Henry Lee Summer latched on to the sound of pop and rock radio in the 80s and rode that bad boy to a couple of late-decade hits, and a handful of good, heartland rock and roll albums.  But in his home state - Indiana - Summer was more than couple nice radio hits and a handful of albums. Weird that he could be, maybe? Really not. His story is like a lot of local-but-more-music heroes. Cleveland and Providence and Pittsburgh and Toronto. Artists like Donnie Iris, Kim Mitchell, John Cafferty, and Joe Grushecky.   Henry Lee Summer mined the sound of late 80's rock and roll with his own little twist, influenced by Top 40 AM radio hooks, and, in the best way, a product of live sets in the smoke and noise and chaos of a live rock and roll club. His is the sound of the Midwest. The studio recordings - most of them - shined up for presentation to the masses, and the live shows greased and gritted for the faithful. And he played great shows. Evenings that turned revival-ish. A shared act of live, loud, shakin' crowd-into-it rock and roll.  Henry Lee, well beyond most of his hit-making days, brought the goods, man. His last hit was the early 90s.  I saw him making it rock in a live setting be fantastic ten years past that.   And then he wasn't.  And now he is again. I loved seeing Henry Lee live. Here's an episode driven by a hope to share how great that act was without overselling it.  Because in the end, Henry Lee Summer had a handful of hits on the radio. Nothing more than that - unless you saw him live. Then it makes more sense: the straining-to-be-loose studio albums that never quite were roughed up enough (other than the second major label release  - "I've Got Everything") as he chased the right mix of hanging on and totally in the groove. That balance was what he harnessed on stage.   So these are my stories of discovery and the way one musician nothing much to most music fans, found a way to mean something more where he was and when he could.  Maybe this one is a little more personal than usual. I'm OK with that. I hope you are too. Enjoy the listen.   SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts Read Rob's current and archived writing at rockforwardmusic.com website: rockpopandroll.com EMAIL: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com

Donnie has been living the life for many years now, playing a few shows a year along the Rust Belt, putting out an album or two here and there, and enjoying the spoils of his labor. With this episode, we're cranking the power pop sound. A lot of bands fit this genre so the episode is a teaser – a primer if you will. Not everything that ever happened, but a taste of that sound. Some history, some not-so-talked about bands, and the roar of guitars bashing, sugared harmonies, and cracking drums.  We dive into some rocking rabbit holes to talk about bands and artists, and hear throwbacks to the sounds of many, including Marshall Crenshaw, Rockpile, Phil Seymour, and Donnie Iris. Cheap Trick may be the biggest of the genre, still doing their thing, playing "Surrender" and their great catalog live. The Raspberries had “Go All The Way” and are widely thought of as early power pop heroes.  Matthew Sweet did the sound better than almost anyone in the 90s.  It is a sound that I still love.  So let's go.  Turn it up. Alejandro Villanueva and Cam Heyward got into a little tussle yesterday at practice, but it was nothing compared to a skirmish at Three Rivers about twenty years ago - Tim Benz and Mike Prisuta remember a fight involving stools and Ernie Holmes. Comedians Collin Chamberlin and Ray Zawodni stop by to promote their showcase Pittsburgh's Most Wanted, happening tonight at the IMPROV.

This week we pay respects once again to the great music city of Cleveland with a local legend two-fer.  First up is keyboardist and songwriter Mark Avsec. Mark's first big break was when he joined Wild Cherry ("Play That Funky Music") in the mid-70s before then jumping to Jonah's new band Breathless for two excellent albums in the latter part of the decade. From there he forged what would be the defining musical relationship of his life when he and Donnie Iris joined forces for a run that continues to this day. He even wrote Donnie's biggist hit "Aah Leah" which reached #29 in 1980. A legal issue relating to Aah Leah inspired Mark to go to law school. He's now a copyright lawyer in Cleveland and still gigs with Donnie whenever possible.  Jonah started out in one of Cleveland's biggest draws of the early 70s, The Michael Stanley Band. He eventually wanted to try his hand running his own band and performing his own material when he went on to form Breathless and released two great albums. Unfortunately, Breathless never quite broke to a mass audience (despite opening for Kiss). Since the early 80s, Jonah has continued to record solo albums that rock most excellently. Though he may have retired to LA, he released another excellent solo album this year with Nusic.  Enjoy this conversation with a couple guys that have seen a lot and done a lot and have the scars (and killer songs) to prove it.  http://www.jonah.com.co/

Wes Bertrand and I continue our series based on Nathaniel Branden's book, Six Pillars of Self-Esteem. Today's show includes a discussion based on the sixth pillar, the Practice of Living With Integrity. Do your ideals, convictions, standards, beliefs and behavior line up? Do most people know what their ideals, convictions, standards and beliefs are? The root of self-esteem is not in accomplishment or output, but in our practices. However in school, we are only our output. WORDS AND BEHAVIORS MATCH “Integrity is the integration of ideals, convictions, standards, beliefs—and behavior. When our behavior is congruent with our professed values, when ideals and practice match, we have integrity. If they don't, we lose face in out own eyes." SUPERIORS AND AUTHORITY FIGURES untrustworthy because of incongruence Being an adult with an inconsistent boss was stressful enough "ONLY I WILL KNOW..." -dispel the idea that only the judgment of others counts -TRUTH: only mine counts when it comes to self-esteem LIVING WITH GUILT (original sin is anti-self esteem) 1. face and accept full reality, without disowning or avoidance 2. seek to understand why we did what we did 3. acknowledge to others the harm we've done, convey understanding of consequences 4. take restorative action 5. firmly commit to behaving differently in the future SELF ESTEEM isn't taught but IRRATIONAL STANDARDS ARE -religious teachings that damn pleasure, state, culture, society courage to challenge deepest assumptions of "good" -teaming living consciously with need for integrity to examine values we were taught -Practice of Integrity has inconsistencies in our lives explore this! why? -challenge: high personal standards while feeling like we're living in a moral sewer, the feeling of a lonely and heroic undertaking PRINCIPLE OF RECIPROCAL CAUSATION behaviors that generate SE are also expressions of SE practice of pillars genesprates a need for them, not work anymore (exercise or nutrition) THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF-ESTEEM 1. The Practice of Living Consciously 2. The Practice of Self-Acceptance 3. The Practice of Self-Responsibility 4. The Practice of Self-Assertiveness 5. The Practice of Living Purposefully 6. The Practice of Personal Integrity Questions to answer in this series: what is self-esteem? why is it important? what can we do to raise self-esteem? what role do others play in our self-esteem? The steps we'll try to follow for each pillar: -identify and define -what are the obstacles -personal stories, struggles -how to overcome them Bumper Music: The Who - "Who Are You" Donnie Iris - "Ahh Leah" Free - "All Right Now" Look Closer: Complete Liberty Podcast http://completeliberty.com/ NathanielBranden.com http://www.nathanielbranden.com/ An Introduction to Nonviolent Communication http://happinesscounseling.com/NVC_Intro.pdf Happiness Counseling Resource Page http://happinesscounseling.com/happiness-resources/ The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem (pdf) http://experiencelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/70-the-six-pillars-of-self-esteem.pdf

Donnie Iris - Ah! Leah! Yes, it's totally cheesy, but whenever I hear it, it sends me back to 1981, when I finally moved back to the states from Guam. I had just settled in a duplex in OB (That's Ocean Beach, and I still call it that. I also have an OB decal on my car window to this day.), and I was in radio heaven. After four years living in a place that had one decent radio station, and one so-so backup, I had plenty of choice. There were a few good stations in San Diego, and if I tweaked my antenna just right, I could occasionally pull in KROQ or KLOS from the LA area. I'm relatively certain this song got airplay on those stations, as well as those that played Top 40 songs. A little factoid about the song: Donnie Iris, who can't stop his burning desire for Leah, was a member of the funk-rock band Wild Cherry. Remember Play That Funky Music, White Boy? He was also a member of The Jaggerz, and wrote a hit song for them, The Rapper. Donnie is still around, too, and performs with Donnie Iris and The Cruisers, mostly near his home in western Pennsylvania.
