It's been a very sad week in the cricket world, with the passing of both Rod Marsh and Shane Warne, but on the field it's been very busy. We start the show by discussing the last-over drama and excitement of the Women's World Cup so far. Deandra Dottin said 'give me the ball', Nat Sciver almost carried England to a record chase and the White Ferns overcame the weather and Bangladesh to pick up their first win of the tournament. As we move around the world, news of a drinks break in Pakistan wakes us from a near slumber as we talk through one of the more boring Test matches in recent memory. Then it's off to India to talk about an incredible individual performance from Ravindra Jadeja, which helped India seal a big win in Virat Kohli's 100th match. Will anyone ever again beat India in a Test series at home? There's also chat about Ben Stokes and his role in the upcoming West Indies v England series, a shout out for the Eden Park groundstaff and a few words remembering the impact Rod Marsh had on both Australian and English cricket. We'll be back in your feed next week to discuss the many different international series and tournaments going on around the world, and our IPL preview will follow soon after that. The cricket world was rocked this week by the news that Shane Warne had passed away at the age of 52. Since then, there's been an outpouring of tributes from family, friends, teammates, opponents and many others from all around the world. And, to be honest, it's hit us harder than we thought, considering three out of four of us spent most of his career cheering against him. So we thought the best way we could pay tribute was to make him an early entrant into our Test Cricket Hall of Fame and discuss what made him such an icon of the game. We talk about our first memories of the King of Spin, his impact on the art of legspin and the consistency he showed throughout his career. We discuss what made him such an outstanding bowler, ponder some unanswerable questions and generally marvel at the feats of one of the best cricketers we've ever seen. We'll be back in your feed in about 24 hours to discuss the Women's World Cup, India v Sri Lanka, Pakistan v Australia and more in our regular This Week in Cricket show. This episode of the Vondubcast was recorded with returning guest and absolute legend Ken Rutherford on Father's Day of all days (he has 6 kids!). We discussed our own relationships with our fathers, different types of love, the difficulties of raising children and holding a family together and it was one of the most beautiful conversations I have ever been apart of. We also discussed the latest developments in the that thing we aren't allowed to talk about and how key resources that the world needs are being censored. This is a subject I have been dying to discuss with someone that has also looked into it so it was very rewarding to finally get a lot of things out on the table! I think Ken is a genuine leader with an open heart and love as his guiding virtue, something I have preached at length on this podcast but rarely experienced in real life and it is a great pleasure to call him a friend. In the intro to this episode I had to get my feelings out on the cancel canada day movement, and the extension of other movements its playbook is directly from. I tried to do this with love compassion and a little humour but please let me know any flaws in my logic and I would love to discuss it further! Have a great long weekend!
In this episode of the show, Lippy and Baldy chat with former Black Caps captain Ken Rutherford. From struggling in his international debut against one of the all-time great West Indian Test sides, through to captaining New Zealand, Ken Rutherford had a fascinating international career. We talk about that tough debut in 1984-85, scoring 300 in two sessions on a tour to England and the highs and lows of the 1992 World Cup. Lippy gets his full cricket nerd on with some 1993-94 World Series questions, Ken tells us about his acting skills and we hear about his experiences in South Africa, Ireland and the racing industry after his time with the Black Caps. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks as we build towards the World Test Championship final and cover New Zealand's tour to England. We'll have crossover episodes with podcasts from around the world, and there's more interviews on the way - a chat with former Black Cap and new Wellington Cricket bowling coach Iain O'Brien will be the next to drop. The boys are back together again to round up the cricketing week that was. There's high praise for BJ Watling after he announces he'll retire after the World Test Championship Final, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips get Black Caps contracts and we debate where that leaves Ajaz Patel's prospects on the international stage. Baldy takes us through an Australian summer schedule dominated by the men's and women's Ashes, the evergreen Darren Stevens and Sandpaper Gate get shout-outs, and should we start making bats from bamboo? We finish the show with an extended chat about the upcoming England v New Zealand Tests. Can the Black Caps find a spot for a spinner? Who will slot in at 7? Can England's batters secure themselves an Ashes spot? Will anyone make their Test debut? And, of course, who will win the series? Keep an eye out in the coming weeks as we build towards the World Test Championship final. We'll have crossover episodes with podcasts from around the world, and there's more interviews on the way as well, with Ken Rutherford the next in line. I enjoy recording every episode of this podcast but sometimes they just flow so naturally that you never want them to end. This episode with Tanner and Ken was definitely one of those episodes! Ken and Tanner have an amazing podcasts out of Lloydminster Alberta called the War on Weakness, where they tackle tough subjects and try to wrestle with what it means to be strong or at the very least not weak. It was so fascinating for me to be able to have both of these gentlemen on as I have listened to their chemistry together over the last few months and had a feeling we would all get along great. However you never really know and never want to assume, so when the boys sat down and the conversation went deep just as quick as I had hoped I knew I had guessed correctly. We talk personal accountability, freedom, being from "north of the river", centralization vs decentralization, strength, the charter of rights and freedoms, and overall what values we as a society should hold up above all else and what we see holding that mantle currently. This conversation was endlessly fascinating to me and I could have kept them there for 6 hours if they let me. Please check out their podcast and let them know if you enjoyed our conversation today! Also please check out @bikeforbreakfast where a group of brave men including our very own Ken Rutherford are going to bike over 1000Km from Lloyd to Tuffnell Sk and back! All to raise money for local schools in the area. This Thursday the 13th there will be the first major fundraiser for this event at 4th Meridian brewery in Lloyd where there will be $10 beer and pizza from 4pm-10pm so if you are in the area please go show your support and help raise money for a great cause!
Huuuuge episode today in so many ways! Andrew Mavridis is an undefeated pro MMA fighter out of Lloydminster Alberta. Not only is this my first conversation with a pro fighter but it also kicks off the first Monday of Lloydminster May where every Monday this month will be an interview with someone from Lloyd! This conversation was exactly what I have been itching for, we chatted about Andrew's MMA journey, fighter pay, weight cutting, MMA media, the business around fighting, rulesets, female MMA dominance and much much more. It was so fun to talk the sport I love with someone who is just as passionate and able to provide real insight to all the curiosities I had time to ask him about! Even if you are not a fight fan I truly believe this conversation gives some real insight on the strengths of the sport and what makes it so exhilarating to be a fan of. I would also like to bring some attention to some amazing guys with an amazing goal to raise money for children. Shaun Newman and Ken Rutherford, two of the guys you will be hearing from on the Vondubcast this month are doing a 1000+km bike ride in Saskatchewan for local school breakfast programs among other things. Check out the social media for bike for breakfast at @bikeforbreakfast and give what you can. This is a great project from some great guys! Also please check out my wonderful girlfriends new company Open Air Collective | Landscape Design and Consulting @openairlanddesign. She has worked immensely hard and there couldn't be a better time to tackle that landscaping project around the house, the shop or anywhere else and you might as well have it designed locally!

What You Need to Know is it's time to bust the Narrative Machine! American's have been bombarded by the narrative machine. Recently this article came out saying Americans don't want their kids in in-person school - What the Narrative on School Reopenings Has Missed. Over and over again parents are told it's unsafe to send their children back to school that many have started to believe that lie. The reality is our nation needs to get our kids back to in-person school and stop letting the Narrative Machine cause fear and division. Here are two things you can do: 1) Anchor yourself in the truth. 2) Find a community that will support you in your efforts. We the People have to push back! Noah Dingley, host of Across The County, & Noah's Ark, explains how America is at a crossroads right now, and if we are going to keep our country great We the People have to stand up against this push towards communism and socialism. Noah believes the best days for America are ahead. Be sure to check out his show Across The County! As far as introductions to international cricket go, spare a thought for new Black Caps coach Gary Stead.Hired as Mike Hesson's successor in August, Stead gets his first chance to showcase his imprint on the national side as they return from a seven-month hiatus tomorrow morning with a Twenty20 against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. While Pakistan may not have the name recognition or fear factor possessed by the likes of India or South Africa, it's impossible to find a more dominant stretch than that produced by Mickey Arthur's men in the shortest format over the past two years.General consensus would insist that Twenty20 is easily cricket's most unpredictable format, but Pakistan are coming close to completely quashing that theory. In their last 30 T20 outings, Pakistan have remarkably only suffered four losses; in the process reeling off 10 consecutive series victories. It's no surprise they are ranked the world's best T20 side - having taken over from the Black Caps in January - and just last week swatted aside Australia in a crushing 3-0 series sweep. At the heart of their success has been the ability to deftly use the conditions of their makeshift home base. The UAE pitches favour slow bowlers, with scores in the 150s usually a competitive total.Australia found that out the hard way. Set 156, 148 and 151 to win, they could muster only 89, 136-8 and 117, as Pakistan's wily bowlers tied them down.In Imad Wasim and 20-year-old legspinner Shadab Khan, Pakistan have two of the world's best T20 bowlers, and lest you think they don't have batting firepower, Babar Azam has risen to the top of the T20 batting world rankings, averaging an absurd 56.6 at a strike rate of 126.All up, it presents a serious challenge for a Black Caps side relying on some inexperienced faces.Martin Guptill, Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner are all missing, leaving opportunities for the likes of young trio Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips and Tim Seifert to step up.A lot will also depend on whether Colin Munro can deliver at the top of the order, and the destructive hitter is aware of the daunting task lying in wait tomorrow morning."It's a big challenge - especially in these conditions and with a few guys coming straight out of winter and not having played a lot of cricket," said Munro."They're usually lower wickets here and a little bit slower - we saw in the Aussie series that it's a little bit lower than back home."But even in these conditions, if we play to our potential, we can beat anyone on the day."Considering Pakistan's recent dominance, there's little doubt that to win the series, the Black Caps will have to fully deliver on that potential.
Former New Zealand captain Ken Rutherford thinks the Black Caps' will stick with Henry Nicholls over Mark Chapman when Ross Taylor comes back into the team.He also thinks it's a tricky situation for NZ Cricket to know where to schedule games in Wellington, after another pretty average turnout over the weekend.

An animated, online map shows for the first time just how the Ku Klux Klan spread rapidly to all 50 states between 1915 and 1940. John Kneebone says the KKK was far more main-stream than most people realize, with membership of between 2 million and 8 million people. Plus: Revolution has been one of the most important drivers of human activity since its emergence in modern form in the 18th century. In his new book, Jack Censer traces the “evolution of revolutionary ideas”--from the American and French revolutionaries to leaders of the Arab Spring. Later in the show: Many displaced Iraqis returning to their homes are finding landmines and booby-traps left for them by ISIS fighters. One woman opened her refrigerator and found a landmine on her vegetable shelf. Ken Rutherford who co-founded the Landmine Survivors Network, says this is the first time in the world’s history that roadside bombs target civilians.

Later in the show: How do we guarantee Iran has stopped all nuclear weapons efforts? Nathan Busch, in his forthcoming book, lays bare the politics of weapon inspections for Iran and many other nations. Also: If we accept that conflict is a rational decision, we can develop policies to prevent it. Atin Basuchoudhary has studied the factors that push people to violence, to identify the causes for large-scale conflict.
