If your credit score makes you want to say a four-letter word, take a deep breath and relax. Madeline, co-founder of ScoreED has built her company specifically to help you! Program Notes In my recent conversation with financial expert Madeline Vetrano she discussed the challenges faced by women climbing the career ladder in that industry. Madeline also revealed that financial infidelity, often referred to as financial adultery, has become the #1 prevailing issue in escalating divorce rates. She revealed that many of her female clients are caught in the crossfire of being named on all debts but not on the assets represented by those loans. Madeline speaks of the increasing number of female clients she works with who find themselves in critical credit card debt due to trying to make a career in multi-level marketing (MLM), network marketing, or associate marketing. Research reveals that around 5% of all women in these industries actually make money, the rest often fall out of the industry or into crimpling debt. NINA SIMONS is Co-founder and Chief Relationship Officer at Bioneers and leads its Everywoman's Leadership program. Throughout her career spanning the nonprofit, social entrepreneurship, corporate, and philanthropic sectors, Nina has worked with nearly a thousand diverse women leaders across disciplines, race, class, age and orientation to create conditions for mutual learning, trust and leadership development. She co-edited Moonrise: The Power of Women Leading from the Heart, and authored Nature, Culture, and the Sacred: A Woman Listens for Leadership—released as a second edition in 2022 with an accompanying discussion guide and embodied practices. The first edition won Nautilus awards in the categories of Women in the 21st Century and Social Change & Social Justice. Both books are being used to inspire and ignite learning in individuals, circles and classrooms. I recently had the gift of sitting with author, speaker and social justice advocate, Nina Simons. Starting with how one of the patriarchy's primary tactics for maintaining dominant control is to prevent women from discovering their full potential as leaders provided a rich and potent conversation. The patriarchy, justifiably, fears that when women come together in relationships built on trust, they have the power to develop each other's leadership skills profoundly and rapidly. As Nina and I discussed, women are moving past the time of letting the patriarchy's fear become their limitation. As Nina shared from her years of study, a primary contributor to the hyper- masculinization in which we have been living starting with The Burning Times. 300 years of persecution of women has left deep-seated epigenetic trauma that still effects all people of our current generations. As the listener will hear, Nina is unwavering in her hearts knowing that as women break free from the labels that have been bequeathed to them, we will all become the powerful leaders who will transform our world. And Nina is committed to opening new pathways for us to make this our collective reality. Program Notes Having the opportunity to speak with Dr. Victoria Ann Hasson about the world of politics from South Africa to the UK to Australia was a fascinating peek behind the veil of what is similar worldwide and where the dramatic differences present themselves. Dr Hasson spoke to her heart and soul commitment to helping women politicians to feel seen in their experiences of navigating politics; seen in their experiences of trying to be a soulful, connecting, and whole-hearted leader. Her hope is to enable women to feel encouraged and supported and to know that their experiences genuinely matter - not simply to people like Dr Hasson, but to society as a whole. Her approach to helping women find their voice is rooted in articulating the truth of what it takes to deliver democracy, to begin reshaping political society, innovating democracy, improving the quality of democratic processes, and reimagining political leadership styles. I found her approach of inquiry and investment one that will easily translate into the business world and serve to help women to move from their greater power. I invite you to tune into this powerful conversation about holding power to account in a way that allows everyone to win. What are the 3 things you want to speak about? Why it matters that we care about politicians, what made me care about politicians in the first place, and what I would like to say to any struggling politician. Bio I have been so fortunate to work in politics, in parliaments, and with politicians around the globe for 14 years. I have entered some incredible democratic spaces at pivotal moments in history, and I have observed the human impact of the political experience amongst individuals charged with navigating it for all our sake. I started out being interested in how democratic practices within the national parliament of South Africa would be re-shaped at the end of apartheid, which was the focus of my PhD. The majority of those entering the new parliament in 1994 had no experience of democracy from the inside, and I was fascinated to realise that a person's experience of democracy, which in this instance was one of exclusion, shapes their actions irrespective of their current reality and experiences. Since then I have worked internationally with politicians around the globe and I have come to realisation that all politicians know their feelings do not matter, and should not matter, to the content of their policy decisions. Yet, they still have them, and those feelings still play a role in shaping the form democracy takes, and this form shapes political leadership culture. Consequently, we may contemplate creating AI politicians to override this, but until this happens I intend to spend the rest of my life helping us all to understand the reality of how it feels to deliver democracy, with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of democratic processes and innovating democratic institutions. Program Notes Being a woman of European decent, I always look forward to and value the opportunity to speak with women who are leaders in DE&I for the chance to discover more of my own unconscious bias that was trained from birth. The privilege of having Dr. Sacha Joseph-Mathews as a guest was a powerful experience in this direction. Her wisdom about how common it is to overlook the oppressions of those around us served to heighted my own awareness of oppressive nuances I might have previously overlooked. Combining this with her clear reminder to be mindful of the oppressions that are not external, but rather radiate from within is a call to each of us to listen internally with as much attention as we pay to the outer environment. I am still contemplating her invitation to learn what being our authentic self is, and to notice how some relationships are not healthy for maintaining authenticity. I invite you to tune in to discover how the powerful illuminations of this powerful and generous woman can enhance your own life and perceptions. BIO: Dr. Sacha Joseph-Mathews is the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and a Marketing Professor in the Eberhardt School of Business at the University of the Pacific. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, a Masters of Science degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, and a PhD in Business Administration with a specialization in marketing. Dr. Joseph-Mathews has taught classes in the United States, the Caribbean Asia and Africa in international marketing, international business, marketing management, services marketing, advertising and promotions, hospitality and services management, entrepreneurial marketing, customer service, diversity management and event planning. She has presented and published articles in tourism, marketing, advertising, ethical consumption, diversity and inclusion, green consumerism, supply chain management and international trade. As a professor Dr. Mathews has been actively involved in community outreach which has led her to work with social entrepreneurs across the world teaching them marketing fundamentals. She is particularly passionate about working with female social entrepreneurs. In addition to being an academic, Professor Joseph-Mathews has worked as a researcher and DEI consultant for many non-profit and for-profit organizations, across the globe. Program Notes A fierce warrior for women's rights, bodily autonomy, and naming women in the U.S. Constitution, the conversation with Karen Hinton is stimulating and informative. Best known for her role as press secretary to both former Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Karen has always been determined to “speak up not shut up” on issues that impact women. From discussing the Dobbs case that saw the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade, to her experiences with the issue of abortion, both directly personal and within her community, Karen shared her commitment to be instrumental in change and how we can all become change agents in our own communities and the country at large. Biography Mississippi native Karen Hinton is a nationally-recognized media professional in Washington and New York. Best known for her role as press secretary to both former Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Hinton played what Politico dubbed the “Helen of Troy role” in the clash between Cuomo, now the former Governor of New York, and Mayor de Blasio. The New York Times called the clash “one of America's ugliest political feuds.” Hinton cut her teeth as the press secretary for the first Black Congressman from Mississippi since Reconstruction in 1986. The Democratic National Committee hired her in 1989, serving a similar role for Ron Brown, who was the first Black Chairman of the DNC and a key political strategist to elect Bill Clinton as President. In 1995, Hinton joined the Clinton Administration as press secretary for Cuomo at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. During that time, President Clinton began to face charges of womanizing (and worse). Hinton later relocated to New York and became Mayor de Blasio's press secretary. She found herself at the center of the crossfire between longtime frenemies Cuomo and de Blasio, often becoming the subject of news coverage herself. Known for never ducking from a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career when a catastrophic brain injury from a freak accident confronted her with the battle of her life. Emerging from a coma, and learning to walk and talk again, Hinton was determined to “speak up not shut up” on issues involving women, men, and power in politics. Program Notes Part II of a powerful conversation. Each time I speak with Wendy Murphy I come away feeling educated, inspired, and informed about the continuing struggle for us, as women, to achieve full human status in the U.S. Constitution. Sharing in conversation with a litigator for the rights of women and children, who is also a scholar in the history of the abuses and small victories of women always clarifies what is still yet to be done. In this conversation, our listeners will learn some of what we can each do on a consistent basis to uplift ourselves, and all of womankind. While only vaguely familiar with Alice Paul prior to meeting Wendy, I have come to love and honor this woman who actually wrote the original Equal Rights Amendment. I continue to find that learning a woman's history offers clear signals and directional indicators of how we can progress to become an empowered body. I trust that each of you will receive incredible nuggets of wisdom from this conversation. BIO Wendy Murphy has served as an adjunct professor of sexual violence law at New England Law|Boston, for over 15 years. Where she also co-directs the Women's and Children's Advocacy Project under the Center for Law and Social Responsibility. A former Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, Wendy prosecuted child abuse and sex crimes cases for many years. In 1992 she founded the first organization in the nation to provide pro bono legal services to crime victims. Wendy is an impact litigator whose work in state and federal courts has changed the law to better protect the constitutional and civil rights of victimized women and children. She writes and lectures widely on the constitutional and civil rights of women and children, and criminal justice policy and is a contributing editor for The Sexual Assault Report, Wendy's impact litigation in the area of campus sexual assault, beginning in the early 1990s, includes groundbreaking victories against Harvard College in 2002, and Harvard Law School and Princeton University in 2010, which cases led the way to widespread awareness and reforms, including the well-known April 2011 Dear Colleague Letter. Wendy is a popular and bold speaker on the lecture circuit who describes herself as “fiercely non-partisan.” Wendy is a well-known television legal analyst. She has worked for NBC, CBS, CNN, and Fox News, and regularly provides legal analysis for network and cable news programs. Her first book, “And Justice For Some,” was published by Penguin/Sentinel in 2007, and re-released in paperback in 2013.
“I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights, especially as it pertains to women, I came into it organically.” An alternative in case that requires too much space. “I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights…I came into it organically.” Wendy Murphy Having the opportunity to welcome Wendy Murphy as a guest provided one of the most fascinating and educational conversations on the plight of women that I've ever experienced. From outlining how the law is written to support violence against women to the extent to which there is no one monitoring our judges when they rule in discriminatory ways against women was eye-opening, in the least. Listening to Wendy explain how it is our US Constitution that stands as the underlying cause that allows judges in every courtroom, not just criminal cases, to treat women in a discriminatory way, further ignited my inner passion to fight for women's rights, in my own smaller way. I invite you to join us for this Part 1 of a two-part conversation on what women need to know in order to stand up for themselves on how the minimization of our entire gender is not just alive and well, but legally sanctioned. BIO For more than fifteen years, Wendy Murphy has served as adjunct professor of sexual violence law at New England Law|Boston, where she also co directs the Women's and Children's Advocacy Project under the Center for Law and Social Responsibility. A former Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, Wendy prosecuted child abuse and sex crimes cases for many years. Wendy writes and lectures widely on the constitutional and civil rights of women and children and criminal justice policy. She is a contributing editor for The Sexual Assault Report and writes a regular column for The Patriot Ledger. Wendy has published numerous scholarly articles including a landmark law review article explaining the legal relationship between sexual assault on campus and Title IX. Dubbed the “Goddaughter of Title IX” by the “Godmother of Title IX,” Dr. Bernice Sandler, Wendy's impact litigation in the area of campus sexual assault, beginning in the early 1990s, includes groundbreaking victories against Harvard College in 2002, and Harvard Law School and Princeton University in 2010, which cases led the way to widespread awareness and reforms, including the well-known April 2011 Dear Colleague Letter. Wendy is a popular and bold speaker on the lecture circuit who describes herself as “fiercely non-partisan.” Wendy is also a well-known television legal analyst who Emmy Award-winning journalist Emily Rooney calls the “best talker” on television with a “finger on the pulse of victims' and women's rights.” Wendy has worked for NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox News. “What would have been easier in your life if you'd had someone to talk to, someone who had been through it before.” Beverly Price Beverly is one of the three women I've recently been honored to meet, who are on a mission to help 100,000 women to live powerful and fabulous lives. The candor and clarity she expresses in sharing her amazing story of the journey from playing small to rising to her fullest self and now helping other women do the same was nothing short of inspiring. I am always moved by women who are focusing their skills and talents on supporting other women of any race, or ethnicity. geography, age, or profession to be able to experience the freedom that self-empowerment brings. With actionable tips, Beverly was a wonderful guest who shares great impact forward to all of our listeners. Beverly Price Bio Beverly Price is the Host and founder of Her Self Expression Podcast. With an MBA and a background as a leader in the financial services industry, Beverly comes from a background of making herself small in order to make others feel safe. While in the corporate world, she didn't even accessorize her attire but instead focused on fitting into a man's world. When she finally embraced her ability to own her power and make a statement, she went from self-doubt to self-love.
During several hours in a bomb shelter: “I was putting on my reporter's cap…I almost forgot to notice anything other than I am following my profession, I'm observing.” (Isa, if this is too long, let me know and I'll adjust.) Program Notes Having the opportunity to hear about Mitzi's amazing and courageous trek to Ukraine inspired and fascinated me on multiple levels. I got quite a chuckle out of the fact that although approved by the US government to travel as a war correspondent at age 70, NATO deemed her too old. Never one to be stopped, at 81 Mitzi accepted an invitation from General Nebytov of Kyiv Regional Police. Like everyone else, I've seen the reports, written and filmed, of the trials of Ukraine's people, and yet hearing the perspective of a female, American war correspondent filled in so many blanks and has left me with a profoundly increased respect for the courage and tenacity of both Mitzi and the people of Ukraine. Mitzi Perdue BIO Mitzi is an anti-human trafficking advocate, a former rice farmer, and the past president of the 40,000-member American Agri-Women. In the 1990s and early 2000s her nationally syndicated column, "The Environment and You," was the most widely syndicated environmental column in the US. Recently she's written Relentless, a biography of Mark Victor Hansen, the Chicken Soup for the Soul guy. Royalties for Relentless will go to helping combat human trafficking. Having the opportunity to sit in conversation with Annemarie Shrouder was an incredible honor. Even better is the opportunity to share her wisdom, peace, insights and grace with those of you who tune into Women We Should Know. I openly acknowledge that my privilege had kept me from considering the difference in how bias is expressed based on the depth of one's melanin—until I read the title of Annemarie's book. The very words Brown in a Black and White World shook me out of that ignorance to this being a unique challenge, unto itself. As Annemarie shared her personal story of finding her way through the shades of others privilege and bias, into a space of such empowerment that she is now recognized as a world leader in the space of ED & I, was filled with immense gratitude for her, her path and what she shares with the world. I invited you to tune into this powerful episode that will educate, illuminate and expand who you are as a human in this world of diversly different, and wonderfully similar human beings. Annemarie Shrouder BIO Annemarie Shrouder has spent more than 20 years in the field of Diversity and Inclusion as a facilitator, consultant, and international speaker, and is the bestselling author of Being Brown in a Black and White World: Conversations for Leaders on Race, Racism and Belonging. A Diversity & Inclusion expert with a Masters in Bias Awareness, Annemarie inspires awareness and connection. Whether she is presenting to an audience, leading a workshop, consulting with a client, or writing, she creates opportunities for people to see more – more of each other, themselves, and the world around them. In so doing, she facilitates an opening to create spaces where people feel a sense belonging and connection, where they can learn together, and be all of who they are. These are the spaces where real change can happen – for people, organizations and communities. Other identities that she brings to her role as a “can opener” include: mother to a 10-year-old daughter, biracial child of immigrants to Canada, queer-identified, nature-lover, believer in the power of connection and the both/and vs the either or, and a multiple gold medal swimmer. Annemarie works with diversity broadly and is passionate about healing the racial divide.
Lesley recently had the opportunity to share conversation with Ellen Patnaude where she shared the processes she employs to help clients see things in way they never thought about before, whatever the topic. The new insight they gain allows them to discover renewed interest in addressing whatever the “it” is that's getting in their way. Ellen revealed that in addition to helping people to see things in a new way, she challenges them to break down what they want to do differently into "the next conversation" application. Ellen generously shared some of her approaches to helping clients effect these positive changes, which improves their communication and therefore, their lives. One vital point she speaks to extensively is the importance of shifting the societal conversation from, “asking hard or uncomfortable questions” to “asking better questions”. One of the most fascinating things Ellen shares is her recognition of our human addiction to assumption and the ways it limits us. Sharing some of her insights, Ellen's new book will be releasing October 1, 2022. “I Thought You Knew; Confessions of a Chronic Assumer and How You Can Stop Guessing Your Way Through Important Interactions.” Be sure to watch Women We Should Know for Ellen's return to discuss that in-depth in early October. Lesley recently found herself in a conversation that provided her a whole new level of awareness of workplace abuse that untold women, and some men, are experiencing daily. In this episode Aliza Shatzman courageously shares her story of abuse at the hands of a DC Superior Court Judge for whom she was clerking, right out of law school. Aliza shares the devastating results of this experience for which she had no recourse due to judicial immunity from accountability. Courageously, she ultimately picked herself up and is now the President and Co-Founder of The Legal Accountability Project. Her passion and mission is to change the rules of the game that sees women disproportionately facing harassment and retaliation during clerkships. Undeserved punishments that they either suffer in silence or find driving them from the legal profession. Aliza's organization is providing a voice for the mistreated clerks--particularly, but not exclusively, women--who reach out every day to thank her for speaking out. They openly confess that they could never find the courage to speak publicly, all the while encouraging Aliza to keep going. Tune in for a powerfully illuminative view of women's challenges and battles from within the center of our legal/judicial system. WATCH VIDEO VERSION HERE: https://youtu.be/SOhvJ7M6SJ4 Aliza Shatzman is the President and Co-Founder of The Legal Accountability Project, a nonprofit aimed at ensuring that as many law clerks as possible have positive clerkship experiences, while extending support and resources to those who do not. Aliza earned her BA from Williams College and her JD from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. After law school, Aliza clerked in DC Superior Court during the 2019-2020 term. In March 2022, Aliza submitted written testimony for a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing about the lack of workplace protections in the federal judiciary, detailing her personal experience with gender discrimination, harassment, and retaliation by a former DC judge. Aliza now writes and speaks regularly about judicial accountability. In this provocative and timely episode Lesley welcomes Karen Hinton, author of Penis Politics. From early life in Mississippi to Washington DC, NYC and back to Mississippi, plus a side jaunt to New Orleans Karen speaks directly and transparently to the issues she raises in her Best Selling book. She speaks to the listeners of how her abiding commitment to dismantling racism placed her in the position to be a spokesperson regarding its devastating effects. Karen addresses how the dynamic of how men's internal struggle becomes an outward abuse of women, and how this is exacerbated in the case of men who hold power in any manifestation. With great respect for what #metoo accomplished, Karen saw there was no attention being given to the middle class and low-income women. The more she studied, the more clearly she realized the degree to which the issue of sexual abuse is pervasive, through every sector of society and even into our schools. Within the pages of her book and during this conversation on Women We Should Know, Karen offers action points that we as women can take to put a stop to these abuses. She reminds women that we are more than 50% of the population, and within that rest great power. Mississippi native Karen Hinton is a nationally-recognized media professional in Washington and New York. Known from never ducking from a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career when a catastrophic brain injury from a freak accident confronted her with the battle of her life. Emerging from a coma, learning to walk and talk again, Hinton was determined to “speak up not shut up” on issues involving women, men and power in politics Watch video version here: https://youtu.be/09WLkGlsT10 Instagram @jkarenhinton TikTok @karenhinton

Join Lesley and her guest Jennifer Aks-Newman for a poignantly unique and empowering look at the lives of womxn. After 16 years of empowering inner-city kids through artistic expression in the NYC school system, COVID struck. Unable to be in the rooms with her kids in the way she had been for so long, Jen shares how she was filled with a longing to get back to her empowerment work, but had to find a new way. Jen tells the story of how her love of womxn and her own talents as a photographer, dancer, producer, film editor, director and coach came together to create herStories. Over the past 18 months Jen has created over 100, 3-5 min films of profound impact. Jen reveals to the listener how she works with womxn to learn their story, then leads them through the creation of a body of raw film. From there Jen applies her poignant and provocative approach to editing and synthesizes the footage into a short film that tells the subject's entire story. By helping womxn share their stories in such a vulnerable, creative, inspiring and celebratory way, they are able to walk the path of deep healing from innocence to devastation and ultimately the emancipation of Radical Self-Acceptance. Through her art, her vision, her love of womxn and her commitment to humanity, Jen is walking womxn through the abyss to a level of freedom they have never imagined. Through she and Lesley's conversation Jen shares how each of the womxn, upon viewing their personal story in its completed form, are rendered into a state of awe. Their ability to love, appreciate and revere themselves is fully restored. Jen's completely individual and inspired approach to this artistic expression is producing transformation for the womxn, the viewer, and for the people connected to the ones watching. An impact that begins with a single womxn, spreads to have impact on a global level. Due to our not being completely past the pandemic, Jen has started with virtual Gallery Viewings for small audiences. Ultimately, her vision is to create a way and means of her work becoming a traveling show, hopefully presented as uniquely as the work itself. Jennifer Aks-Neuman, Story Producer and Embodiment Coach founded herStories in response to the pandemic as a way to help Womxn tell their stories of resilience. Jen has combined her 30+ years of movement, photography, editing, speaking and directing to curate the herStories collection. These videos are meant to educate, inspire, empower and open our hearts and minds to what is possible. Jen's mission is to shift the mindset of humanity, 1 story at a time. The list of what women were allowed to do in the professional world sixty years ago is limited to secretarial duties. Fortunately, there were those emboldened and audacious few who ignored all the limitations of the time to carve new inroads for their own fulfillment, and leave doors open behind them to give access to the women who would follow. Jane Bradley was raised on a sprawling, working ranch in New Mexico and empowered by her cowboy father to go places no woman of her time had ever gone. You can't command those prices for your paintings, you're a woman. But she did. You can't open a gallery on the world-famous Canyon Road in Santa Fe, you're a woman. But she did. Tired of having to drive all the way to Dallas for art supplies she opened an art supply store, that in its first year became the anchor store in what was then, Santa Fe's newest outdoor mall. From being one of the earliest Executive Directors of Genesis Business Incubator, University of Arkansas, to moving to Russia to manage a Russian football team, to remaining in Russia during perestroika and working with technology transfer, to returning to New Mexico to found a series of successful businesses, Jane has always made her own rules and done it her own way. Along the path she has spent many years sharing the wisdom gained as a serial entrepreneur by mentoring those who would come up behind her. Join Lesley and Jane for a fascinating conversation into everything from the power and necessity of mentoring to daring to create new pathways. Jane Bradley is a third generation New Mexican. The love of art and a natural talent made a BFA a natural choice. After success as a studio artist and gallery owner in Santa Fe, Jane became intrigued by the process of business. This interest led to additional education followed by other varying and successful business endeavors. The ability to teach and share has been ongoing and a constant in Jane's life. Curiosity is the one word that most clearly defines Jane's life. This curiosity has led to many personal and professional successes. From moving to a small hamlet in Arkansas with prince charming - to becoming the Executive Director of the Genesis Business Incubator at the University of Arkansas - to moving on to Russia during perestroika and working with technology transfer - to returning to the much loved and missed New Mexico, each new challenge was attacked with enthusiasm and determination .
