The Florida Keys is a perfect road trip destination for families, or friends. This week Kim and Tamara talk all about their recent trip to the Florida Keys and Key West, with stops in Key Largo and Key West. ON THE PODCAST 00:30 - Talking with Kim and Tamara about their time in the Florida Keys 02:31 - Getting to and around the Keys 10:45 - Key Largo - Baker’s Cay Resort 17:35 - Playa Largo Resort 23:00 - Islamorada 30:45 - Driving to Key West 38:20 - Stock Island 42:44 - Places to eat 50:58 - Food Tour and Boat Tour 58:15 - Sunset Celebration 1:02:00 - Island Adventure Tour 1:09:30 - Coming up next TIPS FOR VISITING THE FLORIDA KEYS Keep in mind when you are planning your trip to the Keys that you are going to be driving down through different Keys, you will run into quite a bit of traffic since you will mostly be driving through one lane roads and small beach towns with lights and little shops. The Baker’s Cay Resortin Key Largo is a great resort for families or friends. They have great views and while the beach and pool are not close to each other to enable you to easily go back and forth, they are both very nice. This resort offers a complimentary glass of champagne at sunset every night, nicely decorated public spaces, and offers water sport adventures that you can easily access on their dock. Playa Largo Resortbeach seems to be a bit narrower and part of this you can only access they water by a set of stairs. They also offer a special treat of marshmallows you can roast on bonfires at sunset. The resort pool is nicer than Baker's Cay and right on the beach. If you are at all interested in feeding fish, a great area to visit is Robbies on Islamorada. They have a restaurant is called Hunger Tarpon and you can pay a fee to go out on the docks and buy a bucket of fish to feed the tarpon. Just go early because the parking lot gets very full. Robbies also offers a bunch of different water sports. Driving from Key Largo to Key West will probably take you about five hours with a few stops, including lunch. The Perry Hotel on Stock Island is a bit outside of downtown Key West, but offers free parking and a shuttle downtown. You can also rent scooters and you will find that you will be able to find decent parking with them. Parking in Key West is challenging. For a car, you will find that there are a lot of residential only parking spot that you could get ticketed if you there. The lot parking can also get a bit expensive as well. Key West Food Toursprovided a fabulous tour around the area. The tour guide Rose was fantastic! Mallory Square offers a sunset celebration that starts about an hour before sunset and they have performers to watch as well as bars you can go and have a drink that are all right around the square. You should keep in mind that people will stake out spots to see the sunset early on, so you may want to get there early and do the same otherwise you will be behind a crowd and you will need to hold your camera up over others to get good shots. The Fury Island Adventure Touroffers a fantastic experience where you can snorkel, walk around a sandbar, kayaking, and even paddle board. This tour offers a great variation of activities all in one great boat trip. Upstairs, as the name suggests, this is a great Key West restaurant with a great view and great food. Close to Mallory Square in Old Town, The Roof Top Cafe has been a Key West favorite for 30 years. You can't go wrong
Mallory Square has long been a favorite Key West spot for viewing sunset. It's beloved by both tourists and locals. What started out as a gathering for hippies doing illegal activities, and the City trying to stop it, turned into a cultural preservation event. The daily sunset celebration at Mallory Square has turned into a festival with food vendors, performers, clowns, acrobats, and artisans. It's the only festival in the Keys where the artists who are selling their wares are actually required to make them with their own hands. They have to be able to demonstrate the making of the craft to a jury of their peers to even qualify to be at the event. This event is known the world over, and traveling performers often come to spend "season" in Key West and perform on the pier. This nightly event is the only free event for families in Key West. If you're in Key West, you have to make plans to celebrate the sunset on the pier at least one night, if not more. Patronize the local artisans who work hard to produce beautiful crafts and great food. To learn more about the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square visit www.sunsetcelebration.org. From much of its early history, Key West stood in relative isolation due to the lack of regular mail service to the island, and the sporadic nature of the shipping supply channels which could easily be affected by storms and less than desirable weather. It wasn't until the end of the Civil War in this country that some enterprising businessmen decided to develop the undersea cable system to connect the US to other countries for Telegraph and Telephone calls. When the practicality of this type of communication was discovered, that's whenever people were on board to make it happen. The underwater cable system connecting Key West to Cuba officially began construction in 1867, the submarine cables were laid by boat crews in six different sections. The cable was laid in up to 1000 feet of water in the waters of the Florida Straights and connected Key West to Havana. There are several historic cable huts still visible around Key West. One of the more well preserved huts, sits near the Southernmost Point. Another less preserved example is able to be seen in the area of the Mallory Square dock. Some efforts have been made to preserve these historic cable huts. It wasn't until this underwater cable system was installed that the United States was finally able to be connected to another country for this type of communication. In 1867, after the first section was laid, Key West Mayor E.O. Gwynn and the Captain-General of Cuba Joaquin del Manzano exchanged greetings over the wire. Now that communication could be made with the outside world, it was quite expensive to actually utilize the service. Initially, Congress had limited the cost of a telegram to $3.50 cents for each 10 words. Imagine that! Eventually, the cost of a telegraph to Havana cost $4 in gold, by 1870. Additional underwater cable lines were added to the system in 1871, 1873, 1875, 1919 and 1927. At the height of the communications boom for Key West there were six different lines that connected the island to various locations. Between shipping mishaps, hurricanes and the harsh marine environment, the cables were constantly having to be repaired and replaced. The underwater cable system remained in use until the last segment connecting Key West to Havana failed in 1987. And it was today, December 15th, 1930, that the German cable ship Neptun started laying a new telephone cable to Cuba. The Key West end of the cable landed at the foot of Waddell Street. The cable was jointly owned by American Telephone and Telegraph Company and the Cuban Telephone Company. This was the fourth cable between Key West and Havana. The ship to two days to complete the cables to Havana. And that's what happened today in Key West history. Today in Key West History is brought to you by 43 Keys Media. Bill Welzien, pastor and evangelist from Key West, Florida continues to address the class about his evangelism. He gives a demonstration of his preaching of the gospel at Mallory Square. Consider the curiosity factor of his presentation. Explore the three fold use of the Law. The first use is that the Law is the basis for a civilized society. The second use is that the Law is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. The third use is that the Law is a guide to living holy lives. It is important to preach the Law before the Cross. People need to know why they need to be saved. Consider the venue for street preaching. What are strengths and differences between this type of preaching and open air preaching? In Job 9:2 we read, "Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be in the right before God?" Welzien notes that the easel is an outline, gives people something to look at, and gives a presence after the presentation is done.

It's hard to have a gloomy outlook when you live in Key West. Business at Mallory Square is crusing along as expected. There hasn't been a huge peak yet, but it will come. Christy shares how her online business is going and also gives a sneak peak into some of the guests she has coming on the podcast. This podcast is sponsored by http://www.teampodcast.com (Team Podcast). The one stop shop for "done for you" podcast support services.
After all the hoops Christy has jumped through to get her business where she needs it, now it is time to get into the grind. The crowds will eventually return to Mallory Square and Christy just has to stick with what she believes will work.
Christy could go broke giving out samples of her product, Cryopop at Mallory Square. The point is to make a living, so giving samples has to be targeted. Christy changed her targeting strategy by offering samples only to those who stopped and appeared curious about her product. While the overall sales for the night were not stellar, Christy did convert more of her samplers into buyers than on previous nights. Christy shares the results of her targeted strategy.
A week after the soft launch and Christy has learned one thing.......samples will be the key to her businesses success. She has given away nearly 500 Cryopop samples down at Mallory Square as she tried to build her business. Now she grapples with the issue of turning a large portion of the samplers into buyers. Because Cryopop is frozen, giving out samples is a challenge. It must be consumed immediately. If not, the impression of the product is terrible. At the same time, many will try and only some will buy. Now she has to figure out who the buyers are and who can be influenced to buy. This is going to become an experiment in human behavior. Follow Christy as she figures it out.
