In Episode 5, Jess talks to that dynamic duo, John Chamberlin and Rachael Rennebeck — founders of YaJagoff Media You've seen — or heard them — as the zip around the 412 and beyond. Now, they're hosting their own radio show on Q92.9-FM, “YaJagoff on Q." What's behind their partnership? How did they get started? Listen in!
Rachael Rennebeck & John Chamberlin join Rick to talk about the Turkey Trot Event taking place on Thanksgiving morning.
The stereotypical influencer is someone who has a topic, industry or talent. They create content around that and create an audience to build a platform. If they're lucky, they monetize it in a way that supports them. If they're real lucky they become famous and sign entertainment deals and such to spin off into more traditional show business or media roles. But there are different paths for influencers. John Chamberlin started a blog in Pittsburgh about 10 years ago. The original intent was to give local businesses and events a pathway to reach audiences in the Three Rivers region. But with the stories and news, events and promotions that the mainstream media outlets often passed on. The website and blog was called YaJagoff.com. Accompanying social media channels like Facebook and Twitter helped establish the site and John as an influencer. Eventually, he added a podcast. That helped him see more opportunities to do live video and audio episodes at local businesses. As things grew, Rachael Rennebeck joined John as a partner in YaJagoff Media. The business grew into more than just a typical influencer platform. They now do PR, marketing and event consulting. And work with companies beyond the geographic confines of Western Pennsylvania. I asked John and Rachael to come on the show and tell us how they built YaJagoff Media, what types of content and channels work for local content, how the local media intertwines with their efforts and a lot more. John has a great insight about listening to your audience in the middle of this discussion that alone is worth paying attention. They gave me, and now you, an interesting perspective on how else to become a successful influencer. Or influence platform. For those that don't know Pittsburgh well, YaJagoff is a regional term there that can be an insult, “You cut me off YaJagoff!” but it can also be a term of endearment. “How ya been, YaJagoff!” Pittsburgh has its own language to a degree. We get into that a bit in the conversation today as well. Today's episode is sponsored by Tagger. It is a complete influencer marketing solution. You can find out more for yourself at jason.online/tagger. We've been talking recently to Meredith Jacobson, an independent influencer marketing consultant who was on a past episode of the show, to tell you about how she uses Tagger with We are Boosters. For a long time, Scot has been waiting for an opportunity to point to a really effective partnership that matches his own personal preferences. This week, John Chamberlin and Rachael Rennebeck of YaJagoff Media come in to do just that. YaJagoff Media is best known for the podcast of the same name, but their show is just one component of the larger media and marketing company that they built. It's a full-time job from which they make their living. Rachael and John are very honest with Scot throughout the entire interview - including a discussion about how they had been arguing the entire day before coming into the studio - but they also explain how when it comes time to set their differences aside and get to work, they're some of the best in the business. Fair warning - this week's show is marked explicit because it's a little spicy. Not bad - it's like a 1.5 out of 5 on the podcast scale - but still, you might get in a bit of trouble if you work at an uptight place and bust out the speaker system.
This special episode was recorded live at the 2018 SETA conference in Mobile, Alabama.
John Chamberlin joins Tim to talk about something we may take for granted, that is until we need it. It’s the story behind those helicopters that swoop in to take critically injured or sick people to the hospital care needed to save their lives. John is a co-host at the popular Pittsburgh podcast called YaJagoff, and over the years has served as an emergency medical responder. He remains an active advocate for that community. In short, this episode is about hope that didn't exist before, all thanks to a wingless aircraft. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Some_Angels_Dont_Have_Wings.mp3 In this episode, we talk about how it wasn’t that long ago, that a health crisis too far away from a hospital meant a death sentence. But thanks to the deployment of helicopters nationwide, countless lives have been saved. In the process, this has changed the way we now think about our chances in some of the worst situations we can face in life. The term “Medical evacuation” is often shortened to medevac, which is a term used to describe the transport and care provided to patients en route to a hospital or care center. The term is rooted in military terminology when describing moving wounded soldiers away from the battlefield. There are two kinds of vehicles used in medevac situations. Ambulances and aircraft. Air medical services have a very long tradition, rooted in battlefield deployments. In 1926, the U.S. Army Air Corps used a converted airplane to get patients from Nicaragua to an Army hospital in Panama 150 miles away. Planes were used to get wounded soldiers from one hospital to another in World War II. Helicopters made their medical debut during the Korean War in the 1950s. That was because the roads weren’t usable in Korea, so the military decided to use helicopters for the rapid and gentle evacuation of troops to field surgical units. Do you remember the TV show MASH? Over 22,000 troops were evacuated by helicopter during that war. In Vietnam, helicopters played a major role in the movement of wounded troops. Over 800,000 troops were evacuated from the field by helicopter. The advantages of helicopters are that they are quick, they could land and take off from almost anywhere, and medical personnel could start working on patients while in flight. By 1970, more and more military medical helicopter pilots had been discharged and returned to civilian life, often working in law enforcement or as first responders. Their influence helped lead to the creation of the Military Assistance to Safety & Traffic (MAST) program. That served as the catalyst for civilian programs. In 1972, St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver became the first to have a civilian, hospital-based medical helicopter service in place. By 1980, the country had roughly 32 helicopter emergency medical service programs in operation, transporting over 17,000 patients a year. By 1990, those numbers grew to 174 services that transported 160,000 patients a year. In 2000, 231 services flew over 203,000 patients each year. Today, there are over 500,000 medical transports by air each year. Facts An average response time to the scene of a trauma is about 10 minutes. There are 9% fewer wound infections. A major reduction in the number of deaths during transport to the hospital. Head injury mortality has been reduced by 15%. How do you learn and grow? By getting your hands dirty and making mistakes. That's how John Chamberlin established the persona for the YaJagoff brand. When he teased a blog post on Sandusky, a number of readers reacted with frustration. They let him know that they followed YaJagoff to get away from the heavy news and laugh at bad parking and funny headlines. John was smart enough to listen to his audience and shift gears. He wrote a new blog post and reached out personally to each follower who had expressed concern.John sites this incident as a milestone in the persona of the brand, and since Rachael Rennebeck joined YaJagoff Media last year, the pair has continued to leverage levity and avoid the obvious questions. They have created unforgettable marketing campaigns for nonprofits, including a Willy Wonka parody starring Tyler Kennedy for Junior Achievement and JuJu Smith-Schuster's JuJu Claus for the Homeless Children's Education Fund. They also co-host the YaJagoff podcast to promote the cool things going on in Pittsburgh. Above all, Rachael and John know how to have fun—and not be Jagoffs! In part two, John and Rachael talk monetization, explaining how long it took the brand to start earning money through sponsorships. Marketing hasn't changed, but the medium has.Social media affords us the opportunity to reach a much wider audience, but you HAVE to flex your relationship-building muscles to make it work.John Chamberlin built the YaJagoff brand by accident. After losing a job as VP of Marketing, he turned his attention to mastering social media. Inspired by a Port Authority bus driver who refused to pull over and let traffic by, John started the YaJagoff blog to ‘call out the Jagoffs that make the rest of us look bad.' He leveraged Twitter and Facebook to gain traction, and the blog's popularity grew. John continued to branch out, adding videos of interesting Pittsburghers and finally launching the podcast.John had collaborated with Rachael Rennebeck on projects for Markowitz Communications and then reconnected through her work with Total Sports Enterprises, a sponsor of the YaJagoff podcast. They officially joined forces as YaJagoff Media in 2017, and together they create memorable digital content for clients and co-host the podcast, which just celebrated its 100th episode. In part one, John and Rachael share their best memories from the first 100 episodes. They discuss how they have taken the show on the road, most recently through the Fireplace Tour. Rob, Chachi, and Sorg are joined by John Chamberlin of Yajagoff.com to tell us about the site and some of the charity they're doing over there. We ask ourselves what's next if the Mac Pros disappear, the Red Box price hikes, revisit the final fall of Zediva, Street View for parks bringing us to Wall-E, and we all agree with Justin Bieber (about stupid streaming laws), propose our new law writing service, and much more. Join the AwesomeCast on Twitter, Facebook and be sure to follow us on iTunes in both video and audio formats, as well as YouTube, Boxee, Roku, and Blip.tv! As always, you can chime in with news, thoughts, or comments at Contact@AwesomeCast.com or 724-25-A-CAST.
Welcome to the show. John Chamberlin interviews Dr. Robert Coleman, RN Geoffrey Patty, and Dr. Sahil Parikh on STEMI.
