During this installment of the program, Jim Ellermeyer continues his dialogue with Chris Whitlatch, the author of "Notorious Pittsburgh." They delve into the emergence of vice in Pittsburgh, the noteworthy figure Dante "Tex" Gill, who was a trans man that was openly accepted by society at the time and a leader in the underground scene. Additionally, they compare these individuals to Andrew Carnegie and his contributions to the city's welfare during that period, as well as explore how this led to the state of disarray on Liberty Avenue after the late 1970s. The discussion also includes the notorious serial killer Richard Henkel, who attempted to commit "insurance fraud" through murder. Lastly, the show covers the story of the Christmas bombing that caused vice establishments to shut down for the holiday. Notorious Pittsburgh is available in paperback or Kindle format on Amazon at https://amzn.to/3oJV5II, and you can keep up with Chris by visiting his website, www.christopherwhitlatch.com. Queens has changed a lot in the last few decades — and so has District 28. New immigrant communities have taken root and the district is, on the whole, pretty diverse. But most Black folks still live on the Southside, and the schools below Liberty Avenue continue to struggle.A lot of parents and educators agree that there needs to be some change in District 28. But the question remains: what kind of change? When we asked around, more diversity wasn't necessarily at the top of everybody's list. In fact, from the north and south, we heard a lot of the same kind of thing: "leave our kids where they are and give all the schools what they need."So what do the schools on the Southside really need? And what's at stake for Southside families when we "leave those kids where they are" and fail to meet their needs for generations?Click here for a full episode transcript.Join us at the Queens Public Library on December 15!Are you using School Colors in your own teaching or organizing? News of a homophobic law, known as Proposition 14, arrives on Liberty Avenue. Ted seems to have forgotten how revenge works. Lindsay has a chance to reconcile with her parents. Justin makes some decisions about what he wants to do with his life. Michael and Brian finally reach the boiling point. E'Shel is somewhere in a corner crying. Ken is busy spreading scandalous rumors about Ron and Nancy at the Country Club.
The arrest of David Bonola in the Orsoyla Gaal Case. Investigation Orsolya Gaal, Cassie Carli #NYPD #MarcusSpanevelo #DavidBonola #ForestHills #HandymanNew details emerged Friday in the heinous murder of Queens mom Orsolya Gaal — from how cops cleverly collected some key evidence, to the steps the suspect's lawyer is taking to fight the case. On Tuesday, three days after police say David Bonola, 44, butchered Gaal in her Forest Hills home, NYPD detectives fished out a pair of bloody brown boots from a sanitation truck after it pulled away from the suspect's home, according to law enforcement sources and witnesses Friday. “It was in the afternoon. … The cops came and stopped the truck,” said Harry Maraj, a construction worker who witnessed the moment while sitting in Tropical Jade Roti Express on Liberty Avenue. They took some bags out of the truck and opened them up,” he said. “They took a white bag from truck and a pair of brown boots. The boots weren't in any bag. They put everything in big brown paper bags and left.” Law enforcement sources say they'd already had Bonola on their radar after learning he'd done work at Gaal's home and had an intimate relationship with her. They were surveilling his home and waiting for his garbage to be picked up so they could look through it for clues, sources said. It's unclear why detectives waited for the truck to leave the home to nab the footwear. The bloody boots, which Bonola allegedly wore while stabbing Gaal nearly 60 times, were tested for DNA and are a crucial element in the case investigators are building against him, sources have said. They took some bags out of the truck and opened them up,” he said.“They took a white bag from truck and a pair of brown boots. The boots weren't in any bag. They put everything in big brown paper bags and left.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support
Ken and E'Shel are referring to this episode as The One With The Pulp. It'll make sense when you listen. We can all agree that it's been A LOT lately on Liberty Avenue. This 'slight pause' of an episode finds our characters in conversations regarding recent events. Melanie is winning all the awards for passive aggression. Hunter's future in-laws stop by for a parent to parent chat. Debbie gives Brian some words of wisdom from Vic. Emmett and Drew try to define their entanglement in their infamous motel room. Ken is mourning the loss of his motel time. E'Shel is dusting off her stationary bike.
Michael is stressed about Melanie’s pregnancy and Lindsay just might appreciate having an ally in that corner. Emmett sends Ted for a weekend getaway, but he gets sidetracked on the drive. Ben receives a call regarding his mystery nephew. Brian catches Justin working on a risky late night project. Other topics of discussion include sex pigs, internet scams, and power couples.
Death makes its way to Liberty Avenue, taking Captain Astro and a nameless person with it. Michael grieves the loss of his hero; Debbie goes toe to toe with a grouchy and insensitive detective; Brian and Justin have opposing responses to a potential threat; and Lindsay makes a surprising discovery about her late grandmother. But this episode isn’t all death and danger! George is GETTING. HIS. LIFE. Thanks to Emmett Honeycutt!
The death of a New York infant has been labeled a homicide. Pix11 reports that authorities were called to a home in October 2020, off of Liberty Avenue in Jamaica, about an unresponsive child. When deputies arrived, they found 7-month-old Kameri Garriques unconscious but with no signs of physical trauma. First responders rushed the infant to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators said the baby appeared to be malnourished. As CrimeOnline reported, the child’s mother, Carla Garriques, 28, said that she kept him on a Biblical vegan diet and wasn’t “going to carry a fat a**child.” Garriques reportedly admitted that her baby was small for his age, but she claimed she, too, has always been small, adding that a vegan diet prevented her son from consuming “formula where it has chemicals in it.”Garriques told the New York Post that she did initially feed her son baby formula, but started the vegan diet after her son developed thrush. Garriques’ mother, who also spoke to the Post, interjected and said the baby was fed “fruits and vegetables…crushed with boiled potatoes.”Joining Nancy Grace today:Melissa Hoppmeyer - Chief, Special Victims & Family Violence Unit, Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office, Co-Founder of Right Response Consulting, "No Grey Zone" Podcast, www.rightresponseconsulting @NoGreyZoneRRCDr. Angela Arnold - Psychiatrist, Atlanta GA www.AngelaArnoldMD.comDr. Michelle Dupre - Forensic Pathologist and former Medical Examiner, Author: “Homicide Investigation Field Guide” & "Investigating Child Abuse Field Guide", Ret. Šejma Fere creates collages, mixed media artworks and installations. Her artworks deal with potential of multiple narratives. She is discovering hidden values and uses of found material to create new structures out of it. Her paintings are created in the mode of free associations from numerous fragments, using the recycled materials, technique of collage and digital process. There, by means of the non-linear narration about private sphere, she explores the entanglement of borders of intimate and public space and investigates the ideological constructs, gender stereotypes and the economic conditions that govern home and everyday life. Sewing patterns, lists, charts and statistic data appropriated from textbooks, documents, furniture catalogs and lifestyle magazines are parts of reality that intrude the private sphere and indicate a failed attempt to adapt to prescribed and homogenized world of mass culture. By superimposing one structure onto another, domestic surrounding is presented as a stage where characters live their reality brought by modern life and technology. These multiple perspectives create spatial and temporal disorientation. It is an open work where viewers fill the gaps and create their own interpretation, becoming a part of this imagined world. She graduated painting and printmaking. Lives and works in Belgrade. In the interview Sejma mentioned the following; Norient, audio visual gallery and community for the sound of the world. "Among Women: Serbian Contemporary Art", curated by Rachel Klipa, 937 Gallery, 937 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 (opening on September 6, 2021) "We are alive", exhibition of Saša Stojanović and Šejma Fere, Gallery Šok Koridor, Art Klinika, Novi Sad (14 September-30 October, 2021 in Šok koriodor, Art klinika, Novi Sad) Books mentioned: Tomi Ungerer, children books, J.P. This super smart and satirical episode explores hypocrisy from several angles. Seriously, it’s such great writing! The gay-social-consience of Pittsburgh, Howard Bellweather, hits Liberty Avenue with some harsh words about its newly appointed hero, Brian Kinney. Michael feels like life and Brian are moving on without him. Justin and Gus take some very important steps! Emmett’s new employees are not quite what they seem, and both Emmett and Ted have to let their personal heroes off their pedestals. Also, we discuss Gay As Blazes, the show within the show!! Other things to note: Ken accuses E’Shel of being Michael-insensitive – she’s not! Well, not 100%! Also we are not shading comic book fans. We love comics! We’re just making a specific point about Michael.

This episode is full of new beginnings and chances to begin again for our Liberty Avenue Gang. Michael is trying to rediscover his footing, and Emmett helps him find a way to pay the rent in the meantime. Ted’s extracurricular activities in the office land him in some big trouble with his boss. Inspired by a classic ‘from the mouth of babes‘ moment, Melanie and Lindsay revisit their conversation on marriage. Brian tries to find the key to unlock Justin’s trapped memories. Fortunately, this episode makes us laugh enough to keep the tears at bay. Mostly!
This one is all about daddies! Having one and being one. Brian agrees to keep Gus over the Leather Ball Weekend, but plans and intentions go awry when Jack Kinney shows up to deliver some news. Michael plays the role of ‘the wicked step-mother’ to Dr. David’s son, Hank. Ted visits a different kind of daddy to help him get out of his rut. Tune in to find out how we rate all the daddies on Liberty Avenue in this episode.
Brian faces his sexual harassment suit head on, with the help of a few friends. Michael’s relationship with Dr. David is tested by his loyalty to Brian. AGAIN! Emmett gets his success story, and Ted delivers the speech of the year. A vigilante by the name of Justin Taylor descends upon the alleys of Liberty Avenue with vengeance on his mind. Also, E’Shel and Ken have a very important discussion about shirts and Babylon. Speaking of shirts! Check out our new store at https://libertydinerdish.square.site/
Today we’re talking about episode 6 of Season 5, and it’s called “Bored out of Ya Fucking Mind” It first aired in the US on June 19th, 2005. I was written by Del Shores, his seventh of eight teleplays. He also produced 41 episodes, or half of the series. “Bored out of Ya Fucking Mind” was directed by Alex Chapple. He directed 8 episodes and this is his last one. Alex Chapple is probably the most accomplished director post-Queer as Folk, working on shows like The Americans, every flavor of Law and Order, Stargate Universe, Chicago Fire, Blue Bloods, Elementary, and Chicago PD to name just a few. Synopsis: A newcomer on the scene appears and challenges Brian’s dominance of Liberty Avenue by rejecting him! Justin continues to yearn for a relationship with Brian that is more like Ben and Michael’s. Hunter’s mostly unseen struggle with his classmates knowing that he’s HIV positive and a retired hooker comes to a head, and he runs away from home. Emmett goes a bit too far as Queer Guy and scandalously shows off underwear on live television. Debbie realizes that she’s bored and returns to work at the Diner with Carl’s blessing, and Ted starts a revenge game with the guy that pity-fucked him two years ago at Pride.
Michael takes it upon himself to throw a ten year anniversary surprise party for Melanie and Lindsay who proceed to air all of their dirty laundry in front of 25 guests. Ben and Michael decide that it’s time to leave Liberty Avenue and buy a house of their own next to two other gay couples with children. Justin is still in Hollywood, but Brian cancels his trip to see him for reasons that we can’t quite figure out. It ends up not mattering because the studio pulls the plug on Rage and Justin will be headed back to Pittsburg in the next episode anyway. In a hilarious runner, Debbie and Carl walk in on Emmett being plowed by somebody named Shawn causing him to start looking for his own place. In a not so hilarious runner, Ted meets a Twink that tries to force-feed him pizza. “Move and Leave” was directed by Kelly Makin. His 8th of eleven episodes. He directed last season’s “Irritation and Separation” that we unanimously loved. He also directed the season four finale which we unanimously hated. It was written by show runners Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman and they wrote the season 4 finale too.

It was a freezing cold day on January 25th, 2017 when a young athletic, academically gifted college student named Dakota James was enjoying a fun night out with a group of co-workers for happy hour in Station Square. After happy hour Dakota and one of his female co-workers decide to take the local city train to downtown Pittsburgh, stopping at a few bars before arriving at 941 Saloon. A popular LGBTQ hang out on Liberty Avenue. After a few hours Dakota and his co-worker head to Images, another bar on Liberty Avenue, where he was refused service for being too intoxicated and given some water, before he started eating someone else's left behind slice of pizza that was laying on the bar.Listen now on Himalaya! October 17, 2016 #YaJagoffPodcast / Episode #042 We had an awesome time at the new escape room, The Imaginarium, in Harmarville! You know it has to be a fantastic experience when Bricolage and ScareHouse are involved in designing something together. It’s not scary at all! Jeff and Rod, some of the creative team join us in the Magician’s Room. And, where else would we interview Pittsburgh’s favorite magician, Lee Terbosic? He’s going to suspend himself above Wood Street and Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh to celebrate a very “Pittsburgh” anniversary of Harry Houdini. Then, Black Craft Spirits guy, and Washington County native, Bobby Schubenski talks about whiskey, being a reality TV star and changing diapers. YaJagoff! Podcast - SHOW NOTES: Episode 42, Lee Terbosic’s Big Escape, Whiskey and the Imaginarium Escape Room Music: The Stickers, “Summer Time “ 01:04 We all had a late night so… (we were on the Pink Carpet of the David Alan Fashion Show - which raised over $14K for the cancer treatment and research – the night before recording this podcast). 04:34 Jeff Carpenter and Rod Scwhartz talk about the The Imaginarium. It’s a cooperative venture escape room between some of Pittsburgh’s most creative brains, including The Bricolage Theater and The ScareHouse. You have one hour to solve the escape path in this totally submersive experience. 11:47 Bobby Schubenski left his Washington County home for at age 17 to play music. Today, he runs Black Craft Spirits worldwide, with his fiancé Rosa Mendes, he’s a reality TV star on the WWE Total Divas show and he’s crushin’ it as a new dad! Thanks to Bobby and Black Craft for sponsoring this episode. 22:09 Magician Lee Terbosic is about to do something totally awesome. He’s going to suspend himself more than 80 feet above the intersection of Liberty and Wood Streets, November 6th, and escape from a strait jacket! He will be celebrating Harry Houdini’s 100th anniversary. Harry did the same escape in the same place 100 years ago to the day! 36:41 Big thanks to Cathy from Frosted Envy for making pumpkin spice cupcakes for all of us! Seriously… we did not dunk them in the Black Craft Whiskey but, we could have! They made for a great breakfast!
