Okay, so this our longest episode ever at over 3 hours, and EVERYBODY CRIES. Sorry, not sorry. Special bonus appearance by James Estrada at about the 1:30 mark. Special bonus Mexican box office discussion around 2:15. THIS EPISODE FEATURES A LOT OF CRYING. Andy doesn't remember to introduce the podcast. Trawling for sponsors: Magic Spoon, Mucinex, Tacos, or sex toys. CRYING PART 1: Brooke's niece Coco who passed away, her family history and her grandmother from Spain. Grief. The importance of when this movie came out—right in the middle of Trump and terrible things he was saying. The invisibility of Mexican representation in media. This gives us hope. “We Should All Be Feminists”by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. A clip from “The Danger of a Single Story” about her “single story” experience of Mexicans (clip begins at 8:25). This is like a giant hug specifically for Mexicans. Nailed a bunch of specific things like the humor and even the family interactions. The genesis of “so specific it's universal.” THE CHANCLA. All the characters are well-rounded, everyone gets to be right, everyone gets to be wrong. Grandma Imelda is amazing. Check out Chavela Vargas singing La Llorona and Paloma Negra. Andy is scared by La Llorona. Is “de la Cruz” as a name indicative of classism/ colonialism? Hummingbirds – fuck around and find out! Oaxacan spirit guardians and their depiction—GORGEOUS animation. Frida! Generational trauma. Can we NOT do the militarized border in our fantasy land? Disneyland is the same. A WILD JAMES ESTRADA APPEARS!!! We have a 1:1 conversation about Coco. We do more crying talking about James's grandparents. You can find James on Facebook at Nerdy at Home Dad or semaj_adartse on TikTok and Instagram. BOX OFFICE! MEXICAN BOX OFFICE and Mexican box office records! Studio notes. MORE HUMMINGBIRD TALK. Read: The Most Powerful Aztec God had the Hummingbird as his Spirit Animal. Mexico Lore: Hummingbirds. More about hummingbirds in culture. Kitt and Andy almost cry talking about their grandfather. Melissa is going to be on Yours, Mine and Theirs talking about BARFI! We're all trying to hold back the darkness these days, but the folks in these movies especially so. Tim takes quick stock of the most annoying child actors, then talks the dark circumstances surrounding the protagonists of Shane, Bringing Out the Dead, and Maria Full of Grace. A mysterious gunman, an ambulance driver, a drug mule all fighting to hold back the pain of the past and future. Plus one is Nicolas Cage.
On the latest episode of FORGOTTEN GEMS? we're traveling back to 2004 to check out Joshua Marston's much lauded (particularly for its lead performance by Catalina Sandino Moreno) drug smuggling drama MARIA FULL OF GRACE. But aside from that dynamite lead, does the film hold up to our older - and somehow even MORE cynical - eyes? And does it even matter? Lots of talk about the drug war, hypocrisy, and all that good stuff. Check it out! The post Episode 77 – Forgotten Gems? – Maria Full of Grace (2004) appeared first on Cinema Smorgasbord.
Dragon on the Couch: The Dragon watched the documentaries Strip Down, Rise Up (Netflix) as recommended by Berto and was not impressed, and The Smashing Machine (YouTube) and was scared for all involved. She also watched Local Legends (Rent on Amazon) and was excited about her text convo with the director. Berto on the Bed: Berto watched the supposed revenge movie M.F.A (Prime) and felt like it missed the mark. Jaime on his Phone: Our very special guest Jaime has been deep diving into the YouTube world of highly skilled metalworking. This week's deep dive is the 2004 Colombian-centered drama Maria Full of Grace (HBO).
This week we have a very special guest, the one, the only, STEFAN BROGREN aka Snake from Degrassi! Join us as we discuss Hilary Swank’s second Oscar win for the hugest downer of all time, Million Dollar Baby. Many argued it was too soon for her to nab her second trophy and with the fellow nominees, it’s not hard to understand why. Imelda Staunton’s moving performance in Vera Drake was definitely a contender and not just because Umbridge was actually a nice person for once. Annette Bening in Being Julia further proves that she’s always a bridesmaid and never a bride. Kate Winslet gave one of her best performances to date in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Jim Carey was snubbed!). And finally, Catalina Sandino Moreno for Maria Full of Grace becoming the first actress in a lead role to be nominated for a fully Spanish speaking role. Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest Stefen Brogren as we discuss who we thought should have won and why.
Join us for our 3rd episode where we introduce and recommend two very different films. Sit back and enjoy as we dive into a charming light hearted film and another that is dark and gritty. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Caitlin Ruppert is joined by former cell mate Qi Ricks to recap Episode 7 Season 2 of Life After Lockup!! Love After Lockup continued. This episode is titled, Con-Fessions and things are starting to heat up! Sarah has a classic front yard melt down while Michael does his usual bobbing and weaving of any responsibility for his actions. Brittany finds out her creepy pedophile baby daddy was going to maybe get custody of their children at one point. Andrea wears the chocker to choke all other chokers while suffocating her relationship. Brother Joey reaches long and far for a chair and an excuse for why Tony does what he does and who he does. And Shane chooses the most inappropriate place imaginable to tell Lacey he boinked a chick right before their wedding! That and all the rants and bits you could possibly want in a recap!
