From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Strange Paradises Visual artist Brian Frink of Mankato is looking forward to an exhibit newly opened at the Carnegie Art Center featuring the sculptures of Todd Shanafelt, Pocket Toscani and Jim Shrosbree. “Strange Paradises” is on view through March 22, with an opening artist reception Friday from 5-7 p.m. Brian says: Todd Shanafelt and Pocket Toscani are both Mankato residents, and Jim Shrosbree is from out-of-state. Jim and Todd are ceramic artists, and Pocket is more of a traditional sculptor, but what their work shares together is a kind of playful quirkiness. They are very abstract in their approach. But I would also say they're kind of obliquely recognizable in terms of the content in the work. There;s also an interesting intersection of functionality and non-functional in all three of them.  They are also very involved in painting and drawing. So, the exhibition will include their three-dimensional work as well as their two-dimensional work, which I think adds another texture and level of interest to what they're presenting.A show about making the most of the days we haveTheater lover Brad Pappas of St. Louis Park is looking forward to seeing the indie rock musical “Hundred Days.” It runs through March 22 at Theatre Elision, a black box theater in Crystal. The show is 80 minutes with no intermission. Brad describes the show: Abigail and Shaun decide to get married three weeks after they meet. Abigail is plagued by these dreams, and she's convinced that the man she loves is going to die within in a little over three months. Abigail and Shaun concoct a plan. They're going to live their whole lives in 100 days. They'll have Halloween in the morning, Christmas in the afternoon, birthdays at sundown. This performance sounds so intriguing to me because it's eight musicians. They're all a part of the show, but they're all playing instruments throughout the performance.Opera shrouded in mysteryBurlesque dancer Renata Nijiya of Minneapolis is intrigued by An Opera Theatre's “Opera Underground.” There are four performances whose exact Twin Cities location and details will be revealed to ticket holders 24 hours before showtime. Performances are March 12 and March 13 in northeast Minneapolis at 7 p.m., March 16 in the Longfellow neighborhood at 5 p.m. and March 25, 7 p.m. in the West Seventh area of St. Paul, with ASL interpretation. Shows run 90 minutes. Renata loves the ways AOT makes opera accessible, through the work it chooses, its pay-as-you-can performances and ASL interpretation. She also offers this tip: “After each show, it's going to roll into an after-party and have a local band performing … each location has a different local band,” she said.

Fading Dreams: Leaving the Farm Behind

I stopped by Driftless Oaks Farm this week, and as I looked at the property, it hit me that it is a fast fading dream. I realized that I am turning the page and leaving the farm behind, and even though it sounds sad, this epiphany had to happen for me to move forward here at the Landing. In Episode 231, I discuss some observations, memories and epiphanies I had as I looked over the farmhouse, outbuildings and property. It is no secret that moving to a farm/homestead was my dream. All you have to do is look back through the archive of Small Scale Life Podcast episodes, and you can see that I was working hard to move out of the city and move to Western Wisconsin. In fact, Julie and I looked at some properties in 2017 before moving from our rental house in St. Louis Park to North Minneapolis, Minnesota. The timing wasn't right until 20. Eagle's Ridge We purchased the Eagles Ridge property with a dream to build a house, garden and pole barn there. It was a 2 acre property on the Apple River just north of New Richmond, Wisconsin. We worked hard clearing buckthorn, prickly ash and honey suckle (all invasives) from the property and clearing the top of the ridge so we could see the river. We also cleared down by the water and put in a long switchback path down the 60-foot bluff from the top of the ridge to the river. COVID, riots, and global shortages pushed the cost of building a home to astronomical heights, and we decided to pivot and go a different direction. Early one morning, Julie and I woke up early, and she convinced me to put Eagle's Ridge on a shelf and start to move on from that fading dream. It was not the right time to build a house. Driftless Oaks Farm Julie's brother in Texas was looking at homes and properties for us, and he found Driftless Oaks Farm. We took a look at the property and the price, and we fell in love with it. A major dream had been accomplished, and we couldn't wait to move in as soon as possible! Not all that glitters is gold, however. We were overwhelmed by the amount of work there, and we also ran into a massive roadblock: the house. We bought the farm with the intention of hosting gatherings there with our family and friends. I even started planning homesteading gatherings at the farm where folks would come and listen to great homesteaders and gardeners talk about things that they were doing on their homesteads. Think Self-Reliance Festival in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin! The house was small, and we found out that contractors were not keen on working with and adding on to a 1900-era house. The farmhouse was small, and it would have been difficult to add on to the house with the stone foundation in the front and cellar in the back. Contractors recommended bringing in a bulldozer and starting from scratch. Did we have fading dreams once we did some diligence? Yes, absolutely. It happened fast on the farm, especially after major life events in 2022. After Danny passed away, we decided it was time to sell and move away from the little farm. We did not see how we could improve the farmhouse economically and make it work for us, so it was time to put it on the market and move forward. This Week's Epiphany When I stopped by the farm this week and observed it from the neighbor's hill, it suddenly occurred to me that the young man that purchased the property made some significant changes for the better. He had the creativity, audacity, tenacity and the network to make some things happen. I realized after looking at our little farm for a while that our farm life was one of many fading dreams, and it was time for me to turn the page and move on forever. Prosecutors in Minnesota have upgraded charges against Steven Frane Bailey, 56, after he allegedly drove his BMW X5 through the patio of a crowded restaurant, killing two people and injuring nine others. The incident occurred on September 1 at Park Tavern in St. Louis Park, a suburb of Minneapolis. Bailey was initially charged with vehicular homicide and other drunk driving offenses. However, after reviewing surveillance footage, prosecutors added two counts of third-degree murder, citing his "depraved mind" in committing a dangerous act. According to a probable cause affidavit, Bailey hit a parked vehicle in the restaurant's lot before attempting to flee. As he accelerated, his SUV struck another vehicle and plowed through a metal fence into the restaurant's outdoor seating area. Authorities say Bailey showed no signs of braking as he drove through the patio, striking multiple people and tables. “After hitting the Black SUV, defendant accelerates straight past a two-lane drive in the parking lot and 11 parking spaces before plowing his vehicle through a metal fence and into the patio seating area,” detectives wrote. His vehicle finally stopped after hitting two boulders. Among the victims were Kristina Marie Folkerts, 30, who was trapped under the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, and Gabriel Quinn Harvey, 30, who died later at a hospital. According to the affidavit, Bailey stumbled from the car and fell. Officers reported hearing him say, “I'm f—-” and “I'm probably going to jail.” He also claimed he intended to brake but accidentally accelerated. His speech was slurred and his eyes were watery. When informed about the field sobriety tests, Bailey allegedly remarked, “You don't need to do fields, I know what I did.” The affidavit stated that Bailey had a blood alcohol content of .325, which is more than four times the legal limit of 0.08. After being taken to Hennepin County Jail, he was informed of the vehicular manslaughter charges. Bailey allegedly responded, “You've got to be kidding me” and “My life's pretty much f—– now, isn't it?” In addition to the murder charges, prosecutors are seeking an “upward sentencing departure” due to Bailey's five prior drunk driving convictions, his high blood alcohol level, and the presence of children at the restaurant during the crash. The community has rallied around the victims, raising over $200,000 for Folkerts' family through a GoFundMe campaign. Folkerts, a mother of three and a Park Tavern employee, was remembered for her passion for photography and her love for her daughters. Harvey, who worked as a health unit coordinator at Methodist Hospital, was also honored through fundraising efforts. He was set to graduate nursing school in December. Bailey is currently being held on a $500,000 bond at Hennepin County Jail, with a court date set for October 1. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? People are gathering at Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park to remember Kristina Folkerts on Thursday. Folkerts was killed last week when a driver slammed his vehicle into the patio at the Park Tavern, where she was working as a server. The driver, Steven Bailey, has been charged in the case. Authorities said Bailey's blood alcohol level was more than four times the legal limit. He also had five previous DWI convictions.A DWI conviction on its own isn't always an indicator of substance-use disorder. But most drivers in alcohol-involved fatal crashes have high blood alcohol levels — at or above point one five percent — according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That's about seven or eight drinks in an hour, far beyond what the CDC considers binge drinking. The tragedy makes us wonder how to prevent further tragedies like this one and why people who need help with substance use don't always seek it. And if they seek it, don't always find it.William Moyers is vice president of Public Affairs and Community Relations at Hazelden Foundation and the author of “Broken Open: What Painkillers Taught Me about Life and Recovery.”He joined MPR News guest host Nina Moini to talk about the landscape of addiction recovery in Minnesota.

That's a technology that prevents a driver from starting their car without first passing a breathalyzer test. That restriction on Bailey had expired at the time of the crash. The recent tragedy has raised the question of whether stricter penalties or restrictions could prevent future deaths. And a couple of lawmakers have said this question will be on the agenda during the 2025 legislative session. DFL Sen. Ron Latz represents St. Louis Park and he's chair of the chamber's Judiciary and Public Safety Committee. He joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to explain what he hopes to see changed at the capitol.

A man facing charges in Sunday's drunk driving crash that killed two people and injured nine others at Park Tavern in St. Louis Park is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon. There are questions surrounding his DWI record. During yesterday's news conference outlining the charges, Hennepin County Attorney Moriarty said it was “hugely problematic” that Steven Bailey still had a driver's license. Bailey had an ignition interlock installed in his car for several years after convictions for drunk driving. The Minnesota Department of Health estimates one in seven Minnesotans has at least one DWI. The national group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) argues ignition locks and other technology preventing an intoxicated driver from operating their car could help reduce drunken driving deaths. For more on these steps, MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with Lauren Johnson, marketing and community engagement manager for MADD's Upper Midwest Region.

If you've ever watched a kid at play, you've probably seen a happy kid.Maybe you've watched children at your local park building forts out of sticks, or on the basketball court going for layups and pretending to be their favorite Timberwolves player.Maybe you've seen your own child lost in focus on a Lego creation or playing restaurant with dolls and stuffed animals.Knowing how to find happiness in play is important for all ages. But play does a lot more than bring joy. Unstructured play, the kind that children get up to on their own without a lot of adult guidance, turns out to be one of the best ways to learn. And, there is concern that this kind of open-ended play is on the decline with the rise of screen time and structured activities.MPR News guest host Chris Farrell talked about the importance of play and how to encourage it for the children in our lives.Guests: Jodie Riek is an associate professor in early childhood development in the College of Education and Human Service Professions at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She trains teachers on how to use play in the classroom to help children learn and has been an early childhood and elementary school teacher, and a childcare center director.Mike Huber is director of curriculum at Rise Early Learning Center in St. Louis Park. We've been away for a few weeks while we finished up a two-year renovation project here at Amro Music. We're thrilled with the results, and excited to serve our education partners more effectively than ever. We've posted a video on our YouTube channel that shows some of the improvements that we've made to the store, our repair shop, and our Director Services department, but there's nothing like seeing it all in person, so if you're ever in Memphis, we hope you'll take some time to stop by. We would love to see you. This week we have the second half of Nick Averwater's conversation with David Davis. The first part of the interview was posted back in May of 2024. David is a Music Teacher at Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School in St. Louis Park, MN, a city of around 50,000 people just west of Minneapolis. In 2023, David was named to the Yamaha 40 Under 40 list of Music Educators. In this episode David shares his thoughts about music literacy and how it's defined. He'll also tell us what the first few weeks of school is like in his band room. And we'll learn more about the importance of diversity in terms of repertoire, ensembles, and instrumentation in his school's music program. Here's our conversation with Dr. Anita Collins that was mentioned in the interview.
