Here's the latest CPG news happening right now on April 3rd, 2025 including Trump Tariffs Goes Into Effect, Huge Series A with Lucky Energy, Acquisitions Galore with Lesser Evil and Mela, and More Investment ActionOn April 2nd, (yesterday) Trump has announced reciprocal tariffs on essentially all goods, unless otherwise noted. Some details will emerge on what is exempt. For food and beverage people, this will deeply impact cost of goods sold for bottles, caps, labels, cans, and just about every type of packaging that is manufactured outside of the United States, typically in Asia. Also, companies sourcing raw materials and ingredients will be subject to tariffs. This will undoubtedly affect brands and their margins, forcing them to raise their wholesale pricing to retailers and distributors. And ultimately will affect the everyday consumer, paying more for goods, even more than the inflationary costs right now. We will watch this closely, but our opinion is this will disrupt the market, cause margin compression, and force manufacturers to re-think how they source their product.Lucky Energy, a simpler, better-for-you energy drink, announced today that it has successfully closed a $14.2 million oversubscribed Series A1 round, bringing its total funding to over $40 million. The round is led by Maveron, with backing from DMG Ventures, Second Sight Ventures, and existing investors: Imaginary Ventures, Brand Foundry Ventures, Sapphire Ventures, and Sugar Capital. The capital secured will fuel the brand's growth, enabling it to accelerate distribution, introduce new products, support strategic partnerships, and recruit in key business areas. Additionally, the company welcomed Dan Ginsberg, former Chief Executive Officer of Red Bull NA and CEO of Dermalogica®, to its Board of Directors.Lucky Energy has experienced explosive growth, entering 10,000 new doors with plans to expand to an additional 15,000 before the end of the year. The brand has also surpassed 400,000 followers across its social channels. The product is designed for individuals seeking to enhance performance with a natural, functional drink. It is currently available in six flavors: Son of a Peach, Orange Drizzle, Red Ryder Punch, OG Luck, Tropical Thrill, and Bodacious Berry. It has zero sugar and zero calories, ensuring a healthier choice for consumers. Nixie, the better for your sparkling water and now has a soda line that debuted in 2024, has secured $27M in fresh funding to help expand their product nationwide. Wet hydration has also raised $4.5M and brought on the former EVP from CelsiusHershey has agreed to buy the organic popcorn giant LesserEvil for about $750 million, a figure that could increase if the brand meets certain performance benchmarks, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing anonymous sources. The deal accelerates Hershey's expansion into salty snacks, and aligns with a broader rush by food giants to snap up smaller, more nimble competitors to reach new customers.Last but not least, Mela has been acquired by the beverage company Calypso. Which is under the umbrella company King Juice Holdings - a platform company backed by Mason Wells - a $2B PE firm out of Milwaukee that owns businesses across the CPG value chain
We're back in Blaviken, bitches! This week, we return to the tale that launched our podcast as we take on the graphic novel adaptation of “A Lesser Evil.” Can such a complex and morally murky Witcher story effectively make the leap to comics? Does this latest take on Renfri hold its own against the ones we've already seen? Is Stregobor as obnoxious as we'd expect? And has Tim finally warmed up to headband Geralt?!? Art is admired, creative decisions are debated and many tears are shed—though they're mostly over this week's whiskey pairing. With two flavored Dough Ball Whiskeys before us, we must choose which of them is the lesser evil…and like Geralt, we barely survive the experience.

Most Americans eat cold bread. Ismail Salhi and Johanna Hartzheim are changing that dynamic one loaf at a time. Ismail and Johanna are the founders of Wildgrain, a subscription-based service that ships boxes of par-baked frozen sourdough, pastries and hand-cut pasta to customers across the country. The married couple and business partners came to the U.S. after years of living in Paris and wanted to give people access to the same warm loaves of artisanal breads, flaky croissants and chewy dinner rolls they ate daily in France. Wildgrain partners with local bakers across the U.S. to produce its products, which are made with no preservatives, no artificial flavors and no bleached flour. No thawing is required. Just a few minutes in the oven is all you need to make fresh, warm bread. Since Ismail and Johanna launched Wildgrain in 2020 at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has become one of the most successful food delivery companies in America generating $30 million in revenue last year and turning profitable. How did Wildgrain achieve its position and why does the company's trajectory continue to rise? The throughline has always been an extremely high level of customer service, according to Ismail, who we spoke with for an interview featured in this episode of Taste Radio. Show notes: 0:35: Ismail Salhi, Co-Founder, Wildgrain – Ismail talks about the growing number of artisanal bakeries in urban neighborhoods, including his own and why “the delicious window” makes all the difference when baking and buying bread. He also discusses he and Joanna's decision to launch Wildgrain after shutting down their previous business, how they convinced a tech investor to buy into their new concept, and why they shifted focus after originally planning to build a vertically integrated company. Ismail also explains why being obsessed with your existing customer base is key to a subscription-based model, how Wildgrain has created a network of suppliers that provide consistent quality (if not taste), how they kept customers happy when things went wrong with deliveries early in the company's development, and why customer service is embedded in Wildgrain's marketing strategy. Ismail also talks about how the company achieved profitability three years after its launch, mitigating a potential plateauing of its subscription model and why Wildgrain doesn't hire “until it's painful.” Brands in this episode: Wildgrain, RXBAR, David, Lesser Evil, AG1

9/20/24 - Pope Francis has been in the news this week for some disturbing comments that he made during a recent press conference. When asked how Catholics should determine whom to vote for in the upcoming election, the Pope responded: "One must choose the lesser evil. Which is the lesser evil? That lady or that gentleman? I don't know; each person must think and decide according to their own conscience." How is a Catholic to respond to such a statement when one candidate holds such extreme pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ beliefs that directly contradict what we believe? The choice here seems like an obvious one...

Jordan and Taylor talk about the Harris-Walz ticket and how we need to hold their feet to the fire to actually get anything done when in power. We fully admit that "voting blue, no matter who" is a cringy, dumb thing to advocate for. We want to push progressive policies, like Walz has and keep Trump out of office. The best way to do that is vote blue down ballot. Its not perfect, but its the hand we are being dealt in this moment.

Dates, consumed for millennia, are having a modern moment. But can the superfood maintain its momentum, particularly among mainstream consumers? And, while we're asking: has “superfood” lost its luster? Taste Radio's hosts have their say. We also sit down with MMA icon Quentin “Rampage” Jackson, who is a partner with upstart beverage brand F3 Energy. Show notes: 0:38: No ECL, Thank You. Don't Sit Next To Ray. A Plurality of Cacao. Sounds Fishy. – Mike trolls Ray about a recent soccer game, it's clear that Jacqui is the one to call in the event of an emergency, and an early-stage date snack brand sparks a discussion about how the fruit and other superfoods are marketed and sold. The hosts also munch on a new line of corn-based, onion-flavored, ring-shaped snacks (yes, you guessed it) and opine on better-for-you versions of legacy snacks, while Mike gets ceremonial about a new cacao drink and reveals a somewhat strange breakfast habit. 30:14: Quentin “Rampage” Jackson, Partner, F3 – MMA fans are undoubtedly familiar with the name “Rampage.” The sobriquet belongs to one of the sport's icons, Quentin Jackson, a former title holder in the UFC's light heavyweight division. Quentin is still active in the MMA community and currently aligned with the United Fight League, which was founded by entrepreneur Harrison Rogers in 2023. Harrison is also the founder of F3, a nascent brand of energy and mood-enhancing drinks, of which Quentin is a partner. Quentin spoke about his role with F3, why he urged Harrison not to get into the beverage industry and how he's using novel social platforms to promote the brand. He also addresses a touchy topic that almost landed Ray in hot water. Brands in this episode: F3 Energy, Straightaway Cocktails, Sibz, Joolies, Ora Cacao, Chia Smash, Lesser Evil, Funyuns, The Good Crisp, Doritos, Combos, Rivalz Snacks, Snacklins, Harken Sweets, Djablo Sauce, IQ Bar, Doosra, Fishwife, Ark Cocktails, Monster Energy

We have previously sampled several Ginger's Revenge offerings in their pure forms on FrancePants (MuteMath and Ginger's Revenge), POH (Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Appalachian Beer Tour), and Malty Little Beers (Alanis Morissette and Leftover Beers). Barry picked up his habit of eating an apple “from top to bottom” from the semi-autobiographical novel Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. We took an opportunity to plug Dry Wrought Cider in Gainesville, Florida! We also plugged the NC Pickle Festival in Mount Olive, North Carolina. Lory is a fan of U Talkin' U2 To Me?, the show that inspired us to start a podcast! We dove into an episode of “I Love Films” to discuss Lory's dad appearing as an extra in The Lesser Evil, an early film in the Adam Scott canon. Lory plugged Botanist and Barrel Cidery and Winery in Cedar Grove, North Carolina, which brews their ciders with foraged fruits. Up next… A Fever You Can't Sweat Out by Panic! When RIND Snacks debuted in 2018, founder and CEO Matt Weiss won plaudits for creating an innovative and eye-catching brand of upcycled fruit snacks. Six years later, the New York-based entrepreneur is being lauded for transforming RIND into a vertically integrated healthy snack platform. Industry acclaim is nice, but Matt will say that his primary focus is to create lasting value for his company, shareholders and consumers. Last month, RIND, which markets dried fruit snacks and fruit and nut mixes that are sold in retailers across the U.S., announced the acquisition of Small Batch Organics, a Vermont-based manufacturer of granola products. According to a press release about the deal, the combined companies will have a retail footprint that will include 12,000 locations and generate over $25 million in sales by the end of 2024. RIND's decision to acquire Small Batch Organics is rooted in Matt's mantra: “do something to drive ever-forward progress.” It's a statement of intent to which he frequently returned during our interview at Natural Products Expo West 2024, held in Anaheim from March 12-16, 2024. As part of our conversation, Matt explains why he wanted to develop RIND as a platform snack brand from the outset; how he attempts to maximize the value of outside capital; how the company used alt-retail channels, foodservice, and travel stores to drive cash flow; and why investing early in brand ethos and a polished product has consistently paid dividends. Show notes: 0:35: Matt Weiss, Founder & CEO, RIND Snacks — Taste Radio editor Ray Latif admires Matt's hoodie game, the decision to acquire Small Batch Organics and why financial resources are focused on innovation, staffing and “operational excellence.” He also explains with “Kill ‘Em With Rindness” is key to the company's sales strategy, the value of bootstrapping before raising outside capital, his belief in “the one thing that never goes out of style in business,” and how he discussed the plan to vertically integrate RIND with its investors.
