Thom Francis talks with poet Howard Kogan about the loss of his father and his poem “Mourning Becomes Her”that was a finalist for the 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize -------- The Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Contest began in late 2015 and announced its first winners, including Dawn Marar of Delmar, in the spring of 2016. Initially, most submissions came from New York State, but the contest quickly grew into an international event, now attracting entries from around 40 countries each year. The contest is edited by Bob Sharkey and sponsored by his family in memory of Stephen DiBiase, Bob's best childhood friend. The two grew up together in the Libbytown neighborhood of Portland, Maine, where they spent their days exploring the fields and marshes between their homes. Stephen served as an Army photographer in Vietnam and, upon returning, helped Bob secure conscientious objector status. Stephen tragically drowned in 1973 near Bath, Maine, and the contest was named in his honor. The DiBiase contest was created to offer a more inclusive and welcoming alternative to traditional poetry competitions. There are no entry fees, no line or page limits, and no restrictions on subject matter, form, publication history, or age, making it especially appealing to younger poets. Each year, approximately $2,500 in prize money is awarded, with $500 going to the first-place winner and the rest distributed among top finishers. Bob personally reads every submission and selects 30 to 40 poems to forward to a panel of judges. The panel consists of three permanent judges and the previous year's first-place winner, all of whom review the poems independently and submit their top five choices along with honorable mentions. The combined scores determine the final rankings. This year one of the finalists was Hudson Valley Writers Guild member Howard Kogan for his poem “Mourning Becomes Her.” Before Howard reads his poem, he tells me more about the inspiration of the piece and why he submitted it ten years after first writing it. After that, we will go back and hear Howard read his poem “Advice to Poets” that he shared ten years ago this week at the “Up The River, Issue Three” launch party and reading at McGeary's in downtown Albany. Howard J Kogan is a retired psychotherapist and poet. He and his wife Libby moved to Ashland, MA in 2018 after spending thirty years in the Taconic Mountains of rural upstate New York. His poems have appeared in Still Crazy, Naugatuck River Review, Up the River, Poetry Ark, Farming Magazine, Jewish Currents, Stone House Museum Newsletter, Literary Gazette and many other publications. His collections of poems include “Indian Summer” (Square Circle Press, 2011), “General Store Poems” (Benevolent Bird Press, 2014), “A Chill in the Air” (Square Circle Press, 2016), and his recent book, “Before I Forget” (Square Circle Press, 2023). In episode 22, Johnny talks to music supervisor, movie producer and music manager Tarquin Gotch. Tarquin's career saw him rise to Head of A&R at Arista Records in the 1980s - overseeing acts like The Thompson Twins, Simple Minds, The Stray Cats, and The Beat. He then moved to Warners, transitioning Prince, Madonna and many other American acts into the UK. Moving into music management he oversaw The Beat, Stephen Duffy, The Dream Academy, Hugh Harris, General Public, XTC, Roger McGuinn from the Byrds and Jon Lord from Deep Purple. In a chance encounter in 1984, through his actress and model friend Kelly LeBrock, Tarquin met writer-director John Hughes on the set of Weird Science. He went on to become music supervisor on the John Hughes films Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, She's Having A Baby, The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck. Running John Hughes' film company in the 1990s, Tarquin executive produced the films Curly Sue, Dutch, Only The Lonely, and Home Alone. He has since produced both film and TV including the 1998 film Still Crazy, the TV series Crocodile Shoes with Jimmy Nail, the documentary series Cars That Rock with Brian Johnson, and the return of prison sitcom Porridge for the BBC. Tarquin currently manages Brian Johnson of AC/DC, and founding members of the Police, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland. Johnny's talk with Tarquin covers his work curating Life Moves Pretty Fast, a boxset celebrating the music of John Hughes soundtracks, released on Demon Records in 2022. They discuss Tarquin's time working alongside John Hughes and John Candy, his process of putting songs in front of John Hughes for consideration, and which composer he believes revolutionised the art of film scoring. This conversation was recorded online at the beginning of February 2024. Welcome back to another episode of Bad Dads Film Review, where today we're dialling the time machine back to the late '90s for a dose of rock-n-roll nostalgia with Still Crazy.Still Crazy, a 1998 British comedy-drama directed by Brian Gibson, takes us on a hilarious and heart-warming journey with a fictional '70s rock band, Strange Fruit, as they attempt a comeback after a tumultuous split two decades earlier. It's a story about second chances, the bonds of friendship, and the enduring power of music. The film opens with the band members leading their separate, somewhat lacklustre lives. When they decide to reunite, we're treated to a rollercoaster of old rivalries, forgotten romances, and the challenges of reliving past glories. "Still Crazy" is not just about the music; it's about the personal struggles and triumphs of each band member as they navigate this new chapter.Still Crazy balances humour with poignant moments. The film is a nostalgic trip with a soundtrack that captures the essence of the '70s rock scene. It's a warm-hearted look at aging rockers who aren't ready to hang up their guitars just yet. While it may not have stormed the box offices, Still Crazy has garnered a cult following over the years, praised for its witty script, dynamic performances, and a soundtrack that's a character in its own right. As dads, there's something relatable about revisiting past passions and the idea of 'getting the band back together.' We'll discuss the film's themes of reconciliation, the passage of time, and the joy of reigniting old dreams. Plus, it might just inspire us to share stories of our own 'glory days.'So, whether you're a fan of classic rock, love a good comeback story, or just enjoy a film with heart and humor, Still Crazy is a must-watch. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Buying a new car today is more painful than ever. Auto prices have risen a shocking 30% in just the past few years. Many used cars aren't much cheaper. The pandemic crunch is partly to blame – high demand and scarce supply caused prices to spike along with everything else. But car prices remain astronomical even though those shortages have largely eased. For a lot of middle class Americans, a new car is now out of reach. And that's just fine with some major automakers. Bloomberg reporters David Welch and Keith Naughton join this episode to explain why General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co., among other companies, are embracing scarcity and high prices as the new normal. At the same time, China is ramping up production and rising as a leading carmaker. Reporter Tom Hancock describes how the country is churning out millions of electric and gasoline-powered vehicles for customers around the world, with one notable exception: the US. Today, El is back with updates on herself, her life, her week, and more! She is recording late so don't mind the yawns lol! Enjoy!
Episode #116: Still Crazy Here (Song starts at 3:43) Hi there, For this episode, I dug up a box of old diaries and found the year/week where I wrote this song. I read through some passages. It turns out I'd left my stage piano at the gig. So I wasn't able to write songs… and I wrote: 'If I'm not being creative, I feel terrible!'. I was flat. Didn't see the point in watching TV, I was disgruntled to to say the least. Then something happened. I tidied up my desk, found 15 lots of lyrics, went for a run, had some vivid dreams and then....got my piano back and started getting creative. Song # 459 from July 1999, came from cutting out pictures from magazines and sticking them into a collage - pictures of Elvis next to the dolphins and Star Wars characters. Yes, there's nothing like cutting out pictures and making a collage to just play, and see where it takes you. In this case, I mention it in my lyrics and away I go. The lyrics observe quite openly and partly tongue in cheek : ‘I'm still crazy here, still crazy now.' It's a description of how it feels to be a creative soul. Cutting pictures out of magazines smacks of therapy, doesn't it? Perhaps it was.. perhaps I was just gently getting in touch with the creative side of myself again. Currently (back here in 2022) I'm flat out painting seascapes for an exhibition which opens in July. I'm mixing a solo album, recording these episodes, I publish a blog post each week, teach 22 students how to play the piano Monday's and Tuesday's.. and that's just part of it. Yes, here in 2022, I'm flat out. Back in 1999, I was trying to get busy, here in Melbourne, 2 years into the new adventure, having moved from New Zealand (the lyrics say I 'jumped the river to start again'). I'd managed to sell my first 70 piano solo CDs (Eridanus River Music (streaming now - CDs available). I was making a living from being a piano man a few times a week. I was spending my daytimes writing songs. So things were slowly starting to happen for me. And when I was writing songs I was happy again. It's the same for me now, after all these years. I've written another song this week, and started another couple. I'll send them to my song writer buddy in New Zealand, Paul Dredge. We have a new album dropping in about 3 weeks. Very excited about this. "Melody, melody melody, where do you come from?" I say this in this episode. It's a mystery and I'm very content to leave it that way. In amongst the analysing and exploring of the songwriting process, which I'm really enjoying on these episodes, so much comes to the surface to be discussed. And then there's a this underlying beautiful mysterious energy that underlies it all. Dipping into this realm is such a pleasure. By the way, I think anyone can develop the knack to a degree... Keeping a diary, learning an art (like songwriting) helps. Yep, it's the ‘doing' that counts. Ok, join me back in time, now. You'll hear about how it feels to be a songwriter and you'll hear how ‘Still Crazy Here' came together. And you'll get to have a read through a couple of diary excerpts with me. It's all good fun here, this podcast is constantly evolving.. (Still crazy here!) This is the blog www.petepascoe.wordpress.com where you can see photos of the painting and cartoons I mention, plus the seascape I've just started. You can also read the lyrics to 'Still Crazy Here'. I publish the lyrics here each week. There's 116 blogs to look back through if you feel like it!.That'll lead you on to 13 albums of mine in different genres (solo and with others).Enjoy! Here we go, I hope you enjoy this episode.

Jeff Lloyd and PFF's John Kosko talk through the Browns pre-season win over the Colts from the PFF lens. Montgomery and Gilbert showed well, Montgomery is stringing together a nice summer. Gilbert playing well but in a tough battle. D'earnest Johnson a nice job of picking up what the defense is gicing him. The OL still a work in progress after what is now they starting 5. Mack Wilson showed crazy activity but showed that there is still a rookie inside that body. Redwine is better with the play in front of him. DL most seem to be getting some solid play in whether it's inside or out.
