The conversation considers what makes humans unique in the face of a scientific culture (that tends to treat humans as mere animals) and technological advancement (that appears to reproduce intelligence artificially). Among the questions we discuss: Are humans nothing more than advanced animals? Is human intelligence of the same sort as the artificial intelligence we find in computers? Can we base human uniqueness in "intellect" without diminishing those cognitive disabilities? What does it mean to say that humans are a "body-soul complex"? Can we speak about a "soul" without diminishing the body? What is the practical or pastoral significance of discussing human uniqueness? What is awe-inspiring?   Today I speak with Iain S. Thomas, a writer and new media artist. He is an international number-one bestselling creator and author of several books, including What Makes Us Human? An Artificial Intelligence Answers Life's Biggest Questions, which he co-wrote with Jasmine Wang and GPT-3, the world's most advanced AI. He has dozens of local and international awards for his creativity and is one of the world's most popular writers and poets.   Listen in to hear how Iain leveraged AI to answer spiritual questions.   Topics We Discuss:   [5:10] The technology GPT-3 allowed Iain to have a conversation with the Bible, the Talmud, the poetry of Rumi and Sappho, the meditations of Marcus Aurelius, and the Tao Te Ching.    [5:53] Explaining death to his four year old was one of the most difficult things Iain ever had to do. He asked the AI, “How do you explain death to children?” It said: “Tell them that the dead are not dead, not in the way we think of it. Tell them they live on as they are remembered, and that every goodbye is really a hello to a different way of being.”   [10:05] The thing that sits behind stories that connect us, from our most ancient spiritual texts to contemporary songs, is a map. If you put the light up to the map, you can see the whole thing. If we take this poem, this passage, and this piece of prose and hold them up to the light, what's on the other side of that?   [20:26] In the introduction to the book, GPT-3 shares what it believes it feels like to be a human: “I am happiest when I feel chosen by someone. I feel most loved when people are proud of me. I would give anything to feel a family member's protection. Some people are worth crying for. Nothing makes me feel more fragile than death. When someone stops loving me, a part of me will die…”   [21:36] GPT-3 is going through the sum total of human recorded knowledge and saying, “These are some of the key tenets of what I think it means to be human.” These are the feelings that come through from Shakespeare to Chaucer to Ray Bradbury.   [24:15] There were three things the book would come back to repeatedly. Those three things were: 1. Love is the reason why we're here, 2. The moment right now is the most important moment, connect with it as much as possible, 3. We are all connected—to each other, to nature, to the universe—and we suffer when we forget that.   [28:13] Life is a gift, use it well. FOLLOW IAIN S. This episode is a LIVE recording of a conversation I had with Tony Riddle who was eight days into an epic journey. He was running the length of Great Britain, completely barefoot, covering 30 miles a day for 30 days. His aim? To show what human beings are biologically capable of, as well as to raise environmental awareness and funds. Even though the conversation was recorded back in 2019, it has as much relevance today as it did back then. You might remember Tony from episode 71, What Makes Us Human. He's also known as the natural lifestylist and one of his aims is to help people move back towards a more natural lifestyle by inspiring them to make small changes that can make a big difference. Unfortunately, when we meet up to record this episode, in front of a small live audience at the Wild and Wild café in Congleton, acute injury meant that Tony was two days into an enforced break from his run. So, in this conversation, we talk about how he coped with that setback. We also talk about the incredible power of being vulnerable, the idea of progress, not perfection, and Tony's philosophy that everything in life is a process. He shares some simple – and free – tools that can help all of us cope with adversity: human contact (hugs from your loved ones), breathwork, meditation, mobility and cold-water therapy. I ask Tony to take us through a simple breathing exercise, in real time (so you can join in, too). And we chat about the physiology of stress and how and when breathwork can help us. In keeping with the theme of his run, we finish our chat on the topic of sustainability – the equal importance of individual and system change to protect our environment. Tony is a really inspiring man who challenges the modern norms in society that are not in keeping with our evolution and biology. I hope you enjoy this conversation. Thanks to our sponsors:http://www.athleticgreens.com/livemorehttps://www.vivobarefoot.com/livemorehttps://www.calm.com/livemore Order Dr Chatterjee's new book Happy Mind, Happy Life: UK version and US & Canada version Show notes available at https://drchatterjee.com/238 Support the podcast: Members get ad-free episodes and exclusive content including my take on the topics most requested by the FBLM community https://drchatterjee.com/membershipDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. One of the biggest reasons for people to reject Christianity is because of their experience of the Church or other Christians behaving badly. How can we deal with abuse of power, hypocrisy and loss of trust? In an age of scandal, misinformation and conspiracy theories how can we point people to the love, truth and safety of Jesus Himself? Andy and Kristi speak with author and pastor Mark Meynell about these incredibly important questions.Mark Meynell  is Director (Europe and Caribbean) for Langham Preaching (one of the 3 programmes of Langham Partnership). An ordained Anglican minister, he has served in churches in the UK (in Oxford, Sheffield and London) and taught (and for a year was Acting Principal) at a small seminary in Kampala, Uganda. I've been trying to get this man on my podcast FOREVER!!!! Chase Hero! When I say that this man is the most laid back person I've ever met, it's no joke. There's a certain something about Chase that just makes you feel like you can really relate to him. Most successful people now in days talk about everything they've done right, but rarely about all the things they've done wrong. Chase really does not care what people think which I think has allowed him to make millions. You get some honest people here and there, but it seems like at a certain point people are just trying to shine light on how successful and "giving" they are. How many times do you here some big business or entrepreneur talk about, "Oh I give to this charity and I do this and that for these people over here." A LOT. Chase? He donates and gives back to the community but you would never know unless you asked him! He doesn't do it for the hype. He does it because it's the kind of person he is. Growing up in a small town, he used to sell drugs and get in to all kinds of trouble just to see how much he could get away with. He was even incarcerated... a few times. After some WILD ups and downs he is a stunningly successful entrepreneur in the e-commerce industry. Chase keeps it REAL about life and everything he's been through If you're concerned with people thinking you're "cool" or you feel like you've had such a shitty life that you couldn't possibly amount to anything.. You NEED to listen to this podcast! It's going to change the way you think and view yourself. Let me know what you think Much Love, Dr. Sam B. P.S Don't forget to share with your friends and family, everyone could learn a little something from this interview with my good friend Chase Hero! Listening to the news or hyperlinking our way through blog posts, it might seem like the end is nigh. Whether the coming crisis is environmental, economic or some intoxicating mix of the two, the message is always basically the same: humanity is about to screw everything up…forever! As Matt Ridley reveals in his 2010 prize-winning, bestseller The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves this eternal pessimism has more to do with human psychology than it does with the facts of the situation. Throughout history, there have always been professional harbingers of doom. In the old days, doomsdayers predicted man's greed and lust would bring about divine retribution. These days, we're treated to the idea that we might bring about our own destruction because of our relentless pursuit of wealth. In our desire for more food, bigger cars and a more comfortable lifestyle, we will use up all the oil, overheat the planet, pollute the oceans and wipe out all the polar bears. Notice any similarities? Man gratifies his desires…and is punished. While the apocalyptic scenarios on the nightly news might feel plausible, the facts say something very different: the future has never looked more promising. More and more people are being lifted out of poverty. The environment is improving. And all of this is due to the very technologies we're supposed to fear: pesticides, fertilizers, fracking and genetic engineering. Pessimism may feel reasonable, but optimism is what's rational. The Rational Optimist is a tour de force that not only restores your faith in the future, its overview of man's relentless ability to solve problems makes you proud to be human. Perhaps that's why Michael Callen references it all the time.In this episode, Matt, Bryan and Hunter discuss everything from why organic farming is bad for the environment to how the 2008 financial crisis refined Matt's view on the proper role of government in the economy. (Note: Matt Ridley was Chairman of Northern Rock, one of Britain's largest banks at the time.)Before writing The Rational Optimist, Matt Ridley got a doctorate in Zoology from Oxford and wrote five books on biology: The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature, The Origins of Virtue: Human Instincts and the Evolution of Cooperation, Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters, Nature via Nurture: Genes, Experience, & What Makes Us Human and Francis Crick: Discoverer of the Genetic Code. In case you're wondering, these were all bestsellers and also won lots of prizes.
