When Kim Witczak lost her husband Woody to suicide, something didn't add up. Woody wasn't a troubled soul and he'd had no history with mental illness or self harm. But what he did have was a recent prescription to antidepressants and some very troubling side effects. Lisa became an accidental advocate for the dangers of off label prescription use and better labeling of those potential dangers. Now that's the first half- a little heavy but very interesting and informative. The second half is Jenny Jones, John Wayne Bobbit and Joey Buttafucco, all wrapped up into one very funny show. Kim has enough heart and stories to fill several episodes! #LegacyMatters #RealConversations #GetToKnowYourNeighbor #UpperMidwestStories #EverydayLegacy #AuthenticVoices #LifeStories #MidwestPodcast #NeighborhoodChronicles #HumanConnection #HeartfeltStories #UnforgettableMoments #ThoughtfulConversations #LocalVoices #GenuineStories #WoodyMatters #KimWitczak

Henry Bromelkamp and Jeff Nelson have been through a lot together. Partners for 36 years, they have each enjoyed successful careers and together they have lived social, active lives. Just before the COVID19 pandemic hit, Henry had an accident. The first half of the show we talk a lot about traumatic brain injuries. This show, and the message it carries, hits close to home for all of our hosts. We have witnessed firsthand the effects of the types of injuries. Please please please wear a helmet when you are exposed to risk. Bicycling, skiing, riding a scooter…anything that carries a serious risk of falling and hitting your head. One thing I took from this episode, and from the first time I met Henry, is that it becomes somewhat hard for people to focus on life outside the injury and its effects. The second half of the show we get to know more about this wonderful couple, their lives before meeting and some of the activities they are currently enjoying. Henry is truly lucky to be alive. His determination to make an impact on the world remains fully intact. Enjoy the show and please take good care of yourself and those you love. Here is a link to an article about Charles Feeny, who Henry worked with for over 15 years. What an honor that must have been. #LegacyMatters #RealConversations #GetToKnowYourNeighbor #UpperMidwestStories #EverydayLegacy #AuthenticVoices #LifeStories #MidwestPodcast #NeighborhoodChronicles #HumanConnection #HeartfeltStories #UnforgettableMoments #ThoughtfulConversations #LocalVoices #GenuineStories #HenryBromelkamp #TBI #JeffNelson
Houston White walked into the Comedy Corner Underground and was immediately amazed. He was genuinely charmed by the rawness of a space so clearly carved out of what would have been an unused and unloved basement. It was reminiscent of spaces he loves from NYC. That was before we even began the show. From there we got to know Houston in the way we do- we talked. We opened up the conversation to learn more about some of the experiences that have led Houston to where he is today. In case you don't know, Houston White is the man behind the brand by the same name. I am so glad that we have stayed committed to not researching our guests, as there is a lot of information out there in the world about Houston. We talk about the family drywall business, the maturity that has helped Houston understand that it is okay that he is the brand. We discuss safeness as an alternative to safety- which was the first time I had heard the two things talked about in that way. And we spend some time working through the importance of positivity, and the role we play in shaping a future that is full of safeness and safe places for all of our children, as they are the real reason for our endeavors, or at least they should be. Oh, and we get a very thoughtful and surprisingly fact-filled (for our show anyway) rundown of why barbershops have historically been a central hub for community, wealth and activism within the black communities of America. #LegacyMatters #RealConversations #GetToKnowYourNeighbor #UpperMidwestStories #EverydayLegacy #AuthenticVoices #LifeStories #MidwestPodcast #NeighborhoodChronicles #HumanConnection #HeartfeltStories #UnforgettableMoments #ThoughtfulConversations #LocalVoices #GenuineStories #HoustonWhite #BarberShop
This week we're in the Green Room with environmental activist turned life coach and entrepreneur, Ellen Palmer. Ellen joins us to impart some pragmatic advice, hopefully lighting the fires of change in those seeking healthy self-improvement. Ellen, as founder of Freedom, Growth and Joy here in Minneapolis, draws from her past as COO/CFO of @Askov Finlayson and @Fresh Energy to help guide her clients toward a balanced relationship with themselves and their passions. We do some joking around, but all jokes aside, it's an enlightening conversation. And fear not - we will still bring it around to camping and canoeing somehow. #LegacyMatters #RealConversations #GetToKnowYourNeighbor #UpperMidwestStories #EverydayLegacy #AuthenticVoices #LifeStories #MidwestPodcast #NeighborhoodChronicles #HumanConnection #HeartfeltStories #UnforgettableMoments #ThoughtfulConversations #LocalVoices #GenuineStories #EllenPalmer #FreedomGrowthJoy
On this episode, we are joined by Joshua Hoyt, the Mayor of Farmington, Minnesota. Unlike some mayors out there in the world, Joshua walked for a solid 24 hours to raise money for Cancer Research! He's also an advocate for US military veterans and a former licensed general contractor who spends his time working as a keynote speaker and coaching others on business development. Joshua also has plenty to share about local governments!. Have you ever wondered how towns operate and serve the public? Join us for a Poli-Sci lesson and discussion in local politics. It sounds serious, but it's just Legacy Matters. #LegacyMatters #RealConversations #GetToKnowYourNeighbor #UpperMidwestStories #EverydayLegacy #AuthenticVoices #LifeStories #MidwestPodcast #NeighborhoodChronicles #HumanConnection #HeartfeltStories #UnforgettableMoments #ThoughtfulConversations #LocalVoices #GenuineStories #johsuahoyt #mayor
On this episode we have a conversation with Suzanna Newell of Team Humanity. Suzanna was injured by the COVID vaccine. She isn't out to convince anyone not to take the vaccine. She isn't grinding an axe. She's suffering valiantly after doing something she and others did for the betterment of all. And now she is working on helping the small percentage of people who also suffer from side effects due to the vaccine. The complexity in her message, and the message of people like her, is removing the politics. Every new treatment will have a cohort of participants who suffers ill effects. That isn't up for debate. What Suzanna is championing is a collective understanding of those very real consequences and an acknowledgement of the struggles that some people have endured. Leave your politics aside and listen to a thoughtful conversation about the realities of our plight as humans. Even good things can lead to unwanted outcomes.
This week Marc is out, so we invited former guest Mara Whack to join us as a co-host. We spent an action packed hour getting to know Chef Yia Vang of Union Hmong Kitchen, TPT's show Relish, and podcast Hmonglish. Of course we talk about food, but also learn about Hmong culture and history, and the importance of communication and grace. Natalie is a published author and one of the first two women to have paddled from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay. She also a great guest for a podcast! We talk about some of her canoeing exploits and then we take a little left turn and talk about other aspects of her life, as is our custom on this random winding river of a show. Join us for the ride! We do talk quite a bit about some of our favorite canoeing camps here Minnesota- Menogyn, Widjiwagan, Koochiching and Chippewa. This week we had a visit with Tyler Moon. Tyler reached out to us about being on the show and of course we invited him in. Because we purposefully don't do any research on our guests, we didn't know what to expect. Tyler is such a warm and positive person that he won us over immediately! Tyler is a supply chain worker at General Mills. Among other things, Tyler told us the story of very nearly dying in 2019 while running a 10k race here in Minneapolis. Obviously this event has shaped the course of his life. I really think you just need to listen to this show. We've invited Tyler back for a follow-up show in the future to find out how things are going with his life and his ministry. Oh, and he wasn't fibbing! Sam, Kate and Marc take a break from guests for a week and step back into The Comedy Corner Underground studio to discuss their busy summers and what is next for the show. We cover a wide range of topics, and begin our courting of legendary local artist Dave Witt, who happens to be a friend to two of our hosts. Easy prey, or so we hope!
Mercedes Austin of Mercury Mosaics in Minneapolis, MN, is joined in her studio by Sam for a conversation about new business ventures, tile mosaics and life in general. This is a very unique episode for Legacy Matters as we explore the possibility of spinning off a entrepreneurship centric version of the show. Mercedes studio is filled with beauty. The wood, the tile and the art make you feel at home instantly. This is a long episode with multiple breaks. The conversation is open and carefree, while staying focused on what it is like to pursue passions and take risks.
I love every show that we have recorded. Kate and Marc are the best people to have with me on this journey. I asked a recent acquaintance to be a guest on the show and instead she suggested Dan. Dan Waldschmidt attempted to cleave a tree in half with his head when he was 20. He didn't wake up that morning thinking "I hate trees", but something bad happened. I have no doubt that everything that followed immediately was horrific. I also have no doubt that he and those who knew him wish that his accident never happened- but life is messy. Dan is Dan. To make the most of your life and legacy is all there is. This show is another great example of why we record these stories and a tribute to the joy found in getting to know new people. It was an absolute pleasure to meet you Dan! Wear a dang helmet!
This week Legacy Matters welcomes the multi-talented Dana Thompson to the show. You may know her from the critically acclaimed and award winning restaurant Owamni in Minneapolis, but did you know about her musical talents? And what does it mean to be an Indigenous kitchen? There is much more to Owamni than an incredible meal, all made possible thanks to Dana following her passions. Follow our conversation that takes us from the Arrowhead to Minneapolis, with a few stops in between.
This week we were joined by Christy Costello, who happens to be a good friend of Monica LaPlante, another past guest- a past guest we remembered to take a photo with after the show. Next time Christy! We cover all the basics: trains, hot air balloons and when they collide. From the Iron Range to Nordeast Minneapolis, follow along as we get to know one of our local musicians.
Mara Wack and Nate Lewis join us for a conversation. Mara and Nate have recently begun providing pollinator friendly landscaping services here in South Minneapolis through their company Blissful Bees. Mara, who holds some fancy dietician type degree that sounds suspicious, has a lot to say about healthy eating and healthy living. Nate throws in a few words from time to time as well. Enjoy the show!
Well, Kate couldn't make it this week so Marc and Sam were left unsupervised. Joe Hatch is the city administrator for Newport Minnesota. For the political type, we sure did have fun getting to know him better! Listen along and learn almost absolutely nothing in the process. Fun times!
Restaurants are Still Crazy! Sometimes the Universe looks out for people. This week's guest is one of those people; Heather Asbury, proprietor of Heather's restaurant near Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. We enjoy a lot of food and drink talk with Heather in this episode. We also share experiences of working in the restaurant industry, and hear about the challenges she faced as a small business owner starting a business a week before covid breaks and shuts the world down! Spoiler alert- Heather's makes it! Grab a snack- this episode will make you hungry.
We consider the rise of Abimelech and why leadership matters in the church.
Faysal Ahmed, Minnesotan actor and all around gentle soul, joins us for a conversation in the Comedy Corner Underground. We learn of his early life and what brought he and his family to Minnesota. We also learn about the lucky turn of events that landed him his first major part in the 2013 film Captain Phillips. Faysal shares his unique thoughts on life and our purpose here.

Well here it is, another fantastic episode of Legacy Matters! We start out talking about the postal service and elections- we end up talking about everything and nothing- so the usual. Enjoy!

Marc and Sam enjoy a free flowing conversation with John Munson. John has been a successful part of the Minnesota music scene for decades. He's played around the world and still makes our fair state his home. Listen and you will understand why he is so well liked and respected by so many people.
We have a fun conversation with Analyah Schlaeger dos Santos. Analyah works with youth through MNIPL and has already, at only 27, been running programs and working for 10+ years. She's an amazing person so go ahead and listen.
Sam, Kate and Marc wander paths not meant for travel. We talk about Rhinelander beer, Malort and Chucky Cheese, amongst other senseless topics.

Ricardo began studying ballet when he was six years old. At seventeen, he enrolled in the Yuri Mandich Circus School in Havana, the national, Russian-style state circus school. There, he trained for four years to be a professional circus performer. In 1994, while performing in Colombia at Circo Egred Hermanos, Ricardo and other performers in the Cuban troupe defected. It was a huge scandal in Havana: Never before had such an important group of performers defected. For Ricardo Sosa, it was the beginning of a new career. Ricardo has since settled in the United States, where he has worked extensively in nightclubs, casinos, and circuses, including Circus Circus and the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada; Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle, Washington and San Francisco, California; Universoul Circus; and Circus Sarasota. What a week. The spine-tingling moments were huge, as were the disappointments. We heard from Grace Tame and Brittany Higgins, speaking brilliantly at the National Press Club. We heard an apology from Scott Morrison and others, although it was limited in what it covered. We saw the Religious Discrimination Bill going to hell and the true colours of those who were pushing for it. We discuss on this and more on this week's ep of The Women's Agenda Podcast, made possible thanks to Charles Sturt University. What does your name say about you? Do you have a lasting legacy attached to your family name? And if not, can you start building a legacy that future generations will be proud to carry? The Alessi family name would not be what it is today without Rev. John Alessi, Steve Alessi's father, who pastored in Miami for over 60 years and was instrumental in launching Steve and Mary into their calling of ministry. Pastor John exemplified service to his church, his family and his community, and was married for over 60 years to his wonderful wife, Ann Alessi. Rev. John Alessi was called home to his eternal reward in October 2020, but his legacy lives on on in two generations of Alessis that continue to operate in the family business of ministry.Exactly one year following his passing, Miami-Dade County honored Pastor John's work by naming the street in front of his church Rev.
