We love native plants and habit-friendly yards at Nature's Archive, and I have a few exciting updates from my yard: spoiler: native plants are working! And stay tuned for a re-air of a classic episode with Leslie Inman from Pollinator Friendly Yards. There are plenty of useful insights for both habitat-friendly yard practices, and community building. Afterall, we need everyone to not only take action, but spread the word. And we have new episodes around the corner, too. It's been incredibly busy these last couple of months, so thanks for your patience as we work to keep all of the proverbial plates spinning! On to the episode...I started Nature's Archive podcast in an effort to understand the stories of people making a difference for the environment. I needed to be inspired, wanted to learn how they did it, and share that inspiration and knowledge with anyone willing to listen. While we haven't strayed too far from those initial aspirations, I do have many more topic-centric episodes than I did at the start.Today's episode is a “back to my roots” episode. With 184,000 members, it is perhaps the top spot for people to discuss sustainable personal landscaping. Today, we discuss not only how the group formed, but the lessons that she has learned along the way. This includes how to “reach” people who may be skeptical about inviting insects to their yards, how to make it easy to get started, and more.Leslie also has two books - Your Yard is Nature and The Butterfly Egg and the Little Tree.FULL SHOW NOTESLinksPollinator Friendly YardsDave GoulsonDoug Tallamy & Homegrown National Park (TikTok)Doug Tallamy appeared on Nature's Archive Podcast Episode #26Leslie's Books - Your Yard is Nature and The Butterfly Egg and the Little TreeMary Reynolds, We Are The ArkNancy Lawson, The Humane Gardener [Book]Travis Longcore (light pollution ecologist)Wild Ones Support Us On Patreon!Buy our Merch!Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist site: https://brianholtzmusic.com Discover the Jumpstart Nature Podcast - entertaining and immersive, it's the nature fix we all need.Check past Nature's Archive episodes for amazing guests like Doug Tallamy, Elaine Ingham, and Rae Wynn-Grant, covering topics from bird migration to fungi to frogs and bats!

Wow, what an insightful and heartwarming conversation we had on the podcast today! We were joined by the dynamic duo behind the new picture book "Home" - author Matt de la Peña and illustrator Loren Long. These two creative minds really clicked as they shared the story behind their collaborative process. Matt explained that "Home" explores the evolving concept of home, inspired by his observations during the pandemic. He was fascinated by how homes took on new roles and how nature started to reclaim spaces. Loren, the perfect match for bringing these big ideas to life, shared how he relished the challenge of illustrating profound themes. The two clearly have a deep mutual respect, often finishing each other's thoughts as they described their fruitful partnership. But it wasn't all just about the book - Matt and Loren also touched on the importance of not shying away from complex topics in children's literature. They believe kids are more than ready to grapple with big ideas, as long as the stories offer hope and resilience too.  We also heard from debut author Allison McGauley, whose picture book "Kenzie's Little Tree" draws from her own family's experiences with chronic illness. Allison spoke passionately about the need to have open conversations with kids about difficult topics, something she learned firsthand. Her book aims to both reflect the realities of families facing health challenges and provide a window for those who haven't had that experience. Overall, this episode was a treasure trove of insights into the creative process, the power of representation in children's books, and the transformative role that open dialogue can play, even for our youngest readers. I'm sure listeners will come away feeling inspired and eager to share these meaningful stories with the little ones in their lives. In this deeply personal episode, I talk about my journey through motherhood. I confront the shadows of self-judgment and comparison that haunt so many of us moms.  The constant battle against the nagging feeling that I'm not doing enough, the relentless comparisons with other moms who seem to have it all together—it's a cycle that's as exhausting as it is unending.  And then, there's the overthinking, the fear that maybe I'm not a good enough parent.  But here's the truth I've learned: Embracing my imperfections and letting go of these self-imposed limitations is key.  It's not about being the perfect mom; it's about being the best mom I can be for my kids at any given time.  And in this video, I share how I'm learning to do just that. Here are the key moments from the episode: 2:00 The struggles of motherhood 4:30 Questioning my worthiness as a mom 8:30 Motherhood is the ultimate creation 15:30 Why motherhood is meant to be messy 20:30 My regrets as a mom 29:30 Why you need to release the mom guilt to be a better parent 33:15 Finding those little pockets of joy in motherhood 43:00 The overthinking cycle all moms go through 49:40 Tips for moms when the kids are leaving the nest 54:00 An exercise to do with your kids every single day 58:00 Stop judging yourself based on the “Instagram moms” 1:05:45 My advice for all moms out there Join me on my couch as Keira and I discuss the messiness of motherhood and how in order to be the best mom you can be, you need to be exactly who you are and be ok with it. #motherhood #mother #mom #goodmom #singlemom #parent #parenting #goodparenting #singlemomtips #parenttips Connect with Heidi! In todays episode Allana Chris joins us to discuss human and sex trafficking. Allana Chris is the Founder and Executive Director of Little Tree Project, an anti-human trafficking organization headquartered in South Alabama with the mission of combating human trafficking through prevention, rehabilitation, and restoration. She has over 6 years of experience in the counter trafficking field conducting domestic and international rescue and aftercare services. Her experiences and conversations with survivors of modern slavery lead her to start Little Tree Project with a model that is survivor-driven and solution-focused, filling in the gaps expressed by survivors themselves. Little Tree is currently offering community awareness and prevention services, referrals to survivors, and more while they fundraise for their anticipated residential facility.  In this episode Allana provides us with incredible insight around sex and human trafficking. Among MANY things we discuss, she explains the two ways that traffickers have access to their victims...through hunting & fishing. 83 percent of these cases now originate from online. Every child /teen that has access to online is at risk of potentially having contact with one of these predators. Allana does a beautiful job not only discussing the risks, but what we can look for as parents, how we can protect our kids and how we can help protect others from potential harm. On this episode of Bear Grease Clay Newcomb talks with New York Times best selling author Steve Rinella and Dr. Dan T. Carter, professor emeritus at the University of South Carolina about black-listed book “The Education of Little Tree.” The book, an alleged semi-autobiographical story about a Cherokee boy growing up in southern Appalachia, was written by Forest Carter, which was the false identity of famed white supremicist, Ku Klux Klan chapter founder and speech writer for Governor George Wallace, Dan Carter. In part 1, Clay reflects on the honest, insightful, and empathetic context of the book and explores the nuance and dissonance of what to do with with art in light of an artist's beliefs. -- By E.E. Cummings -- Edward Estlin Cummings was born October 14th, 1894 and was a prolific American writer through poetry, books, stage plays, essays, and TWO autobiographical novels. Cummings was one of the pioneers of modern free-form poetry including the use of irregular lowercase spellings as a vessel of artistic expression. During the First World War Cummings enlisted into the Ambulance Corp through the American Field Service where he met fellow novelist and French literary translator William Slater Brown. The two were able to explore Paris for five weeks thanks to not receiving assignment due to a clerical error. During the war Cummings wrote his first novel, The Enormous Room, which was published in 1922 (just two years after this poem) and was lauded even by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Following the war, Cummings returned to Paris a number of times and even lived there for a short time. He continues to travel extensively through the rest of his life. E.E. Cummings passed away on September 3, 1962 at the age of 67. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patrick-fennell6/support

Hoooo boy. On this week's episode we tackle the sometimes entertaining, often problematic western movie classic, The Outlaw Josey Wales.  What we did not when picked this, and we don't think any of the filmmakers knew when they made it was the following. This curious movie was based on a book by a former member of the KKK, a man who wrote speeches for George McGovern, and was an ardent segregationist. The speeches and Klan activity he performed under the name Asa Carter. He called himself Forrest Carter, and took on the persona of a Cherokee when he penned his books about Josey Wales and later his false autobiography, The Education of Little Tree- a book that was selected to be featured in Oprah Winfrey's Book Club. It is unclear how much Eastwood and his writers knew about this sad history, but for us the movie's origin in Forrest Carter's racist pseudo-history was never far from our mind. We spend a lot of time talking about the strange popularity of Lost Cause Narrative in American cinema as we wonder at this strange film.
