Written and directed by Joe Carnahan, The Rip is the action thriller film starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. We break down all things corrupt cops, trust among friends, and complete and utter misdirection.
Another fun-filled episode of Nerds Talking! Lafayette and Carlos are back with the latest in entertainment news, sharp commentary, and plenty of laughs. This week, the nerds kick things off with the return of the One-Word Movie Game—you get three words, and you've got to name that movie. Play along and see if you can beat the hosts!Next up, the crew dives into a review of the Netflix crime thriller The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan. Starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Steven Yeun, the film follows a group of Miami cops who stumble upon a stash of millions in cash. As word of the seizure leaks out, paranoia sets in, trust erodes, and everyone starts questioning who they can really rely on. Is it a gripping crime drama or just another slick heist tale? The nerds break it all down. The conversation continues with a review of The Seven Dials, sharing early impressions, standout moments, and whether the series is worth sticking with. But before wrapping up, things take a turn into pure absurdity. The crew can't ignore the ridiculousness of Dr. Verma, who somehow struggles to answer a question that even a young child could handle. And then there's the king of snake-oil salesmen, Gavin Newsom, who also can't seem to give a straight answer to a straightforward question. Is it incompetence, avoidance, or something else entirely? One thing's for sure—the nerds have thoughts, and our society might just be broken.Tune in for laughs, memories, hot takes, and plenty of nerdy insight as Lafayette and Carlos bring humor and smiles to your day. Matt Damon produces and stars alongside Ben Affleck in the thrilling heist drama The Rip. The duo teamed up with writer-director Joe Carnahan to bring the script to life — inspired by true events from Miami Police Department's Tactical Narcotics Team. Damon shares how his public friendship with Affleck was good “baggage” to bring to their onscreen friendship, and his shock after hearing how much Affleck's Spanish had improved. The Oscar-winning actor also reflects on the trajectory of his early career, the highs and lows of being a Boston sports fan, and the profound gratitude he experienced while working with Christopher Nolan on the upcoming film The Odyssey. Skip Intro with Krista Smith is available on Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
The two lads star in 'The Rip'.Dave was joined by the stars of the new Netflix movie The Rip. He chats with Matt Damon, Steven Yeun, and Catalina Sandino Moreno, and also catches up with director Joe Carnahan.
Before we start talking movies, Megan has some news. Then: We often say on Spoilerpiece that movies we select to review end up being thematically related, even when we don't intend them to be. Well, not today, gang! THE CHORAL (5:50) and THE RIP (24:12) could not be less alike if they're directors (Nicholas Hytner and Joe Carnahan, respectively) made conscious decisions to make them live on opposite ends of the movie spectrum. Evan and Dave take on THE CHORAL (Megan had screener problems), an all-over-the-place drama about a chorus putting together a performance under the heavy cloud of World War I. Ralph Fieness is great. Everything else? Hmm... Then there's THE RIP (and if you forget what this flick is called, it will remind you), which all of us watched. This police thriller about some Miami PD cops seizing a giant stash of cartel money has some tense moments, but overall we didn't love it (even if we didn't hate it). Though we ackowledge Ben Affleck blows the roof off this one. Matt Damon? Not so much. Over on Patreon, we pay tribute to Rob Reiner and talk about A FEW GOOD MEN.

Before heading off to Sundance next week, Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy bring you ten new movie reviews. Erik looks at the anime adaptation of the text that inspired Edge of Tomorrow (All You Need Is Kill) and a Palestinian epic of family and loss that people need to see (All That's Left of You) while Steve checks out the latest film about family from the Dardenne Brothers (Young Mothers). On the documentary side there is the tale of a wrestler who was born with Crouzon's Syndrome (Standout: The Ben Kjar Story) and a two-parter on HBO Max about one of the absolute legends of comedy (Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!). Jodie Foster takes the lead again as a psychiatrist investigating her patient's death (A Private Life) and Amanda Seyfried leads with music as part of a shaky religious sect (The Testament of Ann Lee). Bad cops are at the center of the new film from the director of Lowlife (Night Patrol) and Matt Damon & Ben Affleck may also be at the center of Joe Carnahan's latest thriller (The Rip). Sweaty palms, bad decisions, and the creeping realization that the walls are closing in have always been Joe Carnahan's cinematic comfort zone, from the raw nerve of “Narc” to the adrenalized chaos of “Smokin' Aces.” With “The Rip,” Carnahan distills that obsession into its most claustrophobic form yet, a lean, pressure-cooker cop thriller that weaponizes procedure, grief, and mistrust by refusing to let anyone leave the room.Premiering January 16 on Netflix, the film follows a team of law enforcement officers tasked with counting a massive cash seizure inside a private home, only to realize the money has placed them squarely in someone else's crosshairs, turning routine protocol into a moral and physical siege where loyalty fractures and survival comes at a cost. The film stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and more.On this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo is joined by writer-director Joe Carnahan to discuss how “The Rip” grew out of deeply personal real-life experience, why confinement can be more terrifying than scale, collaborating with Damon and Affleck as producers, and why character-driven crime stories continue to pull him back more than any franchise machinery.

Zac is also set to appear in HOTEL TEHRAN, a new thriller from writer-director, Guy Moshe. In March 2023, Levi reprised his role as Shazam! in the Warner Bros. DC franchise, SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS. What if Tarantino told Guy Ritchie an idea for a movie who wrote it down but then lost it during a storm when someone picked it up and tried to connect the dots that got smeared in rain? The result would probably be Joe Carnahan's action-comedy “Smokin' Aces”. Join the St. Johns as they talk about this stacked cast (and who stood out), the overly complicated plot, and just what tone this movie was going for. This Los Angeles-based powerhouse first captivated dance music fans with her breakout single “DJ Love Song,” which reached #28 on the Billboard Dance Chart. The track went on to be featured in John Singleton's film Abduction and later in the action film Skin Trade. Shyra's latest single “Operator”, co-written with Ben Franklin, is an electrifying anthem about reclaiming personal power. Featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming film Not Without Hope directed by Joe Carnahan, the track showcases Shyra's signature high-energy sound and empowering lyrical themes. Her upcoming release, a modern reimagining of The Pointer Sisters' “Fire,” is slated for May and promises to be a bold, high-tempo summer anthem for all! Shyra's influence extends beyond the studio. Behind the scenes, Shyra has collaborated with industry icons such as Grammy-winning songwriter Makeba Riddick (Rihanna, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez) and veteran producer Gary Luxx (Janet Jackson, Usher, Maroon 5). “For me, I don't know how you could not make [a script] personal. I think drama allows you to hide how personal it is. I think that's kind of what I like about writing in the genre space. On the outside looking in, it just looks like a big action movie. It doesn't look like a personal story. But there are personal elements like my mom was a working mom as well. And so that's why you have Kyra in the movie who has to come back to her son because she's been working to protect him. That's a very personal thing… but you would never assume that it's a personal story because it's wrapped up in the action,” says Leon Chills, co-writer of the new film Shadow Force, about writing action from a very personal point of view. On today's episode, we talk with director/co-writer Joe Carnahan and co-writer Leon Chills about the new action flick Shadow Force that puts a family at the center of the action. With a bounty on their heads, Kyra (Kerry Washington) and Isaac (Omar Sy) must go on the run with their young son (Jahleel Kamara) to avoid their former employer, a unit of shadow ops that has been sent to kill them. Carnahan and Chills talk about the challenges of writing action set pieces and the power of giving the story emotional weight. We also discuss trying to push the boundaries of the action genre to invent set pieces that are fresh and inventive, and writing action scenes on the page that are compact and concise. “As an older writer and doing it as long as I have, I'll tell screenwriters, if I see four or five lines of scene description, I'm telling you, do it in two. Do it in one. Let people spend 40 minutes reading your script. No more. You know what I mean? Get through it with that kind of economy. If you've ever read M. Night Shyamalan's Sixth Sense script – it's an absolute masterclass in how to do that. Just so sparse and beautiful and pitch perfect the way that things are written,” says Carnahan. To learn more about action writing and hear more advice, listen to the podcast.

The latest and greatest of Blu-rays this week have Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski disagreeing on the films of Joe Carnahan. There are two Val Kilmer projects; one certainly better than the other (though it did produce a great John Frankenheimer story) as well as some early horror from Bob Clark and a more recent one from Osgood Perkins getting an upgrade. Russell's best films gets the same 4K upgrade plus Peter talks all about Philo Vance, Bettie Page and Peter Bogdanovich reteaming with Cybill Shepherd. 0:00 - Intro 0:56 - Arrow (Narc) 10:09 – Blue Underground (Deathdream) 18:09 – Shout Factory (Gretel & Hansel, The Island of Dr Moreau) 28:32 - Sony (Thunderheart, American Hustle) 35:12 - Kino: (Philo Vance Collection, Republic Horror Collection, Teaserama, Daisy Miller) 58:31 – MPI (Coup de Chance) 1:05:12 – New Blu-ray Announcements

In the thirty-second episode of Season 10: Dealer's Choice, Kyle is joined for a one-on-one conversation with cinematographer Josh Carter to discuss the delirium of a continuous night of antics and chaos in Joe Carnahan's lost studio comedy filled with his signature style and energy in the blue-collar Hollywood commentary film Stretch (2014).
“They weren't eating him. They were killing him.”A Harrowing Tale of Survival in the Alaskan WildernessIn 2011, director Joe Carnahan set out to create a film that would push the boundaries of the survival genre. With a script co-written by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, based on his short story "Ghost Walker," Carnahan assembled a talented cast led by Liam Neeson to bring this harrowing tale to life. Filming took place in the harsh conditions of British Columbia, Canada, where the cast and crew faced frigid temperatures and unforgiving terrain. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the 2013 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Best Actor nominees series with a conversation about The Grey.Survival, Philosophy, and the Meaning of Life in the Face of DeathIn our discussion, we delve into the film's exploration of survival, philosophy, and the meaning of life. The Grey is more than just a tale of man versus nature; it's a deeply introspective journey that forces its characters to confront their own mortality and find purpose in the face of death. We analyze the powerful performances, particularly those of Liam Neeson and Frank Grillo, who bring depth and vulnerability to their roles. The film's stunning cinematography and realistic portrayal of the Alaskan wilderness are also topics of discussion. We examine how Carnahan and his team utilized a combination of practical effects, CGI, and real wolves to create a visceral and immersive experience for the audience. However, we also note some inconsistencies in the characters' clothing choices, which occasionally detract from the overall believability of the film. (At least for Pete's wife.)Other Points of InterestThe symbolism of the wolf pack and its parallel to the group of survivorsThe use of poetry as a recurring motif throughout the filmThe controversial ending and its post-credits sceneThe film's themes of masculinity, redemption, and facing one's fearsThe Grey is a film that stays with you long after the credits roll. It's a testament to the human spirit and the lengths we will go to survive in the face of overwhelming odds. Carnahan's direction, coupled with the powerful performances from the ensemble cast, makes for a gripping and emotionally charged viewing experience. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Welcome back to another flavourful episode of Bad Dads Film Review! Pull up a chair, fellow Dad cinephiles, as we pour over the dynamic world of servers and explore action-packed precincts, all the while indulging in some animated nostalgia.Top 5: Waiters/Waitresses in Film & TV: Serving isn't just a job, it's an art form. We start off by paying homage to the most iconic waiters and waitresses to grace our screens. From the sassy Diane Chambers of "Cheers" to the endearingly clumsy Amelia Bedelia, we'll rank, debate, and toast to the ones who've added the perfect touch of spice to their roles. We might also toss in a few memorable, albeit cringe-worthy, serving faux pas that had us rolling with laughter or hiding behind our popcorn.Movie of the Week: Copshop: Directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo, "Copshop" is a gripping dive into the world of crime and betrayal, with a precinct holding cell as its battleground. We'll unravel the film's intense action sequences, its intriguing character dynamics, and whether it passes the Dad test of providing a perfect blend of thrills, plot depth, and popcorn-munching moments.Kids TV - Mr Bean: The Animated Series: Ah, Mr. Bean. Few characters have the universal, timeless appeal of this bumbling Brit. As we delve into the animated adventures of Rowan Atkinson's iconic character, we'll discuss how Mr. Bean continues to captivate new generations without uttering a single word. We Dads will reminisce about our favourite Bean moments and chat about the life lessons – intended or otherwise – our kids might glean from his antics. So whether you're in for the cinematic service, crime capers, or cartoon chuckles, we've got your table set. I promise the title of today's episode is not clickbait. Our guest, Wayne Godfrey is a British film producer, CEO of Fintech platform, Purely Capital, and expert film financier who've raised nearly $325 million for more than 120 independent feature films.Wayne founded Purely Capital in 2018 to enables film and TV rights owners a way to accelerate payments from years to days, for their content from streaming platforms. This year, he became a mentor at Creative Futures Collective in the UK to contribute to unearthing the next generation of creative industry leaders from disenfranchised backgrounds and empower them to break cycles of systemic inequalities they've experienced. He's credited as executive producer for numerous independent feature films, including, The Man Who Invented Christmas, Robert Rodriguez‘s Sin City, Martin Scorsese‘s Silence, and Joe Carnahan's Boss Level. An undeniably impressive career Wayne has built as a ‘problem solver in film procurement investment – a long way from DJ-ing around London as a young guy with only a deep interest and some skill in sound production. Some of his other key production credits include The Foreigner.THE FOREIGNER, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is a timely action thriller by the director of “Casino Royale.” The film tells the story of humble London businessman Quan (Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love — his teenage daughter — is taken from him in a senseless act of politically motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers. It was really cool getting Wayne's perspective on what he considers as the pillars of a successful film from a marketing POV to thrive in the current diluted and competitive marketplace. He points out that a great story, recognizable talent, and capital can determine a film's success right out of the gate.I know it has not been smooth for a lot of indie filmmakers during these COVID times and I promise, there is something in this conversation for everyone because Wayne doesn't speak only from a marketing standpoint, but he understands extensively, the development, negotiating, and production structures of film financing are always an assuring point of sale for filmmakers.Enjoy my eye-opening conversation with Wayne Godfrey. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement
