Drum & Bass approaches the 2000s on the brink of disaster: the spirit has left the music, eaten up by the major labels and the money. Kemistry's death has torn a hole in the heart of the community. So how do you recover from that? The combined optimism of a fresh wave of young talent and an old guard, ready to be revitalised, creates a new, exciting form of D&B – ready to deliver the music to new audiences and new heights.
As jungle rapidly morphs, a groundbreaking new record label and club night becomes a nerve centre for this dynamic new movement: Metalheadz, founded by Goldie, Kemistry and DJ Storm is as wild and innovative as the DJs and producers who created it. Revellers flock to a tiny basement club in Hoxton Square, each week, to hear this new sound taking shape. But with the increased exposure, the first bad press begins making its mark on the scene, forcing an identity crisis for the original junglists.
Last year, South Korea's Extra Noir asked “What links a mall Santa in Singapore with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak? Scottish bard Robert Burns and Tales from the Crypt? What connects a cry for love in the industrial heart of Seoul with Algernon Blackwood spiking a batch of eggnog?” The answer, of course, was their Christmas charity compilation, Noël Noir. This holiday season, the label has combined some of the best selections from that release with new contributions for a limited-edition cassette. The year's hottest stocking stuffer contains wintry atmospherics and seasonal spooks from JD Twitch's ambient alias Tomorrow The Rain Will Fall Upwards, Salamanda, Xander Harris, Jaeho Hwang, Heejin Jang and more. For our 905th RA Podcast, we're proud to welcome Goldie, one of the most famous, talented and important electronic music artists of all time. Starting out as a graffiti artist, he eventually made music under the name Rufige Kru, helping push the then-nascent genre of jungle forward with tracks like "Krisp Biscuit (Power)" and "Terminator." The latter was released under the name Metalheads, which would later become the name of his label (with a z instead of an s). Metalheadz—which he cofounded with DJ Storm and the late Kemistry—celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and remains the defining outlet of drum & bass, the genre that grew out of jungle that Goldie helped invent with records like 1995's massive crossover album Timeless (alongside countless other classics). He's a producer, DJ, actor and all-around celebrity, a huge personality in UK electronic music. Goldie is also RA's guest curator this month, and his tenure starts with this mix. We'll have more to come starting this week—check our editor's letter later today for more information—but for now, here's a survey of drum & bass past and present from a man who helped invent the genre. With plenty of new Metalheadz material plus a healthy dose of older tracks, these two hours lay out the history of Metalheadz, drum & bass and its various subgenres, from twinkling liquid to rumbling techstep. It's the first part of a month celebrating Goldie's legacy, and we can't wait to show you the rest. @goldie-official Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/905

Goldie is a music legend; a producer and DJ, graffiti artist and actor, instantly recognisable for wearing gold grills on his teeth. In the 90's he became a pioneer of jungle and drum and bass music in the UK and launched the now legendary music label Metalheadz with DJ duo Kemistry & Storm. He released his ground breaking album Timeless in 1995, which went on to sell 250,000 copies. He dated Björk and Naomi Campbell. His success was immense and his impact and influence hasn't stopped since. Born Clifford Joseph Price to a Jamaican father and Scottish mother, Goldie was raised in children's homes and foster families from the age of 4. During his time in care, he was physically and sexually abused, which he discusses here. The man Annie speaks to today has sought to heal from his past and tells us how. He now lives with his wife and youngest daughter in Thailand and spoke to Annie from there about the many twists and turns in his life.Goldie's two memoirs can be bought here:https://www.waterstones.com/book/all-things-remembered/goldie/9780571332090https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nine-Lives-Goldie/dp/0340824786Should you be affected by any of the issues raised in this episode, in the UK, The Samaritans can be reached on 116 123. Episode 038 with Justin Martin Video Version: https://youtu.be/tsmSWtnKs9A Justin Martin is a San Francisco-based house DJ and producer whose best tracks and remixes tend to be lean, finely melodic, and a little playful. He debuted with the 2003 single "The Sad Piano." Released on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label, played by Derrick Carter and Pete Tong, and licensed by Steve Bug, the single got Martin's recording career off to an impressive start. Additional singles for Buzzin' Fly and Utensil were out by the time Martin and Claude VonStroke co-founded the Dirtybird label, an outlet for both producers' solo tracks, Martin's partnership with Christian Martin (as Martin Brothers), and other artists such as Ardalan. Martin's debut album, Ghettos & Gardens, was released on Dirtybird in 2012 with new productions, a handful of remixes, and a "remake" of Goldie's "Kemistry" all part of the program. Justin moved away from dirty bird pursue in his new sound and focus on his productions. With this Justin had started his own label, whilst not ready yet, Justin continues to put the hard work into his new label by doing all the designing, editing, organizing you name it, his 100% effort has started and will continue to grow his label. On this episode #127, Le Catalyste Standalone Series receives Mx.Tactful for a weird idm-braintech-electro set with lots of validated references with the regretted Mira Calix, and some other women that strongly marked the electronic music scene like Andrea Parker, K-hand, Ixindamix and Dasha Rush to name a few. This name dropping shall easily makes you imagine how vast is the eclecticism of this set and how strong will be the intensity of the journey! Mx.Tactful is one of many to have come of age in the thick of UK rave culture. As she and her friends got sick of dodging police and bad pills, they retreated to the smokey clubs and bedroom studios that could still offer respite from post-thatcher chaos. While some of her friends had found moderate success by the late '90s, Mx.Tactful's music stayed largely unheard. This all changed after a chance encounter in a welfare office led to the release of 'MARGIN MACHINEs' on Table Jelly Dishes; a new label from Lara David aka Chekov. Table Jelly Dishes is a new home for hyperkinetic techno and punchdrunk pop, curated by Lara David off the back of releases on Peach Discs and Cong Burn. Few nicknames in dance music have been as rightfully earned as DJ Storm's "First Lady of Drum & Bass." It all began in early 90s London, when she discovered the weird and wonderful world of UK rave. By the end of the decade, Storm and her friend Kemistry had become the quiet force behind Goldie’s Metalheadz empire. As part of the 2018 CTM Festival in Berlin, she sat down for an inspiring conversation about the joys of the mix and the trials and tribulations of maintaining a DJing career.
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Hot Air podcast. This time around we have a conversation with a very special DJ who, over the years, has had a huge impact on not only the Drum & Bass scene, with which they are mainly connected, but on electronic music as a whole. But, as well as this, our guest today played a big part in my own journey and was hugely influential on me as I was first getting into dance music many years ago, so this is a very special one for me on a personal level too. Jayne Conneely, better known as DJ Storm, was one half of the iconic duo Kemistry and Storm who were at the forefront of the scene that became known as Drum & Bass. As we will hear they met at college in the small provincial town where they grew up but the friendship they built went on to become a working partnership that would see them co-found the seminal label Metalheadz with Goldie and become two of the most prominent DJs in the scene. When Kemi sadly passed away after a car accident in 1999, Jayne had to rebuild her career after losing her closest friend. After lots of blood sweat and tears, DJ Storm is going from strength to strength, once again is topping bills all over the world. After all her years in the game I was struck with the level of love and enthusiasm Jayne still has for this music. She was instantly warm and friendly, and had so many stories about her journey from her early days in Kettering, through to moving to London, playing pirate radio, the birth of Metalheadz and loads more. I just want to thank our friends at Rye Wax in Peckham, who kindly gave us a space to record, so shouts to you guys for that.

Drum and Bass is Black Music… On the 30th anniversary of the 1981 Brixton riots, a historic reaction to the hostility and xenophobic environment that informed the policing of African and Caribbean immigrants, I examined the ruthless desire to keep Britain White. I pulled from Sam Selvon’s 1956 novel “The Lonely Londoners,” which tells the story of the Caribbean community’s communal response to the English brand of white supremacy and their cultural preservation as a means for survival. Additionally, I sought the political, social, and musicological context of a sound that takes root in Sly and Robbie’s Reggae Music—Drum and Bass. Inspired by these histories, I’ve created a musical essay that epitomizes my long-term relationship with Black Britain and the parallel strategies of resistance that Black Americans have employed to attain basic human rights. Shout out to drum and bass pioneers Roni Size, Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Kemistry and Storm, Krust, and all the other sons and daughters of “The Lonely Londoners.” I'm excited to introduce a new series of liner notes. As a part of the WildSeed Cultural Group Independent Artist in Residency program in Atlanta, Georgia (2011-2012), I will be working with my favorite thinkers, writers, cultural critics and scholars to help contextualize my mixes. The first to launch the series is Esther Armah, a fierce Black British writer, speaker, moderator and leader in the emotional justice movement. Thank you Esther for being willing to participate in this project and for helping to make "Entertainment with a Thesis" a reality. DJ lynnee denise (feel free to repost and pass on) Liner Notes by Esther Armah* We made it. Not bodies. They were battered, bruised, brutalized, buried. The drum beat landed. Intact. Slipped unnoticed between bodies, souls, minds carried from West Africa’s shores via the West Indies. Landed unbent and unbroken in this new land - West London. We were the language left when mother tongue was dragged screaming from its source, we were the unshed tears of the middle passage. Company came. Sought us out. Hands grabbed at us from Empire Wind-rush bodies, carried to this place from Caribbean islands. A new language, new accent from this new nation called England. Black backs bent and shaped by British labor, sweat collected from a generation invited and despised in the same breath. Our mamas and daddies, silent and deadly. That racism DNA pounded and flattened, birthed into frustrated beats and a new generation. Defiance became the breath of those born to these Caribbean bodies mangled seeking refuge from racist rants. This was now Black Britain. Sound changed. Started to gather new notes from new generation. April 1981. Brixton streets, injustice exploded, caught fire, consumed and cleansed. Remnants of those unshed tears from that middle passage put the fire out on the streets, left it burning within Black Britain. Fragments of rage wrapped in that drum, dirt from boots pounding those streets caught between notes. Fragments, pieces, floated, landed. Sound from snatched pieces of leftover 1960s signs that screamed: ‘No Niggers, No Dogs, No Irish’, sound dragged from police officers’ brutal batons before they rained rage on nappy heads, sound from untold injustice - all fashioned into language. Called it bass. The sound from an unwelcome land. The double consciousness in the mirror whose reflection you couldn’t see. Mangled beauty drenched in righteous rage. Drum n bass. 30 years on from Brixton; bodies, boots, batons echo, haunt, haint. Now. Press play. So honored to write these liner notes. Drum n bass are the fragments of us blown across waters and oceans, drum n bass was for the journey where it all got too much, where there was no voice, it is the emotionally unspeakable - the soundtrack of diasporic journeys. Love, love, love this Ms Lynnee... Esther Armah is a Black British award winning international journalist, an author, playwright, radio host, company director and public speaker.
