#36: Nate Loenser shares what it means to maximize your abilities, make no excuses, and live life with grace. Loenser is currently with the University of Nebraska basketball program. Loenser spent five seasons with the Bulls, including three seasons as an assistant coach for Hoiberg and Jim Boylen. He helped develop 2021 NBA all-star Zach Lavine as well as Kris Dunn, Ryan Arcidiacono, Justin Holiday, Chandler Hutchison, David Nwaba, Denzel Valentine and Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot during his tenure with the Bulls. Loenser also served as the Bulls' NBA Summer League coach in 2019, a roster which featured NBA Lottery pick Coby White and ran the Bulls' predraft workouts for three seasons.Prior to joining the Bulls coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Windy City Bulls D-League team in 2016-17. Loenser spent two years on Hoiberg's Iowa State staff and was a key component in helping the Cyclones to a pair of Big 12 Tournament titles. He was the Cyclones' Director of Player Development in 2014-15, as ISU went 25-9 and tied for second in the Big 12. That season, Georges Niang earned All-America honors, while Niang, Monté Morris and Jameel McKay were recognized on the All-Big 12 teams. McKay was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. In his first season, Loenser served as graduate assistant as the program enjoyed one of its best seasons in program history. The Cyclones finished with 28 wins, won the Big 12 Tournament title and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. After one season at Northern University High School in Cedar Falls, Loenser began his collegiate coaching career at Southern Mississippi. He served on Larry Eustachy's staff for six seasons, helping the Golden Eagles post a pair of 20-win seasons and reach the CIT in 2010. Loenser returned to Iowa to coach high school basketball, serving as the head coach at Spirit Lake High School before joining the Iowa State staff in 2013. A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Loenser was a 2002 graduate of Iowa State, where he played baseball for the Cyclones in 2001. He was a four-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, football, and golf) at Northern University High School. Enjoy the show!
The ReCYcle Podcast is back!!! In this episode, we rewind to 2001 and steal Paul Shirley, former Iowa State player, and current author/entrepreneur to talk about his career as a Cyclone. The interview provides the most insane, never-heard stories about controversial former Iowa State head coach Larry Eustachy. We don't want to spoil it, but they are not pleasant. Paul is a fantastic interview, and anyone who has any interest in Iowa State or basketball will be highly entertained by this podcast. As always, this podcast is presented to you by Es Tas Bar & Grill.

Voice of the Rams Brian Roth joins us to talk about his 20-year career as part of the CSU Radio Network team, how he roots for CSU to whip CU (his alma mater) every year, what it was like to interview Larry Eustachy, his experience with five different football head coaches, his top CSU memories, and much more. Plus, Joel Cantalamessa and Mike Rowe talk about the newly released Mountain West football schedule, news from around the conference/college football, and more.
Nate Loenser was born without his left hand. However, that never slowed him down, let alone stopped him, from pursuing his dreams on the field. Loenser was a multisport varsity athlete, and an all-state baseball player, for NU High in Cedar Falls. After committing to serve as a basketball manager for Tim Floyd at Iowa State, Nate ended up walking on to the Iowa State baseball team. Loenser was cut from the team after the first time he tried out but was asked to come back to the team as a senior after getting noticed in a wood bat league game. In true Moonlight Graham fashion, Loenser had one at-bat (a walk) and a run scored. The Cyclone baseball program was cut later that same season. After college, Loenner took a job coaching as a grad-assistant for Larry Eustachy at Southern Miss. Loenser credits Eustachy with teaching him a lot about coaching and working with high-level athletes. Following a stint as a high school basketball coach, Loesner went back to Ames to serve as a grad assistant under Fred Hoiberg on some of those great recent Cyclone teams. Loesner followed Hoiberg to Chicago and has worked his way up from video coordinator and currently serves as an assistant coach for the Bulls.
Renaldo, John and Taige recreate their version of The Ringers’ Rewatchables series with a deep dive into the 2014 CBC gold medal game. The highlight of the Larry Eustachy era for the Bahamas was this win over Cuba. Did Marvin Gray and CJ Hinds deliver the greatest national team backcourt performance ever? How would Magnum Rolle fit into today’s game? Is Sundaddy still screaming random catch phrases?
Jake Brend is joined by Sean Dee and Ryan Stivers as they relive the worst nut punch in Iowa State history. They talk through the game, the circumstances that led to it, and the tragic career of Larry Eustachy.
Justin Michael talks about how much of a positive impact Nico Carvacho has had on the Colorado State men's basketball program and criticizes Carvacho's former coaches for failing to reach out to the senior.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The door was left open a crack during the late 1990s. Iowa State was looking to slip through it. The Hawkeyes’ future was unknown at the time. Dr. Tom Davis’ contract had not renewed and a new coach had not been hired. Cyclone coach Larry Eustachy used the opportunity to court Mason City point guard Jeff Horner, despite him growing up an avid Iowa fan. The basketball phenom really liked what he saw and heard on an unofficial visit to Ames. What would have become a nightmare for Iowa having already lost in-state stars Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison to Kansas turned fond memories. Steve Alford replaced Davis and corralled Horner shortly after his arrival in Iowa City. Horner went on to lead the Hawkeyes to two NCAA Tournaments and a Big Ten Tournament title. He’s their all-time assists leader (612) and is second in three-pointers made (262). We caught up with Horner recently for the Hawkeye History podcast, on which he told stories about being recruited by ISU, playing for Alford, living through the Pierre Pierce arrests, studying Pornography at Iowa (what?) and much more. Please give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jeremy and Eli are back to preview the Colorado State basketball team which has a new head coach with Larry Eustachy and the school parting ways. In his place is Niko Medved who is a former Rams assistant and spent last year as the head coach at Drake. Colorado State does have a group of upper classmen which might offset the loss of players and a new head coach, but the end result at best might be an NIT bid for the Rams. Growing up in Georgia, Kantrail Horton had a very successful high school career and had signed with Larry Eustachy to play at Utah State. That is until one morning morning SportsCenter told him his coach was heading to ISU. A phone call later that settled that Coach Eustachy wanted Horton to come to Ames with him… after a short detour to finish junior college out in California. Kantrail shares how growing up playing at ‘The Gate' and his time in California shaped him as a player and man. Those twists and turns prepared Horton to be the player that Cyclones fans know and loved. Once in Ames, Kantrail Horton joined one of the best Cyclone teams in history. This interview goes into great detail about the chemistry of playing with Cyclone greats like Marcus Fizer, Jamaal Tinsley, Stevie Johnson and Moonlighter Paul Shirley. Hortons Cyclone career was during the best stretch in ISU men's basketball history, 1999-2001. Four wins vs. KU, 2 Big XII titles and an Elite 8 finish all standout as highlights, but perhaps most impressive is that Horton never lost a game at Hilton Coliseum. Kantrail Horton is easily a favorite guest of the Moonlight Graham Show and we think you'll see why right away. It is easy to hear his passion for basketball, his teammates and coaches, and his continued career with the game he loves in this week's conversation.
With so much happening inside Colorado State Athletics, specifically within the men's basketball program and concerning Larry Eustachy, many questions remained unanswered. That's because, after the month-long climate assessment of Eustachy's program, those findings were not released due to an amended employment agreement which allowed Eustachy to resign from the team and be paid $750,000.Parker called that amount a "discount," and considering the $3 million Eustachy would have been owed for being fired without cause, it was just that, a discount. And now, Colorado State can move on.But, during that round-table discussion with 10 media members, there were many questions about the assessment, about Eustachy himself, about what was found and much, much more. The second half of the podcast focuses in on that roundtable with Parker, which also concludes with what he's looking for in the next men's basketball head coach. The first half of this Rams Cast looks at the team themselves, who lost their season finale against New Mexico in blowout fashion. The men's team is in the middle of a week off before playing in the Mountain West Tournament, starting Wednesday afternoon, against either UNLV or Utah State.
State Rep. Patrick Neville survived the Columbine shooting. He makes the case for expanded gun access and training for teachers and staff in schools. Then, after CSU ousted Larry Eustachy, we ask: What's the price for a winning team? Also, should Colorado cyclists be allowed to roll through red lights? And, we get a tour of the re-opened Kirkland Museum.
Yesterday, Larry Eustachy resigned from his post as Colorado State's head coach, a position he held for more than six years. We take a minute to look back on the Larry Eustachy Era at CSU, the good and the bad times, as well as the pros and cons of Larry as a head coach. Then, we switch gears and look at the many possibilities as next head coach for the Rams. Some names you've heard many times before, and some will be new; all with their own merits going forward. Could a lot of players leave CSU? It seems unlikely, unless they get a waiver and don't have to sit out a year. That is discussed, as is the actual team, who lost despite a great effort, last Saturday at Nevada. Three things to know from that game and three things to get you ready for the regular season finale Wednesday night as New Mexico comes to Moby Arena for a 7 p.m. MT tip-off.That, and much more inside your CSU Rams Cast.
Kelly Lyell talks about how the schools progress has gone in its efforts to rid itself of Larry Eustachy and the impact the investigation has had on the student athlete and the basketball program this year.

Colorado State finally got back to their winning ways on Saturday, defeating San Jose State 90-79.For the first time ever, Jase Herl was the head coach of the Rams men's team, being named to that interim position at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with the game tipping off at 2 p.m. MT. Herl told his team to have fun, which we heard a lot from Nico Carvacho and Anthony Bonner in the postgame press conference. Why was having fun imperative to this team who had lost seven straight games? Well, it wasn't just the losing hurting CSU, but the wild distractions surrounding this team that they needed to shake off. (Read why it was important to get back to fun at the bottom of this post.)After that huge win, which was Nico Carvacho's career game, we give you three things to take away from the victory. And then we move onto who could be CSU's next coach, if, indeed, the school moves on from Larry Eustachy. The second half of the podcast focuses on National Signing Day, with a lot of quotes from John Jancek and the rest of the new CSU Football defensive coaching staff. You'll want to hang around for those.

Larry Eustachy has been placed on administrative leave from the Colorado State men's basketball team, leaving Steve Barnes -- his longtime friend and assistant coach -- as the interim coach for CSU.Saturday's loss to Nevada -- a close one against the best team in the Mountain West -- was the first in six years without Eustachy on the bench for the Rams and the first Barnes has ever coached at CSU. We bring a bunch of quotes from Barnes after the loss and also read off a whole host of tweets from former Rams players who continue to defend Larry's coaching. Then, we give you three things to know about tonight's CSU men's basketball game against Air Force in Colorado Springs and who to watch in that game.In the second half; could Becky Hammon be a candidate for the next CSU men's basketball coach if the school decides to move on from Larry? It's possible, and we look at three other, fitting candidates as well, for the position. Of course, it's not open as of yet, but it could be soon. Finally, some recruiting news with National Signing Day tomorrow. Thanks for tuning in!

For Colorado State Rams basketball, a tough season has gotten a little ugly as of late. The Rams have lost five straight games, which is the longest streak of losing in eight years, they're without their two best starters due to injury and it was found out on Wednesday by Justin Michael that Larry Eustachy's conduct is under investigation once again. We heard about the "culture of fear," as it was described, back in 2013, when it came out last year. Despite all the negative press, the Rams players rallied around their coach then. That seemed to be happening again Wednesday night as the shorthanded men's basketball team put up a great fight and led the better Wyoming Cowboys for much of the game, only to fall apart at the end of both halves and end up losing in double overtime, 91-86.We look at the information surrounding this "climate assessment" as Joe Parker said in a release on Wednesday and what it means for CSU men's basketball present and future. All that is happening, while the players -- Anthony Bonner and Deion James among others -- have Eustachy's back and they all must prepare for another game tomorrow against the best in the Mountain West in Nevada. We give you three things to look for in that game, including a great matchup possibility of forwards in Nico Carvacho versus Jordan Caroline. Then, we look at some recruiting news, some coaching salaries from the football team and how CBS Sports says Michael Gallup is a first-round sleeper.

Colorado State enjoyed their most complete game, playing the "right way" as Larry Eustachy says, in their victory over the rival CU Buffs on Saturday. Why was that win so huge? They not only dominated on the glass, but on defense, and listened to coaching in terms of getting the ball inside on offense, too. That win was massive for the team because it righted the ship at 4-4 overall going into tonight's huge road game against Arkansas (5-2) and then Friday's road game at Oregon (5-3), each Power 5 opponents. We give you a quick preview of the Arkansas game and how the Rams can win tonight, as that game tips off at 6 p.m. MST and can be seen on the Watch ESPN app.The second half of the podcast focuses on CSU football and their upcoming bowl game in New Mexico against the Marshall Thundering Herd. It will be Marty English's last game coaching for CSU, and, it's a huge opportunity for Mike Bobo to get his first bowl win at the school. Also, coaching changes are happening at CU, too, and how ESPN thinks the bowl game will go.
Colorado State men's basketball is struggling away from home this season, going 0-4 on the road, while they have won all their home games and sit at 3-4 on the season. The good news? They play the University of Colorado at home tomorrow morning (11 am MST). The bad news? CU is 6-0 on the season, although they are inexperienced and have yet to play a road game. In the second half of the podcast, we talk with Mat Smith, the CU Editor for MileHighSports.com, about the Buffs, their stars and some key matchups in the game as well.
