Why Do Jews Care About Money? with Rachel Grose

Bad Jew

Jews have a specific relationship with money that others tend to blow out of proportion. Some Jews go out of their way to make fun of this antisemitic trope by turning themselves into caricatures in hopes of revealing such lunacy with satire. However, the Torah has so many laws around how we handle money that it must be spotlighted!  Rachel Grose, the executive director of the Jewish Free Loan Association knows a thing or two about cash from the Jewish perspective. Loaning in itself is a tricky bundle of laws to navigate, especially when it comes to the Jewish world. Grose discusses the enticing world of money with Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, in an effort to destigmatize the misunderstanding and highlight what makes the Jewish community so successful. 00:00 Introduction 05:12 Principles of society 09:01 Zero-interest loans 11:33 Circulation in Jewish communities 16:11 History of Jews and money 20:03 Case study of Jewish Free Loan Association 23:53 Jewish privilege and challenges 24:44 Repaying loans 29:20 Jewish loans help communities grow and thrive About Rachel Grose: Rachel Grose grew up in a Washington D.C. suburb, surrounded by politics but uninterested in campaigns or running for office. Her passion for creating change began in high school when she became involved with Amnesty International, where she connected deeply with the stories of people impacted by systemic issues. After earning a BFA in art, Rachel discovered an MBA program focused on nonprofit management, which launched her career in the nonprofit sector. For the past 21 years, she has served as the Executive Director of the Jewish Free Loan Association (JFLA), a financial nonprofit that provides zero-interest, no-fee loans to residents of Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. Rachel takes pride in JFLA's mission to help individuals manage life's unexpected challenges without turning to high-interest credit cards or predatory loans. Under her leadership, the organization supports clients through every stage of life, offering loans for post-secondary education, small businesses, medical needs, fertility treatments, and funeral expenses, among others, while maintaining a remarkable 99% repayment rate. Despite the challenges of being a woman leader in one of the largest cities in America, Rachel remains committed to equitable lending and the impactful cycle of “paying it forward.” Beyond her professional achievements, Rachel cherishes warm memories of summers spent in Ocean City, Maryland with her extended family. Days on the beach—collecting shells, jumping in the waves, and sharing snacks under umbrellas with her grandmother—left a lasting impression on her heart. These personal experiences fuel her drive to build a meaningful career while balancing family life. Rachel is often asked, “How do you do it all?” Her response is evident in her decades-long dedication to fostering financial empowerment and community impact through JFLA. I want what you're having. The Melbourne Storm that is. Penrith Panthers too. Regardless of the result in next week's NRL final, which in all likelihood will be a barnburner versus Penrith, we've been shown that the idea of a rebuilding phase in high end professional sport is a tired and broken concept. The best teams in the world don't spend a couple of seasons rebuilding. They do it on the run. They make difficult selection calls, they understand why moving people on before their talent drops off a cliff, maybe brutal, but in the wider and more important picture is essential. No hanging onto players out of sentiment. Knowing how to handle talent transition. Repaying long-time hardworking juniors when they have served their apprenticeship, not waiting until the elder statesmen is dribbling into a cup. This starts at the top. Consistency at a boardroom level with coaching appointments. Almost the antithesis of playing staff, coaches and their philosophies shouldn't be discarded on a whim, their positions need longevity and ultimate trust. Their ability to identify talent and work it into the team from a junior level needs time to breathe. Faith in their process from the head office needs solidity. The Panthers, regardless of tonight's result as they attempt to make a liquid dorsal delicacy out of Cronulla, has shown the importance of consistency of coaching values and growth, which is essential for a team to rebuild as they go. It's the same for one of the great NRL dynasties, the Melbourne Storm. NRL teams desire for sugar hits will invariably pay poor dividends, whereas trust in the turtle over the hare has shown to be the best way to secure long term club success. Andrew Webster's Warriors were rotten this season, hopefully lessons around knowing when to hold senior players or fold them, will be taken on board and the Wahs too can build a club in the image of the Storm or the Panthers. Imagine if the Penrose fish heads had shown that required faith in Ivan Cleary all those years ago. Imagine. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” - Romans 6:6Being born again in Christ changes a person. We're given a new nature that fights against our old, corrupt nature. Sometimes, the evidence of this is in the area of finances. Straight ahead—a journey to faithful stewardship.Bobby's TestimonyIt's always a great privilege to connect with people, answer their financial questions, and offer help whenever possible. Recently, we spoke with Bobby from Nebraska, whose story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith and determination.Bobby was in a tough spot. He had accumulated significant debt, including a car repossession, delinquent medical and credit card debt, and unpaid overdraft loans sent to collections. But despite his financial struggles, Bobby was committed to turning his life around. When asked if anything had changed in his life since accumulating that debt, Bobby shared his story. In his own words, Bobby explained, “Back then, I was big into partying and addicted to drugs. I sold drugs and went to prison for it. Well, now I'm clean and sober. I don't do any of that anymore. I actually have money in my bank account. September 10th, 2021, was the biggest start of it. That's when I gave my life to Jesus Christ. And now I'm just trying to get everything back in line and where it needs to be.”Hearing how Bobby's life has changed since inviting Christ in as his Savior was truly inspiring. His commitment to sobriety and financial stewardship is a powerful example of God's redemptive power.Steps Toward Financial FreedomA few weeks ago, we advised Bobby to take several steps to get his finances in order. First, we recommended that he pull copies of his credit reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion to identify all his debts. Then, we suggested he contact Christian Credit Counselors to help manage his credit card debt through a debt management plan, which would consolidate his payments and help him pay off his debt faster. We also offered to connect Bobby with one of our Certified Christian Financial Counselors (CertCFC) at no charge. This counselor would work with him one-on-one to develop a budget and create a plan for paying off his old debts. Finally, we took a moment to pray with Bobby, thanking God for His miraculous intervention and the gift of eternal life that Bobby had received.Biblical Principles Guiding Bobby's TransformationBobby's journey highlights several biblical principles that are now guiding his life:The Body as a Temple: Bobby's decision to give up drugs aligns with 1 Corinthians 6:19, which reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Recognizing that we are not our own but belong to God is a powerful motivator for making healthy choices.Humility: Bobby's willingness to seek help, even on a public platform, reflects the humility described in Proverbs 22:4: “The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.”Honesty: Bobby's commitment to owning up to his debt is a reflection of the biblical principle of honesty. Exodus 20:16 and Colossians 3:9 teach us the importance of living truthfully, especially as followers of Christ.Repaying Debts: The Bible emphasizes the importance of repaying what we owe. Psalm 37:21 says, “The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives.” Bobby's desire to pay off his debt is a step toward fulfilling this principle.Stewardship: Perhaps the most significant principle guiding Bobby now is stewardship. He wants to manage his finances faithfully, in line with 1 Corinthians 4:2: “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”We were grateful to help Bobby on his journey to faithful stewardship, and we want to extend that same help to you. If you're struggling with your finances, need help creating a budget, or want to develop a plan to pay down debt and start saving, please reach out to us. We're here to help you take the next step toward financial freedom and faithful stewardship.Bobby's story is a powerful reminder that with God's help, it's never too late to turn your life around and get back on track. If you're ready to take that step, we're here to walk alongside you.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 70 and have a lot saved in my retirement accounts. No. Today is a sacred day to honor those who not only laid down their lives to preserve our freedoms, liberties, and way of life but, in many cases, gave their life to protect those serving beside them. Their sacrifice is a debt we will never be able to repay, but “we, the people,” should still try. ORN Dave Weiss show notes 11/8/22 FlatEarthDave.com Flat earthers don't believe in a flat disc floating in space. It's a strawman. Searching on Google won't uncover the truth about the non-heliocentric world. Google hides truthful videos. Look at video: A Stranger Guide To Earth 21 Questions. Virtual summit True Earth Mount Meru coming on Friday, Saturday Nov. 11/12. Sign up at temms.live or FlatEarthDave.com. Use FEDAVE50 $50 off discount code. Many big names. Can rewatch it anytime. Mount Meru Is the virtual center of the earth. Kelly Brogan is almost a flat earther. Has done interviews with Dave Weiss. Joe Rogan said "there's no way you can convince me we went to the moon.” Then interviewed Neil DeGrasse Tyson, said maybe we did go. Got his contract with Spotify. He sold out. NASA picture of the LEM -Lunar Excursion Module. It looks ludicrous. Are they laughing at us? How can Dave prove NASA's photos are CGI? They don't say they are photos. Admits their photos are fake, made in Photoshop. Blue Origin video of weightlessness in space is all trickery and multiple edits. Why can't you take a picture of the edge of the flat earth? We're in a pond and not allowed to cross 60 degrees south. Can't have air pressure without a container. How high is the firmament? About 73 miles. NASA not allowed to explore higher. Books about the outer land: The Iron Republic by C.J. Austin, and The Navigator Who Crossed the Ice Wall. The universe is a complex of ponds with a source energy. See video. It's Star Wars with The Force here on a physical plane. The ponds are separated by multiples of miles, not light-years. $35 trillion of US debt. Interest per year is $1.5 trillion. Will be worse with rising interest rates now. Repaying $100,000 every year would require 28,000 years to pay off. How can a flat earth have a lunar eclipse? See Dave's video of the sun and moon circling around. Stars outrun the sun which outruns the moon. Lunar eclipse is not the earth blocking the moon. Brightness on earth from moonlight means the moon is not a solid object. The moon is evenly lit, which means it is its own light source. But NASA says moon is 250,000 miles away. Selenelion eclipses where people have seen both the moon and the sun at the same time, with both above the horizon. Heliocentric model can't explain it. Earth is traveling 4.5 billion miles a year, stars have their own orbits. Yet a night sky photo from the same spot year to year will line up perfectly. Also same year after year. Impossible for a supercomputer to predict where 3 bodies will be when each is orbiting. NASA won't appear to debate heliocentric model with earthcentric model believers. What if nuclear bombs weren't real? If their radiation isn't real? They want us stuck in the prison of the matrix. Don't want us to know we are the beneficiaries of the creation. No one was allowed to report on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki “nuclear” bombing. Dave tears apart the videos of Elon Musk's space flight and NASA videos. Vertical landings are impossible. Dave shows with a video why seasons change and days shorten. See Dave's Flat Earth Sun Moon & Zodiac app for $3, plus more playlists. Use FriendFinder to find other flat earthers. $11/year subscription or a referral program using DITRH. How deep is flat earth? The Great Bore Hole in Russia, deepest hole ever dug, at 7 miles hit something impenetrable they couldn't get through. Is the core of earth really molten lava? The only people who have control of you are in your imagination. They are not allowed to take your free will. But programming us with fear and lack. Globers say there is a horizon but you can't see it because of refraction.
