of the business world which cause us to buy - more often, and at higher prices than we probably might like to.
Have you ever wondered just how much your pricing actually matters? How about using price as an indicator of quality? SAME. So thanks to our pals at MYOB they've hooked us up with Jon Manning, who's their head of Pricing AND Chief Economist. Throughout his career, Jon has been on a quest to understand the psychology of pricing (and shared his top tips with us today!) and is the author of "Overcoming Floccinaucinihilipilification: Valuing and Monetizing Products and Services" - a book that is as impactful as it is complicated to say. Quick shout out to our friends at MYOB who have our backs and keep this Business Bible show on the road for you all!
Jon Manning is the Head of Pricing / Chief Economist at MYOB and Author of "Overcoming Floccinaucinihilipilification: Valuing and Monetizing Products and Services". His career has been a journey through the most commonly used pricing methodologies: the cryptic world of oil industry pricing, cost-plus pricing in catering & consumer packaged goods, revenue/yield management in aviation, travel & tourism, and dynamic pricing in internet cafes on the High Streets of the EU and USA. In this episode, Jon shares that more than relying on Twitter and Facebook likes, especially with startup companies, it's essential to have a pricing model at the start, so you provide and create value at the onset. He talks about the book and how it tackles the end-to-end journey in the world of value creation, understanding, monetization, and communication of value. Why you have to check out today's podcast: Discover and understand the value-based pricing canvas so you can provide value even at the start of your business Learn to identify the sources of value in your product and services to define your value proposition clearly Find out how you can be focused on value creation but making it more powerful with behavioral economics in consideration "It's all about value, really. So, just make sure you understand the value. And if you're monetizing value you just can't go wrong." - Jon Manning Topics Covered: 01:25 - Talking about Jon's book: Overcoming Floccinaucinihilipilification 03:40 - How does a crowdsourcing website work for Pricing Prophets? 06:35 - What is a value-based pricing canvas as the main gist of Jon's book 08:30 - How each cell in a canvas work 10:34 - Talking about the internal pricing processes and customer-facing processes in the pricing canvas 13:18 - Where creating value appears in the book 15:28 - Talking about the second half of the book about customer value analysis 16:43 - Why Jon put behavioral economics at the last part of the book 20:24 - Sharing an exciting experience where behavioral economics is concerned 21:36 - What got Jon started in Pricing 22:38 - The best pricing advice Jon shares that can have a significant impact in your business Key Takeaways: “What's really been interesting is that sort of six, seven years down the track, when I go into those workshops now, nine out of 10 businesses do have a pricing model when they start. They realize they provide value from day one.” - Jon Manning “The first part of the book is to make use of the canvas to identify the sources of value in your product or service. And that's a collection of approximately about 15 quadrants which will help you be able to clearly define your value proposition, the economic value you provide, how you stack up against the competition and things like that.” - Jon Manning “The second half of the book then says, okay, let's take your understanding of value now. And let's actually strike a price point for you based on one of four value-based pricing methodologies. So, it's a sort of end-to-end journey.” - Jon Manning “One of the methodologies I walked through in the second half of the book is customer value analysis. And I only talk about a very basic version of customer value analysis, but just through that exercise, and other methodologies that other authors have written about, you can quickly identify features that should be included or excluded from a package if you're asking the right questions to customers.” - Jon Manning “I like behavioral economics, it is useful. I agree that it should be value first, behavioral economics second, but it can also be powerful at the same time.” - Jon Manning People/Resources mentioned: Overcoming Floccinaucinihilipilification: Valuing and Monetizing Products and Services by Jon Manning Zen Ore 99 Designs Connect with Jon Manning: https://pricingprophets.com/ LinkedIn Connect with Mark Stiving: Email: mark@impactpricing.com LinkedIn

Pricing is one of the 4 P's of marketing. Before the bean-counters and financial analysts took over this domain, pricing sat firmly in the remit of the marketing department. Then the great purge happened and each of the other P's peeled off from marketing, fragmenting the critical strategic marketing discipline. There only so much that can be done by looking at spreadsheets and creating economic models. What was lost, was an understanding of how customer value manifests itself - the irrationality - the art. Jon Manning is here to restore that connection, as he leverages his deep knowledge of economics, finance and marketing. By default, the large majority of businesses will use a cost-plus pricing strategy which is a legacy pricing method, firmly rooted in product manufacturing. While there's a lot of cross-over with the product domain, this episode discusses pricing strategies for services almost exclusively. Jon's worked for many sectors including, petroleum, airlines, internet cafes, SaaS and more. As the founder of outsourced pricing strategy consultancy marketplace, Pricing Prophets, there isn't much he hasn't been exposed to. So we needed to hear the best ways to price our product offering and the mistakes to avoid. He cleverly wraps many stories and real-life examples from his career into the mix. Even pricing novices will be able to understand the concepts that we're discussing. Have a listen and I'm sure there's a follow up on the cards. For all references, mentions and trailers go here

Special Episode: This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week which aims for everyone to open up and talk about their mental health, while reducing the stigma that can stop people from asking for help. This year's theme focuses on 'Kindness' so we were pleased when Jon Manning from Arthur Ellis asked to interview Scott Jones, CEO of 123 Internet Group. The UK is in a mental health crisis. It is becoming more and more difficult to access mental health services and in some cases, just to see a GP.With thresholds to access these specialist services increasing as well as referrals going up by 300% in some areas of the country, it's becoming more and more difficult to get help. As a result; Only 1 in every 8 adults receive treatment for their mental health and only 3% of that eighth receive psychological therapy. Nationally, 75% of children and young people are unable to access support at all. That's where Arthur Ellis and our mission to help the nation become #IndependentFromIllness comes in…Support the show (https://www.123internet.agency/podcasts)

Jon Manning started Arthur Ellis in 2017, naming this movement after his Grandfathers. Arthur Manning and Ellis Graham. Ellis suffered with Schizoaffective Disorder. Without anyone knowing how to deal with this enduring illness, Ellis deteriorated to the degree where he sadly spent most of his life in hospital. After Jon suffered with a mental illness for 20 years without being able to access meaningful support, he decided to set up Arthur Ellis to change the way we see and support mental health. To ensure that we create a culture where if someone is experiencing any difficulties, we individually have the knowledge to practically help. In this episode Jon shares his on story and struggling with mental health and how one incident changed the way he viewed how to manage his mental health. He now uses his journey and message to help others with his lead role at Arthur Ellis: Mental Health Support. He does this by training schools, businesses and other organisations in the use of evidence-based, practical tools, strategies and methods to improve mental health directly, alleviating pressures on the services and creating a country that is #IndependentFromIllness. Over the last few years, we have seen a huge increase of referrals into specialist mental health services which are now unable to cope. Referrals have increased by 300% in some areas of the country. Alongside a lack of funding, around 75% of children and young people that are referred are denied from accessing these services. There simply isn't room! So why are we relying on signposting?? 10% of children and young people between the ages of 5 and 16 years old have a diagnosable mental health problem but 70% are unable to access the appropriate intervention. With 50% of mental health issues being established by the time our children are 14, early intervention is key. This lack of support or lengthy wait for support leads to mental health issues getting further embedded as we grow older with 75% of mental health conditions established by 24 years old. With over 110,000 children in this position of not accessing help last year, Arthur Ellis are improving the mental health of children and young people in the UK with our 1:1 Mentoring service which provides children with 8 sessions of 1:1 support with a qualified and trained Mentor. Where we can help that child or young person learn positive strategies and discuss their issues to help them long term into adolescents or even adulthood. We want our service to be there for these children and families within 48 hours of receiving their referral and to develop into a free, nationwide support system for these children and families who are currently unable to access help. In addition to providing companies with our training and support, we support adults with paid sessions which fund children's sessions. We also work with amazing companies and organisations to sponsor children that we work with to ensure they get meaningful support when they need it! An also and award-winning Social Entrepreneur, Keynote Speaker and normal chap changing the way the nation sees, prevents, manages and supports mental ill health. Debt can be a crippling thing for anyone, and documentary filmmakers are no exception. In fact, it's we independent filmmakers who are often hit in particular with the ugly debt stick. The kids' daycare, medical bills, rent, a new camera for a project. The reasons an independent filmmaker can find themselves in debt are plenty. But must we all continue romanticising this notion of the starving artist or is there, perhaps, a healthier, more satisfying way to live as an independent documentary filmmaker? I say it's time to put an end to that rather unnecessary (immature?) way of thinking. I say that we can all make some better, more informed choices about how our personal finances should and should not affect our personal and professional lives. And the first segment of episode 31 is about just that – finding ways in which we can all lead more sustainable doc lives. Podcast Conversation In our shared conversation with a documentary industry guest segment, we talk with director, http://brightwatermedia.com/ (Jon Manning), who recently released his film Burlesque: Heart of the Glitter Tribe, a film that is currently on Netflix. In this episode, you will learn: why Jon believes pricing is more of an a art than a science. why pricing is based on human behavior that no scientific model can predict. why there’s no such thing as Adam Smith’s Invisible Hand. that 70% to 80% of companies use cost-based methods to set prices and few use a value-based method. why customers don’t care about companies who use cost-based pricing and prefer companies that use value-based pricing methods. why the best pricing strategy for a company is a value-based method. the trials and tribulations of the pricing strategy adopted by Netflix and how it affected its share price. how a $40 fine for returning a DVD late led to the founding of Netflix. if the best strategy for companies to announce price increases to its customers is to do so a few years in advance. how behavioral economics is opening up a minefield of exploration in pricing. how Apple used anchoring techniques to sell their iWatch by offering a $10,000 iWatch. It makes the mainstream iWatch appear to be value for money. how a $100 omelette was used by a restaurant to act as a decoy so it can influence your decision to pay for high-end or expensive goods. and much more.
