Listen to Rick's Interview with The Denver Brass as they Presents: Rhapsody in Brass January 12, 2019 at 7:30pm Ticket HERE At The Ellie Caulkins Opera House at Denver Performing Arts Complex Personnel requirements are – only brass and percussion players of extreme talent, extreme passion and enthusiasm, and extreme love and respect of all humanity. Because we all share these traits, we have a powerful synergy directed at the creation of music that speaks to our Colorado public, music of all styles with extreme depth and breadth of emotion – from inspiration and joy to discovery and tears. Not only will you hear our unique original big band version of “Rhapsody in Blue,” with acclaimed NY soloist Steven Mayer, but you’ll also experience Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble’s original choreography to Leonard Bernstein’s sizzling “Three Dance Episodes” from the movie “On the Town,” which is set in NY City. AND, we’ve just completed a new music video of Colorado composer Charles Denler’s “Altitude 5280,” so we’re going to include this fantastic work along with a wonderful tribute piece to Aaron Copland. The easiest way to get tickets is to purchase them online. The ticketing for this concert is being done through AXS, and the webpage you need to go to is: www.axs.com/events/356690. You can learn more about the program and our guests on our website, denverbrass.org, or you can call the Denver Brass office at 303-832-HORN(4676). Overview Writes Bernstein, “It seems only natural that dance should play a leading role in the show On the Town, since the idea of writing it arose from the success of the ballet Fancy Free. ... The story of On the Town is concerned with three sailors on 24-hour leave in New York, and their adventures with the monstrous city which its inhabitants take so for granted.” The first episode is Dance of the Great Lover, in which the romantic sailor Gabey falls asleep on the subway and dreams of sweeping Miss Turnstiles off her feet; the effervescent music underlines Gabey’s naiveté as well as his determination. In the second episode, Pas de Deux, Gabey watches a scene, “both tender and sinister, in which a sensitive high-school girl in Central Park is lured and then cast off by a worldly sailor.” This is set to Lonely Town – one of Bernstein’s greatest tunes, worthy of his friend and mentor Aaron Copland in its air of reflective melancholy. The finale, Times Square Ballet is described by Bernstein as “a more panoramic sequence in which all the sailors congregate in Times Square for their night of fun.” Part of the action takes place in the Roseland Dance Palace, with music to match. The famous “New York, New York, it’s a helluva town” theme makes a cameo appearance.

Bonfils Blood Center is now Vitalant. It’s a new name uniting more than 125 nonprofit blood donation centers around the country, allowing your blood donation to have an even bigger impact. While donations typically drop during the busy holiday season due to busy schedules and the onset of cold and flu season, the need for donated blood does not. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion for everything from car accidents and other traumas to organ transplants, to treat blood disorders and many other medical treatments that don’t make news headlines. Winter weather conditions can also lead to more accidents and the need for blood. It’s the blood already on the shelf that helps in an emergency. That’s why it’s crucial to maintain a safe and ready supply at all times. It takes about 24 to 36 hours to process, test and distribute each blood donation before it is delivered to hospitals. While all blood types are needed, there’s always an elevated need for type O blood. Type O blood is often used for premature infants and trauma patients – when there’s not time to test the patient’s blood type. Platelet donors are also needed. Platelets are primarily used in the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy. The shelf life of platelets is only 5 days—while whole blood or red cell donations can last 42 days. Learn more about donation types and what might be right for you at https://www.vitalant.org/Donate/Types-of-Donation.aspx. Individuals who are as young as 16 years of age (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. It takes more than 3,000 blood donations each week to meet the needs of patients in our region and to be ready for unexpected events. As part of a 40-state network, your blood donation will go where and when it’s most needed at that moment, whether it’s across town or across the country. Through Jan. 13, everyone who donates at a Vitalant donation center or blood drive in our region will be automatically entered to win a four-night trip for two adults to Costa Mujeres, Mexico.Details are available here: CO: https://tinyurl.com/ybdgh8us RC: https://tinyurl.com/yd6at98g WY: https://tinyurl.com/ya8wbzrh As a special thank you, donors will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt, while supplies last: Learn more about how to transform lives with us at vitalant.org or 877-25-VITAL (84825)

Here is Rick's Interview with Famed, Verne Lundquist as talk about some of the greatest moments in sports history from the man who was there and they chat about his new book! Enjoy! ABOUT VERNE LUNDQUIST AND HIS BOOK PLAY BY PLAY: CALLING THE WILDEST GAMES IN SPORTS Verne Lundquist, or "Uncle Verne" as many know him, has one of the most recognizable voices, and faces, in sports. After more than 50 years in broadcasting,PLAY BY PLAY: Calling the Wildest Games in Sports - From SEC Football to College Basketball, The Masters, and More (William Morrow; Hardcover; October 9, 2018; $ 28.99) marks the first time "Uncle Verne" turns the spotlight on himself-recalling some of the most important, unbelievable, and even outlandish moments he's seen happen on the field, in the clubhouse, or otherwise over the last five decades. Written with Verne's familiar humor and flair, PLAY BY PLAY begins with the early days of his career as a sports anchor in Austin in 1963. He soon moved to Dallas, where he continued as an anchor and play-by-play announcer for the Cowboys in the 1970s, when the team dominated the game of football. Over the next fifty years, he covered innumerable sporting events for a variety of networks, most notably CBS Sports, which he first joined in 1982. He moved to Turner Sports in 1995 for three years, while continuing to cover figure skating for CBS. He returned to the network in 1998, and two years later he began his tenure as the beloved play-by-play announcer for SEC on CBS. Over the course of his time with CBS, he covered more than twenty different sports for the network. Verne has always seen himself as a teller of stories, and he doesn't hold anything back in PLAY BY PLAY as he takes readers behind the scenes of some of the most iconic moments in sports history, including: . Jack Nicklaus' legendary one-stroke victory at the 1986 Masters Tournament . Christian Laettner's buzzer beater in the 1992 NCAA Tournament, which sent the Blue Devils to the Final Four . Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 Winter Olympics . Tiger Woods' astounding comeback at the 2005 Masters Tournament . The "Year of the Upset" - the historic year when an unranked or lower-ranked team defeated a favorite 59 times over the course of the 2007 regular season, including teams lead by Tim Tebow (University of Florida) and Matt Flynn (LSU) . Tennessee-Alabama in 2009, when Terrence "Mount" Cody blocked two crucial kicks to bring home another Crimson Tide victory . The Kick Six Iron Bowl of 2013, where the Auburn Tigers delivered a shocking blow to the heavily favored University of Alabama Verne also remembers the friendships he's made along the way, and shares with readers personal, surprising anecdotes about his life both inside and outside the booth, including: . His lifelong fascination with radio, and the call that brought him into a radio booth for the first time (surprise: it had nothing to do with sports) . The small, but important, role he played as a KTBC-AM (Austin) employee on November 22, 1963 - the day JFK Jr. was assassinated . Why he initially viewed the SEC play-by-play gig as a demotion, and what made him realize it was actually the most significant assignment of his career . The conversations he had with Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach about his recurring concussions and how they might impact him down the line . The legendary broadcaster who convinced Verne to host Bowling for Dollars - and why . Why he disagreed with President Carter's decision to pull the U.S. out of the 1980 Moscow Olympics . His unlikely love affair with figure skating, and his longtime friendship with Scott Hamilton . Why he agrees with many that University of Alabama's Nick Saban is the greatest college football coach to date . The time he found himself in the middle of a near altercation between Bob Knight and Tommy Heinsohn . Happy Gilmore - how he came to be part of the famous film, and how he learned he was second choice to Pat Summerall . Why he feels so passionately about the Army-Navy game, and why he chose it as his final college football broadcast ABOUT VERNE LUNDQUIST VERNE LUNDQUIST began his remarkable broadcasting career at KTBC-TV in Austin, TX. He joined CBS Sports in 1982, and during his tenure he covered more than twenty sports for the network. Lundquist was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2007, and in May 2016 he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports at the 37th annual Sports Emmy Awards. He lives in Steamboat Springs, CO. "Verne Lundquist's legendary voice echoes throughout the annals of sports broadcasting. He is a timeless storyteller with a unique ability to make fans feel like they are sitting right next to him watching history, while at the same time almost not realizing he is even there. Verne is a friend, a Hall of Famer, and the soundtrack to so many unforgettable memories in sports history." -NICK SABAN, Head Football Coach, University of Alabama Crimson Tide "Uncle Verne made Saturdays better, he made the SEC better, and he made college football better. Thank you for sharing your story with sports fans everywhere. Readers are sure to be entertained by your powerful storytelling." -TIM TEBOW, Heisman Trophy Winner and New York Times bestselling author "I have never known any other broadcaster who touches my dear friend Verne Lundquist's heart, mind, and talent. My many years of sitting to his right were the very best in my television career. Class, integrity, knowledge, and experience put him in a class by himself. A storyteller telling his story. Doesn't get much better than that!" -SCOTT HAMILTON, 1984 Olympics Men's Figure Skating Gold Medalist

Rick's interview with Dan Puleio as we learn about the USS Colorado. Enjoy! Governor Hickenlooper to receive a museum quality model of the USS Colorado (SSN 788) for display at the state’s Capitol In ceremonies to be conducted at the West Foyer of the state’s Capitol, Wednesday 18 July 9:00 am, Governor John Hickenlooper will receive a museum quality model of the Navy’s newest nuclear submarine, the USS Colorado (SSN 788). A once-in-a-lifetime event, this model will then be placed on permanent display at the state’s Capitol. The model will be presented by members of the state’s USS Colorado Commissioning Committee, chaired by retired Navy Captain John “JJ” Mackin; the Commanding Officer of the USS Colorado, Cmdr. Reed Koepp; and the model maker, retired Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Jon Sorensen. State Senator Kevin Lundberg (District 15) is credited with initiating this offer with the Governor and is anticipated to attend the ceremony. This presentation celebrates the culmination of six years construction in which the state has developed a close “namesake ship” relationship with the crew and citizens of Colorado. During this period crewmembers have visited the state on 12 occasions, speaking to students on the practical application of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) principles in the conduct of ship’s operations, and acting as ambassadors of good will with many a civic organization. This capitol ship of the U.S. Navy was commissioned into Naval service in ceremonies conducted in Groton, Conn. 17 March 2018. The Governor also attended and was a platform speaker at that ceremony. USS Colorado is the fourth ship to carry the name “Colorado” and is the 15th Virginia Class submarine to become part of the U.S. Navy. It has been more than 70 years since a Colorado namesake has sailed, and we as Coloradans are proud to embrace the ship, her crew and this close relationship. As the most modern and sophisticated attack submarine in the world, she can operate in both littoral and deep ocean environments and presents combatant commanders with a broad and unique range of operational capabilities. USS Colorado (SSN 788) is a flexible, multi-mission platform designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, delivery of special operations forces, strike warfare, irregular warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and mine warfare. About the model maker: Retired Navy Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Jon Sorensen, has been a Master Marine Model Artist in excess of 50 years. His work is integral to the famous Boettcher Collection, with tall ship models on permanent display at the Brown Palace Ship’s Tavern and the Governor’s Mansion. Jon will be in attendance and, as with the other principal speakers, is available for interviews. More information about the USS Colorado: https://usscoloradocommittee.org More information about the previous USS Colorado ships: https://usscoloradocommittee.org/history/.

Rick talk to Houston Conway as we learn about some things going on at Challenge America. Enjoy! CHALLENGE AMERICA "At Challenge America we have made it our mission to connect service members, veterans and their families to the resources they need to live the lives they earned and deserve. From the beginning, we set out to challenge the status quo by designing and scaling innovative, evidence-based solutions to the needs of the military community - no matter where they live. By leveraging technology, creative arts and community solidarity, we are challenging America to think differently about how we serve our military. We are building community through everything that we do. Our Military Sisterhood Initiative, for example, is forging a national peer support network for women of the military. A collaboration with WINC: For All Women Veterans, this initiative provides a safe space where more than 2 million military sisters can connect and support one another. We are leveraging technology and innovation to connect military members to critical resources. Our National Resource Locator tool boasts more than 220,000 service providers searchable by keyword and zip code. Moreover, the Makers For Heroes program features teams of designers, developers and engineers built around a specific need of an injured veteran, all working together to create innovative, life-changing solutions. We then share these solutions through an open-source platform in order to make them accessible to thousands of veterans and other facing similar challenges. We believe in healing through the arts. We design unique Music Therapy Retreats that help veterans struggling with PTSD to cope with the trauma of their military experience. We also host a National Exhibit of Veteran Art to encourage veteran artists from a variety of media to continue their craft while also generating public awareness of and support for the military healing arts. Ultimately, we believe that community not charity is the answer. Working together we can ensure that a new generation of veterans, service members and their families will have access to the community support and integrated resources they need. Now is the time. The challenges are great but the possibilities are greater. Thank you for accepting the challenge!"

Rick interview's his friend and author Patrick O'Donnell as they talk about his new book "The Unknowns". Enjoy! Patrick K. O'Donnell, national award-winning author of Washington's Immortals, reveals the untold story behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in a searing narrative that thrusts the reader into the brutal heart of combat in the Great War, into the perilous, gas-filled trenches where men fought to the death with pistols, clubs, knives, and bayonets. When the Unknown Soldier was laid to rest in Arlington, General John Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI, selected eight of America's most decorated, battle-hardened veterans to serve as Body Bearers. He chose them for their bravery and to tell the larger story of America's role in World War I.
Enjoy Rick Crandall's interview with Jason Kleinhelter, he is an AHA volunteer and the parent of a child stroke survivor. He shares some of his personal story around stroke and some stroke information. Enjoy! May is American Stroke Month American Heart Association/American Stroke Association invites Denver to join Together to End Stroke® During American Stroke Month in May, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association encourages Colorado residents to join together to end the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. Despite striking more than seven million adults in the United States annually and being a leading cause of serious, long-term disability, globally, stroke is largely preventable and treatable. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg. Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, according to recent AHA/ASA Hypertension Guidelines, which redefine high blood pressure as 130/80 mm Hg. Eating healthfully, being active and, for some stroke survivors, following an aspirin regimen can help prevent another stroke. Education is also key when it comes to treating stroke. Immediate medical care is crucial to access life-saving treatment in many cases. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke® initiative, sponsored nationally by Medtronic, teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people to recognize the most common stroke warning signs and what to do if one occurs: · F - Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. · A - Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? · S - Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? · T - Time to call 911: If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately. Stroke facts: · About 800,000 (approximately 795,000) people in the U.S. have a stroke every year, with about three in four being first-time strokes. · Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. Every four minutes, someone dies of stroke. · Stroke is the number five cause of death in the U.S., killing more than 140,000 people a year (140,323) in 2015. That’s one in every 20 deaths. · Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and the leading preventable cause of disability. Stroke, or vascular dementia, is also a leading cause of memory loss. · 80 percent of strokes can be prevented. · What’s good for the heart is good for the brain. The American Heart Association recommends following “Life’s Simple 7” to achieve ideal health: don’t smoke, be physically active, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy body weight, and control cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. Enjoy Rick's interview with Jim DeFelice and they talk about his laterest book about the Pony Express. American Sniper co-author Jim DeFelice celebrates the legends, separates fact from fiction, and probes the darker side of the Pony Express in his new book, WEST LIKE LIGHTNING: The Brief, Legendary Ride of the Pony Express. The Pony Express tied America together from the Mississippi River to California. It was the Internet - and the Space Shuttle - of its time. Wild Bill Hickock and Buffalo Bill Cody were associated with it. Americans from Missouri to California depended on it for news and mail. It was also an audacious get-rich quick scheme - an attempt to monopolize freight, transportation, and financial services through half the country. It involved a swindle of hundreds of thousands of dollars, bribes to government officials, and the occasional loss of life, an ear or other body part. Congressmen and at least one shady banker got rich off it, albeit illegally. The only thing standing in its way were 1,500 miles of desert, impassible mountains, hostile Indians, sociopathic killers and religious fanatics. Had the scheme behind it succeeded, the credit card we carry today, would have a Pony logo on it. We’d be making mortgage payments to the Pony Bank. Instead, those honors go to its chief rivals: American Express and Wells Fargo. WEST LIKE LIGHTNING retraces the Pony Express trail, figuratively and literally, from St. Joseph, Missouri, to San Francisco, California, with myriad stops in between to talk about Western expansion, Native Americans, the effects of gold and silver rushes, Mormons, railroads, the telegraph, and the bloody conflict that tore the nation apart even before the cannons fired on Fort Sumter. About the author: Jim DeFelice is the co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller American Sniper, the New York Timesbestsellers American Wife and Code Name: Johnny Walker, Omar Bradley: General at War. He has also written a number of acclaimed thrillers, including the Dreamland series with Dale Brown.
Great News from Tom Hill with The George Town Loop. So much fun for the whole family. Don't miss out and enjoy the interview!

On New Year’s Eve 2017, as most of the Denver metro area was preparing to ring in 2018, Deputy Zack Parrish of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department was part of a team responding to a disturbance call that became an ambush. Deputy Parrish was killed and four other officers and two civilians were wounded. Within four weeks two additional Colorado Deputies would lose their lives in action. It is the largest loss of Colorado law enforcement lives in that short a time span in over 100 years. Now, several weeks later, it seems everyone has moved on after sharing Thoughts and Prayers, but what about the law enforcement community? We decided to find out in a candid conversation with men and women who are closest to it and that discussion, titled “A Blue Perspective”. We had the chance to sit with four local law enforcement leaders to share their insights. Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz; Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock; Police Psychologist Dr. Sara Garrido and Aurora Police Sgt. Mike Pitrusu give a look into department morale, how their approach to policing has changed, care of officers and their families and how the community has supported them. It seemed important to pick the conversation up and I’m crazy proud that we have an opportunity to do that here.

Stroke Survivor, Cyclist, AND U.S. Paralympian. When Billy was 15 years old he was diagnosed with a rare and life threatening brain abnormality that required surgery. Doctors mentioned to Billy that a stroke could be a side effect of my surgery and two short years later, at the age 17, he suffered from a stroke. The stroke was unique in that it was a slow and regressive process. Every morning he woke up with a new symptom. One day it was not being able to tie his shoes, or brush his teeth, and eventually he couldn’t walk. Doctors couldn't say if the stroke was going to stop or what physical condition he would be left in. After four weeks of symptoms it stopped and left him with his full left side neurologically paralyzed. His full and active life changed right there in that moment. In 2011 Billy got on a bike while attending a Para-triathlon camp. He decided to dedicate his life to training as a cyclist for the Paralympics. In July of 2016, he secured the top overall spot among male two wheel upright cyclists, and grabbed his ticket to Rio de Janeiro. Billy competed in three events during the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro—two on a track and one on the road. He aspires to be a four-time Paralympian, competing not only in 2020 but also in 2024 and 2028 and believes that this stroke has been a gift in his life to enable him to be stronger than he ever imagined. INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY THURSDAY, MARCH 16th HIDDEN FIGURES The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race BY MARGOT LEE SHETTERLY Imagine the first scientists and engineers trying to send rockets—and eventually people—into space. With no electronic computers, they relied on an elite group of mathematicians capable of doing the most challenging calculations by hand, calculations that would launch men into space and forever expand our knowledge of the universe. Among these “human computers” were the black women whose genius for numbers made space exploration and travel possible. They’re finally introduced to America in Margot Lee Shetterly’s HIDDEN FIGURES: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. Now available in paperback, the book was an instant New York Timesbestseller upon its release in September 2016. It’s no surprise that this story was adapted for film even before the book was finished. It’s the inspiring yet largely unknown true story of the African-American female mathematicians at NASA whose work that helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space. Ironically, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were responsible for some of NASA’s greatest successes at a time when Jim Crow laws ensured NASA remained segregated. HIDDEN FIGURES is a story that combines the rich intersection of the civil rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the movement for gender equality. Margot Lee Shetterly is the perfect person to write it. A journalist and independent researcher, she is also the daughter of one of NASA’s first black engineers. Her insider’s knowledge, direct access to NASA executives and the women featured in the book lend it a depth and perspective that goes beyond mere research. HIDDEN FIGURES draws on extensive research, oral histories, personal recollections, interviews, and articles from the era to create an incredible picture of never-before-seen history. Now available in trade paperback and soon to be a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Kirsten Dunst, and Kevin Costner, with a soundtrack by Pharrell ABOUT THE AUTHOR: MARGOT LEE SHETTERLY is a writer who grew up in Hampton, Virginia, where she knew many of the women in Hidden Figures. She is an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow and the recipient of a Virginia Foundation of the Humanities grant for her research into the history of women in computing. She lives in Charlottesville, VA. DreamsTimes
