I want to talk a little bit more about Nicola Willis' tight budget - I haven't changed my position from yesterday and I'm impressed at how little she's giving herself to play with. But the truth is, it doesn't go far enough - at all. Because understand this - that $1.3 billion that she's given herself in her operating allowance is new spending. As in, take last year's budget and now increase it by $1.3 billion. For context, Nicola Willis spent more money last year than Grant Robertson ever did in any of his budgets - and now she's adding another $1.3 billion to it. Now I understand that this is conventional politics - budgets increase every year. The last time it didn't, the last time we had a zero budget where we didn't add any more money was Bill English's 2011 budget - because we'd had the earthquake. But what that tells you is it's possible to not increase the spending - and I would argue that is exactly what we should be doing at the moment. Because we are in big financial trouble as a country. We are running structural deficits - that means we are spending more every year than we make. If it was a household, we'd be talking about a family spending more than they earn and running up the difference on credit cards every year - but still deciding every year to spend more. That's what we're doing. I think we need to cut big things. Now, I don't want to be accused of being a racist, so I'm reluctant to say publicly that we should cut the Ministry for Māori Development or the Ministry for Pacific Peoples - but I am a woman, so I'm very happy to say we should cut the Ministry for Women. Why do we need it? Why do we need a Ministry for the Environment and also a Department of Conservation? I could go on. But if we don't get real and start running smaller budgets where we spend within our means, something will have to give. And the thing every commentator out there seems to want to cut is your pension - because it's very expensive to the country. Now if I had a choice, I'd keep the pension and cut out nonsense like ministries we don't need and stop spending more every year than we did the last. Like I said, I'm impressed. Nicola Willis is going further than I thought she would - but not far enough if we're actually going to fix the country's books. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode features an interview with Liz Carter, CMO at Reputatio, a company helping brands understand and improve their reputations. In this conversation, Liz discusses the differences between brand and reputation and the current challenges of building trust with today's consumers. She also shares her thoughts on experimentation within tight budgets.Key Takeaways:Brand is not synonymous with reputation, Your brand is who you aspire to be, while your reputation reflects how consumers perceive you based on their experiences. Bridging the gap is essential for success. When budgets are tight, think about how you can do small experiments and how you can best leverage them, but keep experimenting. With AI and misinformation, it is a challenging time to to build consumer trust in the marketplace, and brands should be paying special attention to how they are perceived by target audiences. Quote: In an environment where budgets are getting cut and things are being tightened or whatever, you know, you have to think about like, is now a time for experimenting with big dollars or is it time for little experiments and what can you get out of that? And so, I mean, again, it's a balancing act of knowing sort of what's happening in the market or in your business specifically at a given time and how and when to sort of look for those opportunities.Episode Timestamps: *(08:17) The Trust Tree: The difference between brand and reputation *(14:07) The Playbook: Bringing crazy ideas to your CFO *(34:41) The Dust Up: Alignment and clear expectations *(35:57) Quick Hits: Liz's quick hits Sponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com. Marketing your business on a budget? In this episode, Michael Herklots shares how he used the power of storytelling and personal branding to build his luxury cigar business from the ground up. Michael has worked in the Premium Cigar Industry since 1999. He served as Vice President of Nat Sherman International, responsible for creating and maintaining the company's portfolio of premium cigars, pipe tobaccos, and accessories. Most recently, he is the co-founder of Ferio Tego, which has been named the “Brand of the Year” by Cigar Dojo and “New Company of the Year” by Halfwheel. Michael is a Certified Master Tobacconist by Tobacconist University and a thoughtful business leader with 20 years of experience in specialty retail and wholesale luxury goods. The Power of Storytelling When Michael and his co-founder decided to launch a cigar company during COVID-19, there was no shortage of obstacles. Aside from the challenge of selling cigars during a respiratory pandemic, they also had limited capital. Without the budget to hire a marketing team or ad agency, they leaned on something more powerful: their story. Over and over again, they told the story of Ferio Tego, their backgrounds in the cigar industry, and their vision for the brand. Both Michael and his co-founder Brendon Scott had plenty of connections in the cigar world, but they took a unique approach to every conversation. Every time they met with a potential partner, they would lean into different aspects of their story. For instance, smaller companies were more likely to relate to their story of bootstrapping the business from the ground up, while larger companies wanted to see the data and volume. Innovate the Process, Not the Product In today's fast-paced world, many companies shift their marketing and add new products every week–but ultimately, that hurts your brand recognition and makes it harder for retailers to sell your products. The more consistent you stay, the greater the chance consumers will start to relate to and remember your brand. While the Ferio Tego brand is consistent, Michael is constantly innovating other aspects of the business. He and his co-founder have taken a unique approach in partnering with other cigar companies. They now have factories in multiple countries without the overhead of managing their own warehouses. Enjoy this episode with founder Michael Herklots… Soundbytes 17:46-18:30 “New businesses, we don't have a marketing budget, we don't have an advertising agency. We don't have four people who are building decks on what is Ferio Tego and what isn't Ferio Tego and creating all of those thoughtful pyramids. Who has time for that? We're fighting for our lives every day, trying to get another sale. And so what we lack in that sophisticated, deep infrastructure of brand, we have what a lot of those departments crave and try to create which is the absolute authentic story of time served and process and how we do things.” 19:20-19:37 “What they are trying to do is to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we have, just as a consequence of being a small startup, we're creating a brand that is authentic. What you see is what you get.” 27:09-27:37 “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently, so that you as a retailer, can tell the same story over and over to your consumers. The consumers can learn that story and share it with their peers, and by the time they learn it, they can catch back up with the brand, and we're still singing the same song. We've abandoned that in so many industries.” 54:04-54:50 “There are times when you look at something that just seems so overwhelming, whether it's something as small as playing a gig, or something as big as launching a company. And to get over the hump of it, I have to believe that the opportunity and the idea and the consideration–all of the work has been done for a reason. All those opportunities are lined up for a reason and therefore I have to have faith that this is meant to be.” Quotes “They're trying to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we, as a consequence of being a small startup, are creating a brand that is authentic.” “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently.” “It's become innovative to go back to building the brand.” “It's probably naive to think that it's possible to be everything to everyone. What I try to do is be something to everyone.” “I don't know anyone who would consider themselves an expert. Even the most famous, most successful are still practicing all the time.” “You have to live within what's authentic to you and let your audience find you.” Links mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Ferio Tego cigars: https://www.feriotego.com/ Connect with Michael on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelherklots/

The intricacies of nonprofit staffing with guest Patrick Gnehm, the CEO and founder of Talent Sync. Patrick speaks to the challenges nonprofits face in hiring staff while operating on tight budgets. With a focus on strategic growth, Patrick outlined the unique approach his firm takes to assist nonprofits in building their talent pipelines effectively. Patrick begins with pointing to aligning organizational needs with strategic outreach efforts, stating, "When you're looking at building a nonprofit pipeline, we need to think about defining our needs and strategically reaching out to potential candidates." He highlights the significance of engaging existing volunteers and promoting from within to foster a culture of growth and development within organizations. Patrick describes the often-overlooked aspect of succession planning within nonprofits, urging organizations to invest in their employees' professional development to mitigate the costly repercussions of high turnover rates. He says, "It's more affordable to invest resources in existing employees to help them grow and mature within the organization rather than constantly replacing departing staff members." The fast-paced conversation peeks into the evolving landscape of remote work and its implications for nonprofit staffing with Patrick discussing the merits of both in-person and remote work setups, acknowledging the diverse needs and preferences of nonprofit organizations.Watch on Video!Follow us on the Twitter: @Nonprofit_ShowSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show
With prices soaring to new heights, many of us can't help but reflect on what we're spending for food and contemplate ways to still make amazing food on an extremely tight budget. This isn't a new issue for humans and luckily we can look to our ancestors for inspiration. Watch on YouTube https://youtu.be/M0tScIESsyo According to the Wall Street Journal, it's been 30 years since food ate up this much of our income, and we see it every day in the grocery store, at restaurants, and even at the drive-thru. This is a problem I don't think is going away any time soon, but we still need to eat. But there is no need to compromise on taste, flavor, and enjoyment of food. You still can make amazing food on an extremely tight budget! Modern day cucina povera The Italian phrase, cucina povera, translates to "poor kitchen" and is a concept that isn't limited to Italians, rather it transcends cultures and time. It relies on using inexpensive ingredients, often pantry-stable ones, and not letting anything go to waste. Stale bread wouldn't be discarded, rather it would be used to make polpette di pane, or panzanella salad. Meals classified as cucina povera often include some type of legume and a grain; rarely will any meat fall into this category, unless it's the innards, also known as offal. These meals are ones that many Italian-American families make regularly, especially during Lent when many are fasting and abstaining from meat on Fridays, or the entire Lenten season. Some of the more well-known grain and legume meals include pasta fagioli, pasta e ceci, and pasta e lenticchie and while each differs slightly, they all have one thing in common: they're amazing meals that are budget-friendly. In this episode we discuss the problem at hand, talk through solutions, including buying in bulk (Costco), using leftovers in new ways, and some of our favorite budget-friendly meals. Taste tests are back Last year we recorded a few product taste tests on our main channel, and we've decided to bring them back, but in a different way. We'll use the end of each podcast episode to try a new food or drink and let you know what we think of them. In this episode, we're taste-testing a packaged Italian pastry similar to a cornetto, and one of my homemade zeppole di San Giuseppe. Listen to find out what we think! Our guest today, Clay Payne, is the head superintendent at Buffalo Dunes, a municipal course in Garden City, Kansas, which is in the midst of a six-year renovation project. Clay talks with Garrett about how he and his crew have made a relatively small amount of money go a long way. This episode of our Superintendent Series is brought to you by the Toro Company.

Renowned Republican House Speaker, Mike Johnson from Louisiana, has recently proposed a shrewd dualistic fiscal proposal targeted at maintaining governmental functions into the coming year. This plan is also keenly designed to stave off a 'yearend spending behemoth', as first reported by Fox News over the weekend. The innovative proposal outlines a phased approach to governmental funding, apportioning it into two distinct intervals ending on January 19th, and subsequently February 2nd. Insiders within the congressional scene confirm that a Tuesday assembly has been marked for a potential endorsement of this plan. Those who are advocating for this polished, two-stage short term funding model - referred to as a continuing resolution (CR), suggest that it imparts measured tension on the political heads. It's expected to induce the desired outcomes, yet maintaining a steady, piecemeal pace of progress. Fox News Digital appended to this by stating, 'Johnson's CR conveniently refrained from any added funds allocation to Israel or Ukraine, while it did manage to retain major provisions within the Farm Bill'. This embeds it as a necessity amongst other crucial legislations set to expire later this year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
