The Wellness Paradox

At the heart of the Wellness Paradox is creating viable referral mechanisms between physicians and fitness professionals. Indeed, making fitness professionals apart of healthcare means seamless referral, just like any other aspect of healthcare. A significant part of that referral mechanism is an accurate resource for physicians (and consumers) to find and vet fitness professionals with appropriate experience and education to work with individuals who suffer from chronic disease. Our guest in episode 66, Lisa Dougherty, the founder for the MedFit Network, has done just that.  Our conversation will explore Lisa's experience with her father that caused her to develop the vision to create this network. Furthermore, we'll discuss the gaps she views exists in educating fitness professionals on medical conditions, and what she has done with the MedFit Education Foundation to close off those gaps. Finally, we'll spend some time talking about her latest exciting initiative, MedFit Care, an exciting new program seeking to connect patients with physicians who can provide referral to qualified fitness professionals to assist in treating their medical condition.Lisa is a very passionate and enthusiastic advocate for medical fitness and enhancing the standard of practice in our profession. She has dedicated her career to making this a reality through all of her work with MedFit. This conversation will provide a compelling look “under the hood,” at her journey as well as the opportunities she sees for fitness professionals to work within the healthcare delivery system in the future. Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/66 Our Guest: Lisa Dougherty Lisa started her fitness career in 1999 and has worked for over 20 years with clients with medical conditions or chronic diseases, amassing dozens of certifications and continuing education along the way.  Inspired by her father's cancer battle, she created the MedFit Network to help connect those with medical conditions to fitness, health & wellness professionals who could serve them. Later, seeing a gap in specialized education for these professionals, she founded the MedFit Education Foundation to facilitate and create high-quality education for all facets of medical fitness. She just recently launched MedFit Care which will offer medically necessary exercise prescriptions.

Using health benefits for personal training? At one point this was wishful thinking. Get sick, they said, then you can use those flex benefits. Gain weight, lose muscle and strength, then come back was essentially the message.  Ever wished you could use your flex benefits toward your personal training and run into obstacles and red tape? Well, you're going to want to tune in because the world has changed in many ways this past 2 and a half years. This one is a welcome and it's just the beginning. If you sat on the sidelines watching gyms close, exercise options dwindle for those who needed it most then listen up. This interview episode unpacks the new MedFit Care and explains how if you've got a special condition requiring a more medical exercise specialist than the norm of pass-test-become-certified process, this is for you.  Exercise became essential. Though it took time, over the course of the pandemic we've seen it happen. While some claim gyms are germ-ridden others have acknowledged that gyms, and trainers or even more qualified medical exercise specialists and health coaches, are a must.  Let's dive into this episode about using health benefits for personal training or health coaching.  My Guest:  Lisa Dougherty started her fitness career in 1999 and has worked for over 20 years with clients with medical conditions or chronic disease, amassing dozens of certifications and continuing education along the way. She established the MedFit Education Foundation, a nonprofit 501©(3) in 2017 to elevate the quality and amount of available education for fitness and allied healthcare professionals. Lisa Dougherty first became interested in genealogy as a teenager in the 1970s when she helped her father find relatives in Ireland. She pursued genealogy again as an adult when, after her father died, her mother gave her a folder with the papers they had assembled. Back then, records were obtained the old-fashioned way, by writing letters and receiving documents. The internet along with genetic testing has revolutionized genealogy. Now, says Dougherty, many more are interested in finding their family history. Whereas before genealogy was often a hobby pursued by retirees, many young people are now involved. Anyone can do it, Dougherty says, adding the caveat: You have to be prepared for surprises. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Power Quotes From The Show "There are different motivational factors that are pushing people to focus on their health. More people are now changing their diet, exercising more, or getting into yoga and meditation. I truly see that as a growing trend." - Lisa Dougherty of @MedFitNet http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "I always felt like there was something that I was supposed to do with my life and I really do think it's my ability to bring people together. While my dad was ill, he was still my mentor and very supportive. There were many times when I wanted to give up because everything was so overwhelming, but he kept telling me, "You can't give up," and that mantra became a part of me." - Lisa Dougherty "I want to leave something behind that's greater than me. The MedFit Network is a very important project for me because I feel like I'm positioning myself to really influence and change a lot of people's lives in a positive way and improve their quality of life. We really need as much help as we can get because we're more obese and sicker than ever as a population right now." - Lisa Dougherty "The Internet and trying to figure out healthcare can be overwhelming. I really wanted to make MedFit Network be the go-to place for people. We have doctors who helped create this and we even have an entire medical advisory board who have come together to create this project. So, this is a trusted website and that's why we have 30 different medical and health organizations that all recommend MFN to people who need to get help." - Lisa Dougherty "Some people are becoming caregivers and they want to try to get in better shape and health to be able to take care of a parent. There are also older people who are being motivated to make changes in their life to spend better quality time with their grandkids. Then, we have the circle of aging people who want to retire, but they can't so they have to work longer and they're looking at trying to get healthier so they can do their job for more years. So, there are several different motivational factors that are pushing people out there to maybe do something that they might not have otherwise done. More people are now motivated to change their diet, do more exercise, or get into breathwork and meditation. I see that as a growing trend now." - Lisa Dougherty Links From Today's Show MedFit Network Facebook Twitter YouTube LinkedIn Lisa Dougherty Facebook LinkedIn Whole Body Fitness Lisa Dougherty in the news Lisa Dougherty's Certifications The Medical Fitness Network - A Community Health Resource MFN / WITS Webinar with MFN Founder Lisa Dougherty Why You Should Know About Medical Fitness and Lisa Dougherty Why Fitness Professionals Should Join the Medical Fitness Network Are You 3D Fit? Folger Shakespeare Library: Shakespeare Unlimited

Shakespeare adaptations are a proud tradition. Prokofiev turned ROMEO AND JULIET into a ballet. Verdi turned MACBETH and OTHELLO into operas, and THE TAMING OF THE SHREW and TWELFTH NIGHT have been converted by Hollywood into teen comedies. But there’s a different type of Shakespeare adaptation that’s a lot harder to get right – that’s when someone takes an existing piece of popular entertainment and reimagines it as if it might have been written by Shakespeare. As Ian Doescher can tell us, that can be hard to get right. He’s the author of six books under the series title, William Shakespeare’s Star Wars, based on the hit films featuring Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and the rest. As you’ll hear, making this work has taken far more thinking and craftsmanship than you might imagine. Ian is interviewed by Stephanie Kaye. Garland Scott is the associate producer. It was edited by Gail Kern Paster and Esther Ferington.
