Danny Vietti lists all of the available 2024-25 free agents available this offseason by position. Plus, the Marlins returns for trades might be all-time bad. One of my all-time favorite movies is Field of Dreams, and it holds a powerful lesson about discovering your area of genius.

Uncommon Ambience: At the Movies; Field of Dreams (1989) ambience — Field of Dreams fits in well with the other weird baseball fantasies we love. Casey at the Bat, the figment of Doubleday field, and the wonderfully strange the Natural. The book version has zero redemption by way of smashed outfield lights. Just a baseball Superman shackled by fate, circumstance, and stupidity. Only, Roy Hobbs strikes out. And then he punches a dude. Field of Dreams is baseball magic and forced Americana (hot dogs, small-town book banning, farming, failed finance) — what's not to love? Aside from the most grating-ass whisper in all of cinema. The movie wants to be great. It is occasionally silly, as when Ray asks Terence what he wants. Forcing Terence into his own mind to search for an answer amongst his pain and dead civil rights leaders. "…I want my privacy." The film then cuts to the two standing before a concession stand. Ray wants to know Terence's snack order. "Oh, a dog and a beer," says Terence, bemused. It's a cute scene, but also, rimshot. The joke is on us future people, where the "seven bucks" in the movie is the total for two orders of "a dog and a beer." Whatever — Ray and Terence sit in the stands and watch a pedestrian putout — and then Ray starts hearing the annoying whisper; "Go the distance." Ray freezes, and the scoreboard chyron starts flickering. Fortunately, Ray was bored enough with the game to keep score in his program. So his pencil was ready to write down a name from the haywire Jumbotron; "Moonlight Graham." Did the ghost force an illusion or hack the Jumbotron? Who cares... we need to ignore the movie's narrative from here on out. This podcast episode focuses on the uninspiring game at Fenway, not the fever dream that follows. We'll let Ray and Terence leave early in search of Moonlight Graham. Who astral projects his younger self on a highway with his thumb outstretched to hitch a ride. Weird stuff. In this podcast, we will chill, at this boring baseball game where the Red Sox host the Oakland Athletics. PS: While I feel baseball has been fantasized and weirded out in American fiction better than any other sport — I would suggest checking out Vanilla Dunk, a short story by Jonathan Lethem. It is exciting and so weird.
This week on the Moonlight Graham show, we shine the spotlight on one of Iowa's most distinguished high school baseball coaches - Michael Barta. Not even 40 and already a name to reckon with, Barta has led teams to an impressive five state championships. Our discussion dives deep into Barta's monumental achievement of turning Johnston High School, a large public institution, into a powerhouse of baseball. In an age where high schools emphasize sports like basketball and football, Barta's accomplishment stands out. Under his guidance, Johnston is not just thriving in high school baseball but setting standards so advanced that colleges seek to emulate. Trusty co-host, Tom Griffin, adds layers of camaraderie to the discussion, having had his own coaching endeavors with Barta. As they inaugurate the new MGS podcast studio, the trio delves into Barta's strategies, the rapid build of the program, and explores the future for someone who's already reached such pinnacles at a relatively young age. A blend of personal insights, professional achievements, and a hint of nostalgia makes this a must-listen for fans of the pod and anyone interested in the captivating world of high school baseball. Dive in to discover more about the dynamic Michael Barta and his indomitable spirit.
In this episode of the Moonlight Graham show, the spotlight shines on Robert Etzel, a nonagenarian who once played a short-lived professional baseball season back in 1955. With a record of 19 games, Robert might not have made a significant mark statistically, but his story and connection to the small town of Fort Dodge, Iowa make him a compelling guest. Robert's journey is not just about those 19 games. He grew up in Fort Dodge during the 1940s and 1950s, played junior college baseball and football at Iowa Central, starred in three sports at Simpson College, and even had a brief stint with the barnstorming House of David baseball team. This episode is an unedited treasure that paints a vivid picture of a bygone era, taking listeners on a nostalgic trip to small-town Iowa. Through old newspaper clippings, personal anecdotes, and the charismatic storytelling of Robert, listeners can explore a different time, understanding the rich tapestry of memories woven by someone who has truly lived through it. This episode is not just about celebrating sports and players; it's also about honoring the generations that preceded us and preserving their stories. Dive in and spend an hour with Robert Etzel, a man who, with his tales, encapsulates the essence of the Moonlight Graham show - to spotlight stories worth telling.

And Moonlight Graham comes up because he got one at-bat in the Major Leagues, and then he never got to play again. And I remember somebody in the movie saying something like, ‘Aren't you angry? Don't you wish you had more chance?' And he's like, ‘No. I got to live my dream, even if it was one at-bat.' And so, [opening for Jim Gaffigan] was my one at-bat. In this bonus episode, we "Go the Distance" on the history and legacy of the real Archie "Moonlight" Graham, who many people know from the "Field of Dreams" movie portrayed by Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley. Graham was a 1905 alumnus of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and made historic contributions in the field of medicine, specifically, pediatrics. Guest Larry Pitrof, executive director of the Medical Alumni Association of the University of Maryland, talks about his recent discovery of correspondence and artifacts tied to Graham that were previously unknown. This bonus episode is a condensed version of a Twitter Space that aired on Aug. 10, 2022, a day before the second annual MLB Field of Dreams game.

This week Moonlight Graham brings you an underdog NFL draft scout of our very own. Nick Clark loves college and NFL football. More than just watching games, he loves breaking down the players and looking at what NFL teams need. What started as a hobby in high school has turned into a full-blown passion project for Nick Clark. NCtheScout joins the pod this week to get us ready for the 2022 NFL Draft.
They say good things come in small packages and this week's guest puts his own spin on that. Spencer Brown was a giant coming out of 8-man football and tiny Lenox, Iowa. Now, Spencer Brown is an absolute force on the field playing right tackle for the Buffalo Bills. How does a guy come from small-town ball and lightly recruited to starting 10 games for one of the best teams in professional football? It's a tale that Moonlight Graham has told before, a lot of hard work and getting an opportunity.
Neil and Tim are bursting with anticipation. Between Opening Day and Neil's baby on the way, there is a lot to be excited about in the Moonlight Graham world. It hardly seems possible that the opening day of the 2022 baseball season is here with all of the time the sports world spent talking about the lockout. Between the social media hot takes and the threats of a reduced season, it almost felt like this day would never come.
"Well, you know I... I never got to bat in the major leagues. I would have liked to have had that chance. Just once. To stare down a big league pitcher. To stare him down, and just as he goes into his windup, wink. Make him think you know something he doesn't."- Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, Field of DreamsOh ladies and gentlemen, if you recognize this quote then you are going to love today's guest, Tim Flattery. For more than 5 years, Tim has hosted The Moonlight Graham Show, inspired by Moonlight Graham from The Field of Dreams, where he captures some of the best stories from sports heard directly from the athletes and figures who experienced them.>>He believes that talking to the guy at the end of the bench is going to have better stories to tell than the branded star.
Not really. But Earl Snyder has some stories to tell. And the receipts to prove it. His baseball life, which includes a cup of coffee with the legendary '04 Red Sox.

Tim Flattery is known all over the state of Iowa for his popular podcast called The Moonlight Graham Show. I would even argue that he is known all over the US. If that seems like a stretch, his guest list is sure not. Tim has had some of the biggest names in sports appear on The Moonlight Graham Show. Some with Iowa ties and some with not. His podcast can bring you to tears one minute and have you busting at the gut the next minute. Before Tim was a well known podcaster, he made his name in baseball. In high school, he played in the All-Star Series where he connected with many greats from our area. Tim later went on to play at UNI for current Iowa Head Coach Rick Heller. That UNI team was loaded with Dubuque County talent and Tim shares many stories about playing with them and against them. You will be able to connect to the area with all the name drops in this episode. Mark attempted to watch "Field of Dreams" with his wife. She joins the show to discuss.
It was shaping up to be a bloodbath, but just two Field of Dreams naysayers has the guts to show up for this podcast and attempt to convince Brett Ballantini that the film is trash. Colleen Sullivan and Jacki Krestel wax acidic on the film; in the end, no one shifted their stances. Here's a corny taste of this episode: Zoe Krestel the Wonder Dog makes an appearance, and Brett is convinced the canine is on Team FoD with him What is the excitement level over this very odd, midseason game? Is there concern over how Carlos Rodón is able to finish out 2021, given his heavy workload/Cy Young-caliber start? In a world where every other movie release is a superhero yarn, why is it so hard to suspend disbelief for a sports fantasy movie? The It's a Wonderful Life comp Colleen's synopsis of the movie is brutal, but not entirely inaccurate Colleen and Jacki both seem fixated on Moonlight Graham attending to the choking child vs. calling the paramedics — as if an ambulance is on-call to fish hot dog bits out of someone's throat in rural Iowa We agree that the end of the film, including "have a catch" (cringe) and car traffic, is pretty cool overall Seriously, why was Ray Liotta so important to this film that he not only is shoehorned in as Joe Jackson (!) but allowed to bat right-handed? Graham Greer was the songwriter and frontman for The Barstool Prophets who released a string of major label records and toured heavily in Canada during the mid 1990's. We talk about the bands legacy, the songs still hold up! plus one of Graham's bandmates, Glen, has a unique skill.. some would call it a super power. Moonlight Graham is ready to do what no one (and certainly no podcast) has been able to do; fix the game of baseball.
Growing up in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Ernie Accorsi had an early, rich sports experience, when the Philadelphia Eagles held training camp there, and where the Wilt Chamberlain-led Philadelphia Warriors trained and played. Accorsi started out as a sportswriter, before being hired by the Baltimore Colts in 1970 as the public relations director, the start of Accorsi's long career in the NFL. In this latest "Stories with Street Cred" podcast, Accorsi discusses his distinguished NFL arc, his childhood memories in Hershey, and his sportswriting experiences, which included an interview with Moonlight Graham, and an exclusive scoop on Chamberlain's trade to the Lakers. Accorsi's last NFL executive post was general manager of the Giants, and perhaps his signature front office move was acquiring quarterback Eli Manning in a draft-day trade with San Diego. Manning, of course, went on to beat Tom Brady twice in the Super Bowl.
This week we had the chance to sit down with fellow Iowa podcaster, Tim Flattery. After an athletic career journey that included walking on to the UNI men's baseball team and eventually getting signed to the minor leagues, Tim decided to hang up the cleats. However, he still kept the "moonlighters", guys like himself that had to work a little harder to keep the dream alive, close to his heart. Tim has released hundreds of episodes of the "Moonlight Graham" podcast which features interviews with some of Iowa's greatest athletes. It was a pleasure getting to knowTim and break down the current state of Iowa athletics. Thanks for listening. Catch the full video recording on YouTube.
Everyone knows about his short-lived Major League career, but Archibald Graham has so much more to his story. In this episode, Tim and resident historian Tom take a deep dive into Archibald Moonlight Graham's legacy. We know of Moonlight Graham because author W.P. Kinsella came across a random entry in a baseball encyclopedia, but the good people of Chisolm, MN celebrate Doc ‘Moonlight' Graham Days each year to celebrate so much more than baseball.
Nate Loenser was born without his left hand. However, that never slowed him down, let alone stopped him, from pursuing his dreams on the field. Loenser was a multisport varsity athlete, and an all-state baseball player, for NU High in Cedar Falls. After committing to serve as a basketball manager for Tim Floyd at Iowa State, Nate ended up walking on to the Iowa State baseball team. Loenser was cut from the team after the first time he tried out but was asked to come back to the team as a senior after getting noticed in a wood bat league game. In true Moonlight Graham fashion, Loenser had one at-bat (a walk) and a run scored. The Cyclone baseball program was cut later that same season. After college, Loenner took a job coaching as a grad-assistant for Larry Eustachy at Southern Miss. Loenser credits Eustachy with teaching him a lot about coaching and working with high-level athletes. Following a stint as a high school basketball coach, Loesner went back to Ames to serve as a grad assistant under Fred Hoiberg on some of those great recent Cyclone teams. Loesner followed Hoiberg to Chicago and has worked his way up from video coordinator and currently serves as an assistant coach for the Bulls.
If you were a young baseball player and were told that you would reach the Major Leagues one day -- but you would only play one game, and only one game -- would all the years of playing and sacrificing be worth it? Kornhauser identifies 11 players who are just like "Moonlight" Graham from the movie "Field of Dreams." (Graham is a real player, by the way.) Kornhauser's subjects are interesting, and so is Kornhauser for choosing this topic. We discuss similar themes for these 11 players, why their briefest of moments in the majors made it easier to walk away, the teammates who show compassion in helping ensure they get into a game, the managers who are cast as villains, and a lot of brotherly ties ... including how Jacob's younger brother is the editor of this book.
Sports are the best. And sports are the worst. There are so many things about sports that bring us together and give us something to celebrate and create communities. However, certain things just grind on you. The announcer that makes you put the game on mute, TV timeouts before and after kickoffs, and so much more. This week, Moonlight Graham takes hot takes to a new level as we take it to the sauna to really sweat it out and get everything off of our chests. www.moonlightgrahamshow.com/podcast/everythingwehate

Episode 128 brings a little class and sophistication to the podcast. On the heels of our discussion about one of the greatest video games we played as kids...and adults, this week brings a discussion of art and American culture. Vincent van Gogh even gets his first (and likely only) Moonlight Graham shout out. Andy Brown is a Brit who has spent the last several years painting baseball parks in South Korea, Japan, Mexico, and the United States. His attraction to the game of baseball may have started across the ocean, but his dream was to visit and paint every major league ballpark took him across the US. Visiting every major league stadium is an item on many people's bucket lists. Andy Brown not only visited every MLB stadium during the 2019 season; he painted every stadium as well. In addition to the US, he has also painted every stadium in Korea and Japan and is currently working in Mexico. Tim and Andy talk discuss baseball as much more than just a game. They both see it as a part of American culture. As a Brit, Andy provides a unique perspective seeing the diverse cross-sections of America and compares the division in the media vs. the unity of the ballpark. Andy saw America up close as he road-tripped across the country and shares his impressions and insights, including reviewing American fast food. As a part of his journey across America, Andy Brown knew he needed to make a stop in Dyersville, Iowa to see the Field of Dreams. He shares about the magic of being at the Field of Dreams and how it has changed the way he views the movie. Without realizing it, Andy's visit to the Field of Dreams happened to be on the weekend of the last ghost player game of the year. Andy was able to paint the field and players and capture an amazing atmosphere from his first visit to Field of Dreams. Andy Brown's paintings have been displayed at the Baseball Hall of Fame Cooperstown and on ESPN, BBC, Fox Sports, and many other media outlets.

Episode 124 brings together some of our favorite things in the sports world: obscure sports facts, bragging rights, and an underdog athlete. Reed McManigal, the pride of Mason City, sits down in a multipart interview with Tim to break down Reed's pursuit of a Guinness World Record for the fastest 1-mile run while dribbling a basketball. Breaking a Guinness World Record is more than just doing something amazing. After deciding that he wanted to set a record, he had to find something he thought he could handle. Searching the Guinness site and focusing on basketball drew his attention to the record held by Colin Shaver who ran a mile while dribbling a basketball in 6 minutes and 58 seconds. Reed started this process in March and had to go through many steps including securing two timers, witnesses, a basketball official, and a track official. Reed is an Iowa product, recently named one of the Des Moines Register's 40 under 40 in Des Moines, and so naturally his attempt had to take place on the Drake Blue Oval. Moonlight Graham has had Olympic champions and athletes who have competed at the highest levels, however part 2 of this interview is the first time Tim has been able to sit down with a Guinness world record holder. Reed takes Tim through his preparation for the run which mostly focused following the Guinness rules leading up to the big day. Reed and his crew took over Drake Stadium on a cold October Sunday morning for his attempt. Tim served as the official videographer to document the attempt. After starting hot in lap one and then trying to find his pace in lap two, Reed was able to shatter Colin Shaver's record by almost 20 seconds.
On a Friday the guys guess what Erick Zamora's daily jersey is, Murph talks about how Jenny and he are going to see Luke Bryan, they thank the William Hill Sports Book and take a listen to Bryce Harper's walk-off Grand Slam against the Chicago Cubs. Then Tim Flattery comes on to talk about the Moonlight Graham Show and the guys chat Field of Dreams including the latest episode of The Sports Movie Pod before AD does Throwdowns live from the Depot at the Iowa State Fair
Episode 110 takes Moonlight Graham into the workshop of Jimmy Lonetti and D&J Glove Repair in Minneapolis. Jimmy and his son Dom started their business as a sort of hobby when they saw the need for repairs in little league. That hobby has turned into a business that brings baseball mitts of all conditions back to life. Tim bought a 1930s glove that looked like it belonged in the trash heap and after a few weeks in the D&J workshop, the mitt was literally game ready. Like every Moonlighter, Jimmy's story starts with his family. Jimmy's grandpa was a shoemaker and Jimmy remembers the smell of leather and glue and even working on his own gloves (before he even knew how!). Many of the gloves D&J repairs have their own father and son story. Many sons send him gloves their dads grew up playing that they want to recondition as a gift or reviving a glove that was a gift from their father. Every glove has a story and Jimmy and Dom use their skills to bring those stories to life.

Week 35 of Barstool Radio is so bright, that we gotta wear shades. Literally. We start out Monday talking about the solar eclipse which became a cultural phenomenon for the day. On Tuesday we recap filming the Rundown during the eclipse, and the irony of seeing the actor who played Moonlight Graham in Field of Dreams. Before the boys took off for Sin City, we were able to fit in some Tiger Woods dick talk. We can't go a week without dick talk. It's our brand now. For the second half of the week, Dave, Robbie Fox and the Young and Happy boys hold the show down from Radio Row. Brendan Schaub takes Dave's side when it comes to bringing a smokeshow with him to the fight over Robbie Fox. On Friday, Big Cat and PFTCommenter from Pardon My Take host the show with Michael Rapaport, who is able to bring us Ice Cube, but not Stephen A. Smith. Robbie Fox instigates a fight with Floyd Mayweather Sr., and is lucky he walked away with his life. All this and more on Barstool Radio, live from Radio Row in Las Vegas.
To conclude the second season of the show we spent some time discussing about some topics that we needed to get off of our chests. A special thanks to all of our listeners who have grown with us these first two seasons. Some of the best Moonlighters yet are lined up for Season 3!

In this special episode, The Moonlight Graham Show takes a slightly different direction than our typical conversation with a former or current player. If you are interested in NASCAR and the inner workings of big time sports marketing, then you will enjoy this conversation with Jimmy Small, the President of the Iowa Speedway. Highlights include Jimmy describing a classic story of bootstrapping his way into an interview with NASCAR. For those of us that are unfamiliar with the NASCAR scene, he also makes the case for why it is like no other sports weekend experience. Lastly, we find out what Adam Sandler, Randy Moss, and Kenny Powers all have in common. As a fun aside, Jimmy also recalls the story of his grandfather Jim Small who coincidentally was a real-life "Moonlight Graham." Small was a "Bonus Baby" outfielder for the Detroit Tigers in the 1950s and a career .270 hitter.
Christmas came early with the very first episode of the Moonlight Graham Show! In this introductory episode to The Moonlight Graham Show, brothers Tim, Andy, and Neil Flattery discuss a vision for a better sports podcast and (of course) the Field of Dreams.
