The Empathy Edge
Jen Marr: Own the Awkward to be a Better Leader

The Empathy Edge

Technology has always been a double-edged sword. As the workplace and culture shift, we as humans are seeing more collaboration, access, and the ability to communicate across borders. But, it's also leading us to more stress, anxiety, depression, and social isolation. Those dopamine hits are no joke! This all impacts how we need leaders to show up and lead. We have to upskill our leaders for more connection, conversation, and collaboration. AI will be taking over a lot of the drudgery, so leadership now looks different from what it did 20 or 30 years ago. And for some leaders, there is a big skill gap between intent and impact. Something my guest today calls the Awkward Zone as she helps leaders to Own the Awkward.Today, Jen Marr shares the three forces behind our fundamental workplace shifts and how this has changed the role of leaders. She talks about that Awkward Zone and how to navigate through it. She shares the Barbell concept, necessary to build up healthy, productive employees. We have an interesting discussion about time - how leaders track it, spend it, and can find more ways to spend it on their people rather than on useless tasks. And Jen shares what may finally shake us up from the unhealthy ways tech has taken over our lives at the cost of real connection, and what that flashpoint might be for us. To access the episode transcript, go to www.TheEmpathyEdge.com, search by episode title.Listen in for…The three major trends that are fundamentally shifting the workplace. How to foster a healthy workplace with operational empathy and actionable steps. Why actions, not nouns, frame lasting change so we can better handle our emotions. How time tracking can help you be a more supportive leader. "The awkward zone is that gap between our intent and our impact. Within that is a whole series of different habits, mindsets, and behaviors that get in our way." — Jen MarrAbout Jen Marr, Founder & CEO, Showing Up LLCJen Marr helps leaders Own the Awkward - the high-stakes moments that decide whether people stay or stray. As founder of Showing Up LLC, she built the first research-driven framework that turns relational skills into repeatable business practice. More than 150 certified facilitators now deploy her process across Fortune 50 tech, major-league sports, healthcare systems, and even the White House Leadership Program. Her programs replace awkward and nuanced relational issues with clear, confident skills and conversation frameworks. In this world, evil men and seducers are waxing worse and worse. God is searching for a people who will pay the price in their own personal lives to please Him. Only after we are willing to confess our sin can we call out to God in prayer. The first request God desires us to make is for His will to be done. The Lord is still working on us. He is opposed to the wickedness of our world, but it is in our hearts and hands that God will first do His work.

My guest for this episode, Dr Jody Carrington, a clinical psychologist, speaker, and author based in Alberta, Canada, has spent most of her career working with children and families who have experienced trauma, and has learned that kids can only be as okay as the adults in their lives are okay. The result of her insights is the wonderful book Kids These Days: A Game Plan for (Re)Connecting With Those We Teach, Lead & Love. Jody offers powerfully grounded insights and strategies for parents, caregivers, and teachers to connect with and show up for our kids and each other. Things You'll Learn from This Episode: Why it's so important that kids have meaningful connections with adults in their lives, including (and perhaps especially) teachers The importance of showing emotional regulation to kids (and why emotional regulation can't be learned without dysregulation) What is a “light up moment” How labels are often relied upon in schools to provide context but miss the actual story Jody's answer to the question: “Is it ever too late” with older kids who may have experienced trauma or have really tricky conduct Why and how our real power comes from connecting and supporting each other Learn more about your ad choices. Stepping through the doors of New Beginnings, single mothers find more than just shelter—they discover family. Case Manager Ruth Westfall shares her passionate journey of guiding these women from survival mode to stability through a comprehensive five-year program designed to break cycles of generational poverty."Every single girl is a success," Ruth explains, describing how each resident receives God's Word regardless of how long they stay. With daily devotions, weekly church attendance, and constant conversations about grace and forgiveness, faith forms the foundation of a program that transforms lives through six essential pillars: faith, parenting skills, education, vocation, personal development, and social skills. The challenges are immense. Most residents arrive having never experienced trustworthy relationships, sleeping on floors with cockroaches crawling over them while pregnant, and developing survival mechanisms that initially make building trust difficult. Yet through patience, structure, and genuine love, Ruth and her team help these women recalibrate their lives. "These things that they have grown up with for years don't take just days," she notes. "It's years to break those cycles."Success stories abound—graduates finding well-paying careers in IT, welding, and cybersecurity. But perhaps the most touching transformation is when a resident who initially responds with skepticism to expressions of love eventually whispers back "I love you too." These relationships continue even after residents leave, providing the supportive family many never had.New Beginnings now hopes to expand their impact through their Heart Campaign, raising funds for a new facility that will allow them to serve mothers with multiple children. Christian believers will be tempted to sin. How are we to understand what goes on in temptation? Where is God when we are tempted? How do we lay hold of the resources to resist and come through these times of agony? These and other crucial questions are considered in this week's episode.   Featured Resources: – 'Lead Us Not Into Temptation', Sinclair B. During this Women's History Month and anytime, her job as Associate Brand Manager for Aflac (headquartered in Columbus GA) gives her the opportunity to put women in the spotlight, like when she went to the NCAA women's Final Four last year, among some big names. We also talk on this episode about transitioning from being only to runner to strength training...dealing with the pressures of being a strong woman on the job and in the gym...and how faith brought her out of a path of panic. After a update on the growth of women's sports, (6:20) Madison Montgomery joins in to talk about her Final Four experience, why it's important to shine the light on female athletes, and her advice for young women. (17:00) Becoming "too thin" a year ago, Madison has since lifted weights more and hired a nutrition coach. You may be surprised what she's learned about workouts and especially food (and more of it). She also describes the "athlete camp" she recently attended. (27:18) In her mid 20s and busy juggling school and jobs and being fit...she started having panic attacks which led to depression and thoughts of suicide. She shares her story to help other women who may think they need to portray having it all together. (37:08) And Madison credits getting through dark times to the Lord's grace. She talks about starting her day early through quiet time with God. And she wants to experience as much as she can in life - which recently has helped her see women's sports in a different light. I close us out in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. For more info and all past episodes, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.

Spurgeon himself introduces this sermon with a few words of thanksgiving, and tells us, with characteristic desire, “I thought the best way in which I could express my thankfulness would be to preach Jesus Christ again, and set him forth in a sermon in which the simple gospel should be made as clear as a child's alphabet.” With this in mind, he turns to the bronze serpent which Moses lifted up in the wilderness, and under five simple headings seeks not only to set forth Christ Jesus as the object of faith, urging him upon sinners, but also to encourage those who know Christ to hold him up themselves. The classic gospel notes of Spurgeon's ministry ring out again in this sermon, and remind us of his desire to remain always close to the cross in all his preaching. What, then, could be more suitable on such a significant occasion than to go back to the old theme and speak once more of the Son of God's love and the Saviour of sinners? Even if your strength is abated, and your grace is weakened, through your own sin — yet, being true saving grace, it shall never be annihilated. For it is a new creation; and nothing created by God, can be annihilated by us. Man is created by God; he may be killed by man; but he cannot be annihilated and brought to nothing. The tree and wood may be burnt to ashes, but it cannot be annihilated and brought to nothing, for it is part of the creation. Now, your grace was created by God also, if it is true, even though it is small. And therefore, though it may be weakened by your sin, it cannot be annihilated and brought to nothing.
