Jill is so excited to finally have Kari Azuma on the show! Kari is a certified coach and what she calls an “intuitive nervous system surgeon,” and she joins Jill to discuss what it takes to feel safe and resilient, stressing that it is not about trying to fix yourself but rather acknowledging yourself. She also introduces her upcoming Foundations of Safety course and vision quests, designed to help women reconnect with themselves, so whether you are feeling stuck in old patterns or simply looking for more ease in your life, Jill invites you to listen to this conversation which offers a great perspective on what it really means to create safety in your life! Crossing the Threshold to Motherhood: Ceremony, Ritual, and Healing Rites of Passage With Kari Azuma

Startup Parent

#116 — Crossing the Threshold to Motherhood: Ceremony, Ritual, and Healing Rites of Passage How do you prepare for birthing another child when your first birth experience was traumatic? Can new mothers be realistically expected to process and integrate their birth and transformation experience when they work up until 40 weeks and are back just a few weeks later? How can we create space, ceremony, and ritual to promote healing, integration, and to fully honor women crossing the threshold into motherhood? Kari Azuma was a successful leadership coach for five years before the traumatic birth of her son in 2015. Navigating and healing from her postpartum depression and “full-blown identity crisis” were among the most challenging experiences of her life, but also inform what she views as her life’s work: reigniting the view of motherhood as a rite of passage—full of ceremony, healing, and powerful ritual—for Western mothers. She also makes the spiritual case for paid leave: motherhood is a profound transition that we simply cannot prepare for when working up until we give birth. Kari believes that much of the trauma we experience in birth as well as the postpartum depression and anxiety is at least partly to blame on the negligible space we give women on either side of their births. In other cultures, rites of passages are demarcated by space leading up to the transition to emotionally and spiritually prepare. This time is filled with ceremony and ritual and ideally, allows the woman to cross the threshold to new mother and give birth in a fully embodied, empowered way. We speak to Kari at 37 weeks pregnant with her second child, a daughter, and learn about all of the healing work she has done personally over the past three years and how that has profoundly influenced the type of coaching work she does now. We get to hear about the ritual and ceremony she is creating in her own life leading up to her second birth and how we might incorporate this type of slow, quiet, space for ourselves. IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT How Kari is creating space in her life for ceremony leading up to the birth of her second child. How her desire to have a home birth and her birth expectations with her first child turned deeply traumatic when she ended up with her “worst nightmare” of a hospital c-section. The ways in which having a traumatic birth opened a new portal for her and the work she feels called to do, guiding women through the passage to motherhood. How she spent three years healing, processing, integrating the birth experience, the death of her old self, and her own birth as a mother. The ways in which she is navigating holding hope and setting intentions for the birth of her daughter with a planned VBAC at home, while simultaneously releasing the idea that she can control or fight her way to a preferred birth experience. The spiritual case for paid leave or why Kari believes that some postnatal anxiety and depression can be linked to how little time and space we give mothers to slow down and prepare on deeper levels for the birth of their children. How she helps clients honor this transition to motherhood through traditional rites of passage ceremonies and rituals. How hard it can be to ask for and step into open space before birth when we are used to pushing hard and driving projects forward. The counterintuitive healing power of being in a space with people who aren’t expecting you to heal. How severing one’s past self and incorporating one’s vision for oneself as a mother are some of the crucial parts of becoming a mother that Western culture is missing today. How a coach of pregnant and new mothers balances business with her own pregnancy and maternity leave. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/startuppregnant/message

On this episode I chat with Kari Azuma, a coach and a mother who you may remember me mentioning on episode 3, as the facilitator of the Threshold Retreat that Estelle and I embarked on last year. Kari has been such a powerful mentor for me on all things motherhood, reconnecting me with the sacredness and ceremony of this transition that our society fails to create space for. The way she brings her leadership experience and roots in rites of passage to the motherhood experience is something I believe every mother should benefit from, and I’m thrilled to have her on the show. A bit about Kari: Since 2010, Kari Azuma has been blessed to coach board members of influential companies, entrepreneurs, coaches, and leaders in the health and wellness sectors. It wasn’t until suffering from postpartum depression and a full-blown identity crisis after the birth of her son in 2015, that she decided to dedicate her life’s work to coaching mothers on leadership development and overcoming stress and overwhelm through powerful self-realization. She works with mothers through social media, private sessions, and her elite group-coaching model, Empowered Mothers Alliance. Her latest love endeavor, Threshold, is a retreat that was born from her roots in rites of passage work. This immersive, in-person experience allows mothers to powerfully reclaim their identity through releasing shame, expectations and lineage patterns, freeing themselves to design the lives of their choosing as women and mothers. Through Kari’s work with mothers and expectant mothers, she hopes to fulfill on her mission to create a legacy of empowered mothers, leading the next 7 generations.   Connect with Kari: Website | https://kariazuma.com/ Threshold Retreat | https://rise.kariazuma.com/threshold Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/kariazuma/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/kariazuma/   Connect with Tara: Website | https://taracaetano.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/taracaetano/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/taracaetano/ Subscribe to the mailing list | http://eepurl.com/gctilH   Show Notes |https://bit.ly/2Hxpt2S

In October 2018, I said yes to attending a women’s retreat specifically for mothers. The retreat, called ‘Threshold’ and hosted by Kari Azuma, is a mother’s rite of passage retreat, an immersive experience of womanhood and motherhood that held space for mothers to cross the threshold of motherhood with dignity and power, healing our lineage, ourselves, our relationship with the feminine and defining our legacy as women. On this episode I sit down with Estelle Spano, a fellow mother’s coach who experienced the retreat alongside me, to share the power of this investment in ourselves, and how it’s transformed our motherhood experience to dat, so that you too may be inspired to invest in your own motherhood journey and be held and supported in the way your soul is asking for.   A bit about Estelle:   Estelle is a Mother to her three year old daughter Scarlett and it is her mission to support mothers in coming back to the deep knowing and remembering of their essence. She is a Certified Coach for Mothers who is passionate about supporting them to step into their power in all areas of their life, providing a relatable, uplifting, supportive coaching experience for Mothers to change their mindset, overcome blocks and truly lead with Grace and Passion.      Connect with Estelle: Website | https://metanoiamama.com.au/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/metanoia.mama/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/metanoiamamahome/   Connect with Tara: Website | https://taracaetano.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/taracaetano/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/taracaetano/ Subscribe to the mailing list | http://eepurl.com/gctilH   Show Notes | https://bit.ly/2VBLQXP

Ep 53: Movement, Mantras and Motherhood with Erin Stutland

Mother's Quest Podcast

I’m thrilled to share this episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with mother, coach, entrepreneur and mind-body wellness expert Erin Stutland. Through her signature Shrink Session workouts and Soul Strolls, which combine principles from dance, yoga, meditation and more, Erin helps over 70,000 people in 155 countries to transform negative thinking into possibility and tap into their own inner strength.  I bring this episode to you as I participate in Erin’s free five day movement and mantra challenge. I first discovered this challenge three years ago, and ever since, her inspiring videos have become a key part of my morning practice. So, it was surreal in the best way, when I had the opportunity to talk live with Erin about movement, motherhood and her own E.P.I.C. life.  The ability to embody leadership, to create movement in our bodies and our lives, is the gift that Erin brings to all those she reaches through her products, programs, and soon-to-be-published book Mantras in Motion. In this conversation, I loved learning about how Erin developed these gifts from an early age, growing up in Chicago where her own mother allowed her the freedom and permission to move, play and pursue her passion for dance. Recently a mother herself, Erin brings this awareness and the gift of movement to her own baby daughter.  There was a lightness and grounding quality in talking with Erin that I so appreciated, as we explored everything from the lesson she learned about leadership while shepherding goats in Israel to how she brought her whole self and integrity to hosting a reality television show.  I was grateful to be immersed in Erin’s perspective and challenge this week, which coincided with our mid-term elections in the United States. On election day in particular, I noticed my anxiety rising, and was able to consciously transform Erin’s movement mantra of the morning “This is my time,” to “This is our time,” envisioning the progressive leaders I supported successfully winning their elections.  That invitation to change my “inner landscape” as Erin calls it, through mantra and movement, made a huge difference in my outlook. A day later as I record this, I’m sitting with mixed feelings about the outcome of the election, but also a determination to move into action.  I hope after listening today, that you, like me, are inspired by the lessons Erin has shared with us and the gift of her Soul Stroll, to get moving and stay moving toward the change in our lives and in our country that we seek.  Much appreciation,  P.S. Know someone who you think would appreciate this episode? Push forward and share this conversation! In This Episode We Talk About: Favorite mantras that Erin and I brought to this episode as our intentions for the conversation. The importance of guiding from behind and moving our own egos out of the way when we parent (and what this has to do with goats!) The power of MOVEMENT in our lives and the impact of shifting our inner landscapes. How using movement can help us be more present for our children. Why a body at rest stays at rest, and moving is often the last thing we want to do. But, our lack of desire to get moving is not a reflection of how we’ll feel once we get going.   Bringing consciousness to how we invest and care for ourselves and why it’s natural to make different kinds of investments at different times in our lives. Erin’s soon to be published book – “Mantras in Motion” What to do when you’re feeling stuck, anxious, or depressed Erin’s challenge and gift to us to make time for a “Soul Stroll” The story I shared with Erin about Jacob and Taekwondo that she says she’ll remember Resources and Topics Mentioned: Ep 52: Third Chapters, Raising Adults, and Loving Ourselves with Julie Lythcott-Haims Ep 38: Making Space and Finding Rhythm with “Kindie Rock” Star Laurie Berkner Ep 51: Equanimity & The Calm In the Storm with Mindful Parent Michelle Gale Say It. I’m excited to share this episode #22 with Kalika Yap, a serial entrepreneur, inventor, intentional mother, and business leader. She’s received tremendous recognition for her accomplishments, including being honored by the Anti-Defamation League, serving as a panelist with Magic Johnson on an Urban Economic Forum hosted by the Obama White House, and currently leading as the President of Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Los Angeles Chapter. Kalika is from more humble beginnings. She came from a big family born in the Philippines in the time of Martial Law that then moved to a low income community in Hawaii. Growing up, she had strong influences from her mother who is a teacher and her father who is an entrepreneur. Along with her husband, she now imparts these family influences or “Ohana” and a focus on “Core Values”  to her two daughters, 10 and 8 years old. She's currently starting a company with her daughters, prompted by a school project, called Conscious Kids, a mindfulness resource for children. Believing that children have eyes all around and a unique perspective, she engages her daughters in defining the core values of their business and encourages them to explore their creativity. Her current mission, through her branded commerce start-up, Orange and Bergamot, is to help 1 million businesses succeed and in turn create 1 million jobs by developing amazing brands. She shares about what helps her achieve ambitious goals like these while being present for her family: reaching out to others, being part of a tribe, being willing to ask for help, and developing “Keystone Habits,” like meditation. Ultimately, she believes that the destination is the journey, and that the purpose of her life is to find joy and happiness while serving others. We covered a lot of ground in this interview and I felt like I filled my E.P.I.C. Life Toolkit with powerful strategies: to focus on values, develop keystone habits, and consciously choose a life of service. I left the conversation inspired by Kalika to pursue our entrepreneurial dreams and empower other women to do the same, all while being a present and intentional parent.
