During this Women's History Month and anytime, her job as Associate Brand Manager for Aflac (headquartered in Columbus GA) gives her the opportunity to put women in the spotlight, like when she went to the NCAA women's Final Four last year, among some big names. We also talk on this episode about transitioning from being only to runner to strength training...dealing with the pressures of being a strong woman on the job and in the gym...and how faith brought her out of a path of panic. After a update on the growth of women's sports, (6:20) Madison Montgomery joins in to talk about her Final Four experience, why it's important to shine the light on female athletes, and her advice for young women. (17:00) Becoming "too thin" a year ago, Madison has since lifted weights more and hired a nutrition coach. You may be surprised what she's learned about workouts and especially food (and more of it). She also describes the "athlete camp" she recently attended. (27:18) In her mid 20s and busy juggling school and jobs and being fit...she started having panic attacks which led to depression and thoughts of suicide. She shares her story to help other women who may think they need to portray having it all together. (37:08) And Madison credits getting through dark times to the Lord's grace. She talks about starting her day early through quiet time with God. And she wants to experience as much as she can in life - which recently has helped her see women's sports in a different light. Por su parte, Ines habla sobre cómo los hispanos desconfían del seguro y de su valor, (lo que reciben a cambio de lo que pagan) y cómo pueden superar esa incertidumbre. In this insightful episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, host Chris Schembra welcomes Mitch Warner, Managing Partner at The Arbinger Institute and co-author of Leadership and Self-Deception. Mitch guides us through the core principles of Arbinger's groundbreaking work, exploring the central idea of self-deception—a psychological barrier that prevents individuals from seeing others clearly and, ultimately, impedes personal and organizational growth.Mitch introduces the concept of self-deception as the tendency to see ourselves inaccurately, often with a biased or distorted lens, which leads us to misjudge others as obstacles or tools rather than as people with legitimate needs and perspectives. This inward mindset results from what Arbinger terms self-betrayal, a failure to act on our internal sense of how we should treat others. Mitch emphasizes that self-deception is not just a personal issue but a core problem in organizations, affecting everything from team collaboration to leadership effectiveness. He explains how leaders unwittingly create and sustain the very conflicts they seek to resolve by failing to see their own role in the challenges they face. The discussion shifts to Arbinger's proposed solution: shifting from an inward mindset to an outward mindset. Mitch explains that an inward mindset centers on self-justification, blame, and defensiveness, where others are seen merely as obstacles or means to achieve personal goals. By contrast, an outward mindset recognizes others as individuals with needs, goals, and aspirations as real as our own. Mitch discusses how adopting an outward mindset can transform workplaces, leading to stronger relationships, better communication, higher accountability, and improved results. One of the most powerful concepts discussed is the idea of collusion—a cycle of conflict where two or more people reinforce each other's negative behaviors. Mitch describes how this dynamic is fueled by self-deception, as individuals are more focused on defending their own views than understanding others' perspectives. Collusion often manifests as blame, resentment, and resistance, creating silos and perpetuating dysfunction in teams. Mitch explains that breaking the cycle of collusion requires leaders to first recognize their own part in the conflict, shifting their focus from changing others to changing themselves.Mitch also offers insights into the updated 4th edition of Leadership and Self-Deception, which features modernized examples, diverse characters, and new scenarios that address contemporary workplace challenges. The new edition incorporates practical tools and study guides to help readers apply Arbinger's principles in both personal and professional contexts. Mitch outlines some of these tools, such as identifying moments of self-betrayal, practicing active curiosity about others, and implementing feedback loops that promote transparency and accountability. The episode concludes with a discussion of why these concepts are particularly relevant today. Mitch emphasizes that in a world marked by uncertainty, division, and rapid change, the ability to see others clearly and adopt an outward mindset is more urgent than ever. He explains how leaders who embrace these principles can create workplaces that are more inclusive, resilient, and adaptable. By fostering cultures where people are genuinely seen and valued, organizations can enhance performance, improve retention, and unlock greater potential at every level. Why You Should Listen:If you're a leader, manager, or someone interested in personal development, this episode offers a practical framework for understanding how mindset shapes behavior, relationships, and organizational outcomes. Mitch Warner presents Arbinger's concepts with clarity, making complex psychological principles accessible and actionable. Whether you're facing communication breakdowns, conflict, or disengagement within your team, the concepts of self-deception, collusion, and outward mindset will provide you with new ways to diagnose and address root problems. By applying these principles, you can transform not only your leadership but also your everyday interactions, creating deeper connections and achieving sustainable results. Key Discussion Points:Self-Deception as a Barrier to Leadership. The Inward vs. Outward Mindset.Collusion: A Cycle of Blame and Justification.Self-Betrayal as the Root of Dysfunction.Practical Tools for Mindset Shift. Notable Quotes:“Self-deception isn't about the other person—it's about us and the stories we create to justify our behavior.” — Mitch Warner“To change others, leaders must first change themselves. It starts by seeing our own contributions to the problems we face.” — Mitch Warner“When leaders have the courage to recognize how they contribute to problems, they open the door to transformational change—not just for themselves, but for their entire organizations.” — Mitch Warner“Imagine a workplace where no one has an image to protect—where people are fully open to feedback and focused solely on the mission.” — Mitch Warner“We often create the very conflicts we seek to resolve by failing to see others clearly and acting from a place of self-deception.” — Mitch Warner“Gratitude is one of the tools that can shift us from an inward to an outward mindset, helping us to acknowledge the humanity and value of others.” — Chris Schembra Action Items:Subscribe: If this conversation resonated with you, don't forget to subscribe for more heart-centered discussions on leadership, empathy, and gratitude.Share: Send this episode to someone who could use inspiration and a reminder to practice gratitude.Reflect: Who in your life deserves a thank you? Instead, Aflac has continued to distribute the medical companion to pediatric cancer patients (at no cost to them) and has evolved it to support children with sickle cell disease, another population facing long, difficult treatments. We invited two Aflac executives who worked on the duck's development to speak to the program's success and evolution: Jon Sullivan, Director of Corporate Communications, and Buffy Swinehart, Senior Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility. They share insights on how companies can sustain and grow their social impact efforts and remain true to their mission while making a real difference.Listen for insights on:How to pitch philanthropic opportunities to a CEODeveloping a public and philanthropic initiative that can stand up to scrutiny in public relationsThe importance of grounding philanthropic initiatives in data and researchResources + Links:Jon Sullivan's LinkedInBuffy Swinehart's LinkedInMy Special Aflac Duck®This robot duck eases children through cancer treatmentsParents and Caregivers Report a Reduction in Anxiety and Distress in Young Cancer Patients Using the My Special Aflac Duck® (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Aflac (01:09) - Meet Jon and Buffy (05:08) - MSAD's Origin Story (09:18) - Describing the Duck (14:35) - Initial Rollouts (19:00) - Sickle Cell Duck (20:29) - Other Innovations (21:50) - Research and Credibility (23:50) - Stories (26:57) - Advice for Authentic Ideas (32:30) - Purpose in an AI-Driven World (33:17) - Last Thoughts (35:11) - Wrap Up

Liza shared how her own experience as a military spouse drove her to create a solution for others facing the same challenges.Military spouses often find themselves moving every few years, making it difficult to build a traditional career. Liza understood this struggle firsthand and turned it into a business opportunity that connects military spouses with remote jobs in customer experience roles. “If I was climbing a traditional corporate ladder, I would constantly be starting over,” Liza explained. "I have a high skill set... I have a lot that I can give and contribute."Instant Teams allows military spouses to take their jobs with them when they move, offering stability in their careers. Liza's company builds entire customer experience teams for brands, providing a highly skilled workforce to companies while giving military spouses the continuity they need. The venture has grown significantly since its inception in 2016, with over 500 employees and 68,000 military spouses on their platform. Liza's innovative approach has not only solved a major problem for military families but also created a scalable business model. Her advice for entrepreneurs, especially women, is simple yet powerful: “Sizing the market upfront and telling the story along with it... made a huge difference in my personal success and being able to raise money.”Liza's work is an inspiring example of how identifying a problem close to home can lead to a meaningful, impactful business.tl;dr:Guest Introduction: Liza Rodewald, founder of Instant Teams, was featured. The company connects military spouses with customer experience jobs, helping them maintain their careers despite frequent relocations due to military life.Challenges and Achievements: Liza discussed the challenge of raising venture capital as a woman, noting that less than 2% goes to women-led companies. Despite this, she successfully raised funds and grew her company while being a military spouse.Instant Teams' Mission: Instant Teams is dedicated to building remote customer experience teams for companies, using the skills of military spouses who can work remotely and maintain continuity despite relocations.Business Model: Instant Teams works with middle-market and enterprise companies like Aflac and Expensify, offering both a marketplace and fully outsourced services. They have grown to over 500 employees and serve 68,000 military spouses.Superpower and Advice: Liza emphasized her superpower of solving problems by seeing the bigger picture. She advises women entrepreneurs to focus on building relationships, providing transparency to investors, and leveraging networks for long-term success. How to Develop Problem-Solving with Passion As a SuperpowerLiza Rodewald's superpower is her ability to step back, see the big picture, and solve complex problems. With a background in engineering, she approaches challenges by analyzing issues and finding solutions that not only address the immediate need but create lasting impact. Her deep passion for helping others fuels her drive to solve meaningful problems, particularly those affecting the military spouse community.Liza shared a moving example of how her superpower played out in real life. She opened a co-working space in Southern Pines, designed to connect military spouses with job opportunities. One day, a military spouse came in, overwhelmed and struggling with a rigid job that wasn't compatible with her lifestyle. Liza and her team were able to match her with a more flexible position that aligned with her needs. The connection transformed the woman's life, providing a sense of balance and fulfillment. This personal interaction exemplified Liza's ability to identify problems and create meaningful, life-changing solutions.Tips for Developing This Superpower:* Step Back for Perspective: Take a moment to step back from challenges and view the bigger picture. Analyze how different elements connect and where opportunities for problem-solving lie.* Lead with Passion: Fuel your efforts with genuine passion for helping others. When you care deeply about the outcome, you'll find creative and effective ways to overcome obstacles.* Build Networks: Establish and nurture relationships with people who can help you solve problems. Keep these connections warm, as they may provide unexpected opportunities for collaboration or support.* Stay Realistic: While passion drives your efforts, temper it with practicality. Make tough decisions when necessary to maintain a sustainable business model while keeping your mission intact.By following Liza Rodewald's example and advice, you can make problem-solving with passion a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileLiza Rodewald (she/her):Co-Founder/CEO, Instant TeamsAbout Instant Teams: Instant Teams leads the way as a CX talent marketplace committed to the financial well-being of military families while providing companies instant access to remarkable talent.Website: instantteams.comX/Twitter Handle: @Instant_TeamsCompany Facebook Page: fb.com/instantteamsBiographical Information: Liza is a 4x entrepreneur and software engineer. We've got a weird Deion Sanders press conference and scrimmage intel from Georgia and Ohio State, but first some news. (0:00-2:14) Intro: Previewing the show (2:15-4:58) Texas A&M RB Rueben Owens out for the season (4:59-8:16) Iowa's QB Status (8:17-10:06) AD (10:07-32:31) Deion Sanders Celebrates Media Day (32:32-57:10) Deep Dive into Georgia's Fall Camp (57:11-1:17:20) Spencer Holbrook joins to update us on Ohio State (1:17:21-1:18:22) Conclusion, see you tomorrow! Bad news out of College Station. Texas A&M tailback Rueben Owens will miss the entire 2024 season after suffering an injury during the weekend. Meanwhile, there might be a quarterback controversy at Iowa. Northwestern transfer Brendan Sullivan might challenge Cade McNamara for the starting job. Colorado coach Deion Sanders held a bizarre press conference Friday that included shutting out the local CBS affiliate for, um, reasons and a random question about Aflac that felt like a plant. Sanders doesn't sound ultra confident after a week of practice, but Andy explains why he wants unhinged press conferences the rest of the way from Coach Prime. Next, Jake Rowe of On3's Dawgs HQ talks Georgia following the first major scrimmage of the preseason. How is the receiver depth after the dismissal of RaRa Thomas? Which tight end(s) will wind up getting the touches that used to go to Brock Bowers? Later, Spencer Holbrook of On3's Lettermen Row talks Ohio State after the Buckeyes' first major preseason scrimmage. Kansas State transfer Will Howard looks like he's got a grip on QB1. Meanwhile, Ryan Day keeps demurring when asked about freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith. That's OK, because everyone else is talking about the former No. 1 overall recruit.
