In this episode, Tim chats with psychologist and theologian Richard Beck about his book The Shape of Joy, which explores the idea that much of modern misery stems from a life turned inward—and that joy comes when we shift our attention beyond ourselves. Drawing on ancient theology, modern psychology, and lived experience, Richard challenges the dominance of a belief-centric, self-focused faith and invites us into a more outward-facing spirituality. He unpacks the difference between therapeutic introspection and the kind of excessive rumination that often leaves us stuck, and offers a vision of spiritual practices that open us to the world, to others, and to the divine. After the interview, Nomad hosts Tim and Anna reflect on how Richard's insights resonate with their own journeys—particularly their experiences of rumination, mental health, the role of spiritual practices, and the inward/outward tension in modern life. Alongside City Gate Church, we were lucky enough to have author, speaker and professor of psychology Richard Beck join us to talk about his new book 'The Shape of Joy' and to answer some questions. At around 43 minutes, Richard begins responding to audience questions - these were not picked up on the recordings but Richard was asked about what humility looks like, whether we need introspection in order to become more outward looking, the risks of humility and the contrast between joy and suffering. He is introduced by Gwyn Davies from City Gate and the evening was rounded off by Dave Steell from One Church. You can join in our services by visiting us in person at One Church Brighton, Florence Road, Brighton, or by heading to our YouTube channel at YouTube.come/onechurchbrightonchannelIf you'd like to know more about One Church Brighton, head to onechurchbrighton.org, or, if you'd like to get in touch with us, email info@onechurchbrighton.org.

They discuss liberal critics' focus on the fascistic style of the current right, how the recent “rise” of the right is more of a political dealignment occurring in both parties, whether Trump has an ideology and the role of ideas in the Trump administration, the pitfalls of trying to cohere such an incoherent figure, the effect of long election cycles on liberal commentators, and whether Trump is just a symptom of a political rupture that can't be reduced to a single figure.     Read Richard's piece in n+1, “Fret, Hedge, React: On reading the right.” Learn more about your ad choices. In a world where mental health issues and loneliness are at an all-time high, it's more important than ever to find ways to cultivate joy, community, and meaning in our lives. Many of us feel trapped within ourselves, struggling to find a way out of our own negative thoughts and emotions. Author and psychologist Richard Beck (Hunting Magic Eels) argues that we are struggling because our shape is currently "curved inward." We are self-focused, self- absorbed, ruminative. We're trapped inside ourselves. And we're definitely not happy or filled with joy. So how do we control our egos and ambition when those drives have been useful to us in the past? How do we engage our imagination and our faith? In his latest book, The Shape of Joy, Beck offers a powerful argument for how we can break free and rediscover the transcendent and the sacred. Beck argues that to find true joy and fulfillment, we need to understand the importance of "curving outward" and moving beyond the self to encounter true lovingness. Drawing from the principles of positive psychology, Beck explores concepts like gratitude, mindfulness, ego volume, and the small self to provide readers with a road map toward a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life. Whether you're struggling with mental health issues, yearning for a deeper connection with your faith, or simply seeking greater happiness and fulfillment, The Shape of Joy will offer you an inspiring vision for a better future.Follow Richard onhttps://richardbeck.substack.com/abouthttps://experimentaltheology.blogspot.com/Interview OutlineTell us a bit about your background and why you decided to write this book. The Shape of Joy has 3 main parts, let's briefly touch on the concept of what you mean by “curved inward”?The second part is entitled “turning away” can you give us a brief understanding of this concept? The last part gets into being “curved outward” , why do you think this will be beneficial for people to understand? How have you personally benefitted from writing this book?

Chad Myers and I talk about the latest piece from The Embassy - The Good People and The Bad People. Here is an excerpt:About four or five years ago, a friend gave me a copy of Richard Beck's book Unclean: Meditations on Purity, Hospitality, and Mortality. In this book, Beck explores how we view concepts like purity and contamination in our culture (and other cultures) and how that transfers to our view of people. Often, the people we tend to reject are those who move us to disgust. Our rejection of them is partly a reflection of that disgust. Beck asks us to imagine a glass of juice into which he drops a cockroach and stirs it around. After removing the bug, do we want the juice? Almost everyone would say no. But Beck, citing the work of Psychologists Paul Rozin and April Fallon, shares that after the juice is filtered in a way that ensures all traces of the cockroach have been removed - even if the juice is boiled after filtering - most people refuse to drink the juice. It has been contaminated for us, it has failed the purity test in a way that is permanent. It is an example of a kind of fear of contamination that comes from a reaction of disgust. Disgust and fear can be related - we fear coming into contact with what disgusts us. It is also an example of what is called negativity dominance. A small amount of the negative dominates and contaminates the larger amount. It doesn't matter if it is a 12 ounce glass of juice or a gallon, or if it is a small or a large bug, the result is the same. The clean juice doesn't counteract the bug, instead, it is contaminated in its entirety. As I said, I read Beck's book about four or five years ago but pulled it off my shelf to take another look after receiving a text from another friend. He sent me a link to an interview of comedian Tim Dillon by CNN's Elle Reeve. In his text, he described as the hour and ten minute long interview as “one of the more painful interviews I've ever witnessed.” Of course I watched the whole thing. Painful is not a bad description, I thought it had a bit of a train-wreck quality. Maybe I shouldn't have, but I found it fascinating.Dillon is a successful and popular comedian with a successful and popular podcast. He is a bit hard to pin down. I think that is a good thing, more of us should be a bit hard to pin down. I'll come back to that. Dillon is gay, irreverent, irreligious (I believe), a liberal of sorts politically, but heterodox, eclectic in his thinking. As such, he has been critical of positions taken by the right and the left, politically and culturally. He has been critical of positions I hold. I forgive him this indiscretion because he is very funny.I know nothing about Reeve aside from this interview. On the other hand, the interview was an hour and ten minutes long and I watched all of it. In my reading, Reeve represented a stance that is all too familiar in our culture - and I don't just mean it is reflected in the media, though it is prominent there. It seems to be an assumption underlying many of our interactions, social media or conversations or whatever, regarding any number of topics related to the culture and politics.Reeve's assumption, underlying far more than half of her questions, is that there are good people and bad people. She repeatedly asked Dillon about trends in comedy, in the podcast universe, in politics that had a very similar theme. There are good people and bad people, Reeve clearly assumed herself to be one of the good people, and assumed it is the job of the good people - be they comedians, podcasters, journalists, or politicians, to expose the bad people as bad. She never attempted to make the case for this assumption, she never argued for it, it was, to her, unquestioned. This assumption manifested itself in many ways, but most prominently, Reeve considered some of Dillon's podcast guests to be bad and wanted Dillon to do more to expose their badness. She also seemed to bemoan the reality of podcasters in general talking to politicians without asking them “are you bad?”I don't have an opinion about the podcasts that she asked about - I haven't heard any of them. But I think this good people / bad people assumption is behind much of our cultural division and, quite frankly, makes us dumber. As Dillon was pushing back on her assumption, Reeve said, “these are not my ‘are you bad?' questions”, to which Dillon replied, “we are all bad.” Reeve then attempted to make a soft case that Dillon was bad, in a ‘if I was going to make the case, it would look like this' sort of way. I think she thought, and wanted it to be clear to us, that she thought Dillon was one of the bad people (and she was doing her good people duty by pointing it out).Dillon's response that we are all bad, though probably he is not aware of it, has a grounding in Christian theology. We are all flawed, we are all broken, we all need redemption. We should not sit in judgment, certainly not in condemnation, of others. The good people / bad people assumption (again, it is not argued for, it is simply assumed) generally means that I assume the good people position. I am joined by the people who are “like me”, the other “good people.” I or we are in a position to judge, to condemn, the badness of others. But I don't need to be too self-critical. I am one of the good people.I'm not naive, I am aware that some people seem to do a higher percentage of bad things than others. However, the proposition that my own percentage is 0 or so low that it has no real effect in the world is worse than naive. Moreover, even people who allegedly fit into the bad category may be right in this or that particular case, they may say something true that I should hear. Which I won't if I make it the hallmark of the good person never to listen to the bad people. Which I also won't if I think any contact with the bad people contaminates me permanently. I must stay away, I must not platform, I must condemn - in order to maintain my purity as one of the good people. After all, the smallest exposure to the impurity of the bad people threatens to contaminate me entirely. One of the results of this assumption, painfully obvious in the interview, is a lack of genuine curiosity about other people - especially if we have already classified them as good or bad. Reeve lacked curiosity about what Dillon would say in response to her and, therefore, seemed to miss much of what he was saying. Or she didn't interact with it, choosing instead to pursue the good/bad dichotomy. As I said, Dillon is a bit hard to pin down, a bit of a contradiction or mystery that I find interesting, but that is lost on Reeve, or on anyone else who is only interested in the moral classification. When we put ourselves in this position, we stop listening, we stop being challenged, we stop refining our own thinking. We are far poorer for it and so is our culture. Just to be clear, I find myself agreeing with Dillon sometimes and disagreeing with him maybe a bit more of the time. But if I allow myself to listen, I get to know something about someone else, I learn something about what they think, and, with Dillon, I often laugh.Check out the whole piece. Reacher and Kohl, along with Anthony Frasconi, intercept one of Quinn’s buyers, a Syrian businessman, Safwan Qasim, whom they force to assist in capturing Quinn. Having evidence to prosecute him, Reacher allows Kohl to arrest Quinn. Quinn instead kidnaps Kohl. In his search for her, Reacher finds Frasconi dead in a house, and later finds Kohl’s bloody body hanging in a cabin; Quinn brutally murdered her. Reacher finds Quinn and shoots him in retaliation, apparently killing him. Back in the present, Zachary sends Reacher to a factory where they have located Doll’s laptop and where Duffy is. When Duffy finds Eliot dead and the bodyguard has escaped, she calls Reacher to tell him so and get him out of the house, but Reacher formulates a plan involving Villanueva. Duffy cuts the power and Reacher uses Villanueva as bait to kill the bodyguard. Back at the house, Zachary informs Reacher that Annette, the maid, was an ATF infiltrator and that Paulie has killed her. Reacher tells Duffy that several Feds are spying on them and that Quinn is dealing in firearms, not drugs. The next morning, Zachary informs Reacher that they have been summoned to a factory. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Beck, senior writer at n + 1 Magazine, to discuss his recent book Homeland: The War on Terror in American Life. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's tariffs, Trump's cabinet drama, Trump's legal woes, Biden's gift to Trump, deaths under Texas' abortion ban, Missouri's ban on trans care for minors, Charlotte's airport workers' strike, bird flu, and Mississippi's runoff election, before diving a little deeper into Biden's plan to expand Medicare and Medicaid to include weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Trump's tariff plan, and problems in the Trump cabinet. Richard Beck then joins, jumping right into his particular perspective for the war on terror as a teenager at the time of 9/11, unpacking the bipartisan normalization of the shift to a domestic surveillance state backing a globalized project of enforced American hegemony, and looking at how the Democratic Party (under Obama), in particular, worked to simultaneously present the Bush administration as an aberration, while bureaucratizing, rationalizing, and, ultimately, reinforcing the exact project that was supposedly so absurd. After briefly touching on the window Occupy provided to the Obama administration's blatant rejection of a progressive movement outside of the political establishment, Beck steps back, diving into the overwhelming media backlash to any sort of critical lens on US hegemony, with a direct line between the “owning the libs” politics of today and the Limbaughian obsession with making fun of the progressive identifiers of the nineties and aughts, alongside a direct tie-in to the bipartisan militarization of American society, be it tanks in police departments, an influx of Humvees on the street, or the catapulting of “SpecOps”-esque comic movies to the forefront of US culture, and how those elements worked to further legitimize the amoral (and often actively immoral) maintenance of US hegemony across the globe. Wrapping up, Richard, Sam, and Emma briefly touch on the particular role of oil in the War on Terror, and why it fails to actually explain the quest for American hegemony in an age of dwindling capitalist expansion, tackling the major role of the US plays well outside of petroleum reserves in an effort, more than anything else, to simply protect its impunity at the top of the global liberal order. Ep. 240 Richard Beck - The Shape of Joy

Shifting Culture

The conversation today gets at the heart of our modern mental health crisis. Richard Beck, author of the new book 'The Shape of Joy,' takes us into how our cultural obsession with introspection and the pursuit of self-esteem has undermined our wellbeing. He traces this back to key philosophical and psychological figures like Descartes and Freud, who ushered in this inward turn. He shows how this has led to excessive rumination, a fragile sense of self-worth tied to external achievements, and an inability to find true meaning and joy. But the real power of this conversation is in how Beck points us towards an alternative - a path of transcendence, of finding our identity and security in something greater than ourselves. He unpacks the psychological benefits of gratitude, awe, and spiritual connection. And he challenges us to move beyond just insight and self-analysis, towards more embodied, experiential ways of cultivating wellbeing. It's a rich discussion that gets at the heart of our modern malaise and points towards a more joyful and grounded way of being. A conversation worth diving into. Richard Beck (PhD) is Professor of Psychology and Senior Fellow of the Landon Saunders Center for Joy and Human Flourishing at Abilene Christian University. Richard also teaches in the Doctor of Ministry programs at Fuller Theological Seminary and Abilene Christian University. During his teaching career, Richard has been honored twice as ACU Teacher of the Year. No A.I. voices are ever used in the show.IN THIS EPISODE: The horror entertainment industry would make you think that Satan is everywhere, controlling world leaders, possessing church pastors, inhabiting the bodies of kids who play with Ouija boards, even somehow controlling your children's dolls or other toys… all in the name of the Lord Lucifer. Ironically, Satan is only mentioned a handful of times in the bible, despite what you've been led to believe by Hollywood. The image of Satan we typically envision is actually not from the bible at all, but from a poem. Most Satanists, despite the clever name, don't openly worship the devil. And while I do believe in Satan and the danger he poses – I believe we are giving him way too much credit for some things – especially some of the conspiracy theories people believe, or blaming him for when we do bad things, (i.e., “the devil made me do it!”). That being said, there are some areas that you have to wonder if perhaps he truly did place his crooked finger upon in order to insert his evil influence. What does Satan look like? What's the meaning of 666? Do people really kill in the name of Satan? Are some places or objects somehow under a Satanic influence? Research shows ( Darkness to Light White Paper on Prevalence) that one in seven girls and one in 25 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18. Many by people they know, love and trust. Evidence of abuse is not always obvious and children and adolescents do not report they have been abused for many reasons. Today we are going to lift the silence on childhood sexual abuse to offer an understanding and response to its impact. Toward this goal we are so fortunate to be joined by RICHARD BECK, LCSW, BCD, CGP, FAGPA an experienced psychotherapist with expertise in treating trauma working with individuals, couples and groups. Richard has not only responded to cases of sexual abuse, as a Senior Lecturer at the Columbia University School of Social Work has taught “ Treatment of Childhood Sexual Abuse” over twenty-four times. In our discussion today, Richard Beck will be addressing the reasons victims most often don't report the abuse, the consequences of the Childhood Sexual Abuse on children and adolescents, the signs that might alert caregivers that abuse may have occurred and the rupture of trust and self-blame when a child or teen is victimized by a coach, physician or priest revered by the family.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Daniel J. Galvin, professor of political science at Northwestern University, to discuss his recent book Alt-Labor and the New Politics of Workers' Rights. Then, she's joined by Richard Beck, senior writer at n+1 Magazine, to discuss his recent piece in the New Left Review entitled "Bidenism Abroad." First, Emma runs through updates on Nikki Haley's endorsement of Donald Trump, Israel's continued victimization in the face of committing genocide, US support for Israel, Senate politics, Justice Alito, Anti-trust action, UK elections, and more, before parsing through Fox News' coverage of the FBI's capacity to USE DEADLY FORCE AGAINST DONALD TRUMP, per typical procedure. Professor Daniel Galvin then joins, first contextualizing what these “alternative labor” organizations are, with networks like worker centers, community organizations, and regional alliances providing particularly vulnerable workers in the vast, unionized sectors of the US economy an avenue for workplace and labor justice, be it wage theft, discrimination, sexual harassment, or labor conditions, though generally focusing on rectifying wrongs that have already occurred. Expanding on this, Professor Galvin explores how these organizations have begun shifting to a more proactive approach, advocating for state and local employment and labor policy to chip away at the severe power imbalance in the US economy, finding success in bluer districts and states, while meeting much more institutional (and financial) opposition elsewhere. After walking through the slow and steady undermining of FDR's New Deal system of labor protections after the Second World War, and the shift away from collective bargaining to minimal employment protections, Galvin wraps up by assessing the devastating impact employer exploitation like wage theft actually has on the US economy, resulting in billions taken from the lowest-wage workers. Richard Beck and Emma then reflect on Biden's Foreign Policy platform on the campaign trail, centering a “foreign policy for the middle class” and a narrative of “Democracies versus Autocracies,” which particularly worked with his early policies of support for Ukraine and withdrawal from Afghanistan, respectively, and look to the main individuals – Anthony Blinken and Jake Sullivan – responsible for shaping this platform. After expanding on the evolution of Biden's foreign policy during his first few years in office, Richard and Emma begin to explore how October 7th (and Israel's following ethnic cleansing of Gaza) completely upended these commitments, laying bare the failures of the autocracy-democracy binary, and reinserting the US into an expensive quagmire in the Middle East, all while relying on the policies bequeathed unto him by Donald Trump's far-right administration. Next, Beck looks to the parallels in Biden's approach to China, continuing the economic warfare established under Trump with major EV tariffs and an ongoing attempt at a TikTok Ban, before exploring the increasingly precarious status of US hegemony over the last few decades, and wrapping up by assessing the future of Biden's inactive and defensive leadership as the 2024 election draws near. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they highlight a new EmMajority Report intro song, Sam's evolution into a cruiser (as in… the ships), and talk with Sky from Florida about the ideologies behind hating student debt-forgiveness. A Syrian Student from Germany dives into the response to the ICC's arrest warrant for Netanyahu, Mehdi Hasan and Ilan Pappé have an enlightening conversation on the future of Palestine and Israel, and Tulsi Gabbard doubles down on both her anti- and pro-war stances. Jesus began His ministry by stating a set of paradoxes that we call the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5. George focused on the first two (poor in spirit, mourning) and their relationship in our everyday lives to help us keep living from an open heart. SLIDES GEORGE'S READ IN OUR GATHERING When we describe God, we can only use similes, analogies, and metaphors. All theological language is an approximation offered tentatively in holy awe. That's the best human language can achieve.   -Richard Rohr, The Divine Dance We've substituted theological ideas for the experience of life; we are full of religious notions, but our great weakness is that for our hearts, there is no one there.   -A. W. Tozer, The Divine Conquest (1950) We've lost our capacity for enchantment, our ability to see and experience God as a living, vital presence in our lives.   -Richard Beck, Recovering An Enchanted Faith In A Skeptical World Opening your heart is moving to a place of understanding a deeper, wider, stronger, more enduring nature to life that is good. To open your heart is to get better and better at receiving the goodness of life as it flows toward you. -Rob Bell

What does Christmas mean? Richard Beck says that the arrival of Jesus means we come finding ourselves already loved. What does this simple truth mean for us today?   "Incarnation" by Richard Beck I arrived to find myselfalready loved. A forgiveness preceding, exceeding my first crime and my last. A prior mercy, a predestined grace. Anticipating my shame a welcome offered, a healing before the pain. I had imagined it to be my task to close the distance between us, to cross the chasm, scale the height. My fault dictating my duty, though futile and impossible. But I looked up hearing the angels sing to find You already here.

I discovered Richard Beck years ago much as he described. He and I were both in a progressive-evangelical phase. I probably found him through Rachel Held Evans who gathered many in this day of the Internet blogosphere. I resonated deeply with his blog and followed it closely.  When I rediscovered his blog recently I was amazed how similar he was to me again. I couldn't imagine how we had been tracking together and when he decided to start the Mental Illness series I had to reach out. Reading important books can change the way we interact with the people around us. In this episode of The Rugged Truth Podcast, I share my 5 best reads of 2022. These books have shaped and changed me in significant ways. They could do the same for you! Listen now! God's Truth can endure any attack and answer any question. It's rugged. Our grasp of God's Truth has to be just as rugged in a skeptical culture. On The Rugged Truth Podcast, Dr Bryan Fergus answers real questions that real people are asking about real life with God as he helps listeners develop a rugged faith. The Rugged Truth Podcast is committed to helping people develop a biblical worldview through in-depth analysis of how God's Word impacts our understanding of the issues of the day. Complex theological and doctrinal questions are answered with Scripture and common sense reasoning. The result is a firm grasp of God's truth that allows followers of Jesus to both comprehend and defend their faith in today's skeptical culture. About Dr Bryan Fergus Dr Bryan Fergus is driven by a passion to teach God's Word in clear and applicable ways and to train up the next generation of Christian pastors and leaders. He currently pursues his passion by serving as an Adjunct Professor at Phoenix Seminary, Calvary Chapel University, and Arizona Christian University. He is also the Lead Educator at The Rugged Truth. Bryan Fergus served in vocational pastoral ministry for 32 years. He has also been teaching courses on the Bible, theology, ancient near eastern history and pastoral leadership at Christian universities and seminaries on four continents for the past 21 years. Dr Fergus earned his Doctor of Ministry degree through Phoenix Seminary, writing a dissertation entitled The Intersection of Analytic Theology and Catechesis. He is a voracious reader and writer with new book projects and online content coming out often and regularly. Mike Goldsworthy - Perhaps the American success ethos that drives us to do more, achieve more and work harder as we defy our limits is actually not the best way to live. And perhaps there is a gift and a unique grace that we receive in the recognition, embrace and acceptance of our limits. We look at this through the lens of Hebrews 2:14-15, Matthew 5:3, and some thoughts from Richard Beck in his book Slavery of Death. Today's teaching comes from Mike Goldsworthy, long time friend of SBCC. Mike is a speaker, resourcer, and guide with a passion for connecting like-minded churches and leaders. He also has a podcast, space for faith: re-imaginging the church for our current moment, and started the Post-Evangelical Collective which met here at SBCC last fall.
