Breaking down the barriers to inclusive employment opportunities is proving to be a challenge. But progress is being made and what that looks like is one of the things I'm discussing in this week's episode with my guest Vinny De Falco from Think Forward. We talk about the programs that Think Forward have previously run, what they learned from those and how that information has guided their next program. We also discuss how to engage with employers and the external factors that also impact on the number of opportunities available. To bring about change means acting, learning along the way and changing what does not work and that is exactly what Think Forward is doing. https://thinkforward.org.uk/
The transition from education to employment for young people with additional needs requires planning in order to be effective. Canada isn't the only nation squeezed by the symptoms of generational unfairness, and Gen Squeeze isn't the only organization squeezing back. To kick off our "We're not alone" miniseries, Paul Kershaw and Angie Chan spoke with Tom Walker, lead economist at Think Forward in Australia. Down under, Tom explains that younger generations are "doing it tough" too, faced with unaffordable housing, rising living and education costs, precarious jobs with declining wages, extreme weather -- all set against an ominous backdrop of one global crisis after another. Tom tells us how his organization is pushing for a parliamentary inquiry and a more fair tax system to invest in the collective wellbeing of young and old alike. "There's something that sits above all this: that persistent short-termism in our government outlook and the policy they make, and their lack of ability or courage to do meaningful reform to address any of these things," Tom says. "And an economic system which supports [older] people who are already wealthy... if you dump all your money into property, you pay less tax than someone who's working." Think Forward is the first voice we'll be bringing you from our international coalition of generational fairness champions, which launched the inaugural worldwide Intergenerational Fairness Day last month. Stay tuned for more! Learn more: Think Forward Our recap of Intergenerational Fairness Day Intergenerational Fairness Day coalition podcast

For a lot of people, what they want and what they expect can be two very different things. This may include those in their 30s and 40s who want to be able to retire but don't expect they'll be able to. Dr. Jennice Vilhauer is a psychologist, author, and the developer of Future Directed Therapy. On today's Retire Sooner, she lends her expertise around activating a future-connected mindset to explain ways people can help themselves work toward what they want in life. Wes and Dr. Vilhauer go over depression's effect on thinking about the future, exercises in flipping negative thinking to positive, and the importance of mindfulness. Wes says that more than anyone he's ever met, Dr. Vilhauer has sold him on mindful meditation and discusses her best-selling book, "Think Forward to Thrive: How to Use the Mind's Power of Anticipation to Transcend Your Past and Transform Your Life." Just when you think you might have social media figured out, it changes notably on every level. This is a reality that marketers have to accept. Once they do, however, they will also realize they can still do much to ensure their brands stay ahead of the curve and top of mind. What can we expect from social media in the next 12 months? It's among the questions marketers would most love answered. This podcast highlights findings from the Think Forward 2023 report from We Are Social, part of the Plus Company network. During this podcast, We Are Social's Mobbie Nazir and Devon Vipond – armed with some powerful trends as gleaned from the socially led creative agency's Think Forward 2023 report – share counsel to help marketers do just that. The duo shares three main takeaways to start – all of them directly tied to search: -People want search to be less precise and more exploratory. (Nazir cites this – “textured discovery” – as her favorite trend.) -There is broad disillusionment with old forms of search -Search is more about curating information, not collecting it When asked to identify her favorite trend, Vipond chooses “expanded identities.” As AR and VR become more prominent on social, she explains, whole new avenues for identity expression open up for everyone. The noteworthiness of this trend is only heightened by this stat shared by Vipond: 60% of Gen-Z feels their online identity is more important that their offline identity.Click here to access We Are Social's Think Forward 2023 report.

Why are we able to make some of our dreams happen and not others? Same person, same life… but for some reason, some dreams seem so far away…? Our brain plays an essential role in our successes as well as in our failures and wouldn't it be great to understand how to manage it to increase our human potential? Well, this episode is a little eye-opener on the power of your brain on your achievements and how you can direct your mind to increase your chances of winning in this game of life. Dr. Jennice Vilhauer, is a psychologist in Los Angeles, the developer of Future Directed Therapy (FDT), and the author of the book Think Forward to Thrive. She has held numerous leadership roles as the director of the Outpatient Psychotherapy Programs at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, GA, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and as a managing consultant at Korn Ferry International. She is a featured expert for the magazine Psychology Today, and she has almost two decades of experience helping clients recover from depression and regain their emotional well-being. Dr. Vilhauer received her undergraduate degree in psychology at UCLA and her doctorate degree at Fordham University in New York City, and she completed her postdoctoral training in clinical research at Columbia University. And I had the honour to interview her and pick her brain on how to reformat our brain to believe and expect that we can achieve what we really want;) https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennicevilhauer/ https://www.futuredirectedtherapy.com/ WATCH Jennice's TED talk! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JBonpUMl8o

Featured Recipe for this Episode (Updated 03/29/2022) Sauce: 1/2 c chicken stock 1/2 c vegetable stock 1/2 c reduced sodium soy sauce 1/2 c hoisin sauce 3 T fresh ginger, minced 4 T fresh garlic, minced 2 T hot red peppers, chopped 1/2 c rice vinegar 3 T dark brown sugar 2 T tomato paste 1-1/2 t sesame oil Slurry: 2 t cornstarch 1/4 c cold water Batter: 2/3 c AP flour 1-1/3 c rice flour 2/3 c corn starch 1-1/2 c water, more to desired consistency 4 lbs chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces Oil for deep frying Deep frying thermometer Basmati rice, prepared as directed 2 T hot red peppers, chopped 4 T scallions, chopped Begin by adding your sauce ingredients except for the sesame oil to a large saucepan/pot and bringing them to a simmer over mid heat. Let the sauce simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring regularly. Add half of your sesame oil, and more to taste- a little goes a long way. Use an immersion blender to blend it down into a sauce (you can also transfer it to a normal blender). Stir your cold water and cornstarch together in a small bowl to form a slurry, then add it to the saucepan. Stir the sauce together; it will thicken up with the addition of the slurry. Cook for an additional minute or two to cook out the cornstarch flavor. Remove from the heat and set aside. When you're ready to start cooking, place a large Dutch oven or stock pot on the stove and add your oil. Add your deep fry thermometer on the side of the pot if you have one. Turn on mid-high and begin heating the oil. Combine your flours and cornstarch together in a bowl and whisk until combined. Add your water in, stirring constantly until this has a nice, thick, batter-like consistency (it should be thicker than waffle batter but still runny; it shouldn't form a super thick layer on your chicken). Add your chicken to the bowl. Stir until well-combined and the chicken is well-coated (the batter should be thick it will not have an issue). Once your oil hits 350° or once a drop of batter dropped in pops back to the surface and floats after 1-2 seconds, it is ready. Add your chicken in batches (I did four), cooking it for about 2-3 minutes, being sure to break up any chicken that is clumped together (add it a piece at a time to save yourself the trouble of unsticking them later). Remove the chicken and rest. Heat your oil to 375°. Add the chicken back to your oil and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until it is a very crispy golden brown- I had to do this in two batches. Remove the oil from the heat and place your chicken on a paper towel-lined platter or a drying rack to rest. Return the saucepan with your sauce to the heat and heat to mid. Once it starts simmering around the edges, add your chicken and toss to coat all over in the sauce. Add the chopped scallions and red peppers and toss it with the chicken coated in sauce. Serve the chicken over basmati rice. Important Links (All links open in a new window) Main Website Subscribe on Patreon! Livestream for the Cure Join my Discord Community! Professional development efforts, including sharpening interpersonal communication skills and seeking out a mentor, are oftentimes an afterthought in contrast with the daily demands in our professions. But despite what cynics may claim, ROI isn't always quantitative. Research proves that ‘soft' skills are just as important as ‘hard' skills in today's competitive business environment. Harnessing these skills enables communications professionals to be better equipped to ‘Think Forward,' which was the 2019 theme of the annual IABC World Conference. Marketing + Communications Manager and IABC Houston President-Elect, Hayley Ross, joins The Business Communicators to discuss this topic and key takeaways from the event, sharing how we can apply these best practices in our day-to-day routines. In this episode, we'll rediscover the lost art of interpersonal communication and apply those best practices in ‘thinking forward' for sharpening the professional mindset: Cultivating a mindset of ‘thinking forward' – what does it mean and how do I adopt this? Navigating unexpected change – beyond just acclimating to a new reality – that fosters professional and personal growth Engaging and connecting in meaningful communication while living in a world of 24x7 digital distractions You'll also hear Millennial communications professionals' anecdotal reflections on college-to-career transitions 10 years later – including their surprises along the way! Sponsor HRmeetup: "transforma bxl", L'Hôtel "Le Plaza Bruxelles", "The Podcast Factory Org" (ASBL-VZW)
