Welcome back to Morgan Hasn't Seen with Jeannine Brice & Morgan Robinson!! Happy New Year!! In this special episode, Jen and Amy get a visit from a Hollywood darling we've loved in countless films and shows like The Descendants, Archer, 27 Dresses, Arrested Development and 13 Going on 30 to talk about her newest project based on the beloved children's book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! Actress Judy Greer talks about what it's like to collaborate on such a treasured holiday story that she somehow missed out on as a kid but was lucky enough to discover when she was cast for the role. She sets the scene for what it was like to film the movie last fall in wintry Winnipeg with a cast full of kids on set and also takes a moment to share some highlights from earlier in her career. Also in this episode: Amy and Jen talk about their mixed feelings toward pageants and public performances. As you might guess, one of them loves them, one hates them. In our GenXcellence segment, Jen and Amy recount their first movie-without-parents experiences. And we Rant or Rave about decorating the house at Christmastime. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “I directed so many programs with my sisters and my girl cousins, and my parents were very, very mediocre audience members. If you're going to have four kids, guess what you get to do? You're going to sit on the brown corduroy couch and watch our shitty programs. That's part of the deal. We practiced for six hours. I had choreography. At one point, I gave Lindsay an umbrella that she had to open at just the right lyric in the song and the bitch could not do it and it was so upsetting.” – Jen Hatmaker “I think what's so beautiful about this story is that it's about unity, and compassion, and empathy. And it's about being welcoming.” – Judy Greer Resources Mentioned in This Episode: 48 Hours movie (1982) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083511/ Film Rating Guide - https://www.motionpictures.org/film-ratings/ Top Gun movie (1986) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/ The Shining movie (1980) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/ Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - https://drafthouse.com/austin 37th Street Austin Light Display - https://www.instagram.com/37thstreetlights/ Arrested Development - https://www.netflix.com/title/70140358 13 Going on 30 movie (2004) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337563/ The Descendants movie (2011) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1033575/ I Don't Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star by Judy Greer - https://amzn.to/4hiDC0y The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids by Barbara Robinson - https://amzn.to/3YzrNfh The Best Christmas Pageant Ever movie (2024) - https://bestchristmaspageantever.movie/ Archer - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1486217/ Citizen Ruth movie (1996) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115906/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Dallas Jenkins - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0420817/?ref_=tt_ov_dr_1 Pete Holmes - https://peteholmes.com/ Guest's Links: Judy's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/missjudygreer Judy's Twitter - https://x.com/missjudygreer Judy's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/OfficialJudyGreer/ Movie Links: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bestchristmaspageantevermovie/ The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/BestChristmasPageantEverMovie The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Twitter - https://x.com/BCPEMovie Connect with Jen! We're starting the new year with a little break from our year-by-year examination, and instead we're talking about one of our favorite director's filmographies: Alexander Payne. Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler cover all of his features, from Citizen Ruth (1996) up through the Holdovers (2023). They talk about the themes and character tropes that pop up throughout these films, what works for them and what doesn't about Payne's style, and which characters they relate to most. Other movies discussed in this episode: Election (1999), About Schmidt (2003), Sideways (2004), the Descendants (2011), Nebraska (2013), Downsizing (2017).
On this week's episode of Editors on Editing, Glenn is joined by Kevin Tent. Beginning with Citizen Ruth, Kevin has edited all of Alexander Payne's exceptional films, including Election, About Schmidt, Sideways and Nebraska. For all of which he was nominated for the Eddie. He also edited the Descendants for which he won the Eddie and, was nominated for the Oscar. He's also crafted such terrific movies as Blow, Girl Interrupted and The Peanut Butter Falcon. Now he's brought his editing skills to Payne's, fantastic motion picture, The Holdovers. Thanks again to ACE for partnering with us on this podcast, check out their website for more. Director - Alexander Payne and Editor - Kevin Tent ACE Longtime friends and collaborators, Alexander Payne and Kevin Tent, reunite once more for their eighth feature film, THE HOLDOVERS! THE HOLDOVERS tells the tale of Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), a curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school who remains on campus during Christmas break to babysit a handful of students with nowhere to go. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and also with the school's head cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War. Alexander Payne Director, producer and screenwriter Alexander Payne attended Stanford University, where he majored in Spanish and History. He then went on to study film at UCLA Film School. His university thesis film was screened at the Sundance film festival, which led to him being backed by Miramax to write and direct CITIZEN RUTH (1996). Kevin Tent ACE Editor Kevin Tent has the distinction of having edited all of Payne's feature films (as well as a TV pilot); including films such as CITIZEN RUTH (1996), ELECTION (1999), SIDEWAYS (2004) and THE DESCENDANTS (2011) for which Tent received an Oscar nomination. Kevin is currently serving as president of the American Cinema Editors. Making The Holdovers In our discussion with Alexander Payne and Kevin Tent ACE from THE HOLDOVERS, we talk about: The benefits of being an amiable, affordable, and available editor Demonstrating your abilities to not edit Coming out of the Criterion closet Giving a hall pass to laugh early in the film How it takes an audience to complete a film The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs Go get an Avid Media Composer of your very own Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Okay, so this our longest episode ever at over 3 hours, and EVERYBODY CRIES. Sorry, not sorry. Special bonus appearance by James Estrada at about the 1:30 mark. Special bonus Mexican box office discussion around 2:15. THIS EPISODE FEATURES A LOT OF CRYING. Andy doesn't remember to introduce the podcast. Trawling for sponsors: Magic Spoon, Mucinex, Tacos, or sex toys. CRYING PART 1: Brooke's niece Coco who passed away, her family history and her grandmother from Spain. Grief. The importance of when this movie came out—right in the middle of Trump and terrible things he was saying. The invisibility of Mexican representation in media. This gives us hope. “We Should All Be Feminists”by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. A clip from “The Danger of a Single Story” about her “single story” experience of Mexicans (clip begins at 8:25). This is like a giant hug specifically for Mexicans. Nailed a bunch of specific things like the humor and even the family interactions. The genesis of “so specific it's universal.” THE CHANCLA. All the characters are well-rounded, everyone gets to be right, everyone gets to be wrong. Grandma Imelda is amazing. Check out Chavela Vargas singing La Llorona and Paloma Negra. Andy is scared by La Llorona. Is “de la Cruz” as a name indicative of classism/ colonialism? Hummingbirds – fuck around and find out! Oaxacan spirit guardians and their depiction—GORGEOUS animation. Frida! Generational trauma. Can we NOT do the militarized border in our fantasy land? Disneyland is the same. A WILD JAMES ESTRADA APPEARS!!! We have a 1:1 conversation about Coco. We do more crying talking about James's grandparents. You can find James on Facebook at Nerdy at Home Dad or semaj_adartse on TikTok and Instagram. BOX OFFICE! MEXICAN BOX OFFICE and Mexican box office records! Studio notes. MORE HUMMINGBIRD TALK. Read: The Most Powerful Aztec God had the Hummingbird as his Spirit Animal. Mexico Lore: Hummingbirds. More about hummingbirds in culture. Kitt and Andy almost cry talking about their grandfather. Melissa is going to be on Yours, Mine and Theirs talking about BARFI! Today on the show we have legendary film producer Cary Woods. Cary Woods is a film producer best known for producing worldwide blockbusters such as Scream and Godzilla, the beloved independent films Kids, Cop Land, and Gummo, and modern classics like Rudy and Swingers.Woods is also responsible for producing the breakthrough features of such notable directors as James Mangold, Doug Liman, M. Night Shyamalan, Alexander Payne, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark, as well as the screenwriting debuts of Jon Favreau, Kevin Williamson, and Scott Rosenberg.Woods' filmography features a lineup of A-List actors, including: Robert Downey, Jr., Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Mike Myers, Laura Dern, Heather Graham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Broderick, Courteney Cox, Timothy Hutton, Andy Garcia, Neve Campbell, Sean Astin, Michael Rapaport, Jean Reno, and Steve Buscemi.Born and raised in the Bronx, Woods graduated from the USC Gould School of Law before beginning his career at the William Morris Agency (now WME). As an agent, Woods represented - and in many cases introduced audiences to - the likes of Gus Van Sant, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Connelly, Milla Jovovich, Charlie Sheen, Matt Dillon, Todd Solondz, and most prominently, Gregory Peck.At WMA, Woods also represented many of the industry's most successful stand-up comedians including Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Gilbert Gottfried, Sandra Bernhard, Tommy Davidson, and Jackie Mason. After developing the Indie favorites Heathers and Drugstore Cowboy as an agent, Woods accepted a position at Sony Pictures Entertainment (the parent company of Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures) as a Vice President - Office of the Chairman, reporting directly to Peter Guber. Woods later segued to a production deal at Sony, resulting in the release of a succession of iconic films, including So I Married An Axe Murderer, Rudy, Only You, and Threesome. After starting his own production company - Independent Pictures - the explosive release of the 1995 cultural phenomenon Kids (starring then-newcomers Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny) began a streak of culturally significant, critically-acclaimed independent films produced by Woods under his banner. The next few years saw the releases of Citizen Ruth (the first film from future two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne), Beautiful Girls (which introduced American audiences to Natalie Portman), and Swingers (springboarding Vince Vaughn to comedy mega-stardom).His 1996 film Scream (the most successful film of "Master of Horror" Wes Craven's career) marked a turning point for the entire genre, grossing over $170 million and setting a box office record that would stand for 22 years. The film instantly and single-handedly pivoted horror toward postmodernism, spawning a massive billion-dollar franchise (consisting of successful sequels, a TV series, toys, and Halloween costumes), as well as inspiring countless knock-offs in the years since.Gummo - the directorial debut of Kids' screenwriter Harmony Korine - received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1997 Venice Film Festival. Bernando Bertolucci, the famed director of Last Tango in Paris, praised the film, calling it "The one revolutionary film of the late 20th century."In 1998, the first US-produced entry of the iconic Godzilla film franchise would become Woods' and Independent Pictures' single highest-grossing film, earning nearly $400 million.Woods would go on to serve as co-Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Plum TV, in which he was a founding partner. Broadcasting in the nation's most affluent markets (i.e. Aspen, the Hamptons, Miami Beach), the luxury lifestyle network would go on to earn eight Emmy Awards.Enjoy my conversation with Cary Woods.

Alexander Payne's filmography contains some of the most bitter and hilarious films of the past twenty years, from Laura Dern's caustic abortion comedy Citizen Ruth to the movie that Thron calls the unofficial sequel to Ferris Beuler's Day Off: the merciless Reese Witherspoon showcase Election. But today we take a look at his softer side, with a double feature of Bruce Dern in Nebraska and George Clooney in The Descendants! Each was made to be much more audience friendly than his usual fair - but does MG think they are Oscar-worthy or Oscar-bait?

"We want to promote health and wellbeing to editors because they work so hard." - Kevin Tent As the recently elected President of American Cinema Editors (ACE), Kevin Tent is leading the charge to make working smarter instead of harder in the edit bay one of his top priorities. He's dedicated to making changes like taking regular walk breaks, adding in meditation, and even taking an occasional nap (the horror!!!!) to enhance your creativity and get you through the day with more energy left over for your family and yourself when work is done. Kevin describes himself as a "somewhat professional film editor who has worked in Hollywood for nearly 30 years,” who is best known for his collaboration with director Alexander Payne having edited films like Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt, Sideways, Nebraska, Blow, and Girl Interrupted. He has learned the value of taking care of his body and mind while trying to balance the demanding schedules of Hollywood feature films. In our conversation, Kevin and I talk candidly about the habits he's implemented for better health and creativity while editing (many of which came about from learning the hard way from years of neglect). He also clears up the confusion about the American Cinema Editors organization and details how someone can qualify and become a member. And most importantly he speaks honestly about the value of becoming an ACE member and the benefits that doing so can have on your well-being and career (Hint: It's not to boost your career or find more jobs). If you want to know how one of the top names in the feature editing game stays sharp and continues to work at such a high level, today’s conversation is for you. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Kevin's origin story of how he got started editing. How ten years of editing for Roger Corman made him an "overnight success" after the success of Election. The steps he took to avoid getting pigeonholed. Kevin wants to use ACE to promote healthy lifestyles in post production. KEY TAKEAWAY: Exercise and meditation habits stick when it is something you want to do rather than something you have to do. His morning bike ride often gets him out of creative blocks in scenes. Afternoon walks with Alexander Payne are creatively beneficial for both of them while working on a movie. Kevin uses naps to give him a renewed sense of energy. KEY TAKEAWAY: All the best ideas happen when you're away from the computer. He wants to influence people to understand it is healthy to take walks and breaks during your day. The political instigator that got Kevin to start a meditation practice. The types of meditation he's tried and the benefits he's gained from a regular practice. The myriad of soft skills necessary for an editor to have and how meditation compliments these skills. Why editors are so undervalued and not treated as the integral creatives that they are. Director Alexander Payne has a deep respect for editors on his films. Being invisible artists makes it hard to get the credit we deserve. Kevin describes what ACE is, the history of how it began, and how you can join. [optin-monster slug="u1u6n4yv97rxxz4icynf"] Guest Bio: Kevin Tent (ACE) has been a somewhat professional film editor in Hollywood for nearly 30 years. He is best known for his long time collaboration with director Alexander Payne. Their first collaboration was on Payne’s Sundance hit “Citizen Ruth,” starring Laura Dern. Followed by the critical hit “Election” staring Reese Witherspoon (for which Tent earned his first American Cinema Editor’s nomination). Tent received his second ACE nomination for “About Schmidt” starring Jack Nicholson and his third for “Sideways” starring Thomas Haden Church & Paul Giamati. In 2011 Tent was nominated for both an ACE and an Academy Award® for his editing on “The Descendants”, starring George Clooney. He won the Eddie for best dramatic film of 2011. He was also nominated for an ACE award for his work on “Nebraska” in 2014 and worked with Payne on his most recent film “Downsizing” staring Matt Damon. After attending Los Angeles City College’s film school, Tent got his first break working for legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman cutting classic films like “Emmanuelle 5” and “Not of This Earth”. While continuing to hone his skills in the throws of B-movies, Tent also tapped into the emerging Independent film movement in the US. Cutting the underground hit “Guncrazy” directed by Tamra Davis and the above mentioned “Citizen Ruth” by Payne. Some of Tent’s other credits include “Blow” the late Ted Demme’s drug epic staring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz. James Mangold’s “Girl Interrupted” staring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, (Jolie winning an academy award for her performance). “Disconnect” directed by Henry Alex Rubin, “Welcome To Me” starring Kristin Wigg and “Parched” a foreign language film by Indian director Leena Yadav. More recently Tent’s credits include “Otherhood” from director Cindy Chupack & producer Cathy Schulman and “The Peanut Butter Falcon” staring Shia LaBeouf and Zack Gottsagen. Tent has worked with director Barry Sonnenfeld numerous times, Nancy Meyers on the “The Intern” and Martin Scorsese on his short film “The Audition”. In this episode we compare and contrast Alexander Payne's 1996(!) debut, Citizen Ruth (starring the magnetic Laura Dern) with Gillian Robespierre's 2009 debut, Obvious Child (starring our dream BFF, Jenny Slate). Both are about abortion. Who gets it right? Who gets it wrong? Also, we rant about our pregnancy trope pet peeves and discuss how far into a relationship one waits before they fart in front of their paramour. PS: We have since learned that Gillian Robespierre pronounces her first name with a hard G. Our apologies for the (repeated) error.
Alex's pick for episode 34 is "Citizen Ruth", a black comedy/drama from 1996, the directorial debut by Alexander Payne. Ruth Stoops, an irresponsible, drug-addicted, recently impregnated woman finds herself in the middle of an abortion debate when both parties attempt to sway her to their respective sides. Alexander Payne is one of the brightest lights in American filmmaking, a brilliant social satirist and observer with Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt, Sideways, The Descendants, Nebraska and Downsizing among his credits as director and writer (usually with his longtime collaborator Jim Taylor). He started, as Leonard did, by collecting 8mm prints of silent comedies with Charlie Chaplin, and has never lost his passion for cinema, as you’ll hear in this compelling conversation with Leonard and Jessie.
This week our Rolfe Kent interviews are capped off with a retrospective of his work. While we cannot possibly cover everything he has composed, we hope that shining a light on some of his varied scores will help show just how impressive his works are in film. Some know Mr. Kent by his romantic comedies, others know him by his darker comedies, and others still know him by his adventure scores. Scores like Downsizing, Rock Dog, Dom Hemingway, Bad Words, Labor Day, Young Adult, Charlie St. Cloud, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Reign Over Me, Thank You for Smoking, Wedding Crashers, The Matador, Kate and Leopold, Gun Shy, Election, The Slums of Beverly Hills, Citizen Ruth, and so many others. Without his deft touch, such dark comedies like About Schmidt, Sideways, Bad Words, and Election might be too dark or too light, but not balanced. Luckily, Mr. Kents talent is in diversity of the orchestra and the moods he creates. Brad, Kurt, and Alex take a look at some of the reasons he is so good at this, and try to highlight some of his best work. Sit back and relax, or drive to the calming, fun sounds of Mr. Rolfe Kent. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Kent and everyone that works for him for allowing us to provide these shows and excellent interviews. This is the reason we do this show, to preserve the history of such great artists. Enjoy.
As an actor, how does one follow a performance in a record breaking blockbuster like JURASSIC PARK? If one is Laura Dern, you star in a controversial indie film by a first-time director about the abortion debate, of course. This week it’s her movie, her choice as we discuss Ashley’s pick, dark comedy CITIZEN RUTH (1996) by Alexander Payne. Ashley and Dave marvel at Laura Dern’s ability to render a character with virtually no redeemable qualities as vaguely loveable, and the fact that this film still feels extremely relevant even 20 years later. Plus an appearance by the late, great Burt Reynolds, and SaWT favorites Mary Kay Place and Swoosie Kurtz. Subscribe in iTunes, Android, or Spotify. We're back after a Christmas where we got very big on food, so how do we get small again? On Christmas Day an unlikely blockbuster film- from the director of Citizen Ruth and Nebraska- featuring Matt Damon as a man who shrinks down to 5 inches tall was released and somehow this was the one that caught Jack and Andrew's attention. Korey came along out of tiny curiosity (ho ho, get ready, there are a number of small puns). We saw it. Is it a BIG deal? Our first edition of Actor's Club! For this bonus episode, I enlisted the help of returning guest and friend to the show, Bill Ackerman. Together we focus on our favorite actresses for the first half, then for the second half, we examine the versatile career of Laura Dern. Movies mentioned include SMOOTH TALK, RAMBLING ROSE, CITIZEN RUTH, INLAND EMPIRE, and a whole lot more! We also touch upon her incredible work in the HBO show ENLIGHTENED. Stay tuned for another episode like this come summertime, featuring Patrick talking about a favorite actor of his. I assure you that it's tolerable for pretty much the whole way through. Also Patrick mentioned to me after we recorded that Laura Dern is really great in the movie YEAR OF THE DOG, which for some reason, did not come up in my discussion with Bill. Oops! You should totally watch that movie because it's great and was written by Mike White, who went on to do incredible work with Laura on ENLIGHTENED.
Film Junk's very own Frank Knezic joins us to talk about satirist / dramedy director Alexander Payne. Award-winning actress Tippi Hedren dishes about working with Alfred Hitchcock and Charlie Chaplin in this candid interview. Hedren also offers advice about keeping wild animals as pets. This lovely actress, best known for her work in two Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, The Birds and Marnie, devotes considerable time to animal rights activities and other important causes. Bland annat 24 hour party people, The Trip och Chockdoktrinen. Malin Holgersson fick uppdraget. Programledare: Roger Wilson Producent: Lisa Bergström
